Yeah, I don't think he'd do much for our recruiting. Think about it like this, the current high school seniors were in 6th grade the last time Mike Leach coached a game at Texas Tech. He also doesn't fit the mold of the modern day recruiting aces who are personable, very active on twitter, and very in tune with modern-day high school kids. I wish we would've listened to the many P5 coaches who believed Dillman was an FBS QB and could play the position for their school (Nebraska, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida State, over half the PAC 12) and at least given him a shot.

I think I've said it before, but the recruiting this summer (or lack thereof) reminded me of a staff that thought they were on their way out. When you see staffs recruit very little until the season ends and they realize they will get another year. Except Mccarney was not on the hot seat at all coming into the year. Potential good that could come from this is a new staff would have an entire class worth of spots, even if they would only have a short time to fill them.

145th in the country in recruiting rankings on 247, and staring an ugly season dead in the face. Going to be hard to get kids excited about coming here. Even if we are patient.

I think the 2014 class was better, according to FBS coaches. Those signees had much better offer lists collectively than 2015 or any other class Mccarney has signed here. Part of the reason last class was more highly rated was because of the relationship Vito forged with Brian Perroni of 247. I feel like he gave our recruits a more fair evaluation than had been given to our commits in the past, particularly after they committed. Good job by Vito, but it makes comparing last year to prior years a little inconsistent. But yeah, I don't see us being any good until we find a QB. I don't have a lot of confidence in the young guys on our roster.

MGB: Dan McCarney presser notes with McNulty, Kirby video

Iowa Fans do "UNT Players Separated at Birth"

When I first saw Dillman's picture I knew it would only be a matter of time. -
Found out in their bowl game last year that their QB,CJ Beathard, hails from the same hometown as myself.

A glaring stat that needs to be addressed

He came back. I like the Gray pickup, but yeah, like you said, he's a juco playing his first season of D1 football. Going to be some growing pains, especially against the pass. -

Absolutely. Defense has been awful on third down. Who have we lost in the secondary? Buyers, Fernandes, and who else? Buyers and Fernandes are two former walkons. They're obviously very good and not average walkons, but if injuries to two former walkons hurt your team that much, what does that say about your recruiting at that position? The guys playing now were recruited to play by this staff. They should be able to get the job done. -
Really? All we've really seen so far are two seniors at tight end, and the two freshman tight ends didn't even make the travel squad.

Yup. Our first two road games this year are seemingly our most winnable( SMU and Southern Miss). We already lost to SMU, and lost one of our five home games. Our road games after this upcoming two-game road swing are Marshall, La Tech, Tennessee, and MTSU, who all look like bowl teams so far. We need that Southern Miss game or else you may see things spiral out of control.

I'm trying to be nice, okay! Yeah, maybe he hasn't but of course Coach Mccarney was hired and extended by RV whereas Dickey was not. It seems pretty obvious that RV is clinging to Coach Mac as his great success of a hire. I've said this before, but RV has hired six coaches in the three revenue sports in the last decade who have coached a season (so not counting Jalie Mitchell who has yet to coach). Those coaches have coached 18 seasons total in their respective sports coming into this academic school year, and only one of those seasons was a winning one (2013 football). That one winning season got our coach a fat raise and a big extension, and I really can't see RV firing him.

I used this comparison in another thread, but do people think it's a coincidence that Jon Daniels hired two of possibly the three best managers in Texas Rangers history? Look at Arkansas State. 3 consecutive Sun Belt Championships with 3 different coaches. You get an AD who can make great hires and you get a coach who can, bear with me, coach and recruit well, and you can win games here. We just won 9 games and a bowl game with really just one good (yet small) recruiting class and some former walkons and a few good players from other classes sprinkled across the field. Most of the all conference players on that team had good offer lists, but no schools we shouldn't be able to out pitch with our location and facilities. It's just a matter of finding that guy, and I think we can only do so by broadening our parameters. Not saying "he has to have coached D1 ball before because Dodge was a trainwreck." Mccarney still has earned time, I just haven't had confidence in him since he failed to capitalize on the bowl game momentum in recruiting of the subsequent summer (2014) and then started getting blown out by schools like UAB. I just think we're capable of a lot, and certainly more than what we're seeing right now, both on the field and in recruiting.

SO HOW IS THAT "TIRED" DEFENSE WORKING FOR YOU NOW?
BillySee58 replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, first 8 minutes of the game Rice ate up the clock. Were we tired already? Couldn't get off the field on third downs. We have problems all over the place. -
I like the idea of Cumbie or Applewhite, but the likely result would be them jumping at a P5 offer one, maybe two winning seasons in. Then again, two winning seasons is more than we've had in the last 10 years.

MGB weekly prediction: UNT will pull the stunner
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
He picked us to win on his blog but with the DMN he picked Rice to win but with us to cover. Guess he didn't want to look like a homer two weeks in a row. He was the only one to pick us to cover. http://www.scribd.com/mobile/doc/281714674/0918-Col-Picks#fullscreen -
Damarcus Smith is warming up on the sidelines
BillySee58 replied to UNT 90 Grad's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, I want to see him too. I just think people are being delusional focusing all their blame on a QB who should've been recruited over well before Smith, as if he is the problem we're sitting 0-2 in year 5 of Mccarney's tenure. It's a big-picture issue and starting at Mcnulty is starting way too low. -

Do you think this program has been put in the situation where we are one Damarcus Smith away from being a good team? -
Even 2012 against Texas Southern?

BillySee58 replied to UNT 90 Grad's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm not saying he's a good QB, or that the stats reflect accurately. Just saying I don't know how much more production a QB who can't leapfrog Greer on the depth chart would've given us. Dan Mccarney builds his teams to win games where we keep the score low. We've won 1 game in the Mccarney era where we gave up more than 30 points, and that was to Troy in his first year back in 2011. In 2013, 24 points would've been enough to win 8 of the 9 games we won that year, plus that UTSA game. It's not good, but that's not where this defense needs to be to win games with the way this program has been built. 562 yards to Rice, and 31 points to an SMU team last week that hadn't scored 30 points in 16 games. We have problems at more positions than 1. -

BillySee58 replied to UNT 90 Grad's topic in Mean Green Football
Was he warming up to play defense? We gave up 562 yards of total offense. Mcnulty threw for 303 yards and 2 TDs against 1 pick. Look at this situation rationally. -
MGN Break Down & Other Stuff: Rice
BillySee58 replied to Mean_Green09's topic in Mean Green Football
Thanks, Greg! Now getting pumped for this one! -
I understand baseball is different, but it just goes back to the idea that smart people recognize other smart people. It's not a coincidence JD picked quite possibly two of the best three managers in Rangers' history with his two hires. He's a great mind and he can pick out the managers who have what it takes and siphon out the ones who don't. If you have an AD who can recognize someone good then get them. We just can't afford to be picky, and have to look outside the conventions that many FBS programs might use. It bit us in the butt before but that's because the hire itself (himself) was not the right one, and then the whole hiring his high school staff thing. I'm sure there are others who could do well, Smiley's just my guy. I just don't want a whole bunch of parameters set, excluding a lot of good candidates just so we can make the "safest" pick based primarily on resume. Then again, Mccarney still hasn't proven do be a failure. He just has to step it up, especially at producing QBs.
