We have offered zero quarterbacks for this class. We have one listed offer in Easton Underwood, but in the article where Vito interviewed him he said that he was hopeful we would offer. So he hasn't been offered. This staff may be looking at a 5th juco QB signee in its 6th class.

Committed to Wyoming

Committed to Louisiana Lafayette. They got two really good tight ends this class, both with P5 offers and North Texas offers (other was Austin Davis from Spring).

He and Chumley are our two young QBs yet we haven't offered any 2016 QBs and we won't give the one tall QB who did have good offers so much as a chance. And then people still end up shocked by how bad our QB play is.

Coach Mac's first year results seem fitting, looking back. In 2011 we were 4-4 in Sun Belt play, with all four wins coming against the teams that finished with losing records in conference play, and the four losses coming against the teams that finished with winning records in conference play. 4-2 at home, 1-5 away. That's kind of how the rest of his tenure has played out. Decent at home, awful on the road. Decent against bad teams, 5-22 against teams that finished .500 or better coming into this year (4 of those wins came in 2013). What has been our most surprising win of the Mccarney era? Maybe ULL in 2012, but that was against a backup QB and at home. Rice in 2013? I would have to think if we could pull it off this week that would be my undisputed number 1, especially with it being a road game.

I agree with almost all of this, with the exception of burning Chumley's redshirt. This is not a season worth burning anyone's red shirts. But it is a season worth seeing what Chumley and Dillman could do at QB in practice. But that's about as likely as Coach Mccarney starting Smith this week just because Mcnulty did not have a good performance in a paycheck game.

3 reasons for optimism facing Southern Miss
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I think we should match up well against them. We aren't awful against the run, and Portland State doesn't throw the ball much. I haven't seen much on them other than highlights, and we should be able to beat an FCS team not just because we match up well against them, but I like our chances there. I think Wilson could carry us offensively. -
If I Read More Excuses I am Going to Scream!

Look at the post. I never said we had limited resources here. I was saying Coach Smiley at TVCC has proven himself to be a good coach and recruiter at a school despite having limited resources. And I went on to say those are the type of coaches who can get kids with a P5 offer or two to come here, and that he's genuinely a good recruiter who can take advantage of our resources. I am just about the last person you will ever see making excuses for Mccarney's poor output here. -
3 reasons for optimism facing Southern Miss

It's funny, a lot of doomsday posts after each game so far. I actually think we have a better shot at winning against Portland State, UTEP, and UTSA than I did a week ago. We aren't good against the run, but we're good enough, particularly against those teams who haven't had a lot of success through the air, to keep those teams running games from just taking over. And Wilson is good enough to take over against those teams. As for the other games, we have to figure out how to win on the road. -
In his defense, that was after our first game cautioning not to overreact off that game alone. But yeah, 7 starters on offense and 6 starters on defense inherited from the previous coach, including the entire defensive line and the QB (two most important position units). Not to mention 6 wins against freshmen QBs that year, most of which were playing against us because things had already gone south that year. That year was a great year, but skepticism would show there was a lot about that year that did not necessarily translate to prolonged success. And those causes for concern have been well justified.

I've always thought that if he's healthy he's the best player on this team. Really want to see what he can do if he has the pieces around him.

'16 DT Ken Mclaurin (Denton Ryan)
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I don't know how hard we're working on him but I know another local staff is, for sure. https://twitter.com/gabrieldbrooks/status/647546808692961281 -
I counted 11 freshmen who have played so far. That doesn't include some redshirt freshmen who may have seen the field in garbage time or special teams but I haven't noticed.

I hope we don't score a single point on Saturday

I just posted in the hometown thread about how I'm from Tennessee. Being from Tennessee, I'm a Titans fan. Last year we were awful, partially as a result of a lot of key injuries, as well as bad draft picks (re: Jake Locker). After a while it was clear we wouldn't have a good year. So what's the difference between 6-10 and 2-14? You go 2-14 and you get a chance at a franchise-changing QB. When I watch Mariota play and see all the buzz he has generated I think "man, it's a good thing we didn't win those meaningless games against Jacksonville and Cleveland." Obviously pro and college is much different. You have the worst record in college and you probably get the worst recruits, not the first pick, so that gives much less incentive to root against your college team, especially if you're a fan who enjoys recruiting. But I understand the sentiment of wanting what's best for your team in the long run, and I don't think it's being a bad fan. That's my hso. -
Everyone reminisce on your hometowns here
BillySee58 replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
It's funny, but my hometown is the same hometown of the other quarterback in this game, CJ Beathard. I'm originally from Franklin, Tennessee. When we moved there just before I was born in 1993, despite its proximity to Nashville, it was just a podunk little southern town. Since it has really become a lot more of a modern suburb, along with a lot of the area around Nashville. Great place. We moved when I was 7 so in reality I grew up more over here in Arlington, but if someone asks me my hometown, Franklin pops up in my head first. -
QB Chris Riddle Update (Maryland Interest)
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
That article is over a year old. Maryland never offered, and all signs point to us not offering him, for the second straight class. -
MGB: Mike Thomas will not play for UNT this year
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
After the initial story I checked the roster and saw he was no longer listed at all, so it seemed like this would be the case. -
I don't think there's a single FBS HC who would go from being a bowl team at that FBS school to leaving and accepting the job here coming off of firing our previous coach. Even from the Belt. It's a huge risk, considering how many losing seasons we've had. And any FBS school that is going to bowl games would gladly pony up the cash that we could pay. Maybe if we were winning a lot and we were in the market for a new coach because the guy leaving did so to take a P5 job.

Eligibilty is maybe my main complaint with not giving him a shot. He has 5 years of eligibility. Not like he's a kid transferring in with a couple years and needing to retrain him as a QB. I have a hard time believing that with so much time to develop him he couldn't at least be Mcnulty/Greer level by his redshirt junior year. Probably earlier.
-
That's why I don't like this strategy. I love the idea of saving maybe 2-4 spots for guys like McNair, Dillman, Chumley. Banking on filling an entire class with them is silly, IMO. To me it's our staff looking for a shortcut around winning recruiting battles the conventional way. College football is too competitive to take shortcuts. I just really have a hard time seeing a way this works out in the end.

Yes. Rivals changed it after the confirmed position switch. He committed to Nebraska in April 2014. To that point he had been seen as nothing but a national QB prospect. After that he completely shut off his recruitment until after Nebraska and their new staff parted ways with him. We were the only school to offer after that. You could just as easily do that with the college coaches who offered him like Dabo Swinney, Butch Jones, Jimbo Fisher, Gus Mahlzahn, etc.
