  1. Does he need to be that? I don't think so. But I think that's the most likely profile, although we shouldn't restrict our criteria. But yeah, hiring coaches who were just fired from bigger programs has to be the right guy and the circumstances have to be translatable. Getting hired here doesn't necessarily mean they're more likely to succeed just because it's a step down in competition.
  2. Here's the long story. So after the 2013 season I felt skeptical about Mccarney and how we won, but I convinced myself we would be okay. I also convinced myself that he was a good talent developer and that the poor job at winning recruiting battles would be overcome. Then we got off to a bad start, and when we got annihilated by UAB and I realized, hey, Mccarney isn't this awesome talent developer, he's a bad recruiter, and our in-game coaching isn't good. This was not a good hire. So then I thought, maybe Dodge wasn't a fluke. When was the last good hire by RV? I thought off the top of my head the last major sports hires I could remember (keep in mind I've only been closely following the school for 4 years), compiled their records, and realized they were combined 99 games under .500 at the time. I didn't realize, but Johnny Jones was the last hire by RV before those 6 I thought of. Johnny, of course, was here until 2012 so the numbers weren't as bad with him having all the 20-win seasons. Some say excluding Johnny isn't playing fair. Skepticism says it was an outlier. I say the 6 hires he's made in the last 10 years are more indicative of if he were to make another hire in those sports than that hire he made over 14 years ago. But yeah, that's why those hires don't just all match up together chronologically.
  3. It was in this thread http://www.gomeangreen.com/forums/topic/100189-how-i-feel/?page=2
  4. Not towards the school, but will he help give Vito good info?
  5. 6'1 175 lb receiver from Austin Westlake. He committed to us on September 26th, per rivals. Doesn't list any other offers. Rivals is the only site confirming the commitment and the offer. Per maxpreps he had 34 catches for 478 yards and 5 scores last year, and has 19 catches for 406 yards and 5 scores this year. QB is committed to Texas as a junior. highlights: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1755384/chase-cokley https://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Chase-Cokley-185497 http://www.scout.com/player/196311-chase-cokley His Twitter came up when I was searching his profiles. Took a quick look and he hasn't said anything on there about a commitment.
  6. Said the same at the radio show. SMU has yet to beat anyone else this year, after getting worked 49-23 by ECU at home, a week after losing to FCS James Madison at home. And Rice's "best team since I took the job here" is just 2-3 and got smoked 49-10 by WKU in Houston.
  7. Besides winning a starting job as a redshirt freshman, leading our LBs and being 2nd on the team in TFLs 1/3 of the way into the season, being our best outside linebacker, or making plays when he gets out there, including against Iowa?
  8. Nah, I didn't take it that way. Just wanted to back it up with the numbers that I had readily available. If football, men's, and women's basketball all fail to post a winning season (pretty likely) you're looking at one winning season out of 21. Not only is that horrendous, but we absolutely have much more potential than that, in every sport.
  9. ya know, I try to be nice but it basically never tells the whole story at this point. As bad as things are. But yeah, comparing our QB situation to Alabama's (even when nationally it isn't perceived as good, relatively speaking) is just laughable. I'd like to think a good recruiting coach could sell him on playing his last season 40 miles away from his home vs. 270 miles from his home, with likely 9 games his senior year in the state of Texas, and with a much nicer stadium to play in. Would not be easy to beat them out, hypothetically, but it also should be very realistically achievable.
  10. Posted this in another thread, but just for emphasis: .342 winning percentage
  11. I understand that his opinion on Byrd vs Scott should be somewhat limited by not seeing him live, but that's also the same logic Cooley used to use to validate his opinion that we should not have offered Brandon Garner.
  12. As a guy who loves his recruiting, there obviously is a lot more to it, but yeah. I would throw in East Texas more specifically, because that's an area we really need to focus on for a lot of reasons. Mainly that the exposure is much less out there, which should work to this program's advantage, geographically. Side note: our recruiting class ranking is down to 146th in the country. There are 128 FBS programs, which we are apparently dead last in right now. http://247sports.com/Season/2016-Football/Commits?skey=109
  13. Absolutely accurate. To add to this, if you listened to his presser from earlier in the day, it's eery how similar this was. Like, I'm not even joking, he even has his Freudian slips occur in the same stages of his shticks. I literally started thinking "wait, did I listen to this last night? Oh yeah, that was his presser." Also: 1. When he talked about how people were throwing dirt on him he thanked the people in attendance as if no other fans deserve praise, even if they are justified and just want the best for the team. Shame on you for not being there or not having faith in Mccarney. Let me remind you people here about my national championship or Iowa background in case you forgot. 2. The record breaking shoot out we had with Navy in 2007 was brought up. Mccarney said we won't have to worry about seeing a score like that since we have Chris Cosh. The same Chris Cosh whose defense allowed 62 points (the exact amount we scored against Navy that day) nine days prior to yesterday's show. 3. The change is weak thing was ridiculous. Getting your teeth kicked every week isn't showing weakness? That's what our friends and co-workers want to hear. "Yeah we don't play the same caliber of opponents that you guys do at 'X BIG12 school' and our still getting worked every week but hey, at least our coach isn't showing weakness. You idiots at TCU think winning because of changing offensive philosophy is cool? So what? SIGN OF WEAKNESS!" 4. Back to the similarities from his presser earlier in the day, Mccarney kept referencing that they had many "D1 transfers" on their team, and that they can drop down a level and be not have to sit out. A coach who has been around as long as he has makes it sound as if he doesn't know that Portland State is a D1 school themselves. It irks me when fans don't know the difference, really frustrates me when high school coaches don't understand the difference, but a college coach? He knows, but I guess even the little things are making me mad at this point.
  14. Considering they run ads on the videos now, I highly doubt that.
  15. I don't know. I've never tried personally. UNT90 has said to me, and on the board, that KP is your best bet to actually get a response.
  16. Yeah, that's your best bet.
  17. Matt Davis at SMU is a junior. We are Morris' best bet to play FBS ball close to his hometown. TCU likely won't offer, with Kenny Hill redshirting and likely taking over. I could see La Tech offering, to replace their current grad transfer Jeff Driskel.
  18. La Tech appears to be on their way towards a second consecutive division title with a second straight grad transfer QB. This kid almost won the job at Alabama. I highly doubt anyone on our roster could almost win the job at Alabama.
  19. Originally I wanted to just bump Morris' original thread, but that thread is extremely difficult to open, both on mobile and on desktop, so I just decided to create a new thread. This is a kid worth keeping an eye on, IMO. Out of high school he was the starting QB at Allen his junior and senior year, and we did offer back in the summer of 2011 but he committed to Wake Forest, then Alabama where he still is. Those were his only three offers. He is a redshirt junior, and reportedly almost won Alabama's starting job out of camp, but it was given to Senior Jacob Coker with RS Sophomore Cooper Bateman receiving the other reps. I think there's a very realistic chance this kid becomes a grad transfer, so long as that rule does not get changed, as it has been reported that it may. In that scenario I'd imagine he would want to come close to home, and we may be the best option that would actually offer, although La Tech could make a push as well if they continue their trend that has worked. Mccarney has stated in his radio show that he doesn't want grad transfers because they'll only be here a year, but if we get a new coach Morris could be a realistic option, allowing the new coach time to develop a QB. I could see Morris putting up a DT-like senior year (slightly above 1:1 td/int ratio). Just someone to potentially have on our radars. http://m.rolltide.com/m/sports/m-footbl/mtt/alec_morris_811296.html http://mweb.cbssports.com/ncaaf/eye-on-college-football/25279590/report-alec-morris-now-leading-alabama-quarterback-competition http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Alec-Morris-123490 http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EKJYFkTumLo
  20. This thread is a good reminder, going forward if you have a kid in mind who the coaching staff is not pursuing but you think they should be, alert them. Creating a thread on these types of players doesn't accomplish anything.
  21. 31-24 us. I think we ride Jeffery Wilson, who is absolutely capable of taking this game over and going for 200+. Defensively they don't throw the ball particularly well, which is good for us considering we are awful against the pass and not-awful enough against the run, allowing us to keep the score down. Especially since we can focus on the run and keep the clock moving. It would be a win that would not translate well at all to most of the upcoming games or future seasons, but a win. I have not seen Portland State's QB play so maybe he is capable of lighting us up. Would probably be the third QB in five games to have a career day if it happens. This guess is not that informed because of this reason.
  22. Outscored by 69 total that year, by 46 through the first four games. We've been outscored by 113 through 4 games this year.
