  1. With Gill at least he's a good recruiter and Kansas is not an easy job. I just think with these guys you're limiting your potential. Neither Hoke nor Gill are great QB recruiters and developers, so I would be surprised to see them get more than 7 wins while having a DT-type QB. Wouldn't be the worst thing, and they'd sustain more success than Mccarney, but with how quick the CFB world is changing and leaving us behind, we really need a home-run hire here IMO.
  2. He runs a spread offense. Kind of has some Mahlzahn type wrinkles every once in a while. I think his QB would follow him, unless he gets a big-time offer, which is a possibility. Right now he doesn't, but Auburn is apparently going to see him play live. It's not extremely likely Auburn offers, but it's very possible.
  3. Brady Hoke? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cPxPSzz0LBY You really want a retread, don't you? I'd rather have Turner Gill if we're going the retread route, but I don't see any of those guys taking this program where we are capable of going. The reasons they were fired don't translate well here, IMO.
  4. Briles isn't going to take the OC job here when he's currently the OC for his dad at a team in the top 5.
  5. Yeah, I would like that too, and I think he would take an OC job. But I would imagine the hire would want to bring in his own OC, and Smiley wouldn't just take a position coach/recruiting coordinator job because that's what he was at Tulane before TVCC.
  6. I like Cumbie, but someone made a good point. Apparently TCU people don't think too fondly of RV, and he didn't help his reputation after the handling of the Mccarney firing. I don't know that the TCU guys wouldn't take the job here, but that is a factor to consider and it probably doesn't help. Im still pushing for my boy Smiley. I can't guarantee he'd make the big jump successfully (none of these guys are even close to sure things), but I know recruiting would be incredibly fun to follow and he'd get some really good players in here. He'd also make sure our special teams are good, and we'd put up points.
  7. I'm having trouble following your point. Here's how I've been following our back and forth: Me - We hired guys after Fry who had the resumes many on here want now, and they didn't finish with winning records here. They can be successful here, but they can also fail. There is no sure fire resume that will translate here like many seem to think. Most important is fit. You - We've never seen those type of hires when they had Apogee stadium to work with. Me - Stadium was not a huge issue in the early 80s when those guys were taking over the program. Fouts wasn't the catastrophe of a stadium yet and Fry was winning there at the time, so Fouts was not the reason those guys didn't have success here. You - Fry not getting us into bowls was a bigger problem than Fouts. It was terrible to recruit to Fouts in the 90s, and we needed generators to keep the lights running towards the end. I really don't know how your last point ties back to coaches with good resumes not winning here in the early 80s. But honestly, can we just leave it at these coaches with good resumes still have to be the right fit?
  8. USC is still a better job. I personally believe it's the best job in the country. It's easier for USC to get everyone they want out of California than it is for Texas to get everyone they want from this state. You're a lot more likely to win a national championship at USC than A&M, especially because you don't have to navigate that conference schedule. Yup. Although that is possible. Depends if USC thinks Sumlin is worth paying what it takes if Texas offers something ridiculous.
  9. If he exits then I think you'll probably see Texas pull he trigger on Strong, if they don't regardless, and try and get Kelly. That would be an interesting tug of war.
  10. Sumlin mentioned as a potential candidate at USC. The A&M coaching job opening up right now would create a huge chain of hires throughout the state.
  11. Fouts wasn't a good stadium, but we were rolling when Fry left and those guys I mentioned with real 1A/FBS resumes were not successful, and it's not because they had no chance playing in Fouts. It was just over 20 years old at the time and we were winning there substantially in that era. Like I said, it doesn't matter what people think and hiring someone who doesn't have the resume we all want is not necessarily an epic reach. Briles was not a national head turner when Houston hired him in 2003. He was a really good fit and obviously a future star. Getting that type of guy is much more important than getting someone from a school who is mentioned on ESPN the most who might not be a good fit. Getting Smiley is not a must for me, but I just think people should get it out of their heads that best resume does not necessarily equal best hire. Whether we're at Fouts or Apogee.
  12. What email address did you use?
  13. It's a fan board. Every fan board in the country is going to be excited about new hires because they are inherently exciting. Unless that coach comes with baggage that most fans don't want, they're going to get behind and excited about the hire. Even if it's not the guy they all individually wanted, like you said, generally speaking.
  14. If you make the move soon, a month to get the new AD and a month to get a new head coach in place would occur right during the bowl break. This is possible, but it appears time is on RV's side.
  15. Won't directly affect our coaching search, but could do so indirectly. When Strong was hired by Texas, I forgot the number, but it affected many schools and coaches in a chain of hirings to replace coaches hired away.
  16. Preston was Lamarcus Hicks. KP was Young. Harrison was KP but Mac and Quartaro visited him. I could be wrong, but I think Quartaro was technically his lead recruiter with KP heavily involved, particularly on his OV.
  17. Record low game grade for a team by Phil Steele.
  18. If you want Canales to be the head coach then make sure it's because you think he's a better fit for the job then people out of house. If you're scope is limited outside of UNT football then you really shouldn't be campaigning for him. Speaking in general and not directed at any Canales supporters specifically. He has not done a good job recruiting, particularly with QB recruiting (possibly limited by Mccarney, but still a poor job).
  19. Off the top of my head, Jeff Wilson and Nate Brooks. Can't remember for sure, but I thought he was the lead recruiter for Goree and Rutherford.
  20. I have no clue what you're trying to say (or ask), or if you're "benfired" was supposed to be a joke or a typo. But no, I'm not saying whatever it is you think I am. I'm just saying this isn't going to be the first year we see a Benford roster. Last year was an all-Benford roster except one player, who was your best player so his absence from this year's roster is not a plus.
  21. Each day it doesn't happen I get more nervous. He said he was going to start the searching process immediately.
  22. There's also a vibe that Smatresk is well aware at this point. He knows RV's track record and such. If he lets donors, who obviously don't care that RV hasn't produced, pull a power move then he's the problem too. But yes, by all means keep letting him know.
  23. Las year every scholarship player but Jordan Williams was a Benford recruit.
