Lincoln Riley interviews for North Texas job
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
He would make recruiting fun. Not sure how good he'd be at building a staff or running a program, but that's not his fault. I also wonder how involved a guy like this would be in play calling, with it being his first job.- 67 replies

UNT Coaching Candidate Chris Thomsen
BillySee58 replied to StealthEagle84's topic in Mean Green Football
I thought it was interesting that Thomsen was listed as one of Brad Smiley's professional references. That could help make for a really good staff. It's also interesting that we could have two guys interviewing from the same staff (Thomsen and Norvell). -
Teegarden and Chumley were both officially announced as QB signings for their respective signing classes. That is what I'm going off of.
-
Harry never said he couldn't play. The point is that we signed 10 QBs while Canales was here (Teagarden, Jones, Mcnulty, Osborn, Williams, Berglund, Means, Greer, Chumley, Smith), and those guys have combined for 5 wins. Those three Harry mentioned have combined for 1 win, and it was Greer against SMU in a game where he only threw 12 passes. He didn't say they sucked, or anything like that. But when the 10 QBs you sign have 5 wins combined, and you're in year 6 as OC/QB coach, you have not done your job adequately. A huge part of that is on Mac too, but that's why he's gone, and Canales is going to follow him shortly. It was Chico's offense, he had to find his guy, and he never did.

RV and Canales have both made it very clear that this will not be the direction UNT goes.

UNT Football Scholarship Spreadsheet
BillySee58 replied to NorthTexan95's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Mustafa Haboul is no longer on the roster. He got hurt, but I'm surprised that injury was never announced. Tough break for a really hard worker. Good news is he graduates this semester. -
I think GOMG2013 is right. His problem is not a talent one. Haboul tore a ligament in his knee. I was just looking at the roster earlier and he's no longer on it. Good thing is he gets his degree next month.

I'm interested to see how we do against good QB play. Litton has been inconsistent (as a true freshman QB should be), and was against us. So they beat us handily, but couldn't make it a real blowout. Last week was a walkon QB, and their key offensive player went down early on. We'll see against La Tech and MTSU if this defense really is playing better.

What's scaring me about this process
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't know why Smatresk would keep him yet won't give him a public vote of confidence. -
What's scaring me about this process
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
That too. That's what is so frustrating. It's easy for me to say, but I don't think it should be that tough. RV gets to interview these guys and has been here almost 15 years. He should know by now what it takes, has a candidate pool to evaluate, and gets to interact first hand with the top candidates. This also is honestly not as nearly as hard a job as he and Coach Mac made it sound. -
Middleton committed over the summer.

MGB: Monday night coach search update
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
You could definitely argue we have a higher ceiling than them, but right now they're already at the point where we would hope to be in 3 or 4 years. By that point he'd be close to 60, and his attraction to P5 schools would be much less than it is now for that reason. -
I keep getting the indication that RV feels he can just throw a bunch of money down and get some guy with a résumé, and that'll solve our problems. He's made it very clear recently that he doesn't feel he's at fault for his past hires because they were, as he believes, the right moves at the time. He also feels his shortcoming were due in large part to not being able to offer enough money (even though we ranked favorably against our conference mates). Even if we can hit that million dollar mark like some feel we may at least approach, I think all that's actually going to do is open up the pool of washed up and overrated coaches who can demand high salaries, yet don't have larger programs interested in them. I'm thinking guys along the lines of Derek Dooley and Greg Schiano. Guys who have either been in the NFL, had some success somewhere else in the past, or a combination. Not necessarily focusing on guys who translate well to THIS job in particular. That should be the main goal. This process needs to be about finding who can be the best coach at North Texas in 2016 and beyond, and not who was the best at some other school back in 2008. We shouldn't be cheap, but being smart about this is much more important than opening our wallet an extra $250K.

I've been feeling the same way. Don't see it happening. -
Meacham is our best option HERE IS WHY...........
BillySee58 replied to mgfan's topic in Mean Green Football
He's our best option because he's from Arlington and earns $350,000? -
Yeah, Tyrone Middleton and Chase Cokley. Vito never followed up with Cokley. Maybe because of his past with Cokley's coach (Dodge). 247 also lists Curtis Hollis as a football commit, but he's actually a basketball commit who is playing his first year of HS football. Hollis turned some heads this summer, but he hasn't produced much (understandably so). If he were to try and play both sports, his scholarship would have to count towards football (by NCAA rule), so the new coach would have to be really on-board with Hollis to agree to that. I expect the new coach to sign a full 25. We signed 25 last year, so we can't backcourt any early enrollees, but between the current group of about 15 scholarship seniors, about 5 open spots (about 80 scholarship players on team out of a possible 85), and players who will quit and transfer between now and when the freshmen arrive, there is no reason to not sign a full 25.

During most home games, a solid 90+% of the kids visiting are on unnoficial visits. With an interim staff, probably zero of those kids were on official visits. In all honesty, there really is very little to pay attention to until we get a new staff in, with regards to recruiting.

We don't have a staff to offer.

Frank Beamer retiring at Virginia Tech

I know. That's what I said. Look at my post. The "he" I referred to in the first sentence was Bob Stoops. -

BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
He actually won a National Championship and made two other championship games during the BCS era. Richt made zero, as UGA was the only powerhouse program from a top 7 recruiting state (Texas, USC, Florida, Miami, FSU, Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, Alabama) to not win one championship and have at least two appearances in the title game. And I don't think he will make an appearance in the CFB Playoff. -

RV made it very clear on the podcast that it is understood by both that Canales is not viewing this as an audition and RV will be looking elsewhere.

Word around UGA is that Richt is touting his 5-star QB recruit Eason as the starter for 2016 and beyond. Giving him some job security to let him be the guy at QB, since they've recruited pretty well elsewhere. I don't think it'll actually take them where they want, but it should save his job for now. -
Another big-time job opening up. We aren't going to compete directly for them for our HC opening, but their job will create a big trickle down effect.
