Is this the fifth 10-loss season in school history?
BillySee58 posted a topic in Mean Green Football
According to Sports Reference this is our 5th 10-loss season in school history, but they only go back the last 51 seasons. Three were under Dodge and now this one, and the one listed before that was in 1972. Did we have any prior to that? If not, that means four out of the five have come from seasons started by RV's two hires. 80% of our 10-loss seasons. While just 9 out of the 100 seasons in school history have started with RV hires at the helm (9%). Call this an anti-RV thread if you want, I just was curious seeing this while looking at our all-time record. http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/north-texas/ -
MGB breaking: Briles among those who have sent resume
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Reading the posts in this thread you would think Briles said he would accept the job if we offered. He just sent in a resume. -
Why? So we could be 4-8, and maybe still have Mccarney around to screw up another recruiting class, and still not find a QB of the future? The reason I said I wouldn't miss DT is because he couldn't take us where we are capable of going (a conference championship game). It wasn't all his fault, but he didn't. The fact that we've had the worst QB recruiting in the FBS the last 5 years doesn't make me miss him, it just makes me want us to get our together and get a coach who can recruit well and can bring in good, developable QBs who can be all CUSA. We have had trouble replacing DT's production, but that doesn't mean it was an unreasonable request from the start, nor that he would be saving this program from the recruiting mess across the board. And that's what we need.

MGB: Report -- Hollis will not sign with UNT today
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
To be honest, this kid may have more potential in football. Statistically speaking, he's much, much more likely to get drafted as a 6'5" receiver than as a 6'5" combo forward. Here are some quotes from the Cowboys camp he participated in this summer. http://www.dfw.com/2015/06/11/1004100/mansfield-summitt-basketball-star.html -
I'm hoping this new shot clock leads to games with more scoring in general. Also, did anyone watch or listen to the women's game? I had no idea they switched to playing quarters instead of halves. Maybe the men will make that change in the near future.

Wide receiver -
As we head into final two weeks of the season, and await a new head coach to finally bring back some recruiting to this program, here's a quick PSA. The main purpose of this forum is to track the recruiting of our football program, and track the future of the team. Sometimes in this forum we'll take a look at what's going on around us at other schools, mainly our close competitors. We also sometimes have posts about players we are not recruiting, yet some of us think we should. Regarding the creating of threads for players we are not recruiting: to anyone who knows of a player who you believe is interested being recruited and/or you believe the staff should consider recruiting, please email/make an attempt to contact the staff about the player. In all honesty, simply creating a thread on here for the player will do very little (if anything) to contribute towards him getting recruited. If you want to discuss a player and ask for some other opinions regarding him, go ahead. Not singling out anyone. Just making it clear that this forum is not meant to serve as an exposure medium to the coaches who make the actual decisions on who we recruit. Thanks, guys! Hope to see a lot of posting in December and January as the new recruiting starts to pick up.

MGB: Report -- Hollis will not sign with UNT today
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
If he starts out counting towards basketball then he misses his entire freshman year of football. Cannot even practice with the team if he's on scholarship for basketball, and he's raw, so he really needs that developmental time and can't afford to take another year off after playing his first year of high school ball. No matter what your take on the situation is, it makes all the sense in the world to hold off on signing if he really is contemplating playing both. -

Right. If he's on scholarship and wants to play football, his scholarship has to count towards football. Maybe our new coach likes him and agrees to it, and Benford agrees to it (it would save Benford a scholarship but he would miss the beginning of basketball season). 1. We don't have a coach, so he has no way of knowing if our coach would offer him. It's one thing to let him on the team as a walkon, but it's another to know he automatically takes up a scholarship by being on the team. By going through the rest of the recruiting process he can see who will allow him to play both. 2. I'm not sure about this, but if he signs wouldn't that guarantee him for a scholarship at least for next season (2016-2017 school year)? That would prohibit him from participating with the football team his entire freshman year. -

Did you read what I posted above? Basically if he wants to be a dual sport athlete, signing now for basketball would eliminate that possibility. His scholarship has to count towards football in order for him to be eligible to play both sports. If he's on scholarship for basketball (which would happen if he signs now), then he's not allowed to participate in football. As Tasty said, the NCAA has a scholarship hierarchy. It's to ensure that a school doesn't sign a bunch of kids who can run track, play baseball, basketball etc yet are really being signed to play football, for example. -
I actually made a thread on him, because our old staff (Mccarney) did offer him. He's got a good offer list. http://www.gomeangreen.com/forums/topic/104247-17-rb-eno-benjamin-wylie-east/

MGB: Five thoughts following UNT's loss to Tennessee
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
The losses Vito keeps mentioning we'll miss, we have missed. That's why we've gotten worse every year since 2013. Awful recruiting means we don't exactly reload when starters who contributed graduate -
Check out this piece I did for MGN. Enjoy. http://meangreennation.com/2015-november-recruiting-update/

Guess they're going with Deandre as the 6th man again.

Welcome. I'm originally from Tennessee, and grew up a Vols fan. I lived in Franklin from when I was born in 93 until I was 7, so I was there for the national championship but didn't start really paying attention until the Ice Man years. I was 8 when the Vols won at the swamp in 01, and I was hooked from there. Cool to see what Butch is doing. Hoping we get a guy like that at UNT so recruiting can be fun and fruitful. I'll be rooting for th school I attend(to probably no avail), which will be weird to root against Tennessee for the first time ever. Hoping for a strong finish for both teams.

MGB: Report -- Hollis will not sign with UNT today
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Thank you. Makes me wonder if this kid is legitimately considering signing for football, though. I believe Kansas offered him as a receiver, and he turned some heads this summer at some Dallas Cowboys high school camp. It looks like he didn't have a big year, but it was his first year playing football since junior high iirc. Also, if he wanted to play both sports I believe he would have to sign for football, since if a scholarship athlete plays two sports, with one being football, it's an NCAA rule to count the scholarship towards football. -

If your complaint and reasoning for him not deserving the job is that OL coaches should not be made head coaches, then you clearly have not done adequate research on the man to be saying he shouldn't be the head coach. You have to research the individual, not just job title. That, to me, has been RV's major flaw. So it's more like RV to say what you are saying than to hire him. This one would not be as easy for him to say "well people thought it was the best move at the time" if he didn't work out. Then again, RV would still say that regardless.

Can someone post pictures of Brian Randolph and The Weeknd for me? I don't have access to my computer right now.

In hindsight Fran wasn't the answer either
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think I'd consider Dykes a retread because he's taken a Cal program that was in a bad place, made them pretty competitive, but they seemingly are not happy enough with where they are right now. Probably given how much hype Goff has received. When I think retread I think a coach who was fired or not retained somewhere, and then giving them another chance. -

Have to be very, very cautious with the retreads. I think that's the route least likely to work here. Maybe if it's the right guy, but you really are running a risk with how much the landscape of college football and recruiting has changed since one of these guys last fielded a winning team. -
I would like to see Smith at running back as well. Maybe some receiver, but he's built probably more like a running back, and is pretty good at running in between the tackles. There could potentially be some pretty good grad-transfer QBs. Guys like Alec Morris at Alabama, Trevor Knight at OU, heck even Birdsong at Marshall and Matthews at USM in our own conference (doubt they'd get releases to us). I was trying to be nice. If the new coach goes with a senior QB on this roster, it would be Smith and I'd be surprised if Greer stuck around for that. The new coach also might want a young QB to develop while he gets this team's talent level back where it should be. Either way, there really isn't a scenario where Greer is the guy.

Conley was here before Mac.

I think this will be Greer's last season here, with Damarcus seemingly locking up the spot for next year.
