  1. Staring an 2-7 start dead in the eye. I would be shocked if we won one of the next four. I would think this is it for RV. How much the prez cares about sports is up for debate, and so is how much faith and trust he has in RV, but I can't imagine him letting RV make another hire after having to pay over $3.5 mill in buyouts to the three highest paid coaches firings within 365 days
  2. I think they'd get the buyout money for Benford and still have confidence in RV to make the hire.
  3. We lost to another team with a lot of turnover from last year and another team playing a lot of young players.
  4. Idaho was missing too. They missed, I believe 7 of 8 down the stretch to give us a chance.
  5. He actually has done a lot better the last two classes, including winning recruiting battles. And the old argument that Benford can't get his signees/freshman to actually suit up is outdated, since that really only happened for him with the 2013 class and he's had two straight classes end up on campus just fine since then.
  6. Lol, heard that too If Benford is fired before the calendar turns, that would be all 3 revenue coaches fired in 2015. Just a few months after RV said this in May “What we need now is for folks to come out and be a part of what we do,” Villarreal said. “It’s fair to say that we provided the facilities and atmosphere that people wanted. We have the kind of coaches who can do what we need to do. Dan proved that a year ago. We need people to come out, fill the stands and help move the program forward.” http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/sports-headlines/20150519-coaches-talk-attendance.ece
  7. Yeah, sure a good coach could replace him. In year 1? Probably not. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying a good coach could win here with these players or with his own players. A new coach would only get two years of Combs, and we'd hope by year 3 he's able to build a roster to offset the loss of an all-conference guy like Combs and still have a good team.
  8. Yet another case where RV's extremely unnecessary predetermined parameters took out really good coaches and led us to a guy who had a somewhat flashy resume but doesn't get the actual results.
  9. This is not true at all. Sure they're good players, but there are no players on this roster that an actual good coach and recruiter could not replace.
  10. Which would really be unfortunate. Not only would that have been a better hire back then, RV has had the chance to atone and let Benford go, but he has continually chosen to ride him out. Possibly past the point of having a shot at Cross.
  11. "Idaho is a really good team. Well coached. They're a tournament team. Makes you realize why we're 0-10 against them all time." - Someone from the administration, probably
  12. Reese had bad assist/turnover ratio at A&M, and was played at the two mostly there. I don't see him putting up great assist numbers.
  13. If Rivals agrees that the 2015 class is better then why did they rate our 2014 class with 4 three-stars while the 2015 class only had 2? All the other signees were rated two-stars, yet the 2015 class was rated higher for having more signees I guess. Less signees and more three-stars for the 2014 class. Through 247 our 2015 class got a nice bump from Vito forging a relationship with Brian Perroni of 247 in the last few months of the recruiting cycle. Perroni actually then reevaluated and more fairly rated our 2015 commits, whereas in 2014 many of our signees were given a spare rating back in the summer before their senior year and were never given a serious re-evaluation because they committed to North Texas and not a program that actually has a subsite and subscribers to 247. That's why I say focus on the offer lists. The rating game is very fragile, inconsistent from year to year, and often misleading for North Texas commits and signees in particular, because we don't have active subsites and subscribers through Rivals or 247. Offer lists are a much better measuring stick because they are consistent from year to year. The better the offer lists, the better the school is doing at recruiting, and actually outrecruiting other schools for the players we want. And according to FBS coaches our 2014 class was our best under Mccarney, including 2015.
  14. From a staff writer at the daily
  15. The 2014 class was by far his best in terms of signees' offer lists, and in terms of biggest role played on the team by any Mccarney class in year 2 (as true sophomores and redshirt freshman). The 2015 class was given a lot of hype, and it keeps being made out to be this really good class that was better than the ones before it, but it was not in terms of offer list and the results have been a mixed bad so far. It's promising, but it's not like the group has given a bunch of "can you believe he's only a true freshman?" performances outside of Roderick Young. I loved the Dillman pickup, thinking we would let him play QB first and move him to tight end as a failsafe. Just strictly as a tight end, I think the hype for him needs to be tempered. We were the only school that offered him as a tight end, he has only played the position in games on the JV level, and he didn't crack the rotation this year. Not cracking the rotation and redshirting as a true freshman is definitely not reason to write him off, but that plus that we were the only school to offer him as a tight end means he really hasn't done anything as a tight end to earn hype. Should he be given time to develop? Absolutely. Should he be considered a top signee? Definitely not yet.
  16. He just sent in his resume. His dad is his boss. He doesn't have to worry about facing repercussions for looking around. It's not like he sent in the application this past week, either. People are reading way too much into the resume submittal.
  17. I don't get it either. Our only shot at winning more than 3 games was Damarcus Smith being at least a borderline all-conference QB. And that was a long shot in its own.
  18. Dajon could've been okay. He had good talent, but I don't think he had anywhere close to what it took to save a sinking ship like this. There's a reason we were his only FBS offer. Sadly, he may have still been the best high school QB signed under Mccarney.
  19. Who knows? Last year we weren't technically the worst team in or division, but we lost to every team in our division. Then we didn't make the women's CUSA basketball tourney en route to a 24-loss season, and got beat by 30+ in the first round of the men's tourney. We'll see what basketball season has in store, although I'm not sure where a line is drawn.
  20. No bowl game this year for Rice, as they lose to UTSA and drop to 4-7, missing a bowl for the first time in 4 years. The same Rice team Coach Mac said was their best team since he took the North Texas job. http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2015/09/interesting-point-from-mccarney-this-could-be-rices-best-team.html/
  21. Harry, you're right. He did leave us in a bad spot and make so many empty promises. But maybe the biggest reason for frustration was how he sold us short, made excuses, and tried to leave fans to believe that many of the bad things were just a result of inherent occurrences. Inability to win recruiting battles? It's hard to recruit to North Texas. Losing a bunch of starters you didn't recruit? It's absurd for them to expect us to win the division. Loss to Rice? That's the best Rice team since I've been here (they're sitting at 4-6). And we all know Rice wasn't our only opponent he hyped up. And of course, all the "before I got here," BS. We're capable of more and it won't take a miracle to make that happen. Exactly. This isn't the NFL where the coach may have to put up with actual locker room cancers against his will, if the GM and/or owner want a certain player(s). Every player on this team was brought in under Mccarney. If the players are locker room cancers then that's on Mac for signing them.
  22. Yup. 13 straight road losses since.
  23. Good point. Still, this is the third time we've reached 10 losses in 11 games. Two of the three have happened under RV. I believe the switch to 12 games happened for the 2001 and 2002 seasons, then they went back to 11 for a few seasons, then made the switch permanently in 2006.
