Silly to think that KP urged this kid to follow him to Tech.

'16 WR Rico Bussey (Oklahoma) - SIGNED LOI
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
It is. And the thing is, there are plenty of players like this who have good offer lists yet don't have one school on their offer list who we shouldn't beat out regularly. Not one school on that offer list we should struggle against in head-to-head recruiting. Mccarney brought in a lot of players with good size for their position, offensively. Thing is, no other schools wanted them. Says a lot about a player's ability if he has good size yet still isn't getting offers. We signed those type of players, and they didn't do a thing for us under Mccarney. We need to start getting players like this who have the size and are still good players. Gotta win recruiting battles. Should have plenty more additions like this to come. -
Yup. He redshirted. Our AD is awful about that. I remember in 2014 Wylie Reinhardt was listed as a true sophomore. I used to think "I don't remember him playing last year as a true freshman. Then that year when we played UTEP, Reinhardt was put in the game at the end and blocked on one of Wilson's TD runs. Then after the game he posted on Twitter about getting his first game action in his career. Just one example, and there are plenty.

Nice! Looking at our roster, most of our receivers are outside guys, except Khan who has yet to play a down. Very realistic chance for this kid to get some early PT. -
MGB: Sunday recruiting blog (updated at 8:30)
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Quinn was never offered by bigger schools. IMO, I think you should raise your expectations at least a little. Chad Morris came in on the same time restraint and really made some impressive pickups and won some recruiting battles. Hell, look what Mccarney did with the 2011 class immediately after being hired. Flipped players from Tulsa when they were rolling (Chaz Sampson), Arizona (Kerry Swarn), got players with good offer lists like Cyril Lemon, Derek Akunne, Freddie Warner, Terrell Brooks, etc and Mccarney proved to be an awful recruiter. Recruiting on short notice isn't easy, but coaches get an added pitch just by being a new coach and being able to sell that to high school kids. No reason we shouldn't at least make some noise. -
Kid is from West(ish) Texas. If his family is okay with paying tuition I'm sure it makes a lot of sense with KP there now. Mccarney's recruiting is often criticized, as it should be, but his roster management was awful as well. We signed just 2 high school DEs between 3 classes (2013, 2014, and 2015). 2 defensive ends in 3 classes. And now one is gone. We've got just 6 scholarship DEs including Wheeler and former walkon Flusche. Of those 6, 3 are seniors and 3 are juniors. Very top heavy there. We really could use a couple good high school DEs this class, but we don't even have a DL coach. Rough spot right now.

MGB breaking news -- UNT picks up commitment
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
One down, 17 to go. Another example of pay off from keeping Perry. A kid offered under Mccarney. I expect that to be the case for a good amount of our high school signees. -
I would think if he's really between us and Tulsa then he's going to take an OV here. Definitely not a bad sign if we don't hear anything, but I don't think it indicates one school is ahead of the other.

Took an OV to Tulsa this weekend
-
That's an old offer. So is his Indiana offer. His Indiana offer came from when Littrell was there. There's no way he's being recruited by either at this point. Yet still, this recruitment has been quiet. Don't know what's going on here.

MGB: WKU forward talks about confrontation with Combs

And has taken them to an NCAA tournament appearance. But his recruiting hasn't been great and his results are not up to WKU standards. Such a drastic difference in standards and expectation. -

And yet that same coach, who has gone 4-0 against Benford, is still very much on the hot seat at WKU. -
That record of the revenue hires RV has made in the last decade is now down to 139 games under .500. And, unless the women can pull out a winning season, those hires will be looking at just 1 winning season out of 21. An AD keeping his job through that shows there is no performance-based lack of results that could possibly cause him to lose his job. He absolutely gets to keep his job, regardless of lack of how bad things have been.

Getting into semantics there
-
All good points. He's brought in a few decent players, but, as you indicated, it's nothing we could never hope to get from a new coach.
-
He went to 3 different colleges, actually. Again, yes kids should look at the depth chart. Yes you're correct that there's more of a chance for opportunity for a G5 team than most P5 teams. But it's silly for people on this board (not saying you) to automatically assume players will ride the pine If they choose a P5 team over us. Those assumptions have happened in the past quite frequently with players we go after who choose the P5 school.
-
You said Holston earlier today. And you used to say GWP last year as a player you didn't want to risk losing by letting go of Benford. He's assembled a decent roster. There are plenty of coaches who can do that and actually get the most out of their team.
-
And yet potentially losing them is a reason you don't want to part ways with a coach who can't run a successful program?
-
I hope our athletic department reads this thread. It really is embarrassing. It's one thing when they make excuses for why we've had such awful records in revenue sports lately, or say it's only a minority who are unsatisfied. But they can't scoff at the high school coaches complaining and saying it's an inferior process to other schools.

Confirmed Keith Frazier headed to UNT
BillySee58 replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Basketball
68 teams will make the NCAA tournament this year without Brown, Holston, Lawson, Combs, etc. A good coach can get us there at some point, with or without them. Those players will graduate at some point anyways. No guarantee those guys leave just because Benford does, anyways. -
Of course all kids should look at the depth charts of the schools they're considering. But at the same time, these kids want to make it to the NFL. They aren't going to make it to the NFL just because they chose a school where the playing time came by easier.
-
No, not QB. It's one thing when we consider a 6' QB being undersized. He's half a foot shorter than that. He could've been better than our QBs, but still not what we need. Ready for those standards to raise, haha
