Reviewing and comparing the 2016 class based on offer lists
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
I think those two definitely helped. KP landed 5 of the 14 B or better guys in 2015 (Wegmann, Howard, Harrison, Young, Combs). Also, our 2 A+ guys that year absolutely landed in our laps, with Dillman and McNair no longer having any other FBS options when we swooped in. So KP and some fortunate circumstances certainly helped big time there. I'm also looking forward to how the 2014 kids turn out. Definitely some early all-CUSA potential shown from guys like Wilson, Miles, Goree, Ivery, Garner, and Mcclain. Really good core there. Hopefully we see Chumley show why P5 schools wanted him as a pass catcher. -
Reviewing and comparing the 2016 class based on offer lists
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
Off the top of my head, the ratio wasn't great but I think all the "B" or better guys became all-CUSA (Y'Barbo, Zach Orr, Bellazin). Definitely a group that did a great job staying intact and maximizing their abilities. Just looked. By my count only those 3 out of the 12 high school signees were "B" or better (25%). Dodge went juco heavy, and it was hard to win recruiting battles when every opposing coach could easily say he was about to get fired. -
For those who aren't familiar, I've made a scale in the past to evaluate our signees solely based on the opinions of college coaches, and who offered them at various stages in their recruitment. Since we've been in CUSA all of our all-CUSA players with the exception of Brelan Chancellor have been "B" or better on the scale. The scale goes as follows: a "C" grade means we were the only FBS offer, a "C+" grade means one other FBS offer, a "B" grade means at least 3 total FBS offers, a "B+" means 3-5 FBS offers with the offers being impressive (i.e. a P5 offer), an "A" means at least 6 FBS offers, and an "A+" means 10 or more total D1 offers. Littrell's first class - 2016 C - 6 (Wilson, Muhammad, Fine, Baulkman, Wheeler, Ejiya) C+ - 1 (Moore) B - 4 (Hamilton, Anthony, Hair-Griffin, Hayes) B+ - 2 (Nic Smith, Turner) A - 2 (William Johnson, Henson) A+ - 1 (Bussey) 56% B or better Mccarney's first class - 2011 C - 8 (Jimmerson, Ellard, Mcnulty, Lee, Mason, Stojkovic, Osborn, Shaw) C+ - 6 (Jamone Greer, Cooper Jones, Whitfield, Polk, Marcus Smith, Micah Thompson) B - 3 (Akunne, Austin Orr, Lincoln) B+ - 5 (Brooks, Sampson, Swarn, Warner, Power) A - 1 (Lemon) A+ - 0 39% B or better Mccarney's last class - 2015 C - 3 (Ozougwu, Robinson, Thompson) C+ - 6 (Dam. Smith, Bendy, Brooks, Munden, Woodworth, Dak. Smith) B - 9 (Bradley, Preston, Murray, Gray, Howard, Harrison, Wegmann, Grindle, Ochs) B+ - 1 (Young) A - 2 (Barr, Combs) A+ - 2 (McNair, Dillman) 61% B or better Mccarney's best class - 2014 C - 2 (Jalen Montgomery, Trevor Moore) C+ - 2 (Mcclain, Rutherford) B - 6 (Tillman Johnson, Josh Greer, Akii Smith, Means, Andrew Jones, Tauaalo) B+ - 2 (Wilson, Garner) A - 3 (Adams, Ivery, Davis) A+ - 3 (Goree, Miles, Chumley) 78% B or better I included grayshirts with the class they were recruited and committed in. I love the ratio on that 2014 class. It's too bad it was a small one, and we lost two of its top signees before they even played a down. Not a bad ratio for Littrell's first class, but definitely room to improve. I think we should shoot for around 70% on up. Really going to need all these signees to show up and stay on campus.

Position Group Rankings Part 1 - Defensive Line
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
He had a knee injury this year, and he just graduated. I saw his name removed towards the end of the year. Didn't ask if it was because of the injury or maybe he just was happy with his degree and going on from there. As for Julius Combes, I only included scholarship players. He's a promising walkon, but all he's done here is redshirt. As for any walkon, you really don't project them playing much until they first actually prove it and make it on the field. -
Position Group Rankings Part 1 - Defensive Line
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
No, but I don't think I'd move them up a spot if he were eligible. As it is, he's a redshirt freshman in his first year with the program. I think he could help this year, possibly even start. Don't think it's likely he'd be a difference maker right off the bat. -
Todd Mcshay and the Richmond scout team just scored on Cosh's defense.

Which of our '16 HS class will see the field first?
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, at 6'7" you can expect Anthony at tackle. Could be between Creighton Barr and TJ Henson. Maybe Trey Keenan, like MGT said. Dark horse could be Elex Woodworth who played a bit as a true freshman. -
Hey guys. I'm starting a little series that will lead up to spring ball. I'm going to be ranking our 7 position groups from 1 to 7 in order of which groups I expect to be the strongest heading into spring ball, and leading into the season. 1 being our best group IMO, on down. Also going to go in depth on the players and signings we expect to have here in August. First up is the defensive line. Losses: DE Chad Polk, DT Austin Orr Top Returners: Sr DE Jarrian Roberts, Sr DE Malik Dilonga, Sr DT Sir Calvin Wallace, So DT Rod Young Additions: JUCO DE Josh Wheeler (on campus), HS DE Joseph Ozougwu (Grayshirt - on campus), Transfer Fr Bryce English (on campus - may have to sit out this season) Other returning players: Jr DE Tillman Johnson, Sr DE Jareid Combs, Jr DE Andy Flusche, Jr DT Syd Moore, So DT TJ Tauaalo, Fr DT RD Wegmann Last year was incredibly rough, so our defense didn't have any real bright spots as far as units, but did have a few individuals as bright spots. Jarrian Roberts and Rod Young's true freshman performance qualified. Jareid Combs disappointed with failing to get a sack, but it usually takes JUCOs a year to get acclimated. As such, if Josh Wheeler can crack an experienced DE rotation then that's good news for our team. Tillman Johnson also had a rough, injury-plagued year but I have a lot of confidence in his ability and I think he takes a starting spot with the new staff. Just like most of our position groups, we're going to see a lot of familiar faces, however, it's also guys who couldn't do enough to help us win more than one game. What I like about this position group is that it's one of our deeper groups. There's a good mix of experience and wildcards like Syd Moore and Jareid Combs. With a new staff there will be a lot of competition, so I think we see a decent starting four emerge with some experienced rotational guys. Position group rank: 4th

BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I think our depth at tackle and on the offensive line is about as good as anywhere on the team, save for running backs (not saying a whole lot). Miles and Murray have a lot of playing time early in their careers, Hayes should push Murray, and Rentfro has been our third tackle since basically our bowl run. If Anthony plays early then he good foozball player. I'm going with Tyler Wilson. I think he's the most likely to be on kick coverage and kickoff return, so it could be the first play of the year we see him. -
MGB: Augie DeBiase talks about his plans
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, I have very little doubt that we choose not to offer. I've said it before, but the juco or prep route is good for qualifiers who are either late bloomers or didn't get good enough exposure in high school. He got great exposure in high school. -
History says there will assuredly be some before spring. We've got a junior day before spring ball starts. That's life for an FBS football coach. I think we could have a commit by May. I don't remember about this past recruiting cycle, but our first class of 2015 offer after 2014 signing day was that Sunday, 4 days after NSD.
-
No one was actually bagging on him. People started joking that we should keep his actual stats (because his maxprep stats were missing about 700 yards) a secret and make him sound like he isn't very good, so other teams wouldn't want to snatch him away from us. I know people close to players often read message boards and only single out what they perceive as negative comments against their player. However, the only ones made were completely in jest, as evidenced by silly 'jazz hands' and 'spirit finger' gifs. Here are some posts in this very thread So sorry for the misunderstanding and sarcasm lost in translation, but as you can see people on here were actually very complimentary of him and excited about the prospects of him coming here. Thanks for joining the board!

Not just us. A lot of good JUCOs out there, a lot of good players going that route both from high school and bouncing back from D1 ball. I expect more JUCOs in years to come, partially due to a small high school class and partially due to them just having no problem getting them if they like them.
-
Making inroads this year is huge. If they truly did a good job with that then much more good happened than just whatever ratings you see.
-
He was a 2-star on scout http://www.scout.com/player/47797-jamario-thomas?s=108 and it wasn't really "some sites but not others" back then, because I think it was just Scout and Rivals. This was before ESPN did recruiting, and 247 didn't exist yet. Unless there was another recruiting site I'm unaware of. I know Rivals had him at 3-stars, but I didn't know they dropped him from 4. If we go by a player's highest rating at any point in high school then Kevin Dillman was a 5-star QB at one point. That's also a big difference between a player who just barely achieves a 4-star rating on one recruiting site on the juco level and a player who gets it out of high school. The high school player will have a much better offer list, and usually much more potential. Heck, Dunbar and Thomas as high-2 and low-3 stars had better offer lists out of high school than Montgomery did out of juco. I expect something similar out of William Johnson. A good, consistent starter for two years. Similar level of play to Montgomery who had a similar rating, and similar level of play to Andrew Power who had a similar offer list.
-
I don't think we've ever had a 4-star out of high school, as long as there have been recruiting sites. Can Montgomery was a 4-star out of juco on scout.
-
Same. He got some good players, and a few with decent offer lists, but we didn't really win many head-to-head recruiting battles. Lost Keenen Johnson to Tulsa, Texas State stopped recruiting Hamilton and didn't even send in an LOI, and some other similar examples. Just 9 high school players this class is a risky move, and will likely force him to continue recruiting juco players. Next class is going to be very important. He's got the timing excuse, and he did a decent job finding those players whose recruitments had cooled, but he's gotta start winning more recruiting battles going forward. Very comparable first class to Mccarney, which isn't bad. Especially if he can actually follow it up with a decent class, unlike Mccarney.

WFAA: New North Texas coach salvages class with late surge
BillySee58 replied to Aldo's topic in Mean Green Football
Hey, @Or, we appreciate the article, but there are some mistakes that need to be cleaned up. Michael Lawrence and Domo Omerhi are actually coming in as walkons and Keenen Johnson signed with Tulsa. Also, as of right now, William Johnson has not signed with us.- 24 replies

BillySee58 replied to Aldo's topic in Mean Green Football
I think he was talking about Chumley. Is that who you meant had bad mechanics, @GMG24 But yeah, we were talking about this last week. Littrell didn't really use tight ends at North Carolina, Gronk was actually before he was an OC, and the fact that we didn't go after any juco tight ends said all we needed to know about how much he cares about getting production from the tight end position. Seriously, no reason to not move Dillman. Maybe guard for Reinhardt, and H-Back for Kelvin Smith?- 24 replies

'16 LB/DE La'Darius Hamilton Corrigan-Camden - SIGNED LOI
BillySee58 replied to MGNation92's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
With Texas State not even sending him an LOI, it's another example of getting a kid with a decent offer list but not having to beat out nearly all the schools who offered. Again, another reason why 3 FBS offers should be on the low end for our high school signees going forward. -
Posted already in the FB forum. But he signed with Tulsa. That's tough. Hasn't been a bad signing day, but we've only signed 9 high school kids and a grayshirt (Ozougwu).
