Regarding threads for players we aren't recruiting
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
It seems like the purpose behind this thread has still not been taken well. The purpose behind the recruiting forum is to update everyone on who we are actively recruiting. If there is a player we are not recruiting who one of us would like to see us recruit, posting about them on here does nothing. In that circumstance the coaching staff needs to be contacted, so something can actually be done. This thread has just become a default thread for people to post about players we aren't recruiting. That is not what it was intended for. It was intended to encourage reaching out to the coaching staff about these type of players before posting about them. Please don't take this personally, as I am simply trying to reiterate this for everyone. -

Would be optimal to get an extra year of separation between Fine and Pearson by allowing Pearson to redshirt. -
I really felt like the downfall of the Mccarney was not only due to bad recruiting, but due to bad recruiting when we had momentum and things going for us as a program. Mccarney failed miserably with a 2012 class filled with players with weak offer lists, coming off a very impressive 5-7 season where he nearly matched Dodge's win total after just one season. Then in 2013 we struggled despite the announcement that we would be moving to CUSA. Finally, between our HOD bowl game and nine months later when we played our first game, recruiting really was unimpressive despite finally being able to show off a bowl victory and impressive season to recruits. That was the beginning of the end before the 2014 season even started. We have a lot going for us. It's time for us to start getting big time recruits who 5 or more other FBS programs want. Or get players here and there with lower-tier P5 offers like Iowa State, Kansas, Purdue. We're close and it's awesome.

Did you reach out to the coaching staff regarding these guys? -
Super premature that we should be the premier program in CUSA west? It's a projection, not a declaration for this year.
-
We are tied for first in the division. And while I'm not specifically referring to this year, given our recruiting base there is no reason we shouldn't be a premier program in this division. We finally competent coaches and administration who can help us realize that, and it's great.

We're in every game, so we for sure have a chance.

See, while this should not be completely overlooked, I think it is being overblown. Let's look at our starting offensive linemen. Trey Keenan was recruited to play in the air raid at Tech, and couldn't crack the lineup because he wasn't big enough. You would think this scheme fits him better than Mac's scheme. Sam Rice was also recruited to a similar offense in the run and shoot of June Jones at SMU. Creighton Barr was recruited by Mac, but he is a smaller-than-average FBS center so a similar deal to Keenan. And for Garrett Gunter, he's a walkon JUCO transfer so he wasn't recruited to play in a specific offense, since he wasn't recruited at all. Plus he played in a similar offense at TVCC. This scheme change does seem to hinder Murray and Miles, as they are more hulking, run-blocking tackles but they would be getting exposed in Mccarney's offense too if they can't pass block. I think Woodworth fits well enough either way. So again, 3 of the 5 starting offensive linemen were not signed to play in Mac's offense, and actually started their college careers in similar offenses.

DRC: What happened to the Apogee edge?
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
More specifically, his recruiting. Because he was the coach for all those wins at Apogee as well. I always thought the Apogee advantage was being a bit overrated, since we were really just winning games against mediocre teams. In 2011 we went 4-2 at home, but the the 4 teams we beat went a combined 8-40 that year (Indiana, FAU, ULM, and MTSU). In 2012 we went 3-2 at home, with the most impressive win of the Mccarney era outside of the 2013 season, as we beat Louisiana Lafayette, who finished the season 9-4. However, our other two wins came against a 2-11 South Alabama program in their first year of FBS play, and a 2-9 FCS team in Texas Southern. We also lost at home to a 5-7 Troy team, very agonizingly. In 2013 we were just a good team. But then in 2014 we went 4-2 with the 4 teams we beat (SMU, Nicholls State, FAU, and FIU) going a combined 8-40 again, just like in 2011. We also lost at Apogee to Southern Miss that year for their only conference win of the season. Then last year we were just awful and finally saw the effects of filling recruiting classes with players no one else offered. Point being, we won a lot games we should've won. Point also being, if Mac could win the games he did at home, no reason Littrell shouldn't win much more, as well as actually being competent and having a chance on the road. -

I'll never understand how people have such a hard problem understanding that 1AA/FCS IS STILL DIVISION 1! Must be infuriating for FCS fans. Apparently Hank does not know the difference. Not surprising.

California is completely different than Texas when it comes to school sizes of top football teams. In California the best athletic programs are typically at private schools, as opposed to over-populated public schools like in Texas. For example, Concord De La Salle, which had the movie made about their record-breaking winning streak, only has about 1,000 students. The schools have ridiculous tuitions (Concord De La Salle at almost $20K), but athletes are given scholarships in many cases. Long story short, Salesian is a recognizable program that plays respectable programs and is in a recruiting hub. Visibility is not an issue for Blosser.

You could easily replace Mccarney with RV in that statement. I think post-mortem criticism of RV has become somewhat taboo at this point since we got our wish and apparently shouldn't complain anymore but be grateful for what he did do. That being said, he was the ring leader when it came to complacency with results. How often did he pin attendance issues on fans and make it seem as if it were our obligation to attend games, or say nationwide attendance was down (Men's basketball) when it factually was not, and never admit that results should be better here? Or admit he had fielded an alarmingly low percentage of our graduates during his tenure as MGC members? He also said during the recent football coaching search that a coach said something along the lines of "Coach, you guys have been getting your teeth kicked in for decades, why are they just now getting upset about it?" Translation of RV telling that story: "You guys are wrong. I'm not doing a bad job. North Texas is traditionally bad, so why are you getting upset that we're still bad? North Texas being bad is the expectation." We should win at North Texas. The excuse makers are (mostly) gone. This isn't a hard place to recruit to (Mac), especially not by CUSA standards. We haven't always been bad and we should expect to be good (RV), and if we aren't we should recognize that as a problem instead of being complacent.

This board in general has been so quick to jump to touting Littrell's superiority over Mccarney at nearly every turn. I'm almost surprised there weren't any "if Mac were still here we would've only had 56 passing yards," after the Florida game. The truth is, Mccarney had his fair share of 2017 offers out before he was fired, and he had more commits at this point in 2014 and 2015 than Littrell currently has. Things are very different, but if Littrell really is such an upgrade then he won't need Mccarney's shortcomings to be embellished. -

MGB: Five thoughts following UNT's win over Bethune-Cookman
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Kind of. He did play the first game against Idaho as a true freshman, but he was awarded a hardship waiver and given the "medical redshirt" for that year. -
I'm still interested to see how we do once we face QBs who can actually hurt us through the air. Davis was not good through the air, especially outside those downfield heaves. He was not good in the intermediate passing game, and Brihm was awful last night. The pass rush looks good, but we really have not had to worry about an accurate QB when bringing pressure. If we can hold up there then we have the makings of a pretty good defense.

It is human nature to isolate the non-positive comments when reading on these boards about yourself or someone you are close to. That's just how it is. That is how it almost always is with family and friends of players on message boards. But there has also been much more positive than negative about him on this board. With all due respect, you have to realize that on a message board fans are going to analyze things critically. Please don't confuse that with lack of support, because these are the people who really care what happens.

Whatever height you want to tell yourself Mason Fine is, it was obvious that when the pocket started to collapse his height became a major negative factor immediately. He is going to have to learn to mitigate that disadvantage.
