'17 WR Tariq Woolen (Arlington Heights) [Verbal: UTKFC]
BillySee58 replied to GMG24's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Was in town for the game. -
His height absolutely was a factor when he wasn't able to get it out quick. He was getting it out quick, and putting it right on the money, then on his first incompletion it was the first time he had to actually hold the ball a little and give the defense some time to put pressure. Not only was the throw not even close, it honestly looked like he didn't see where the receiver was. Whenever the pocket collapsed he couldn't get a good throw off. There was the afore mentioned throw, one time he scrambled out, one time he swung the ball to Wilson on what was basically a lateral, and the other times he was sacked. The good news is he typically gets the ball out early, he has a quick release, he can throw a receiver open, and he can put the ball where it needs to be before a receiver gets out of his break. He is going to have to do those things to have a chance at this level. As someone said, he's probably closer to 5'8" than 6', and redshirting or development won't change that.

I agree. I watched the film this summer and he was our most consistent coverage man. LBs got beat a lot, and Gray was beat plenty as well, plus the freshmen. Critically, Davis did struggle against Mike Thomas at Southern Miss, but he was an all-CUSA guy and drafted so everyone did both on our team and other teams. Other than that no one really looked like they had any substantial advantage over Davis. Glad we have him back.

And Starkel was committed to Oklahoma State and competed at the elite 11 at this point.
-
I never said I thought Fine could last a whole year. Although a small part of my point was that redshirting is not going to change the fact that he is an undersized QB.
-
I'm doing passing yards, rushing yards, catches, receiving yards, tackles, sacks, and interceptions. If you want to predict other statistical leaders like touchdowns, go ahead. Here are mine. Passing yards - Alec Morris Rushing yards - Jeff Wilson Catches - Kenny Buyers Receiving yards - Terian Goree Tackles - Kishawn McClain Sacks - Tillman Johnson Interceptions - Chad Davis

One thing I've said before is that it's incorrect to think short QBs need more time to develop. Look at a lot of short QBs who were good enough to play on the FBS level, and a lot of the ones who play do so early on. Bogenschutz played as a true freshman, Rakeem Cato started as a true freshman, Kellen Moore and Brent Stockstill started as RS Freshmen. All guys 6' or shorter. If a player is good enough to get a scholarship at that height, then he has to be well-developed and productive by the end of his high school career. He actually has to be a good football player, and not just someone who could be one day. A 6'4" QB does not have to be well-developed or productive to get an FBS scholarship. If Fine is going to be a productive FBS-level player, we're likely going to see proof early on anyways.

Kenny Buyers and His Transition to WR
BillySee58 replied to MGNation92's topic in Mean Green Football
Would you say he's the John Kuhn of this team? I think Mike McCarthy would. -
I think it's different with a high school student-athlete. I believe this is the first year the NCAA has activated the rule where freshmen have to mandatorily redshirt if they fall in between the gap of qualifying yet not meeting that minimum end-of-high-school GPA requirement. For some schools, like Rice, that gap is non-existent. I believe it is a 2.4 non-weighted high school GPA. Either way, I don't think that is an option for Raveon since he is a JUCO transfer.
-
If by some miracle he is cleared, I would hope he is redshirted at this point. Focus on getting academics in order here, and not waste a season of eligibility with almost no pre-season practice. Although I really doubt Littrell himself would say he's no longer in the plans if there was still a chance.
-
Right, but I'm pointing out that it's not like after high school he chose football over wrestling because he had a scholarship on the table. Either way your point is still possible, but I'd imagine he'll be coaching football there at some point. Not a lot of high school coaches have that much division 1 football experience.
-
He didn't have a scholarship out of high school. Came in as a walkon.
-
Not at all. Byrd has 83 yards as a sophomore. Wilson had over 800.
-
Can't wait to see AM #5 sling it against SMU!
-
I think people, coaches and fans, should expect a bad snap here and there by Rice. He's never played center in college, and if he's still botching snaps at this point it's going to happen in the games. Just have to hope they don't come at critical junctures.

MGB: Breaking news -- Hoston will not play for UNT
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
This hurts more for next year than this year, IMO. Next year when was all these JUCOs would have a year under their belt, and spring practice, as well as familiarity with the scheme. Good news is at least this gives us an extra spot for the 2017 class. Not sure if Johnson and Hayes opened up a spot in either class by not showing up. -
He was a freak. He was had the most raw strength of any defensive lineman I played my senior year as a center, and we played schools like Allen and Trinity. He also was very athletic, and would chase down ball carriers who broke into the open field as hard as any defensive tackle I saw in high school. His problem was he wasn't great with his hands and didn't have good technique. Very possibly could've been his downfall at K-State, where you need to be a good technician playing at college and BIG XII level, especially at 6' even. Should be a good fit here. Too bad it's only a year, but at least it could be a nice stop gap for English.
-
I played against him in high school. Just saw he was on the roster and was about to make a thread on him. This is his 5th year out of high school (graduated in 2012), so maybe he had a medical redshirt or something along the way. I never found out what happened to him and his college career, but good to see this turn of events.

Maybe the worst 5-year stretch of QB recruiting in NCAA history, just looking at production. 9 QBs signed by Mccarney in those 5 years: Cooper Jones, Andrew McNulty, Brent Osborn, Brock Berglund, Dajon Williams, Josh Greer, Connor Means, Caleb Chumley, and Damarcus Smith. 9 quarterbacks, who had a combined 31 seasons of eligibility left at the time of their signings, combined to win a total of 5 games in which they started at the division 1 level. 1 of which was against FCS Nicholls State.

'17 OL Josh Donovan (College Station HS) [Verbal: TVCC]
BillySee58 replied to GMG24's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Doesn't sound like that skipped around. Just sounds like your brother got your mom's height, relative to their respective gender. Either way, people often point to exception or instances, but the takeaway should be that if you recruit kids with the assumption that they are going to get taller, you'll be let down more times than not. It's good recruiting practice to assume they won't get any taller, and any height gains are pleasant surprises. -

What is your take on why King didn't have any other FBS offers? That has a been a hot question since he committed. -
The blue shirts were not more risky. You also have to consider the Hayes and Johnson committed about 7 months ago. There was a lot still left to do on their end before ever making it here. The blueshirts/recent signees were signed after the spring semester, when they had either proven to get the work done to be eligible or were close.

MGB: What impact will losing JC signees make?
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Wow. So weird case there with Derricott. -
Tyler Wilson is going to be a player. Not the fastest guy, but he makes people miss.
-
The real question is how many guys do we have who are not just pushing 260 on the roster, but are pushing 260 on an actual scale.
