  1. It should be used for whatever that person wants. It's their own Twitter account and they can tweet what they want. The coaches get paid to recruit, and we pay to consume the end product. That's why their supposed lack of effort in recruiting is complained about.
  2. Sewell won't hurt because he is unranked. Donovan is the one that would hurt a little because he is a 5.4 2-star. But rivals ratings are a joke for us. For example, none of our commits have been reevaluated since their first evaluation except...... Cameron Johnson. They reevaluated him because he was a 5.7 3-star which is barely short of a 4-star rating and the same rating as guys who typically have 10+ P5 offers. Why did they reevaluate him? Probably because they didn't want to have that type of rating on a player who was committed to us and had no P5 offers. And a school that has no subscribers so no voiced disapproval of the rating downgrade. Again, the major reason why offer lists are much more important when it comes to evaluating the recruits that we, North Texas, are after.
  3. Those are the schools who had offered at the time they committed to us. That is important information. Yeah, I really don't factor in non-FBS offers in my rankings. Looks good the more you have, but FBS offers is where the offer lists stand to impress.
  4. Sure, but that doesn't apply anymore to safety than JUCOs at other positions. Plus, a mid-term enrollee gives you a decent shot at them being able to contribute earlier in that first year. And grades don't make sense timeline-wise, because he said they stopped communicating before he would've had time to get bad grades. Yeah, it is pretty obvious something happened during the season, or maybe even before. Was just saying the future at the safety position the next two years isn't really much more certain than OL or WR, if at all.
  5. Those are four guys who didn't play meaningful snaps this season, including a current high schooler and two guys who came in as walkons. If those are options to choose from at DB then so are guys like Jalen Thomas, Chandler Anthony, RD Wegmann, Dakoda Newman, etc. on the offensive line and guys like Quinetin Jackson, Deion Hair Griffin, Daniel Khan, etc. at receiver. I can definitely see the possibility of what you're saying that the coaches would rather focus their JUCO efforts at OL and WR, but there is definitely enough uncertainty regarding the future of the safety position to warrant a spot this class on a JUCO safety if our coaches really wanted one.
  6. Well just from watching the plays I'd say he's made some great calls from the booth, John.
  7. Yeah, I wish more coaches had this mentality. Then they'd stop complaining that four years isn't sufficient time to turn a program around. And Benford would be gone!
  8. Where are these disgruntled fans you're speaking of? I see the fans who have chosen to critically evaluate the state of our recruiting and compare it to our peers coming to a similarly less-than glowing evaluation. Don't see how that is anyone being disgruntled. Or how this means they aren't hopeful.
  9. Going by offer lists, Littrell's 2016 class would've ranked between Mccarney's 2nd best class (2015) and his 3rd best class (2011). And, obviously, behind Mccarney's best class (2014). This class looks on track to be similar to the 2016 class. But yeah, it's a shame this board is so strongly opposed to any hint of being critical of Littrell. You can support the guy, be a fan of him, and still critically evaluate the state of the program. I think salesmanship is an overwhelming part of the equation. Good salesmen can use any situation to their advantage. Have a worse record than the team you're recruiting against? Pitch playing time and chance to be part of turnaround. Have a better record? Pitch stability, championships, chance to make NFL, etc. Anyone can identify these pitches, but what separates the good recruiters from the pack is their ability to get these recruits to really buy what they're pitching. Recruits will say different reasons brought them to committing, but the coaches are the ones who get them to buy into those justifications for committing. Winning does nothing but help, but it isn't going to yield top-of-the-conference classes for subpar or average recruiting staffs. Recruiting is too competitive, other coaches are too good at recruiting, and recruits are too impressionable for that to be the case.
  10. From my experience following recruiting, the good recruiting coaches start getting good pulls right off the bat, and don't need on-field success to start getting the substance on the recruiting trail. Withers at Texas State is an example, as is Frank Wilson at UTSA who I believe had the top class in CUSA before he ever coached a game at UTSA. PJ Fleck signed the top class in the MAC in 2014 by getting some good recruits before his first season started (in 2013) and was able to keep that momentum rolling in recruiting despite going 1-11 that year. Tom Herman was getting 5-star commits (Oliver and Elliott who eventually signed elsewhere) before he ever coached a game at UH. Butch Jones in 2014 signed a top 5 class at Tennessee despite going 5-7 that year. Littrell doesn't seem to be a bad recruiting head coach, but I don't see him threatening for a top CUSA class or getting a bunch of players with head-turning offer lists. And I don't think winning suddenly makes that happen. Doesn't mean he won't keep this thing trending up and get us some all-conference guys. Also, his opportunistic recruiting helps offset some potential deficiencies in winning true head-to-head battles.
  11. The first two things I'm looking for in a QB's film is arm strength and throwing motion. So many times I see people posting about QBs with great stats but no offers, and wondering why we or other schools aren't offering. If they're at least 6' tall, it's almost undoubtedly because they have an ugly throwing motion and/or inadequate arm strength. Here's why throwing motion matters. With a football, if you can't consistently throw a tight spiral, that severely hurts accuracy. It is so much harder to throw a football accurately if it comes out wobbly (even just a little) than as a spiral, and if you can't throw accurately you have no shot. That's what killed Tebow. It's hard to consistently throw darts when you whip the ball down by your waist every time you throw. If they have adequate size, throwing motion, and arm strength then they have D1 capabilities. Once that has been established I start looking for more advanced skills. Throws to wide open receivers or receivers facing the QB when the ball is thrown doesn't show me anything. Those plays might as well not be on the tape IMO. I look for patience and feel in the pocket. Scrambling every other play on the tape is not a good look IMO, especially if the scrambling is premature. With throws I want to see the QB hitting the open windows in the zone, hitting receivers before they get out of their break, and, most impressively, throwing the ball in a spot where the adjustment the receiver has to make on the ball helps give them extra separation from the DB that they were not getting from just running the route alone. Also referred to as throwing a receiver open. Those skills in that last paragraph are what translate to the next level and separate QBs who have similar capabilities.
  12. I am aware of the situation, but hadn't heard the coaches show or podcast. Also hadn't checked the roster in a while so not sure at what point they were removed. Just makes it a little more official and indicates the severity of the offenses.
  13. Not sure if this has been reported or mentioned, but they are no longer listed on the roster on meangreensports. Hope they can work their way back, but it's apparent their violations were pretty serious ones.
  14. What I said: We are not worthy of a bowl by 1976 standards. Back when there were only 12 bowl games. Now there are over 30. What I did not say: Our 1976 team was not worthy of a bowl.
  15. *Tucson
  16. Do we deserve a bowl by 1976 standards? No. But it's 2016 and the reality is the standards for being a bowl team are this low.
  17. Strong is maybe 60% the recruiter that Herman is.
  18. Why not? He's a tremendous recruiter, so at Texas he's going to get in classes that are absolutely loaded and he's beaten Florida State, Louisville, and Oklahoma at Houston. Plus he's called plays in a national championship game at Ohio State so he's been on the big stage, even if not as a head coach.
  19. He lost to teams that program should have no business losing to (Kansas, Iowa State) and had a losing record at Texas. That's the premier program in the top high school football state in the country. He greatly underachieved. I have no interest in that program, but that's just the fact of the matter.
  20. I'm still just completely baffled that there are human beings in power who allowed Rick Villarreal to make the decisions he did for as long as he did. He either kept Benford because 1. He didn't want to fire all three big three sport coaches in one calendar year or 2. He had too much pride to fold after doubling down on Benford so much. Such a shame. I know it's beating a dead horse, but this is just ridiculous. And Littrell and Mitchell may be good (Mitchell's team off to a horrible start) but there is no way RV deserved to have any hand in the process at all for those two hires. Give Baker the power and hold him accountable.
  21. I gotta think it'll be Fine until we see something substantial that it might not be.
  22. Unless he's graduating in 3 years, he'd have to sit out next year and be eligible for only 1 season (in 2018).
