Potential Transfers on Campus this week
BillySee58 replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Kelley has another two years of eligibility. I think he's ahead of Isadore, O'Hara, and Pearson if we land him. As for Jefferson, if they offer him they had better hope he makes a big impact. Adding a senior for one year means one more spot to replace next class, and one less scholarship player we'll have on our roster in 2018 and beyond than if we used the spot on a player with multiple years of eligibility left. -
Let's hear it, Mean Green fans! Let's hear it, Wren!

MGB: Arkansas State AD: UNT has made a "huge commitment"
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
By what math? We won 12 games last year and 8 games this year. That's 20 in the last two years. Not 20 in the last three or four. As for what he's supposed to say, how about something along the lines of "it's an opportunity he wanted to pursue and the location was something he couldn't pass up given his background and family situation." To make it sound like his father is the only reason he would ever consider going from Arkansas State to UNT makes him sound ridiculous, when it's public knowledge that we gave him 188% of the salary they would've given him, and we undeniably are in a location that is more advantageous for recruiting. -

We almost doubled the salary they could offer, and we are located in DFW vs. Jonesboogie while being in a better conference but A-State is the better job- 16 replies

So that sounds to me like a matter of who has the harder transition. Also not sure what that has to do with who the better hire is/was. I don't see how a coach could be seen as a better hire in part because they are inheriting a roster that fits their scheme less. If the question were "who would you be more impressed to see have success early," then I could see how that would factor in. But I didn't think that was the question.

Your statement confuses me on what your question actually is. How does the sport they coach or the condition of roster they inherit have anything to do with who is the better hire at the time of their hirings?

That is very awesome. That's a very impressive young man. -

Which is crazy when you consider this is already going to be his 6th season out of high school. If he is still here in 2018 that'll be his 7th year out of high school. Dude could have a dang PhD before his eligibility is up. -
I've noticed with Vito's blog posts recently that when mentioning players who might transfer he no longer brings up the grad transfer route for Combs and instead mentions that Combs still has his redshirt available to sit out a year. Maybe both are still options, but it sounds like Vito has backed off of the grad transfer possibility and is indicating that he would have to do a conventional transfer and sit out a year. His remaining redshirt is irrelevant if being a grad transfer were an option. If that is the case, that's a huge difference, both for the appeal of transferring to Combs and the appeal of Combs to teams who may pursue him.

Benford will end his Mean Green coaching career 0-6 against WKU. And these have been down years for them, too.

This is more proof that it's a down year for sushi fans across the country. You can't compare the number of people eating sushi on a year-over-year basis.
-
Where did you hear that? This is only his 6th semester of college
-
I wouldn't count on it, but at the same time this is his last chance to make something out of his college career. If he's getting advice from anyone who has any clue, they'd be strongly encouraging him to come back and make the most of this opportunity or his career of playing meaningful basketball is likely over.

Here is what we have coming back to next year, going off of the best player at each position 1-5, based on the conventional fit for each position: PG - RS SO Ryan Woolridge SG - SO AJ Lawson SF - RS SR Keith Frazier PF - SR Jeremy Combs C - JR Rickey Brice Bench: PG/SG - JR Jamichael Brown SG/SF - JR Amaad Wainwright SG/SF - JR Allante Holston PF - JR Shane Temara PF/C - FR Zach Simmons PG/SG - RS JR/SR Greg White-Pittman PF/C - RS JR Khalil Fuller So if our new coach can keep these guys, he will only have one spot left to sign his own player. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that a good coach would be able to get that roster over .500 and being a factor come CUSA tourney time.

18 DT/DL Dayton LeBlanc (Denton Ryan) (Verbal 2-26-17)
BillySee58 replied to BTG_Fan1's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
They do. Their recruiting has really picked up since they hired Stoops You're right in that if he stays committed to us the recruiting sites likely won't re-evaluate/re-rate him, but P5 schools don't care what recruiting sites rate a player during his junior year (or senior year). A players rating doesn't dictate how or which schools will recruit them. It's the other way around. -
By playing in only four games this year and having never used a redshirt to this point in his college career, Frazier will easily qualify for a hardship waiver/medical redshirt. Whether he chooses to go that route, be it here or at another school, is to be determined. He also could go and try and play overseas, or maybe even the d-league. But either way, he still has another year of eligibility at this point. Hopefully he commits to using his last chance at D1 college basketball here for us next year.

We are officially eliminated from CUSA tourney contention. And Benford has surely coached his last game his in Denton.

Did Seth Have To Good Of A First Season?
BillySee58 replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
You're not wrong that Mac won 5 games his first year here, but the team he inherited went 3-9 the season before. Although they only had 1 win when Dodge was fired mid season. -

DRC source: Former Guyer, ASU WR has interest in UNT

We can count him towards 2018, even if he's out of eligibility. As long as he blueshirts. And we do still have a spot left for the 2017 class. Here is the real issue. We get 25 spots a year. We are projected to have 76 scholarship players next year if all signees make it in, everyone currently here stays, and all blueshirts make it in and are awarded scholarships (probably won't all happen). 5 of those guys aren't blueshirts and count towards our 2018 class. This means we likely only have 20 spots left in 2018. We also have 19 scholarship seniors for next year. Ellis would make 20. Lose 20 scholarship seniors, with only 20 spots left in the upcoming recruiting class. That would mean we would be looking at, at most, 76 scholarship players for 2018. And that's only if all of the current juniors, sophomores, freshmen, signees, and commits are still here by 2018 (extremely impossible). Even with blueshirts in 2018, who would count towards 2019, you'd be looking at probably low 70s scholarship players again. This is why we have to be very picky with giving scholarships to jucos and grad transfers. We were playing with about 71 or 70 by my count. I think this issue has been overdramatized. The 25 player/class cap had been in effect for 4 recruiting classes by the time the 2016 season started, for everybody. That, plus even if schools are full on overall team scholarships by signing day, players leave in between then and the season starting. Because of that, I'd say teams actually having over 80 scholarship players when the season starts is far from a sure thing. We were at about 71 scholarship guys, and the teams we were playing were at probably closer to 78 than 85. -
Look at the caliber of prospects we've signed in the last 6 years https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/33678 https://rivals.com/content/prospects/30614 https://rivals.com/content/prospects/83520 http://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/73058/tony-mitchell http://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/170930/greg-wesley https://rivals.com/content/prospects/68803 http://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/187935/rickey-brice https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/20521 And transfers: https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/36358 https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/11075 If a coach can recruit, they'll end up landing some good prospects here.

Only downside is we'd be using a scholarship on him, presumably our last of the 2017 class, and having to use another spot in the 2018 class to replace him. Or counting him towards the 2018 class and having to replace him in the same class. With us already having 5 spots reserved in 2018 for blueshirts, roster management needs to be handled very carefully and precisely. -
Dillman didn't get to Guyer until spring 2014. This kid graduated in 2013.
