DRC: Chalk talk -- UNT at Georgetown
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Oh, that makes sense. ESPN shows the same game log numbers of 15 against OU and 21 against Eureka. I guess they use the total numbers from our official website but didn't update individual game numbers. -

Oh for sure. I'd do the same thing at this point. Just remember talking to Mark at a game and him saying he was expecting to start playing by the end of November. I think that could have changed things, but we're looking good without him like you said. Hoping he tears it up in practice and is starting at the 4 next year. -

JayD said he wasn't sure if one of our guards was still committed. Wondering if that is Carroll. Thought we were expecting Redfearn to sign. Nervous on Carroll right now. -

Thanks! Too bad it came so late. Could've really used him this year being so short-handed. Adding him, Gibson, and J Simmons plus whoever we add to fill Temara's spot is gonna make us really dangerous. -
Thanks!

When you say Chris Welch only has a track scholarship, does that mean the football team is not recruiting him at all? Because you can't be on scholarship through another sport and still play football.

Still no update on Tikhonenko? Also, I think you're using the points per game averages from ESPN.com. Not sure what happened, but those numbers got slightly off after the Mcneese State game, even though the game log numbers are correct for each individual game. Sports-reference gives the accurate numbers. For example, Smart is at 18.1, not 18.5 like ESPN shows https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/north-texas/2018.html -
Only played in 5 games this year before breaking his collarbone. Had back-to-back 100+ catch seasons in 2015 and 2016.

What's gonna make pulling this one out that much tougher is not having Tikhonenko, Gibson, and likely Duffy. For obvious reasons, but specifically for three-point shooting. Those are all guys who, when healthy, should average more than one made three per game. On Saturday night, we only made one three-pointer by someone other than Smart. Threes are a great equalizer when playing bigger teams, especially from top conferences. Luckily this group will be together for a while, but it's a shame we aren't closer to full strength for an opportunity like this.
-
I'll try and put something together. Not sure when, as I'm on vacation.

I'm interested to see how the young guys push the older guys this spring. Offensive line is an obvious position group where we need play to get better, and in year three you expect to start seeing some of this staff's high school signees getting on the field. In the first two years we haven't seen any of them, which isn't uncommon but if that position group is going to get better we need the young guys to be better than the older guys before them. Objectively speaking, the high school guys Littrell has signed have not been anymore highly recruited than the guys inherited from Mccarney, like Murray, Woodworth, and Barr. We'll see if they can evaluate and develop them well enough to improve the line in time.

Scholarship wise. And running back wise, not just FB who we don't really use -

Where are you seeing Singletary is 215-225? Listed at 200 and that's what he looks like, probably lighter at this stage in the season. Thats a difference in preference between us and Troy. I feel like we've had chances to get big backs in recruiting but haven't really pursued them very hard. -
Players are trained to say just that and think just that. Not surprising at all.

Right. And I never felt like we disagreed. I think there's confusion because I'm quoting to your posts while explaining why I disagree with the notion that we are "missing" a power back. But yeah, what you said -
I'm thinking redshirt year either way at this point. Although it would be really nice to have him given that we only made one three-pointer by someone not named Roosevelt Smart last night. Plus we only have one true stretch four right now, and that's what Mccasland plays so we could use another, so he could be groomed into that role to fill Temara's spot. We'll see, but timing wise not sure how likely it is that we'll see him this year regardless of the ruling.

One, if everyone with eligibility remaining returns next year. Temara is our only scholarship senior, so that is our open spot which has not been filled yet.

67 yards in 2 seasons here. He is a non factor until he proves otherwise -

My point is, if our coaches prefer speedy and shifty backs as you mentioned, I think it's a waste of a scholarship to get a big back for the primary purpose of being a goal-line/short-yardage back. And I certainly wouldn't expect it. If we find a big back who could be a productive every-down back for us, and we think he could fit our offense, great. But our coaches know having a big back isn't the only way to convert on short-yardage plays, and does not even necessarily improve our chances given our offense. -
Can we take a moment to appreciate this team?

That's what you took from his question? That you can't ask questions? -
Absolutely. I wasn't as confident we'd win this one as you were, but I definitely would've been shocked to see this one be anything but competitive until the last few minutes.

Smart is averaging 18.1 a game as a sophomore. Watson averaged 15.7 as a senior, and his next highest season average for his career was 11.3. If Smart keeps his average where it is at, he is in a class as a perimeter scorer at this stage in his career with Chris Davis and that's about it. At least as far back as I can see.
-
Right. As of now, San Diego is a more quality team than either of those squads.
