DRC breaking news: Lovelace family gives $2.5 million for IPF
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Thank you so much, Lovelace family! (I’m assuming they’ll read this) -
I’m sure I’m not the first person to throw this thought out there, but I feel like Ejiya could be the kind of player who could climb up draft charts fairly quickly. His size is absolutely in his favor at 6’3” 231 lbs, he is a tackling machine who already has two sacks following a 7 sack/12 TFL/100+ tackle season, and he was recruited originally to play rover and be sort of a linebacker/safety hybrid so he has the tools to be solid in coverage as well. Heading into our matchup against the only P5 school on our schedule, this is a huge opportunity for guys like Ejiya, Guyton, Bussey, Fine, etc to show scouts that they can produce against an SEC roster. Most scouts I have heard will, when evaluating non P5 prospects, pop on the film they have against P5 schools first for obvious reasons. Really hope they can pop.

The criticism is not that he didn’t offer Fine. It’s that he signed 9 QBs and not one of them stuck. He was 0-9 in terms of getting a legitimate FBS caliber starting QB, which is accentuated by the fact that Mccarney wouldn’t even give shorter QBs a legitimate look when those are often the best QBs available for G5 schools since the QBs who are tall and good get scooped up by P5s.
-
That’s interesting. McNulty did a pretty good job of getting the call to Carlos Harris, so it’s possible he would’ve done the same with Guyton and Bussey. But he also struggled completing passes more than 7 yards downfield some games.
-
Also ironic that all of those QBs were 6’1” or taller, and most were 6’3” and up. And that’s right in line with all of the QBs Mccarney offered. Mccarney wouldn’t even have given Fine a legitimate look for a scholarship offer because he didn’t pass the absolutely necessary height requirement
-
When you sign 9 QBs and the best one ends up being Andrew McNulty, that doesn’t put you in a great position to win FBS games. And there was no indication that things were getting better.
-
Whenever I look back at prior recruiting classes since I started following the program (2011), one thing that always stands out to me is all of the QBs we signed during the Mccarney era and how none of them really panned out. In Mccarney’s five recruiting classes (2011-2015) he signed nine players who were announced/started their career as QBs. They were Andrew McNulty, Brent Osborn, Cooper Jones, Brock Berglund, Dajon Williams, Josh Greer, Connor Means, Caleb Chumley, and Damarcus Smith. Here are the combined career stats for those 9 QBs: 5-20 W/L record in games started, 419/820 completions for 51%, 4588 yards passing, 5.6 yards/attempt, 27 TDs against 28 INTs Here are Mason Fine’s stats: 15-10 W/L record in games started, 544/862 completions for 63%, 6486 yards passing, 7.52 yards/attempt, 44 TDs against 21 INTs Mason Fine has single-handedly out produced the career numbers of nine QBs by almost 2000 yards and 17 TDs and he is possibly only about half way done with his NT career.

Back from when ULM beat them in 2012
-
Point was, if we win this game it won’t matter that Arkansas lost the week before
-
Just win baby, win. Good film against a P5 is always a plus for a G5 prospect
-
First QB in North Texas history to have back to back 400-yard passing games. Fine is now at 6,486 career yards passing. Fine is now 437 passing yards away from Scott Davis who is 4th in school history, 590 away from Steve Ramsey who is 3rd in school history for career passing yards, and 961 behind Derek Thompson for 2nd in school history. So the next time we see Mason play in Apogee, there’s a decent chance we see him move into 2nd place in school history for passing yards. Fine threw his 41st, 42nd, 43rd, and 44th career passing touchdowns tonight, which moved his past Scott Davis and Derek Thompson for 4th place in school history. Scott Hall is next at 50 career passing TDs. So to get to number one for career passing yards, Fine needs 2,034 more passing yards, and to get to number one for career passing TDs, Fine needs 26 more passing TDs.

SOS is pretty irrelevant for us, given that even if a G5 goes undefeated the CFP Committee still won’t give them any playoff consideration.

Start of something special Man of Steel
BillySee58 replied to Crazy Carl's topic in Mean Green Football
As long as he stays healthy, he is a lock to break school records for career passing yards and likely career passing touchdowns as well by the time this season is over. He is on track to be in a league of his own on the record books, and it will be absolutely earned. -

Kamehameha actually came first. The first street fighter game came out in 1987. Dragonball manga started in 1984, anime series started in 1986.- 18 replies

Putting the UNT 2018-19 Basketball Schedule Together
BillySee58 replied to Magic95Fan's topic in Mean Green Basketball
During the Italy tour Mccasland said they were hoping to have it finalized by the end of August, *checks the calendar* so you would think so. -
Fine also got a helmet sticker from Jesse Palmer. Unfortunately the helmet was the horrendous RV lid. But also a reminder that this is how you get people to know our program. Not by sticking our full name on the helmet.

With today’s performance, Fine passed Scott Hall to move in to 5th place in school history for career passing yards. He is also one touchdown pass shy of tying Scott Davis for 5th in school history, and just two back of tying Derek Thompson for 4th. His 444 passing yards today is also good for 5th most in a single game in school history. This broke his career high of 424 in a game that he set last year against SMU. Should be a fun year to watch and see what records Fine can break and when.

No disrespect to the Volleyball and Soccer teams, but this was the introduction to athletics for the 2018-2019 school year for the vast majority of UNT sports fans. And could it have gone any better, realistically? Attendance record while smoking one of our biggest rivals who looks down on us with a lot of recruits present including a current SMU commit visiting us. Football won 9 games and basketball won 20 last year. This could be the first year in school history where football hits double digit wins and basketball breaks 20. Not to mention Women’s basketball in a great spot to possibly push for 20 also, as well as other sports like soccer and volleyball. Year 3 of the Wren Baker era really looks like it’s shaping up to be a new golden era in UNT athletics. Should be a fun ride this year.

Two questions: 1. Why is a dude this talented playing JV? 2. Why is JV playing on Friday? Oh wait, you’re saying he put up these stats against a Varsity team?! 😦

DRC: Friday Q&A with Billy Embody of Pony Stampede
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree that SMU is deeper. They’ve recruited very well and our depth outside of receiver and nose tackle is underwhelming/unproven. Our backups at the other positions are primarily walkons and inexperienced players who haven’t really jumped scholarship players who are older than them on the depth chart. Like I’ve seen people say, Ben Hicks is not the most accurate QB and, outside of his connections with Courtland Sutton, he’s been pretty pedestrian against us. I’m really interested to see us get after him on third downs without Sutton or Quinn. Their running backs worry me a little, but I feel like our defense has defended the run well in the Littrell era. I think it’ll be close but I think we do get them. I think Guyton will look like the best player on the field. -
