I believe this is our first game against a top 25 opponent under Mccasland
-
I’d guess there’s no way he’s back. I wouldn’t expect him back anytime before the Utah State game

Gonna try and record a quick podcast. Would like to get it out before the VCU game. A little season preview stuff, a little more OCU game recap, a little VCU preview if it hasn’t already happened, and other stuff. So what do you guys have for me?

We are a week out from the fall signing period, which lasts from 11/13 to 11/20. I would expect Rubin Jones to sign, but will be interesting to see if anyone else joins. It has been pretty quiet on the recruiting front of late.

They’ve been calling traveling a lot more in the NBA this year as well. My guess is that’s why we saw it more/will see it more.
-
Offense is a mess right now. Passing up way too many decent and good lucks for the perfect shot which they aren’t getting. Getting more turnovers doing that than better looks. Spacing was also really bad, and not enough off-ball movement. We’re probably gonna get drilled by VCU but at the least we need to get something going offensively. I’m sure we’ll be a good defensive team again, just need to be more assertive and looking to shoot offensively.

Ben does still post here. He has a different username

It’s definitely not them

I think so. Dude was a big-time sleeper up until the end of his JUCO career. Had he done what he was doing earlier in his JUCO career and for a more prominent JUCO there’s a good chance he would’ve had legit high major interest, if not High major offers.

There is one basketball forum troll who always goes around unliking a bunch of posts. Not sure about the second one

With Siggers, Torrey, and Adaway at RB and Darden, Shorter, Simpson, Lyles, Kealon Jackson, and Loronzo Thompson at receiver I just want the best passer. So much skill talent, I just want the best guy at getting the ball in the hands of the playmakers. That’s why I lean more towards Aune. I’m starting to get behind Bean as well but I just don’t see above average accuracy or arm strength and I worry about turnovers. With all these playmakers if we can just keep the turnovers to a minimum they will take care of getting us plenty of yards and points.

Unfortunate to see that Abdul Mohamed has some sort of finger cast/splint on his right wrist/index finger. He was hurt last year at the beginning of the season and ended up taking a redshirt. Hope he can recover quickly.

Scout was acquired by 247 a few years back
-
Love it. If we do make a switch to a 4-3, this dude could have a chance to make an early impact
-
Gaddie’s redshirt is burned. Adaway has to play in 4 more games to burn his redshirt.

Darden’s season TD production has him tied for the third-most touchdown receptions in a single season by a North Texas player. 3 away from setting a single-season record. Also now 6th in school history for career TD receptions.

Western Michigan started 13-0 in 2016 off of primarily players who signed their out of high school. Pretty sure UCF’s recent run was similarly put together. Also, last time I checked I think about 13 to 14 of SMU’s starters this year signed there out of high school. It really isn’t that complicated. You get 25 scholarships every recruiting class. Sign about 17-22 high school kids a year, then use the rest on JUCO and D1 transfers depending on your team needs. A big reason we don’t have a great senior class this season is because we signed so many jucos and D1 transfers early on in he Littrell era. Signing guys like Alec Morris, Bryce English, Darius Turner, and Dee Baulkman in 2016 helped bolster our initial 2-deep, but in retrospect we sure could’ve used those spots at this point on solid high school o-linemen, d-linemen, secondary players, etc.

Especially if we move back to a 4-3 (or 4-2-5).

His twitter profile says he is a full qualifier. Which means he can come over to a D1 school as soon as he wants. 247 might list him as a 2021 recruit because he is a freshman, but my guess is they’re trying to bring him in this spring since he’s a full qualifier.

I don’t think any DC steps up and tries to override a coach on those type of offensive decisions. But the experience could come into play more throughout the week than being Seth’s decision-making consultant on Saturdays.

I think a lot of our worst hires over the years have been when we narrow our search to fit some predetermined criteria. Dodge saying if you can coach you can coach at any level and not doing due diligence to bring in a legit D1 D coordinator. Us making sure our next HC had HC experience at all costs and ending up with an old coach who was out of touch with modern day recruiting in Mccarney. Heck, even with Littrell (who has been good) we were dead set on getting the brightest offensive mind we could find and him not being a great recruiter has cost us with some lackluster classes creating an average group of upperclassmen by CUSA standards, in our record-breaking QBs senior season. Just saying that paying the most money and being a big boy is how you become a big boy is not necessarily the way to go. We need the right man for the job in 2020 and on, not necessarily the most qualified person who commands the most money. Having a big budget is nice, but it can be detrimental if we use it to narrow the search. Use it to broaden the search and don’t count out guys who are cheaper just because you can afford more.

That sounds wildly irresponsible, but cool I guess

Chizik and McNeill are likely well out of our price range. Probably the same for Gibbs. Not sure about Hoke, but please God not him.
-
Next year is going to be an integral year for the development of our future defense. We will have a lot of young talent between the 2018 through 2020 classes, particularly at linebacker and in the secondary. Implementing a defense with a good d coordinator and getting them could lead to a really solid defense when those players start to make up the upperclassmen of our defense.
-
My guess is Seth hires the best man for the job and lets him run whatever defense he wants. We have the personnel to run a 3 or 4 man front, and most offenses predicate either front to be able to run a good amount of nickel.
