Recruiting Philosophy on Commitments

Looks like he will be an early enrollee. Not sure if that was common knowledge or not. Our starting center was a senior and our backup center was a walkon. Gonna be an interesting position to follow in the spring.

Recruiting Philosophy on Commitments

Lot of cringe material there. Always thought that fans who liken de-committing to infidelity should probably step away from following recruiting. Comparing high school player commitments to marriage is... something. -

I have been wondering the same thing -
When Wilson was killing us in recruiting, so was everyone else. We were losing just about every recruiting battle we were in during the 2017 and 2018 recruiting cycles. Big test for us as we try and keep our recruiting momentum is can we overcome the negative recruiting from other staffs that will arise from 4-8 and Mason’s departure, and can we outrecruit the flash from guys like Traylor.
-
We are ranked 98th, and 4th in CUSA. Good start for us. As long as we keep improving the way we have since the start of the year, no reason we should drop off. https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-net-rankings

That hurts. He is 4 to play 3. We really a need a JUCO who we can bring in to play right away and who we can develop.
-
Now, for sure. Not looking forward to us having to face that hurdle. Good news is how well we have recruited the Houston area. That has to keep happening, especially now
-
I was responding to your post from back in February that you quoted, not a recent one. There was no reason to avoid recruiting that school at the time. At least for a solid G5 level recruit that wasn’t quite an Arkansas level prospect. Traylor pulling Ligon in now doesn’t prove your point from at that time. If he was at utsa when you made that post back in february, sure.
-
We would’ve been fine if Traylor were still at Arkansas
-
That was referencing basketball, where there is only D1, no FBS or FCS delineation.

Yes. Jeremy Combs did it last year with Texas Southern after being a grad transfer at LSU the year before. 3 years with us, 1 at LSU (which he ended up getting a redshirt for due to medical hardship), and 1 at Texas Southern.
-
Looking like grad transfer round 2 for him. Liberty Christian grad who we offered early on when Littrell got here.
-
I don’t think we recruited him at all. He signed with Tech right after Littrell was hired and had been committed to them for months. I know some on this board had suggested that we recruit him but I don’t think there was ever time or an opportunity to do so.
-
Or maybe he wants more of a guarantee than just a fair crack. Bowman has won out over him two years in a row under both of their last two coaching staffs. He probably wants more of a guarantee that he will be on the field his last year than risk backing up Bowman all year.

Last weekend before fall signing day this upcoming Wednesday. Bringing in a lot of the commits.

Take Weaver blueshirting off the table

I’m not saying 3-3-5 can’t work. Like you said, it has. I just think at a G5 school it is easier to recruit to a 4-3. The linebackers you can get are usually smaller, so having 4 down linemen to keep the o-linemen off them makes sense. It’s hard to get a true quality nose tackle to a G5, and we really just have one in Novil but you could argue even he would shine more as a 4-3 DT. And I think the same for DE over a JACK linebacker. Guys who are big and athletic enough to thrive at that JACK position usually have plenty of P5 choices. And in 4 years we’ve only really seen 2 guys we recruited play that position in Wheeler and Ozougwu, who we brought in both right off the bat. Since then we haven’t been able to bring any new recruits to play that position to a level the coaches trust.

Who is your all-time favorite NT basketball player?
BillySee58 replied to 97and03's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I hate that he got Benford’d, but definitely Tony Mitchell for me. His freshman season was my freshman year, and that was an amazing student basketball experience watching him dunk on dudes then swat their shot into the stands. -
Sure, but given that our linebackers are smaller, and probably will continue to be at the G5 level, having four down linemen helps keep the offensive line off of our linebackers. That was a huge problem this year.
-
And that’s the logic of why we have been a 3-3-5 under Littrell to this point. Our best defense in this conference was a 4-3 defense back in 2013. If you compare the passing offenses in our conference to the entire country, a few of the top teams in our conference ranked fairly high but overall our conference was not filled with passing offenses in the top half of the country. Plus, USM and La Tech were two of the top passing offenses in the conference and 23rd and 31st in the country respectively. And our scheme didn’t help at all with the personnel we were putting out there.
