QB Amani Gilmore, KY transfer, commits
BillySee58 replied to untcampbell's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
A theory was mentioned to me that the coaches may have touted Bean as the backup last year even when Aune outplayed him in camp to ensure both would still be here for the 2020 season since Aune already has a house here and is much less likely to transfer. If this theory had merit, you would have them battle it out through fall camp, announce Aune as the starter right before the first game and have Bean be his backup, then probably see Bean transfer after the season with maybe Martin and Kuehne choosing to do the same over backing up Aune for two more years. In that scenario, plus not signing a 2020 HS QB, we’d possibly be down to just Aune and Drummond as our only scholarship QBs heading into the 2021 season. Having Gilmore on the roster after his redshirt would be huge in that scenario. I get that’s a lot of conjecture, but the risk of transfers is pretty similar if Bean wins the job. I think this move is made with this risk very much in mind. -
‘20 JUCO DT Aurion Peoples (College of the Canyons)
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I don’t know. We seem to sign a guy over the summer most years (Eric Jenkins, Kemon Hall, Asher Frow, etc.) and technically there is a spring signing period but those guys have been signed after it ended and there didn’t seem to be an issue timing wise. -
6’3” 290 lb defensive tackle from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California. His highlights show 2018 as his freshman season but not sure about what happened in 2019. Not 100% sure this is a 2020 offer but JUCO Frenzy lists him as one and he retweeted it. I believe we still have two spots left for the 2020 class. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/6225777/5bb79c71b0232515ac9ffee2

Review our last 3 years in football and basketball. We are 5 games over .500 in football with a division title and have won 20 straight games each of those years in basketball including coming off of a conference championship, which you can’t just gloss over even in your narrative (devil’s advocate?) that we don’t bring enough to the table. Plus we’re coming off signing some of the top recruiting classes in the conference in each. Stats and data ranges can easily be manipulated to fit a narrative, but under the current administration and head coaches for football and basketball, we have made ourselves much more competitive and attractive. We need to get rid of this RV mindset he seemed to plant in our fanbases’ heads that things under him were as good as they could be at UNT and any shortcomings we had from 2001-2015 were just because it’s hard at UNT. We all know that isn’t going to be any sort of deciding factor in this type of decision. We’re discussing a hypothetical in which the California football programs are incapable of fielding football teams this season, and us hopping in on that opportunity to fill those slots in their schedule. Probably not realistic but that wasn’t the point of discussing if we should try and jump on that opportunity like MeanGreenTexan asked. No disagreements on that. But also don’t think being in the MWC precludes us from making those type of moves if that scenario were to transpire.

The Mountain West is one of the most spaced out conferences in the country. Not like the other teams in our conference are driving distance from each other for large numbers of opposing fans to go to each game. University of Nevada is about a 15 hour drive to Albuquerque and Laramie. Denton is closer to University of Wyoming, UNM, Air Force, and Colorado State than those California schools are. We aren’t less appealing geographically than other options, even from a fan travel standpoint. As far as what we offer, we have a football program that should be competitive in this conference on paper and a really strong basketball program to add to a really strong basketball conference. We can be that strong basketball add that NMSU would be, while being a far more appealing option from a football standpoint.

Definitely. Hard to imagine we’d be able to get out of our scheduling commitments for the year.

'21 OLB Offer: Willie Simmons; Elgin: [SIGNED LOI]
BillySee58 replied to UNTLifer's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Has picked up offers from Missouri State, New Mexico, and Air Force since committing to us. Hopefully this is a similar case to Jacobi Johnson where we get him early on then hold onto him if/when bigger schools start snooping around. -
Jayden Jones: LB Parish Episcopal: 3 star - .8416

UNT at Wichita St rumored
BillySee58 replied to NorthTexasSportsNetwork's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Sure hope so because SMU was able to get a home and home with them -
It’s gonna come down to how ready he is to defend this year, but offensively I think he’s one of our best weapons from day one.

‘22 QB Garret Rangel - Frisco Lone Star
BillySee58 replied to 97and03's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
It was when we were talking about Chandler Galban. Galban had about 6 FBS offers then transferred in from the Houston area and Rangel beat him out as a sophomore. -
UNT at Wichita St rumored

Looks pretty safe to assume we’re going to have a similarly tough schedule this year. Only question is can we get a solid non-conference opponent into The Super Pit? Also, Wichita State has had a lot of turnover this offseason. A lot of players have transferred out. Going to be interesting to see how good they are going to be and how quickly they will be able to get there. -

I don’t think he’s a take for us. Him putting our hat on the table doesn’t mean our offer still is. -

With the caliber of recruits we have been signing, I hope not. Let Simmons’ eligibility run out and replace him with the same caliber recruit as we have been getting. -
Position Group Breakdowns: Tight Ends
BillySee58 replied to Coach Andy Mac's topic in Mean Green Football
I don’t know that he has bulked up for blocking. He has been listed at 6’2” 220 since the season. I highly doubt we see him in-line blocking. I think any bulking up would probably be natural growth more than forced. I think it is a shift towards using tight ends more. This, plus signing two tight ends last class and offering more in 2021. It tells me that they want to move towards having a bigger pass catcher at the Y rather than having two little slot receivers on the field together at the A and Y. That’s the look I expect going forward. Two outside receivers at the X and Z, one traditional slot receiver at the A, one big receiving threat/pass-catching tight end type at the Y, and a running back. I know your concern is depth at receiver, particularly long-term. But if they have decided to shift more towards having these tight-end/bigger bodies at the Y, now you only have three “wide receivers” spots so less players needed to fill out a 2 and 3-deep there. -
Position Group Breakdowns: Tight Ends
BillySee58 replied to Coach Andy Mac's topic in Mean Green Football
Last year our starting Y was Michael Lawrence, with Kelvin Smith supposed to be starting there and playing more there before the injuries hit. That Y spot can be a second inside receiver or a tight end, so with both of those guys gone I think this is essentially moving Lyles to that Y spot, moreso than moving him from receiver to tight end. -
Defending Champions Sign Top Recruiting Class
BillySee58 replied to MCMLXXX's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Jones wasn’t top 150 on Rivals, and Mitchell did not count towards our 2011 class because he was a 2010 recruit. Can’t speak towards other publications but Rivals doesn’t seem to have the 2011 class rankings archived, but I think it might not have been top 50 because Mitchell did not count towards the 2011 class. -
2021 HS G - Brandon Murray - IMG Academy

Murray reclassified to class of 2021 and will attend IMG Academy for his season of prep school -
Right, an on-ball specialist who was used in those specific instances rather than consistent minutes carved out of the rotation. Which if that’s how Mccasland used his on-ball specialist last year, I think that’s how he’ll be used again until some material improvements are made to his shot. I don’t know but if we still can’t have sports come November than we have bigger issues to worry about.
-
The problem I see with Jackson is that his shot has such a far way to come. Larry Wise did not hit enough shots early when he was getting minutes to earn a rotation spot, but his shot isn’t broken. But with Jackson teams gave him zero respect beyond the arc. 0-3 from three in 134 minutes on the season. When you’re that much of a non-threat as a shooter under 6’ tall, that’s why he was only able to come in for small spurts at a time. He was just too much of a non-factor offensively. I just have a hard time penciling him in for more minutes knowing how far away his shot was. Something that I’m going to have to see first.

Last year as we got into our set rotation in conference play, Jahmiah only saw minutes due to foul trouble. I think that’s where he is at best next season. Especially once Robinson and Ousmane get some experience. I think we our starting lineup is Hamlet, McBride, Reese, Bell, and Zach Simmons with Rubin Jones being our first guard off the bench and Lewis being our first big off the bench. Jones can come in for any of our three guards because he is one of our best three-point shooters and one of our best offensive creators, plus he’s 6’3”/6’4”. Lewis, similar to Deng Geu, will probably play the 4 and the 5, although Ousmane could eat some of those minutes at the 5. I think Zach, Bell, and Lewis will probably play about 70 minutes combined at the 4/5 each game, leaving about 10 minutes for Ousmane and Robinson there. I think Robinson is our 8th guy. He will probably play a lot of 4 in his career here but this season I think he’ll play a lot at the 3. I think Robinson will see a lot of his playing time coming when Reese or Bell is off the court. I don’t think Mccasland wants Reese at the 2 and Robinson at the 3 together because that gives you just one offensive creator/ballhandler and Mccasland likes to have 2 on the court at any given time, and if Bell is out Robinson is your only other option for a shooting 4 to help spread out the spacing. Then after those 9 I mentioned I think Jackson and Wise compete for any remaining guard minutes, and Jahmiah and Alcindor probably only play in blowouts. That’s the way I would expect it to play out at this moment but there’s so much time for change and hopefully the last 4 guys I mentioned come back much improved this season.
-
Maybe so. I just think Mccasland prioritizes skill and spacing on the court over size and I don’t think this pickup is contradictory to that.
