It seems like the influx of JUCOS in the last couple of years did some of the damage, but there had to be a lot of players that just left the program as well to put us in this mess. I am going to try to put some scholarship related data together for DD vs TD vs DM.

So as long as he does not take a snap this year, he will still have one year of eligibility left. Right? If this is his plan, don't know if it is possible that he graduates in December, but if he does he can enroll somewhere in time for Spring practice. Regardless, wish him well.

A couple more tidbits from game notes. Y'Barbo is listed as starting center. Fortenberry not listed on depth chart. Injured/suspended/typo? Feeley listed at LG in Y'Barbo's spot. Carlos Harris is listed as starting WR in Brelan's spot. Jeremy Brown is listed as KR. Carlos Harris is listed as PR.

A trick play is executing a play that the opponent does not expect. Therefore, calling the same play 3 times in a row technically falls under the definition of trick play.

Thankfully, we have already had a little practice against up tempo teams in Houston, ULL, and MT. We know what we need to do. The MG Brigade will perform a full show prior to the game and when the team comes out of the locker room for opening kickoff, all scoreboards will show that it is the 3rd quarter.

Looks a lot like Fouts. Complete with aluminum horseshoe. I think the concrete bleachers you see are the only thing left after recent renovation. Press box and rest of seating are new(mid/late 90's). -
At some of the top programs their lineups have plenty of players that are in their 3/4/5 year out of high school. I have never really seen the problem with using JUCOs to fill in the gaps when the HS recruits don't develop or you need to fill an immediate need. A JUCO transfer has up to three years with your program (see Bynes) so there is time to get value. Everything in moderation.

I hope we eventually get to the point that our O-line and D-line and maybe even LBs are all redshirt juniors and/or 5th year seniors. These guys could use another 20-30 pounds of mass across the board. That takes time in the weight room. Visually, our guys look small in comparison. One of my guests at the ULL game even made the comment that our defense looked like the size of a high school team. I wouldn't go that far, but the size difference is noticeable in many areas. We are not typically able to recruit the players out of HS that already have the size so they need all the time they can get in the weight room. On the surface, it seems like Coach Mac is trying to redshirt when possible. Let's just hope it's not just about lack of ability. Skill/speed players are not always just about size so their situations can be a little different.

Scholarship allotment issue - what the what?
CurveItAround replied to Stan R's topic in Mean Green Football
The ESPN site shows slightly different numbers than Rivals. The ESPN site shows 25 signees in 2012 and 24 signees in 2011. http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/school/_/id/249/class/2012/sort/player/order/true Since we already signed 25 players for 2012, I assume the transfers like Pegram, Terrell, Berglund, etc... are all having to pay their own way this season and we can put them on scholarship later (possibly as early as the Spring semester?). If anyone has any insight, please share. As an example, Trice transferred in 2011, but he shows up as one of our 2012 signees. -
There are 15 seniors on the roster, but I guess he is referring to the 11 on the 2 deep. There are 7 seniors that are listed as starters. If you assume they are on scholarship, we should be able to get back to 85 scholarship players with next year's class. If we are at 74 currenlty and lose 7 to graduation we will be at 67. We will be able to add 18 (plus any additional scholarship players that leave) to get us to the full complement of 85.

Caldwell transferred from Kansas Wesleyan, a NAIA school. I was under the impression that players were not required to sit out when tranferring. Maybe this is a coach's decision to preserve a year of eligibility until next year?

Why is everyone so down?

Meh. No reason to be hatin on UTSA. They happened to be in the right place at the right time. They are a shiny new toy right now in an area that has not had something previously. Good for them. It is too bad it took this long, but we finally find ourselves in a conference with 3 other Texas schools. We will receive additional conference games against schools with better name recognition than our current conference. Plus we have an upcoming series with smoo and a service academy. We could potentially add another local series with TxSt if we want. We have finally made a financial commitment to be able to attract and retain a quality coaching staff, regardless of whether or not you think the current staff is the right one. Recruiting seems to be heading in the right direction and should only continue to improve with our upcoming CUSA schedule and in state competition. The positives are everywhere for those willing to look. -
Scholarship allotment issue - what the what?

I looked at the roster and it looks like we have the following transfers on the roster. Year listed is the first year they showed up on roster. I don't have a way of knowing which transfers are receiving a scholarship. 2011 - Trice (OU) 2011 - Feldt (Arkansas) 2012 - Pegram (Purdue) 2012 - Terrell (Texas) 2012 - Chelf (Iowa) 2012 - Caldwell (Kansas Wesleyan) 2012 - Hubbard (NE Ok St) 2012 - Igboeli (Tx Southern) 2012 - Brown (Miami, Oh) -

I did some follow on resarch for the last 5 recruiting classes that signed NLI's with North Texas (per Rivals). 2008 - 26 signed NLI, 3 still on roster (i.e. 5th year seniors). *sigh* 2009 - 20 signed NLI, 5 still on roster 2010 - 22 signed NLI, 12 still on roster 2011 - 21 signed NLI, 18 still on roster (counts Stojkovic) 2012 - 21 signed NLI, 21 still on roster Based on this information, we have 59 players still on the roster that originally signed a NLI (received scholarship). I don't have a way of knowing how many players on the current roster that were previously walkons that have earned a scholarship, or transfers that received a scholarship. -
Scholarship allotment issue - what the what?

I went and looked this up on the NCAA site: http://web1.ncaa.org.../aprRelease.jsp and searched for University of North Texas. The results showed that: 2006-2007 academic year UNT football had an APR of 917 which resulted in an immediate scholarship reduction of 5. 2007 - 2008 academic year UNT football had an APR of 911 which resulted in an immediate scholarship reduction of 6 (based on the footnote, it looks like the previous year penalty was waivered, but when we failed to bring the APR up, we received the orginal penalty of 5 plus an extra one). Based on my interpretation (please correct me if I am wrong), this would have limited us to 79 total scholarships for the 2008 season and would have impacted the potential number of new scholarships we could award in 2008. However, when you look at the Rivals site, http://rivals.yahoo..../northtexas-182, it shows that we signed 26 new players to a national letter of intent (which by definition means we awarded 26 new full shcolarships). If we were on a scholarship reduction to a total of 79 for the 2008 season, we must have already been way under previously if we were able to sign 26 new players. I could be misinterpreting how the penatly works, but it does not appear that we have received any new penalties due to APR since 2007-2008 academic year so I don't guess I understand some people's comments about how we are still feeling the effects of the scholarship reduction. -

FBS schools can only have a maximum of 85 scholarship players at one time. You can't sign 25 every year. -
There is a lot of complaining about Thompson

Is it the QB that makes the WRs or the WRs that make the QB? Hard to say which it is, but pretty easy to spot when it is neither. -
There is some truth to having to learn how to win, and that includes how to react/prepare when coming off a win.

I don't really think there is any way around it, they (players AND coaches) sucked it up today and got their butts handed to them. They should be embarrassed and I am sure they are. Unfortunately, it happens occasionally. However, I do feel things overall have improved and are still improving. I would prefer to be able to point at W's to show that improvement. In their absense, it will have to rely more on more subjective measures. I am still a believer, and don't see that changing this year or next, unless we start stacking together performances like today.

A history of it being acceptable to lose and try your best is a large reason we have a history of losing. Building a winning program isn't easy and it unfortunately takes time or else everyone would do it.

North Texas NCAA Ranking Summary thru 10/20/12
CurveItAround replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
With all the fanfare that Chancellor got for returning kicks last year, he was pretty much non existant on punt returns in 2011 also. I can't believe we don't have a RB or DB that is capable of taking on the punt returning duties and be willing to keep the ball from hitting the turf. -

The team is undefeated when scoring 30+, but they are also 7-2 under Coach Mac when scoring 22+. -
It also kind of implies we can't pin our ears back and move the pile when we want to. Kind of surprising, but would explain why the play calling has looked conservative. Reality is that we are not winning the battle at the line often enough on the short yardage situations. It seems that the coaches have been taking notice because it feels like they have been calling a few more screen and play action passes in these situations.

For clarity, when a team goes to a post season bowl, the money that is earned from that bowl goes to the conference and then all the teams split all the bowl money earned by the conference. The more teams that go to a bowl, the more everybody makes, and vice versa. So when the non power 5 conferences are not given the opportunity to qualify for the big bowls, it really is about the money. When one team from a non power 5 conference makes a BCS bowl and earns $14mm for the conference, and the conference TV deal is $1mm per school, it is a windfall for the teams in the conference.
