Tony Benford contract details from Vito
CurveItAround replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Interesting. I can't believe someone hasn't snatched him up. It seems like only a decade ago he was still coaching. I bet he would be bad ass at recruiting. -

On a 3 out 2 in motion offense, remind me which one is the center and which one is the forward again? They keep switching spots and ending up at similar spots on the floor so much, I am having trouble telling them apart. -

I am too lazy to go look it up. When we chose to not hire Fraschilla, which program did he wind up at? -

Of course it would be very detrimental to the program for many years to come. More than any of us would ever really know, which is why sitting at 3-5, as paiful as it is, makes little sense. -

And all the frustrating inconsistent play that included losses to teams we had no business losing to by Jones coached teams? It happens to everyone. Jones did good things here. Not taking that away, but he left on his own. Benford has stuff to learn that can only be learned by being the man. No question he will make some mistakes. As he said tonight, our defense must improve and our perimeter defenders have to stop playing Michael Finley swinging gate style defense. And we have to improve on 279th ranked shooting percentage. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink (or make a basket evidently). We are starting to get enough tape of these guys playing together to start showing them how freaking horrible they have been and how out of position they frequently are. If our 3 prima donnas played with half as much heart as Roger Franklin, this would be a moot point. If Benford's first recruiting class (so far) is any indication of the type of talent he can bring in here, we will be just fine, regardless of how this season turns out. Unlike many on here who have already jumped off, I happen to think we can still do good things this year. -

Why doesn't Benford just tell our players to make their shots? I guess we can just chalk it up to more poor coaching. Please ignore the 1-4 start that Coach Jones started November with last season, that included a 33 point loss to UTA. Also, forget the fact that Coach Jones lost both games to ULL during conference play, because he is obviously 10 times the coach that Benford ever will be.- 106 replies

Based on the area of the helmet that logos normally go, the SOW is kind of ill shaped unless you shrink it way down, rotate it, or create some sort of abstract version. Not an easy soution, although I would have 0 problem with the oversized interlocking NT proposed previously. It seems to meet the AD's requirements about promoting North Texas, no SOW, no UNT, updated design with retro feel, etc... We should start a petition to see how much support it could get. Could create a page on GMG that displays the new option(s) along with the existing unis and let people vote on favorites. Notify the students and have them come to the site and vote or sign petition, etc... It would be good way to make more students aware of GMG/drive more traffic and at the same time maybe catch the attention of the AD office. Just a thought.

I have a real good feeling that if this were to have somehow happened to North Texas, this board would have been sympathetic and understood the tough position that RV was in...

I believe the number 6 that is referenced comes from HS recruits that are still on the roster. Mac referenced 13 scholarship seniors that he would be losing and I thought one of the press conferences indicated 17 total, but going from memory on the total number.

Things he has done: 1) Convinced Tony Mitchell to stay 2) Kept Chris Jones from transferring 3) Signed Greg Wesley 4) Signed Josh Friar 5) Signed Tony Nunn 6) Signed PJ Hardwicke 7) Signed TJ Taylor 8) Retained experienced assistant coaching staff 9) Inflicted serious pain on scorekeeper's 'buzzer finger' I don't disagree that the team has underperformed compared to their perceived ability to this point. Ultimately, that responsibility will lay at the coach's feet if it is not resolved. However I do disagree that he has done anything to warrant the knee jerk 'fire him now' reaction. That would do way more harm than good to the program. If this team plays just a little defense, they more than likely win UAH, UTA, and ULL games. Giving up 70+ points to those three teams, inexcusable lack of defensive effort by the guys on the court.
-
Defense, or lack thereof, cost us the UAH game and ULL game. Players are the ones playing defense, but it is coach's responsibility to ensure that the players on the court are playing D. The team showed that it can score enough points to win when it shoots well, but some of our key players have not committed themselves on the defensive end. You can either blame the players, or blame the coach for allowing them on the court, but defense has already cost us 2 games. We can have off shooting nights, but defense is just about hustle. It is Coach Benford's job to get the current core players to buy in defensively, or find change the core. We have proven already that we don't have a lot of shooters on this team. We will likely lose on nights we don't shoot well. We will certainly lose if we continue to allow teams to score 70+ points every night.

It shows that while we can't graduate people who can spell, at least one can add.

For those that picked up on Benfords substitution pattern during the early part of the season, and now seem to continue to parrot how he is subbing too much, including the last game, help me understand this Outside of our top 6 players, who all played 20 minutes or more, Holmen played 10 minutes, Niko 3, Coleman 6, Hardwick 6, Overlander 1. How is it possible to have all the substitutions occurring that most on here claim, yet only 6 players played any significant minutes?
-
It certainly couldn't be bad playering'ing. My gosh, there are only 5 players on the floor at a time. Even if his teammates don't want to play nice with Tony, they suck so bad at shooting, a player with his supposed ability could still easily average a double double if he really wanted to.
-
This is about respect. The players don't like what they are being asked to do, so they are acting like babies. They would not get away with this at other programs. The inmates cannot run the asylum, no matter how talented they are. This part is due to lack of coaching experience. As an assistant and recruiter, he can be their buddy. Not as the HC. Benford has a job to do and that is to be the coach, not their friend. He has given some players too long to get on board. He is ultimately going to lose his job if he does not produce in the win/loss column. He should at least go down fighting by playing the players that are willing to work within the system and play D, no matter who that means he has to sit. As a coach, you have one thing you can control, and that is playing time. If you aren't willing to play D, you sit. Period.

Didn't catch much of Teegarden as a QB. Was he meh? Nice numbers coming out of Odessa. Undersized, overachieving, and very mobile. Seems like perfect QB for mid-major, but was immediately moved when new staff came in. Not suggesting he be moved back that this point, but thoughts on what Teegarden brought to the table?
-
If he looked at us and wasn't confident he was an improvement, and our coaches couldn't commit to a likely staring role, probably better to offer a HS player.
-
It isn't that the cupboard is/was bare. There is ample talent. The problem (IMO) is that we have some whiny little bitches for players right now that are refusing to play together as a team. I agree that it is ultimately Coach Benford's responsibility to either get it resolved or put someone else in to do the job. I'm not convinced that Tony and CJ/Jordan need to spend a lot of time on the floor at the same time for most of the game. Our most gifted athletes may not work best when they are all on the floor at the same time because they most certain don't appear to want to work together. If keeping these little girls separated doesn't work, amputation might be next.
-
I just want to see the team start getting a shot off before the shot clock hits 25. If we are only going to shoot 20% on our good nights, then we need to shoot a higher volume.

Is tomorrow a two-fer double header?

Two kicks in the nuts for the price of one? Fantabulous. -
Dare we dream that we could actually put some money packages on the field next season in passing situations?

As good as Orr played this year, and he played great. Is his size better suited for the outside? It seems pretty reasonable that our rush defense was below average because we frequently had an undersized Boutwell playing DT along with an undersized middle linebacker. He would make the tackle, but if he (or someone) was playing at 245-260 in the middle, it might make some difference in the run game. The Houston game was a real eye opener for me when their RB seemed to be able to get 4-6 yds per carry anytime he ran right of the middle. Not sure what someone like Orr would be like on the outside, but I think he would be great anywhere, and playing the outside might allow him more chances to blitz. I have wondered if any of our DE's could make the transition to MLB and provide size (as well as ability). It just seems that we were playing a few positions on defense undersized last season.
