If they magically find a QB then it might be a difficult game for us, but until that point we got a chance. Its a long ways away. There will be a whole offseason to worry about that.
-
I think they will let him coach the bowl game anything else looks like they fired him which is probably what went down behind the scenes. They just want to let him leave in on respectable terms.

Looks like our first opponent will have a new coach next year. Mack Brown is stepping down as UT's coach. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/texas-longhorns/20131210-report-mack-brown-will-step-down-as-texas-longhorns-coach.ece

I don't recall Rice running a pro style offense. Maybe Charlie is switching to the read option offense with QB Montell Cozart and thus needed a decent play caller.

Both. I think both Mac and Chico feel comfortable with the 5 guys that they got in Chancellor, Smith, Harris, Terrell, and Kidsy to put them on the field all at the same time. Again its going to be dictated by situation, but I don't think there is any reason to doubt that they wont use that set if they need to. Next year you have 3 of that 5 returning and a host of guys who are verbally committed that look like they can step in right away and contribute. You have to think out of Goree, Ivery, Davis, and Adams that at least two of those guys will see playing time. Also it wouldn't surprise me to see Marcus Smith get some looks in those situations. If he can continue to develop his pass catching abilities he could become a match-up nightmare for defenses. Imagine him vs. a LB in 5 spread set.

For those interested here on some thoughts from last night game against BYU. North Texas was beat by a far superior TEAM tonight plain and simple. BYU is a well coached well disciplined team and they showed it. There is no shame in losing to a team like that; you just wish UNT could have put together a solid two halves instead of just one UNT was able to hang with BYU for the first 20 minutes, by attacking the rim and knocking down some open shots. They weren’t really ever able to slow down BYU offense. The Cougars made adjustments to their defense in the middle of the first half and it started to show as they built up a 7 point lead. Sorry didn't mean to confuse you guys here is our pass percentages in different situations on second down. Also this only up until UTSA scored to make it 21-6 because after that it was pretty much all passing. Yards 4-6 Pass -> 67% Yards 7-9 Pass ->75% Yards 10+ Pass -> 86% What it was before the UTSA game: Yards 4-6 Pass -> 37% Yards 7-9 Pass -> 46% Yards 10+ Pass -> 63%
-
We didn't run the ball any more on first down than we have all year. Our ratio stayed at 65% run 35% pass for the UTSA game. I agree Coach Canales didn't call his best game and I thought he got away from the run on second down too much. We were really heavy on pass percentage in 2nd and 4+ yards to go. Poor executed pass plays turned things into 3rd and longs where we were stuck passing again. It was a day where I thought UNT needed to grind it out and stay patient. I thought we got caught trying to match their passing game. It was just bad all around, poor execution and poor play calling. Against Tulsa I thought Coach C called a really nice game from the start. He bounced back. I'm interested to see how we handle this time off in prep for our bowl opponent. After both bye weeks this year we have come out really flat.

Former USC Coach Orgeron applies for FAU gig
Mean_Green09 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
They'd be crazy not to offer him that gig. He'd be very successful there. -
In the second half against Ball St. we ran the ball 65% of the time. We just wore their defense down.
-
I looked at what we did up until they scored to make it 21-6. We ran it 43% to 57% pass. Our average for the year is 56% run to 44% pass. We had a better YPC average against UTSA then we did against Rice. My belief is that had we stayed patient and stuck with the run game like we have all year we would have grinded out a win.
-
They wont announce until next week Monday.
-
It's simple he doesn't catch the ball. I bet if he cures his case of the dropsies he would be targeted more. I will say this though he would always be my first guy off the bus. Dude just looks like a supreme athlete. I hope he is able to put it all together next year. He could be a part of an explosive offense.

The Curious Case of Connor Means: Why UNT offered
Mean_Green09 replied to MeanGreenZen's topic in Mean Green Football
Recruiting QBs is never an extact science. Here's the thing never get caught with just bringing in one with each class. I think that's how programs get in trouble, by putting all their faith in one guy. Especially if that guy commits to them before his SR season. The SR season is critical in evaluating potential recruits. UT got themselves in trouble by offering guys early and not evaluating all their potential prospects for a SR season. I think a kid like Means is getting recruiting based on how he projects to develop at the next level. Canales and Mac believe he has the basic tools to be successful in the offense. Believe it or not, but not all kids are recruited based on production. Fans get caught up on production and a kids numbers. They don't look at it like a coach does. -
The Curious Case of Connor Means: Why UNT offered
Mean_Green09 replied to MeanGreenZen's topic in Mean Green Football
I watched Drew a lot in high school. He had better tools than Means. I'm not quite sure I've ever seen a QB with the arm strength and accuracy that Drew possed. In response to him dropping the elbow. One way guys like Rivers over come that is with great release time. Phillip Rivers probably has the quickest release time in the NFL. -
I don't discount anything you've said. It's all a valid argument. Again I can live with that. I think we disagree on a few things. No harm I think we agree on the future at QB should be bright whoever it pans out to be.
-
I know your not. It's a fan board so I understand. Trust when I say that I know where your coming from. I understand the best thing to do is to wait and see bc you never know. I may be wrong and I can live with that. It's hard to be right on things like this. I just know what I was taught about QBs and assessing them. That's the reason I'm sticking by my statement of Dajon being the most accurate. Also the statement on the podcast was directed at people complaining. I know people have valid opinions on why we lost and some of those people might have not been able to make it. I just was tired of seeing the complaining.
-
Thanks for pointing out my blanket statements.
-
I don't care you think it's dumb. I stand by my thoughts. I stand by my beliefs. I put more value in Dajons tape in part bc of the competition he has faced and the coaching received. I also trust what I see in the film. Dajon is the better player. I don't care where he was ranked on rivals or 24/7. Texas high school QBs are far better developed than QBs from other states. Look how many starters there are in the NFL or other NCAA teams, who played high school football in Texas.
-
I don't think it's a basis. I think it's the truth. QBs that have gone through a texas high school system tend to be better than QBs from other states. I know the competition is tougher here in Texas than in CO. I think the coaching is better to. I'm not saying Brock is bad bc he is at UNT. I'm saying that if he had the talent that scouts thought he had he wouldn't have bounced around like he did. It wasn't like he transferred out of an aq school to a juco and then blew it up. He hasn't played in forever and there is a reason why. All the Brock guys you can take him. I will take Dajon and go win conference championships
-
If he cant run the run the offense he is not the best QB. It's not a complicated offense. If your a QB and cant read the defense then your not the best QB. Dajon has more upside than Brock in all categories in my book. Derek was the right QB for this team this year. The other choices simply weren't good enough at the time.
-
Yeah I tend to be bold. I trust what I see. I also trust a QB from Texas who played in the upper divisions (4A) over a kid from Colorado. I think the competition is greater and the development of QB's is better in high school here in Texas more so than everywhere else. Brock may have some talent, but I have my doubts about him. If he had the ability that everyone projected him to have he wouldn't have ended up here at UNT. He would have at least been a back somewhere else. Not a 3rd or 4th string guy at UNT.
-
I base my decision on every game, and warm-up I've seen. I've seen him play both in high school and college. Film don't lie. Go back and watch his recruiting tape if you want to. 90% of his passes hit the WR in stride. They aren't having to slow down or dive for something. He gets the ball to the WR's hands when under pressure too, which is probably the most important thing. His delivery is solid and confident. His footwork is more consistent than DT to. You don't see the back foot problem. The kid has the skills to really stretch the field vertically. He didn't get to throw a lot in a run based offense, but when he did he was efficient and effective. I believe he has the tools to be a really good QB for UNT. Was he ready to take the job this year probably not. He needed some time to develop his strength, arm and body. I see him behind a really good OL having a terrific year. This offense next year has a chance to be really good with his skill set.
