Where we go from here with DW at QB
Mean_Green09 replied to untjim1995's topic in Mean Green Football
They don't have the QB that La Tech has and they have to go play at Ruston. So La Tech is my favorite right now, they are the most complete team. I'm not trying to have a knee jerk reaction. The way the schedule sets up, it would be extremely difficult for us to win CUSA W. Especially after losing the most important game of our season. Now we have to take tough road trips to UTSA, Rice and UTEP with a RS FR. Its pretty clear to me that we are 4th in the race. Games still have to be played and things may change with a new QB, but right now we aren't in the race. We don't really know much about this team yet. We were 2-1 to start last season. Yes we lost our conf opener, but it was a road game. Tough to rebound from a home loss against division champ contender. -
Where we go from here with DW at QB

I don't expect us to finish 2 or 3rd in the west. We will be battling UTEP for 4th place and a bowl birth. The conference west race is down to La. Tech, Rice, and UTSA. La Tech is in the drivers seat with Rice and UTSA both traveling to Ruston. We could play a spoiler roll in late November vs. UTSA -
Dajon is not BJ Daniel. Not the same body type. BJ was like a RB playing QB. Dajon wouldn't survive 175 carries. All Dajon has to do is complete passes and this offense will function nicely. Maybe 4 or 5 called runs a game. Also I hope Dajon can complete over 60% of his passes
-
We dont have to change much in the way of play calling. Chico will call a few more plays suited towards Dajon. The biggest thing this offense needed was a guy who could complete a pass. I think we've got that now. Plus we got a guy who can make D's think about his running ability.
-
I'll agree he is better than the UTSA QB's not the Rice one though. Dajon gives us a better chance at winning those games, but I still dont think we have a better team overall than UTSA or Rice. Those games are also on the road.

Is it time to hire a dedicated QB Coach?

Is it time to hire a dedicated QB Coach?
Mean_Green09 replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
Wallace is not a guy I want anywhere near our team. He won't put in the effort to make anyone better. He is a "me" first guy. We can find other QB gurus that are much much better. -
Yes our secondary is the strength. I just believe after watching what La Tech does, they are going to find success against our guys. I'm not expecting it to be a mismatch. Im just expecting their WR's and passing game to win more battles than our DB's. I dont believe La Tech will score their points on the ground. They are going to have to do it through the air. If La Tech was going to try to attack us deep all game that match-up advantage would have gone UNT's way. What Tech wants to do is what UNT is willing to give up. Sokol may go for 250+ in passing and he may complete a large number of passes. What we cant allow is for one of those passes to turn into an explosive play.

MGN: Billy & Greg's Double-Eagle Bracket Coverage

So much of the focus coming out of week one was on the QB position. This week there is still plenty of concern amongst Mean Green fans about the QB. What are your thoughts on where UNT stands with its QB position going into the Louisiana Tech game? BillySee58: Our qb play is not going to change drastically by year’s end. You hope to see more improvement throughout the year, but our qb play is not going to win us games anytime soon and it would take monumental progression for that to happen at any point this year. We want to get up early, let our defense suffocate our opponent, and pound them away for 4 quarters. No interceptions is huge, but we are still lacking much consistency, especially throwing downfield, from our qbs and Greer. QB play was better, but that's to be expected with more time to throw and playing at home in a less hostile environment. We may need a bigger step up this week. Read More: BILLY & GREG’S DOUBLE-EAGLE BRACKET COVERAGE I want to thank BillySee58 for his great insight. If you guys have topics or questions that you would like us to cover please let me know and we will work those into these pieces every week. -
Will we find out a lot about our offense in latech game?
Mean_Green09 replied to EagleGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I wouldnt say they are below average. They are decent. They have a very good secondary. Got a good LB in Tony Johnson. DL is average not great at pass rushing. They have faced 2 far superior offenses then we have faced in ULL and Oklahoma. So we will be the worst offense they have faced. Im sure they are feeling pretty confident in their D's ability to stop our O We got an avg UT and a horrible SMU -
Tech's offense comes to life, puts up 533 yards vs. Cajuns
Mean_Green09 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
There is a belief amongst La Tech people that our secondary is weak and not good at covering. Also believe we cant rush the passer. -
He has plenty zip. He has to have it with his long release. He threw a couple of ducks when he moved out of the pocket. Mechanics were the cause plus he tried to overthrow it.
-
Ash playing wouldn't have changed the outcome one bit. They got dominated in the 3rd qr.
-
Why does Dajon have to start? Why not give him a package? Give him something to work for. He might not be ready to start, but he can spark this offense every once in awhile.
-
Yeah it take some effort, but once you get in a rhythm it goes a little better. I like doing these for other fans and because it's fun. Makes it easier when your winning too!

Thanks.

MGN: Billy & Greg's Double-Eagle Bracket Coverage
Mean_Green09 posted a topic in Mean Green Football
In this first edition I tackle five good topics with GMG.com’s Recruiting Analyst BillySee58. Offensively how did you like our game plan to attack the UT defense? Did you feel like we did good job setting things up and just poorly executing or was it a combination of both? BillySee58: Because of the frequent three-and-outs and short drives, as well as the blitzes and pressure that never allowed the passing plays to develop, it was hard to truly get a good read on what we were trying to do offensively. It did look like we were going to try and exploit their inexperienced safeties and big linebackers over the middle in the passing game. Marcus Smith appeared to be open early on but the throws missed high. When you miss high over the middle you’re asking to get picked, and that’s what happened on the second throw. Read More: MGN: Billy & Greg's Double-Eagle Bracket Coverage Again I want to thank BillySee58 and his great insight. Every week Billy and I are going to go in depth into a few or maybe just one topic. We look forward to putting these together for y’all. -
I will say this and I don't care if I get flak or not. I think the offensive performance had a lot to do with the QB competition lasting as long as it did. I've seen enough QB competitions to know the longer one lasts, the more unprepared a QB looks. I think you could have named Josh the starter after week 1 in camp. Hell you wouldn't even have to name him publicly, but he needed all the first team reps he could get. Now the QB competition is open again and we are splitting reps. I'm sure Josh will win it again, but we've wasted more time. Time that could have been used to prepare him better than what we saw last week.

Should of called a hot route or audible'd to avoid this. Unacceptable
-
Yes had McNulty noticed the zero coverage and that he had a LB (Edmond) matched-up with I believe Kidsy then this should have been a big play. Simple hot route. He could have easily also dumped it to Reggie and it would've been a big gain. This is what happens when your eyes drop down to the rush rather than down the field. Its a mistake you don't expect a RS JR to make. A guy who has been in the system for 4 years.

Did he say who was starting at QB in this call?
