Why this year is so important for UNT Football
Mean_Green09 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This is spot on Sir! Last year was the important year. We needed to capitalize on success and continue to grow the program. Instead things got stale and outsiders now look at 2013 like it was a fluke. Recruiting also took a hit. Yes the staff found some good players, but it wasnt because of the bowl season in 2013. We failed in an epic way in 2014. It really pointed out the McCarney flaws. That year was supposed to be his type of players, but yet we heard all the bs about its hard to recruit here, and we dont have enough D1 players. I dont see Chad Morris complaining about his talent. No he is making it work bc he knows his system works. Mac's ultimate failure will be like most coaches. It will be his inability to find a QB. He also failed to adapt his program to the new times. Love him for 2013 even though he under achieved with a good team. Dislike him for putting our program behind. I hate playing catch-up. Also if you're going to change you offensive scheme like we have about 3 times under Mac then please bring in a different OC. -
Rice looking for bounce-back win against UNT

If it is 2 separate plays. Did Carlos Harris run the ball in each of those plays? The most important point to be made here was the fact that the OL didnt play well pure and simple. They werent set up to fail. They a long with the QB need to play better. North Texas faced a ton of 6 man boxes against SMU, and good amount of 7 man boxes where the STAR LB would blitz off the edge. It wasnt 8 man or 9 man boxes. SMU consistently had their safeties away from the line of scrimmage. The offensive scheme is archaic. All these spread plays are just old school stuff put into spread formations. We did spread SMU out, we just didnt take advantage of the opportunities that came about during the game. Mac's Road record has nothing to do with how many people SMU put in the box. It has more to do with preparation and execution. You know what your right I saw 11 guys in the box every play Saturday night. I guess everybody on the field is in the box. I guess the box is a lot bigger than I originally thought. It includes everything within the white lines. Maybe I should count everybody around the ball once the tackle is made too. You believe in results, but you dont get those results without execution of the play call. Did Canales call a great game? Hell No, but he made far fewer mistakes than the guys on the field did. Whatever I give up. -
Rice looking for bounce-back win against UNT
Mean_Green09 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Here again 4-2-5. Only 5 in the box, but I'll give you 6 he is close enough. A single high safety, but no other safety creeping towards the line. 6 men in the box again with 2 deep safeties. In this play the LB near the top shifts back to the middle, and the corner ends up blitzing. McNulty saw the blitz and ended up thorwing it deep to Harris. But where is this 9 man box we keep hearing about? 3rd quarter down 17-13 still safeties no where near the box. -

2nd quarter. 6 men in the box. 4-2-5. 2 high safeties. 1st play of the game 6 men in the box. The defender at the bottom of the screen was on Smiley and when he went into motion that defender starter towards the box. He still inst in it. Two deep safeties. They had the same look on 2nd down. -
Rice looking for bounce-back win against UNT

They are in run support because it's a run and the ball has been handed off. Why else would a DB be in the backfield with a WR blocking him? How do you count a DB on the outside as in the box? Run support is not the same thing as counting the number in the box pre snap. -

They were not playing a 3-3-5 or 4-3. It was 4-2-5. -
Rice looking for bounce-back win against UNT
Mean_Green09 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
The first picture you don't count the box after the play starts. What was it pre snap? The corner doesn't count as in the box. The majority of the night North Texas faced a 6 man box. When SMU would go 7 it would be a blitz off the edge from one of their safety's. -
Rice looking for bounce-back win against UNT

I believe the film and what I saw rewatching the game twice. Saturday opportunities were there. Execution was the root cause of no running game. It's not just an excuse. When an OL runs by the guy he is supposed to block and that guy makes the tackle. What is that? A bad play call? No it's poor execution. You believe in results well you don't get results without execution. North Texas would've won that game had the OL & QB played much better. -

There wasn't 7,8,9 in the box Saturday. The OL had trouble with 4,5,6. Numbers didn't matter. The plays were there to be had. Execution was THE #1 problem. The OL wasn't set up to fail they did it on there own. -

You Sir would be very correct. It wasn't just the QB. The run game was stuffed many times bc the OL missed assignments or blocks. It was very tough to watch linemen running downfield looking for guys to block while the back is getting tackled for loss. McNulty also missed read a few plays that were run/pass options where he should've pulled the ball and passed it. Another area where the OL struggled was blitz pickup. McNulty needs to get us out of bad plays too. Kirby struggled with a man straight on him. Rice was disappointing. Rentfro should not be out there at all. If the OL improves the most this week then we have a chance. QB & OL were equally disappointing in my book. -

I would be really, extremely surprised with a 30 point loss. Mac hasnt lost a home game by 30 points since he has been here. If this was game was after losing out on a chance to go bowling or losing 5 games in a row I could maybe see a blood bath. Its going to be tough to win with QB & OL play like we got last week, but I expect the team to come out with a pissed off hungry attitude. Everybody is hating on them and the staff. No one believes in them. That us vs. the world is set up. We have talent just need better execution. Rice doesnt quite scare me like everyone else. I would not be surprised if North Texas won this game. -
UTEP not looking as good as many thought they would. Losing Jones really hurts their chances.

Mack Brown lol,but Patterson was a d-bag and pissed off the donors. -
Hate to tell y'all who dont like Canales, but it wasnt the play calling on Saturday night. Yes there were a couple of bad calls, but the plays were there. The execution on the OL and at the QB position was the problem. McNulty missed 2 TDs and another possible one on the drive where we kicked a FG to make it 6-7. The OL consistently missed assignments and blocks. The QB consistently didnt go through his progressions, didnt make the right reads, was to timid on his delivery, and didnt recognize the blitz. Its not really complicated. Saw a lot of simplicity out there. Also saw a lot of mental mistakes and missed reads.

Man @Harry I've lost all faith at this point with the staff on how to handle the QB situation. There really is no explanation to what or why they do what they do. The best thing I can come up with is trying to get McNulty more snaps and get the offense in rhythm. That was only his 8th start. Maybe they were trying to build momentum into the Rice game with a late drive. Maybe they were trying to avoid a QB controversy. Maybe they just dont care. Maybe they are just to damn stubborn. Maybe they honestly feel that they are doing the right thing and we all have no clue.
-
Dont confuse zone read with a straight hand off that is meant to look like a zone read.
-
According to Mac plan A. McNulty has not failed. He expects, believes, and guarantees, McNulty will play better against Rice.
-
Another guy will get snaps. McNulty cant survive the hits he will take from the poor pass protection. But the plan is to not allow any other QB to hit the field. This staff is prepared to stick with him for better or worse.

Who was the UNT player of the game against SMU?
Mean_Green09 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
No doubt in my mind it was Keena. -
I wouldn't fire him yet after week one. I'd let the season play out. Maybe he gets this team to rally. However, the way things are going right now he won't be able to rectify the situation. He isn't going to allow the offense to be wide open. He is going to stick with McNulty like a boat captain going down with his ship. The reason you have to move on from Mac is the offensive woes. If North Texas wants to be a top tier P5 program they need to be able to score more than 23 points a game like his teams have averaged throughout his career. Defense & special teams are nice, but today's college football game is about offense. Mac has shown his teams are inept on offense. He has shown an inability to change with the times. I appreciate his work here. He cleaned up a mess, but we need a different guy to take us to the promise land.
-
If Watson down at UT could give the middle finger to Strong and completely scrap the game plan why couldn't Canales do the same? Mac might be pleasantly surprised. The design and play calling of this offense are flawed. Chico is not doing himself any favors.

No Baylor didn't have any passing yards on 3rd down. Basically they never needed to throw on 3rd down -

Got to see him produce more, be more consistent with catching, and improve in blocking. I could easily see his rating go up to around 84 by the end of the year.
