MGB: It's time for the Get Your Rear on the Record contest
Mean_Green09 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Historical data does matter sometimes, but I think Mac was so poor at preparing his team's for road games. The game plans were just terrible and the team just wasn't well coached. I don't think it's fair to lump that on this staff yet. Especially coming for someone who is all about prove it on the field as you are. The kicking woes are an issue. It's doubtful we blow anyone out. We need better in that area. Littrell is so many things that Dodge and Mac weren't. I'm not expecting miracles I'm expecting FBS level competency. I expect our team to look like an FBS squad on the field regardless of scholarships. As far as I'm concerned once the ball is kicked off against SMU SL is on the clock. He better get this team to put lots of points on the board and he better start winning games. -

Laziness & poor research can also lead people to pick too many wins. It's not just about how good we might be. It's also about the other teams on our schedule. Like UTEP. Playing a smash mouth physical team with improved QB play at the end of the year doesn't bode well for a team with little depth and size. Or the fact that while we may be a better team than UTSA we get them after facing Army's triple option. Lots of teams struggle the week after playing service academy's. Injuries to the DL in that game may play a huge roll in the UTSA game. MTSU is still good but they've already lost 3 play makers to injury. Could be one of those seasons where the injury bug gets them. -
Not arguing that this wont take a year or two because we dont have all the pieces that fit the puzzle. Going through progressions doesn't take time in this offense. Its designed to make decisions quick and easy. Its makes it easy for QBs. Speed up the decision making process. You can tell if a kid has some pocket awareness. Lets not act like its impossible. I think many people will be maddened how many times they will THROW the ball vs SMU. Littrell wants to throw it and throw it a lot. Dont be completely fooled by what he did at UNC. Look I understand that you dont completely get the Air Raid offense and its principles. We have some of the best guys to every play in the Air Raid coaching it. We got guys coaching it who've learned from the best. Maybe some on here are overestimated what can be accomplished, but you are grossly under estimating the new offensive scheme. I get it you cant unsee the Dodge days, and the McCarney no offense. This offense isnt the next coming. Its the now.

The discussion was talent vs athlete. Apparently we have below FCS level athletes. Everyone we play will be superior athletes compared to our weak slow guys.
-
That is such a BS statement. So we are playing a bunch of P5 schools that are consistently in the top 25 of recruiting? Your saying the 11 we put on the field aren't good athletes? Are we putting 11 weak slow walk-ons on the field? 4 WRs who run a 4.7 or slower? I get that we dont have a ton of talent or depth. But dont say most teams we play will have superior athletes, because that is such a weak statement. Its lazy.
-
What normally happens when Air Raid teams get shut down is they go up against teams with superior athletes in the DL. Or you will see some really good schemes like LSU vs the Aggies a couple of years or go. Or ND State vs Montana. With the exception of Florida we wont be going up against superior athletes all the time. We also wont face a bunch of DCs with schemes that make me worried.

Saban and Kiffin came out last year and say this kid was leading the QB battle for much of the camp. They were the ones that said he made very few mistakes against their number 1 defense during the season. He lost the battle because Coaker and Batemen had more upside/potential. And its pretty tough to run press coverage against an Air Raid team. You know you can use things like motion that really cant be pressed. Mesh routes will be used all day long against your idea. Who says SMU has a good enough DL to get pressure? Their DL was one of the worst in the country last year. You also assume that SMU has all conference DBs.
-
I sure do hope SMU does this. I sure do hope they force a QB who made few to no mistakes against a top 5 defense everyday in practice to make good quick decisions. I sure do hope they force us to throw deep against a secondary that gave up nearly 16 yards per completion last year. Which would rank 127th I sure do hope they think that Goree and Bussey cant win on the outside. I sure hope they think that their LBs and Safeties can cover our inside WRs with no help. Morris might set records against that.
-
Not saying you're wrong about the OL bc I believe they are the weak point. However DT and Morris played in two different offenses. Morris will throw more but should benefit from the fact that the ball will come out quicker. There won't be as many long developing routes. Still OL is very shaky and I have concerns too
-
He will probably get more offers as the season goes on. He may even get a P5 offer. I still feel pretty confident about him coming here. Starkel was short notice. This staff has built a nice relationship with Pearson. He will have a chance to start next season.
-
I dont think is a great athlete or a scrambling QB. I think he is pocket passing QB first. I havent seen him have balls batted down. I dont think he is a program savior, but he is a FBS level QB that can win and perform well in this system.
-
Even if Fine was an All-American they would still be bringing in 1 or 2 more QBs with the 17 class, because of everything else you pointed out. No depth. I'd imagine every class under Littrell will have at least one QB. So Fine's ability has no impact on the 17 class.
-
Even if the Coaches felt great about Fine and his talents (which they do) they'd still go out and try to land 2 QBs with the 17 class. They've already landed 1. Fine's abilities aren't going to dictate what this staff does with QB offers.
-
Im not disagreeing with you. I think Fine can play right now and win games as the QB. I DONT think he can survive a full season as the QB. My main concern would be the OL protecting him. I DO think he should be the backup QB and should see reps should Morris get hurt or we blow someone out. I really dont care about RS him. If we get to a point in the season where we arent making a bowl game I'd like to see him start. IMO in game experience out weighs the benefits of sitting a year. Id feel more comfortable about our QB situation next year if Fine saw some time this year.

They dont have another option worth looking at right now.

So we had this many live games available to stream or watch on TV in the Belt? I dont remember that. -
You cant get any intellectual football talk here anymore. I dont think he has the vocabulary. I also dont think he is a racist.

He isn't. Not at this stage. Is he better than our previously recruited QBs? Yes. Is he worthy of a scholarship? Yes. He still has a long way to go. We tend to over hype backup QBs around here. Morris is the starter and it's not even close. Dont get wrong Fine has a pretty strong arm. He is pretty accurate. He does stare down WRs. He does leave the pocket a little early. I don't think he could survive the beating yet. I'm excited to see his growth, but let's not get carried away.
-
I thought they were better in pass protection than the spring game. At times they struggled to open up running lanes. Thought they handled the multiple blitzes well. Rice had a few bad snaps. Its a work in progress.
-
Goree struggled today. You could tell he was a bit frustrated. Bussey is in the two deep and probably a starter
-
He didn't get a ton of targets but he looks quicker as a WR than he did as a DB. He will be in the two deep and maybe a starter. He made a nice transition
