Not really. There is a reason that gays may seem intolerant towards those that want to take away their rights. You know, because they are gay, and they deserve the same rights as everyone else. Look back in history, to when blacks were going through this same issue. People were trying to outlaw interracial marriage, and make it so blacks cannot vote. Blacks fought this, and were intolerant towards people that disagreed with them. I think you'll agree that they had good reason. Anyone that doesn't support rights for all is intolerant, not the other way around. I support everyone's right to an opinion and belief, but no one has the right to legislate their belief, especially when it takes away other's rights. Like I said, if you don't think it's okay for gays to get married, then don't partake in gay marriage. It isn't your decision how other's live their lives. That doesn't make any sense. It isn't ANYONE'S job, including the states. If gays don't have the right, due to the state they live in, then they need to fight for the right. It wasn't the states right to play moral cop back when racism was the issue either. There is a reason the federal government made it impossible for the states to play moral cop when it comes to outlawing interracial marriage and preventing blacks from voting. The same logic applies here. There is no reason other than religion that someone would want to outlaw gay marriage. Due to that, it cannot be outlawed, because religion cannot be legislated. Easy.

I was really hoping I'd be able to make it to the LSU game, but on a student budget, having to spend that much on gas and a hotel for the night is just too much ): there's an outside chance that I'll have to head down to Austin that weekend anyways, but even if I don't the cash factor and the fact that classes will have just started make it a tough pill to swallow. I'll be at my aunt's watching on ESPNU though. I hope a bunch of people make it down there though, let them Tigers know we are legit and have legit fans! Thanks! I'll be glad to give a student perspective on things throughout the year, and into the future. I'm hoping it gets better than last year. There's such a big divide in opinion about the sports teams, some people are hardcore, and some are hardcore against going. I've actually been flamed by another student big time for calling it pathetic how Michigan can get 100,000 people to their games, and there is a student ticket waiting list despite the fact they have to pay to get in, and they got upset at me and told me I was too crazy about football (no such thing) and that not everyone likes football and I should respect that (what?). Oh well, it'll change in time. If we win, they will come. There are a lot of people that just couldn't care either way, and those are the people I try to sway. It is a tough urge to fight! Haha. It's cool to see alumni from your era and even much farther back on this site. I know someday I'll be that guy supporting the living hell out of UNT (and wherever I end up for grad school) sports despite the fact that it's been 20, 30, 40 years since I graduated. I will gladly take you up on that offer! Last year I just sat outside the gate bored for a couple hours before gametime to ensure I got front row at the 50 on the student side. Cheers everybody!

has tony mitchell healed anyone this week?
UNTstormchaser replied to dahbeed's topic in Mean Green Basketball
You guys still scare me a bit though, what you had last year was good enough when it counted. But to answer the original question, I haven't heard much since the LBJ Skills Academy. -
Kind and gentle isn't necessarily what I'm pulling for, just an end to unnecessary stupidity and bickering. I can tell from contextual clues on the older posts when things are done in a joking manner, but it seemed that there are many examples of threads going to shit because of unnecessary, and often irrelevant, bickering. And it can be entertaining, but it also can be counterproductive. A disagreement where people present points and aren't arguing for the sake of arguing is a wonderful thing.

I'm not in the area currently, so I have no clue, but if someone could watch it and then tell us any new information, that'd be lovely.

This legitimately made my day. So damn funny.

Going through all the comments that were posted after mine, I guess none of you have any real sense. It's so simple that it's ridiculous. It's a controversy because CFA donates millions to organizations that try to legislate Christianity, namely making gay marriage illegal. What he said brought that to light. Whatever your opinion or beliefs, fine. But, not everyone will share that view. Telling people to screw or F off isn't going to make your point any clearer. Besides, I think the gay marriage issue has a very simple solution. It needs to be legal, precisely for the reason that we all have the right to freely believe and practice any religion we want. And because of that, we cannot legislate religion, or prevent change due to religion. In some religions, it may be okay for gays to get married, and people without a religion could give a damn who marries who. Therefore, to protect all involved, anyone should be able to marry anyone if they choose to do so, the only restrictions should be against incest because that's just unsafe for reproductive purposes, and if a brother and sister, or different gender cousins cannot get married because of that, then we need to have that restriction for gays as well. If you don't believe in gay marriage, fine. There's a simple solution to that. If you're a guy, don't marry a guy. If you're a woman, don't marry a woman. Problem solved. It isn't your job to play moral police with our laws and rights.

On a side note, I need a much smaller signature picture. That thing is humongous. I'll be changing that in a moment.

I thought the same thing when I saw TSU was our opening game. I was born and raised in Cumberland, all 18 years here in RI were spent there. But since it borders Pawtucket I've been there hundreds of times, usually to go to a Pawtucket Red Sox game. And of course, I've been to Providence countless times as well.

Hey everybody, let me introduce myself as I am new to gomeangreen.com. My name is Chris, I'm going to be starting my sophomore year at UNT this fall. I am originally from Rhode Island, and a relocated family member allowed me the opportunity to open a new chapter in my life in our fine state of Texas. I am a Geography major, and, as you can guess from my presence on this site, an avid UNT sports fan. I may be new to Mean Green Nation, but that doesn't mean I'm not every bit as passionate a fan as the rest of you, young and old a like. I was there for the opening of Apogee, I was there in Hot Springs this year, and I'll make damn sure I am front row at the 50 in the student section for all the football games for the rest of my time as a student here, and I'll attending every home basketball game and traveling with my fellow students up to Hot Springs this year and El Paso (providing there is a student bus, which is iffy given the distance) the following year for our conference tournaments. I'm currently parading myself around Rhode Island this summer sporting my Mean Green gear proudly, as I see others wearing bandwagon clothing (UCONN, Boston College, even occasionally Texas...). Anyways, enough mindless ego stroking, I have a point to make. While I am very new to gomeangreen.com, I have spent the last couple weeks reading through this site's forums as a guest, and I've noticed an interesting trend. No matter what the original topic, a large amount of the threads result in stupid bickering; people here seem to hold grudges against each other and it results in unnecessary arguments. I may be new to being a part of this wonderful school and fan base, and may not know the history of our sports teams like a lot of you do, but there is one thing I absolutely know. This is a special, special time to be a part of this university, both athletically and academically. I want everyone I know to be a part of this great time. I am incredibly excited for the upcoming football and basketball seasons, I truly feel that both are going to be incredible this year. But, as a fan base, instead of bickering over pointless things, why can't we join together, and be one? Of course, people have differing opinions over things, and this is the internet, so having arguments or disputes over things are inevitable, but there is a difference between having a constructive disagreement with a fellow fan and having a stupid, petty argument that gets nobody anywhere. Just to clarify, it isn't just this website that I see this trend on. On facebook, there is a page called "Fill Apogee"; the point of the group is to try to get the word out to as many people as humanly possible to try to sell out the home opener. The link of the group will be listed below, for those who are interested in joining. But, even on that group, which is filled with mostly students, petty arguments broke out over whether Texas Southern was a weak team to have for our home opener (not necessarily referring to the team's talent level, but more of weak on our end that that is the best we can schedule), and whether or not FCS is considered D1 or not. This is not only stupid, and irrelevant, but it's also counterproductive. Even if that logic applied (which obviously it doesn't, as anyone who follows college football will understand), the point isn't who we are playing, it is that we are playing. We should go out and support our team 100%, no matter the opponent, and pointless bickering over stupid stuff isn't going to accomplish that goal. Anyways, what ended up happening was a couple players stepped in and commented, Mason Y'Barbo, and none other than Derek Thompson. And I will post what they said. Y'Barbo: All I ask is yalls support. This is going to be a monumental season for us and i want you all to experience it with us. No need for the back and forth name calling and arguing ( though it is amusing). Just please be behind us 100% as one. Thompson: Yall dont really understand how much we feed off of our fans when we step on the field at Apogee. We need this place rockin every time we hit the field! I promise we will put a team out there that will do special things this year. All we ask is that when a home game comes around, that teams never forget the atmosphere at Apogee. Its such a psychological advantage! Hope to see everyone out there this year. Go Mean Green! After these guys commented, the bickering stopped, which is not surprising. And they're right. This is a special team, and it's going to be a special year. If we all put ourselves 100% behind these guys, and believe in them even when times are tough, I really think we can make a bowl game this year. We're going to shock some people in conference play, much like WKU did last year. Same thing with the basketball team, it's really going to be a special year. Especially now with TJ Taylor apparently added, this is really a team that can be top 25, or higher. Who knows, maybe this can be our Butler year? Anything is possible. We have a star. We have a returning supporting cast. We have a new very talented addition. And most of all, they believe they can do it. Just look at the twitter feed from these guys, they believe that they can be the best. Chris Jones seems to think he'll be in the NBA Draft next year. While that is probably silly and not going to happen, these guys have confidence coming into this year. And they have us to back them. So, this is my plea. My plea to North Texas fans everywhere, but starting with you guys. We are one, we stand for the same thing, root for the same team. We are on the same team. Let's fill Apogee. Let's get to a bowl game. Hell, let's win the damn conference, in both sports. Let's make a run in the NCAA Tournament. Let's help Tony win National Player of the Year, and be drafted Top 5. Let's do this, together. We are North Texas, Go Mean Green.

My only thought here is that some things are bigger than sports. If a person that's a part of Mean Green Nation feels strongly against CFA, they should stand up against them and we should all support their decision. If someone stands with CFA, we need to support that decision as well. All one needs to do is look at Penn State to see what happens when people let sports interfere with issues of morality and humanity. This is 1000 times smaller scale obviously, one making the decision whether or not to support the local CFA that supports UNT sports isn't the same as a child sex abuse scandal, but the same logic applies. We need to leave sports out of issues or morality and humanity.

I feel like I can give a unique viewpoint to the situation, or "controversy" as it may have turned into at this point. Being an atheist that lived 45 minutes from Boston my entire life that has a gay family member that I love dearly. I never ate Chick-Fil-A (I'm typing CFA from now on, I hate having to type the damn dashes) until last August when I began attending UNT, so I have no bias towards the fact that I grew up in love with their food as we don't have it here in New England, save for a couple of random malls in Massachusetts that I've never even been to. So anyways, I hear all the sides to this. I understand the freedom of religion part of it, the freedom of speech part of it, the fact that everyone has their right to an opinion, etc. I also see the side of gay activists and the mayor of Boston (and now also Chicago) that are angry at CFA. I really think what it comes down to is this: all sides are taking it way farther than necessary. Gay marriage and equality is absolutely my biggest passion, nothing ever gets me angrier than a bigoted Christian trying to legislate his or her religion by making gay marriage illegal, yet even I was not overly upset at what CFA's owner said. I believe what he said was that the company was "guilty as charged" in that they believe in the bible's definition of a family. I disagree with his standpoint, but it wasn't like he went out of his way to bash homosexuals. I think that what his statement did was bring the fact that CFA is a very Christian company that donates millions of dollars to organizations whose primary objective is to protect the biblical definition of marriage and family, and are fighting to legislate it. That's what most people seem to be angry at. CFA is also going to great lengths to cover it's ass on this, including making a fake facebook account to spread lies about when and why some toys were pulled from their stores (they got called on it, and yes it was funny. The company that provided the toys ended their partnership with CFA due to their stance on gay marriage, and the next day CFA said they were pulling the toys due to safety issues. The fake account was created to argue with people that the toys had been called weeks ago, which they had not, and they executed it incredibly poorly) As for the activists, I completely applaud them for standing up for what they believe in (especially considering they're right), and I support them 100%. If someone wants to boycott CFA, fine. If someone, for whatever reason, completely agrees with CFA and supports them, that's fine too, as dumb as it may be. The mayor of Boston, in my opinion, is correct as well in this scenario. Massachusetts was the first state to legalize gay marriage, and Boston is the population, cultural, and economic center of Massachusetts. The mayor of Boston shook the hands of same sex couples as they walked into the place in Boston to get married the first day that it was legalized. Boston also has a very long history of tolerance and of fighting oppression, highlighted by the Freedom Trail in the city. The proposed CFA was planned to be put in the area of the CFA, right across the street from part of it if I remember correctly. It would be a backhanded slap to the city to put a company that is fighting against progression in that spot, so I do not disagree with him. Whether or not it's legal is up for debate, but we'll find that out in due time. But I believe morally, he is correct. I guess, in conclusion, while I completely disagree with how CFA feels, it's their right to feel that way. As long as they continue to hire indiscriminately and aren't saying anything worse than what they did, then it's okay. They're owner may have half of a brain, as does the PR part of the company, but stupidity isn't a crime. I support the activists to make a stand and make their point. I think personally, what is better than a boycott is my idea, and another idea that a friend of mine had. 1: If you disagree with CFA, every time you eat there donate the amount that your meal costed to a gay rights charity or organization (my idea). 2. Eat there wearing a shirt that says Legalize Love, or something like that. Regardless, opinions are what make the world go 'round. Cheers everybody. I mean no offense in my post, this is just my opinion.

I sent him a message on facebook and commented on the article to alert him of the errors. I'm sure it was just an honest mistake. GMG.
-
Also, considering UTSA plays at the Alamodome, it was probably just an honest mistake of mixing up the 2 domes of someone who isn't familiar with the area.
-
It's the 2013-2014 sports season, probably just a mix up of words or a poor attempt to make sure less intelligent readers don't assume they're joining January 1, 2013.

Are we really bitching over +/-? C'mon guys, unite as one! I'd say "We are North Texas" but any line starting with "We are..." has been tainted by Penn State. So instead, Go Mean Green. That being said, let's just be pumped we have another weapon to our team.
