the real problem is at this point there are 2 programs in the DFW area and at least 6 or 7 in Texas that could take the coach that makes the "giant awake" in a heart beat and it is right back to square one if north Texas is pushing the limits paying DMac $400,000 per year well TCU and SMU can pay at least 5X that and Texas, A&M, Tech, Baylor, can all pay 5X or more and UH can pay probably 3X that or more and even UTEP might be able to lure a coach away with their fan support and stronger history and better pay the coach would not even have to move his family to go to TCU or SMU and if you are making $2 million per year even if you are gone after 4 years that is $8 million total which would take 20 years to earn at north Texas making $400,000 per year...only a fool would turn down 5X the pay guaranteed for 4 years to go to a place that has a much better winning tradition (TCU) or even a better winning tradition overall and better recent winning history (SMU) especially when the facilities are better and the financial support for the program is much better and hell those 6 or 7 teams are only the teams in Texas that could pull him away and again two of them would not even require a family relocation and even if the "winning" did bring in fans to fill the stands those 10K new fans would have to be coming into the stands paying 30 dollars per ticket X6 games to come close to matching what TCU or SMU could pay a coach and that is a huge risk to try and match TCU or SMU on coaches pay based on the idea that north Texas will continue to win and draw those fans for 4-5 more years while paying a coach close to 2 million per year...if the wins dropped off in year 2 or 3 of that deal and the fans dropped off you are looking at either lowering ticket prices and hoping that brings a few fans back or you are looking at sticking it to the fans that do show up for high prices and hoping you can weather the losses until something changes sure some situation could develop like Boise where the coaches that take over do even better until you get to a coach that wants to be at that place for reasons other than money, but again Boise does not have two other programs with much more money less than an hour away that could let the coach stay in that area and still make a lot more money with a job jump the time to act on the "sleeping giant" thing was 10 to 15 years ago now with 12 D1-A programs in Texas, TCU in the Big 12, and SMU having the backers step up to pay for a winning coach and making conference moves themselves the competition is going to be fierce to even sustain wins much less hold on long term to a coach that does turn it around and win with consistency

McCarney to take long look at roster and signing day thoughts
GL2Greatness replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
david brown jr. would argue with that line of thinking -
just think in nearly 25 years from now USA fans will be talking about that big program changing bad call against north Texas....or not...

if you are so obsessed with UT you should have tried harder to get accepted there and the idea that a single season somehow erases all that UT has accomplished over the last decade+ VS A&M is just a complete joke made by a fool let me know when A&M has a national championship and plays for another one.....let me know when A&M plays in or wins a BCS game much less several the last time A&M won more than 9 games in a season was 1998 UT has done it 9 times since then and could do it again this year with a win over TCU and a bowl win A&M is 0-1 in BCS games from back in 1999....UT is 3-1 with two of them being for the national championship if you think this single season will erase all of that you are just a fool and the worst part of your post is that you pretend as though somehow A&M gives a crap about north Texas or does not try and "keep north Texas down" more than "UT does" and you pretend as though A&M would not trade places with UT in terms of athletics budget and revenues or that A&M was somehow looking out for the little guy when they went to the SEC hell A&M cares so much about lil' ole' north Texas so much they are 7-0 against you, the only time they played you out of College station was in Irving 1 time and they have not bothered to play you since 1998 while UT is 9-0 against north Texas and has played them 3 times since 1998 *anyone see a pattern here quick Kevin get Rick on the scheduling hotline here is a huge clue SMU could fall off the face of the earth, UT could go win less and A&M could fall off the planet or win a MNC and it will have next to no effect on north Texas if any other than the fans will have a few less boogie men to try and slay while ignoring the realities of their own program

Just for a little comparison, we could've hired this guy

2001 10-2-0 Rankings 10 11 2002 10-3-0 Rankings 10 10 2003 10-3-0 Rankings 9 9 leach would have been a disaster at north Texas......he would have blown things up just like he is doing at WSU and then after one year or at best two years of doing that he would be job shopping as fast as possible for places like Kentucky this year and being mike he would not deny interest in the job at all even when it was clear to all involved that he was out of the running, but he would want to and make an effort to keep his name out there as "leverage" and because he was at a place like north Texas that require a 5 year turn around plan instead of at a place like WSU people would ignore that he was not winning that first and second season and keep his name out there for every "big job" out there and mike would encourage that to the detriment of recruiting and focus -
actually there are plenty of fans on this forum that would love to avoid games with UTSA and TxState until they "pay their dues" which seems to mean suck for a decade and a half in crappy conferences that you are begging other conferences to get out of as fast as you can so you can start bad mouthing them as well I gagree with points 1 and 3 though

GL2Greatness replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
actually he was really not all that well respected by high school coaches in Texas football across the country is not filled with circus geek types and mike was not respected at all by the media because of his refusal to let players talk to the media he really did not recruit all that well for what was available and high schools kind of found him off putting and after the way he is blowing up at WSU right now along with weakening the schedule and you can imagine how things would blow up at north Texas with incidents of players leaving and being run off in mass it would be horrid just like it probably will be for WSU -
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=137&f=1995&t=10444827 well the pansy pirate of the Palouse is busy lowering the standards of competition so he can mix in a win maybe north Texas can lure him into the "trap game" with V. Lane R. pulling his insider connections

16/17 with a 9-3 season with a bowl win -
Just for a little comparison, we could've hired this guy
GL2Greatness replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
his "turn around" is highly overrated his conference record was pretty much identical to Spike Dykes and he did most of the "turn around" by taking teams like Ole' Miss, NCState, and Ohio State off the OOC schedule and adding one or sometimes even two D1-AA teams and very crappy D1-A programs to the OOC instead and Spike would have made a bowl game several more times if there had been 32 bowls to choose from mike won one or two games more per season with a much easier schedule and 12 games being played he was not a huge "turn around" guy by any stretch of the imagination -
Just for a little comparison, we could've hired this guy
GL2Greatness replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
that is not an early university stop for him it is where he retired from in 2007 after being president at Memphis and having other jobs at Alabama he was a faculty and administration at WSU before leaving to Alabama as well, but he returned to WSU after Memphis to be president there and retired from there in 2007 -
um doing something because everyone else is doing it is the epitome of the DFW mentality......a bunch of juvenile herd mentality douchbag losers doing something because everyone else does it and then pretending it is a "tradition" this and stormchaser talking about how younger students eat up bridges and stadiums even if the product on the field is terrible says all anyone needs to know about the younger generation.....all flash and trash and nothing of actual substance.....followers chasing the next trendy thing and then discarding it in a heart beat when the next pile of crap is tossed in front of them

DMac had two guys end up on the Cowboys DMac had an OC that had been there the year before, taken over as head coach for several games, and rallied the team to win a few

Turner Smiley commits to UNT - Mean Green Blog
GL2Greatness replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I think we are in on Smiley Turner as well -
because if you don't dog on the past you are left looking at the present

1. DMac is getting the "right" kind of players those others are just getting some guys 2. no one wants to play at SMU because we have better attendance 3. no one wants to play at SMU or UH because they will be in the Big East 4. SMU will fall apart if JJ is fired and we will steal all their top recruits based on now playing more Texas teams in CUSA 5. everyone lowers the rankings of players when they sign with north Texas and raises them when they sign with AQ conference teams like most of the rest of those 6. we don't give chicken away 7. what will losing do to UTSA and their recruiting 8. TxState will suffer like we did in the belch 9. this is just one writers opinions and ignores that we are like #109 in Scout team rankings which puts us solidly in the lower middle of the belt and in the upper lower of CUSA 10. all is well!

THECB Vote on NT Union Fee (Maybe not good)
GL2Greatness replied to Mean Green Matt's topic in Mean Green Football
1. all those things may be true about the system when lee the idiot started, but he started in 2002 and the endowment for north Texas was 41.73 million in 2001 Southwest Texas (as they were called at the time) was 41.1 Texas Tech was 316.4 now it is 110.7, 119.7 for TxState, and 475 for Texas Tech hell St Mary's in San Antonio was at 77.5 in 2001 and they are at 163 now.....so lee has failed massively at the one thing he was suppose to be really good at which was fund raising.....and north Texas has not had a capital campaign the entire time he has been here while Tech is finishing up a billion dollar campaign, UH started one 1.5 years ago, SMU is in the middle of one for 750 million, and TCU finished one for 250 million that ended up at 425+ million and UTD is in the middle of one now for 200 million, Lamar and TxState have just finished up campaigns that raised well over their goals of 100 million each and UTSA is at 110 million of their goat of 120 million by 2015 and UTEP is going to finish a campaign of 200 million in 2014....not to mention a billion dollar campaign by Rice and 3 billion by UT there was a lot of talk a few months back on this very forum about a big capital campaign announcement in sept, but that came and went with the only real announcements being some money raised to renovate an old building at the Liberty Christian campus for basketball practice.....sure that was a decent amount of money raised for athletics in a short period of time, but where is the big university wide capital campaign and where has one been for the last 8 years while pretty much every other emerging research university in Texas is in the middle of one or finishing one up? on nov 29 2002 the website for north Texas has north Texas offering 98 bachelors degrees, 125 masters degrees, and 47 doctoral degrees...Feb 9 2007 was 96,111, 50 today it is 97, 82, 35...I will be the first to say many of those masters and doctoral degrees were worthless and never should have been offered (who gets an MA in a hard or physical science ), but what type of "leadership" allows a university to go up and down so radically in the types and numbers of degrees they offer especially at the graduate level......higher education moves very slowly it is not the type of place that just says "lets add this degree today" and then next week "lets stop offering that degree".......well at least well run institutions of higher education don't operate that way.....and all that in the midst of a large gain in students...that is just poor planning and poor execution period 2. how is the impact of Bill Lively going to be felt over the next three years going to be felt if Bill has flown the coop after only nine months....and what does that say about the people that have been around for the last 8 years (like lee the idiot) if someone can come in promising to stay one to three years, leave after nine months, and their impact will still be felt for the next three years....to me is says the others are dead weight and need to GO ASAP because someone else out worked them in 9 months VS 8 years 3. the alliances have already formed......it is UT, UH, and Texas Tech especially when it comes to the NRUF requirements......it was those three systems that drove the bus and made the requirements what they were....north Texas was along for the ride and was lucky to not be on the roof of the bus....and if north Texas has such a wonderful relationship with UTD how come UTD has stolen top faculty from north Texas several times including one that is now the Vice President for Research at UTD?.....actually UTD did not even have to steal him or two others that left with him they shopped themselves as a group to UTA and UTD and had offers from both and picked UTD specifically because of a lack of commitment to the hard sciences and research at north Texas also the UT and TAMU Systems lobby on behalf of 100% of their system members to the legislature because those systems are what are called "strong systems" which means the system lobbies on behalf of 100% of the members of the system and the only "weak system" in Texas is the Texas State System where each member lobbies on behalf of themselves, but that system is also looking at a strong system model which is part of the reason that Angelo State left the Texas State System several years back and joined the Texas Tech System and the UT System in particular is very supportive of their members in things such as fund raising and the like using the methods and goals learned for UT Austin to help improve and to set goals for their other system members which is why many of their members are having successful fund raising campaigns right now 4. I doubt most legislators know north Texas exist and now that royce west is gone from the higher ed committee north Texas has no one looking out for them and after all the failed economic development ideas that royce pushed through in dallas showed to be failures I doubt anyone is looking to go to bad for more of the same that was 100% the fault of the system leadership for looking to "dominate dallas" with stupid and unneeded half baked ideas 5. the THECB was actually in favor of the TAMUSA proposal, and they were in favor of it because it was started the proper way which was to partner with Palo Alto College, utilize their existing facilities, and build enrollment to the point that they could support a free standing campus before breaking away to have their own campus and be a free standing university since 2009 when TAMUSA became a free standing university their enrollment has gone from 2,343 to 3,554 in 2011 and to 4,133 in 2012 north Texas-dallas on the other hand in 2009 was 2,109....2,084 in 2010 and 2,032 in 2011 so they DROPPED enrollment every year and is 2,097 in 2012 so they had a very slight enrollment increase for 2012 that still gets them below where they were in 2009 FTEs at each school from 2009 to 2011 are TAMUSA 1428.82 1960.35 2206.72 dallas 999.07 1052.73 1109.82 FTEs for 2012 are 1212 and in case you missed it the law school has not been funded to open for the last 6 years and it has had ZERO dollars other than the 5 million that was allocated in 2007 funded to do anything and it will probably not get funded to open in 2013 either and hopefully will be canceled once and for all.....the fact that north Texas failed to listen to the advice of the THECB on the dallas campus, the law school, the residential building purchase downtown, the UCD building purchase, and has screwed up the UCD lease agreement with TAMU-C and UTA and driven Midwestern and UTD out of the UCD, and they failed to listen to the THECB and the legislature on the size of the second building at the dallas campus is the reason that the THECB watches north Texas so closely now and the fact that north Texas failed so spectacularly on the dallas campus enrollment goals is the main reason The State of Texas has put a stop to new system centers and firmed up the 3500 enrollment requirement for becoming a free standing university nothing like flaunting something over and over and then failing at it over and over to prove you are not worthy......some day that catches up and that ay is now when money is tighter and the last of the spend spend spend fools have been run out of the higher ed committee every single thing that north Texas ignored the THECB and the legislature on has been a failure lastly you are dreaming if you think that TAMU-C would ever consider joining the north Texas system they have first hand experience through the UCD as to what a poorly run system it is and their administrative cost would go up dramatically and their degree offerings and stature would decline dramatically.....Midwestern is perfectly happy as a stand alone university now and into the future and I would imagine if they were to join anyone it would be Texas Tech or UT with zero consideration for north Texas and if you think you are just going to get a hold of TWU and that is that you are dreaming as well if that type of thing starts up you will find it lucky if a north Texas system exist at all after that there is absolutely zero to gain from any of those schools even remotely considering joining the north Texas system...high overhead cost, bloated system operations, no professional program offerings, poor fund raising history, no legislative support, system components that never wanted to be together in the first place, dallascentric focus (along with waste and fraud), and better options or a better current situation already mean not a chance in hell of that happening -
you must be pretty far down in the dumps if you are using a program that is in their second year of playing football at any level ever and that still has better attendance as a comparison....it is not like they dropped down for a few years, dropped the program for 15 years, or played at DIII for several decades.....they started from nothing and they were invited to one conference (the WAC) a year earlier than expected and then when it folded they were invited to the same conference that north Texas has wanted to be in for a decade or more.....before they had played a single D1-A team and their attendance average for the season will still be as good or better than many of the top single game attendance marks for north Texas
