  1. We should always be in the top five or six in Conference USA in recruiting in both football and basketball. We do a pretty good job of picking up kids that didn't get offers from D1 schools but you can't build a program on those kids. You still need to be able to beat out La Tech, Rice, UTEP, UTSA, and yes even SMU for some of the local kids. We have also never spent much time recruiting out of state. I know we have tons of talent in Texas but a lot of those kids don't want to come to UNT. A kid from outside of Texas doesn't have a negative impression of us and that is where we can sell our facilities, DFW, weather, GOOD LOOKING GIRLS!, ect. That takes money and personnel. I'm not saying forget about Texas kids but use some resources to find talent outside the state. Like it or not, we are fighting our image as a program with HS kids. Perception and image means a lot to young recruits.
  2. "Once we get everyone healthy, we are going to make a run!" Benny sez so! How many times have we heard that over the past five seasons???
  3. Anyone know when Frazier and the point guard from San Diego can play? End of finals or start of 2nd semester classes?
  4. I have faith that this coaching staff will get things turned around but we haven't played with the same effort and intensity today
  5. We are not playing physical football. Maybe all the penalties and the ejection last week has caused us to tone it down. If your going to get beat, go down fighting!
  6. For the few fans that attended the men's game last night, did you notice that the player stats board and "hustle" stats board wasn't working? What a joke! We are supposed to be a D1 program. I was told that we only have one computer that runs those boards and it was at the women's game. I have emailed our new AD and hope others will also. It's bad enough to have an under achieving team without having our facilities be a joke. I know this is a little thing but it's the first game of the year and we can't even get our scoreboards working?? We had all summer and Fall to make sure everything was ready. I know Wren has a lot on his plate, but this crap has got to stop. HELP!
  7. This is the first time all year that we look like we have quit. That includes the Florida and La Tech games. I understand that Western Kentucky is really good but the effort isn't there. Hopefully Seth and his staff can light a fire at the half and get them to show some pride or this will be a 60 point loss and a major step backwards. Very disappointed.
  8. I saw a basketball piece on this year's team. No mention of Frazier. Is he still at UNT?
  9. For those of you who like to have a rally beer or two or ten at Apogee, I just found out that Metzler's is still going to have a food booth but more importantly a beer only stand to speed up service! For all you high tone specialty beer consumers, they are going to have over 10 new craft beers! Support local breweries and UNT alumni like Metzler's!!!!!!! Go Mean Green. Beat SMwhooooo!
  10. I guarantee you that if we were 10-0 and had beaten Southern Illinois instead of gotten crushed. The writer would have known it was the UNT and not North Texas State. You have to earn people's respect at home and across the country. UNTJIM1995 is right. They never call us North Texas State when writing about the One o'clock Lab Band. They have earned that respect. Now we need to in athletics.
  11. We are the Rodney Dangerfield of college basketball. Here is a section from an article out of the St,Louis Post Dispatch that I came across today. The story was about Southern Illinois basketball..... The Salukis started the season 8-1, highlighted by its 95-63 victory at North Texas State. This was their best start since 2006. Sure, beating the Not So Mean Green aren't a special this season -- North Texas State ranks 301st in the latest CBSSports.com RPI calculation -- but 30-point road victories for SIU have been rare. Just another kick to the groin for UNT.
  12. I have no problem with questioning any coaches decisions. That's what fans do. I am disappointed with our QB play and don't know why Coach Mac is so set on not giving DW a shot. I also agree that we have yet to sign and develop a top flight QB under Mac's tenure. That's something that has to change. That being said, Coach McCartney is the best thing to happen to UNT football since Hayden Fry. I acknowledge the great bowl run under Coach Dickey but the program was in better shape than the mess McCartney found when he got here. If you watch and listen to what Mac preaches to his players, you understand that we have a REAL D1 football coach leading our program and I have complete confidence that he will get things fixed. Remember we have an extremely young team that will only get better. Mac has EARNED our trust. I'm not at practice or in meetings so I don't know the whole story with DW but hopefully the light will go on for him and he will seize there opportunity that is setting there for him to take over this offense. Go Mean Green!
  13. A source inside the basketball program said that Wesley got into some big trouble and will most likely not be returning to the program. Same type of trouble Coleman got into. That is why we are still chasing JC players when it seems like we don't have spots left. Hope this turns out to not be the case but other info has turned out to be correct. Another blow to Bedford's recruiting record. Sometimes it ain't easy being green!
  14. This basketball season was such a major disappointment. Like everyone else, I was crushed when Johnny decided to go to LSU. It seemed like Tony would be gone for sure and I heard rumors that Jordan and Chris might seek a transfer as well. Then Benford was hired and it seemed like the season was back on. I didn't know who Benford was but all college hoop publications seemed to think he was one of the top young coaching prospects and recruiters in the country, and when he got Coach Evans to join him, I thought we were set for a historic season. Based solely on this year, the Benford hire was a complete failure. Let's play the "what if" game that so many on this board love to play. What if we had hired Shawn DeForrest, like some called for, or Danny Kasper from SFA, or the UTA coach? What would our record have been? It couldn't have been worse, but would we have been a top 25 team? Made the deep run in the NCAA that everyone expected out of the "greatest" team in UNT history. Remembering that this needs to happen with Walton missing the whole season, losing Holman to concussions, Chris for most of the year with a broken foot, and Patton to knee problems. Would another coach have been able to get Overlander to shoot better? Benford's first year was a disaster but even if we had made a better hire, I don't see how this team would have been able to reach the high goals we set. It just wasn't going to happen. Sometimes it ain't easy being green!
  15. Has anyone been able to find out what Alzee did to get suspended from Friday's game? The school officials we asked weren't going to say, just that it was a "serious" violation and was his third violation of team rules this season. I think we deserve to know what happened and is this the type of kid we want in our program his senior year? College age kids make some stupid choices but for me, if it was serious enough for him to have to miss a tournament game, can we count on this kid going forward next year. He really let his team down when they needed him the most. Very selfish on his part. Not knowing what he did makes me question Benford's decision to make him sit out. Back in the day, coaches just ran your butt off for team violations! Just another moment in a horrible season.
  16. I didn't get to make it to the game or listen to the broadcast tonight. Why didn't Coleman play? Was he even on the bench?
  17. If that makes you feel better, that's fine. If Tony doesn't make it in the NBA will that be the coaches fault as well?
  18. I usually stay out of all the negative posts and petty pissing matches but I'm a teacher/coach in Denton ISD and I really get tired of everyone always making excuses for kids when they don't perform well. I'm extremely disappointed with what I've seen from Coach Benford and unless something changes next year, he will probably be gone. I thought he was a great hire last summer. Every college hoops website I looked at said he was one of the brightest young coaching prospects out there, so I don't fault Rick V. on the hire. It was a sound hire that just hasn't worked out. That being said, the players must be held accountable as well. Tony not scoring last night is inexcusable if he truely is a lottery pick. I don't care who is coaching, 2 rebounds for a player with his ability is NOT the coach's fault. That is hustle and nothing else. Benford hasn't seemed to affect Roger's effort. Maybe that says something about how great a competitor Franklin is, but it doesn't let Mitchell off the hook. Great athletes and great players aren't always the same thing. Tony is a great athlete but now is the time he must show his leadership and character and show NBA scouts that he can become a great PLAYER. Benford has made a lot of mistakes but please hold players accountable for their hustle and attitude on the court.
  19. We are looking at an 0-3 start. Ouch! Sure didn't see this coming. I know things will eventually get better but we have ruined any chance of getting big crowds out after this loss. People don't care how good a Div. 2 team this is! IF, IF, IF we win the Sunbelt tournament, say hello to a 15-16 seed.
  20. If that's the best Tony can do against Div. 2 competition, he may want to re-think turning pro! He won't be a lottery pick without being able to dominate a game like this. Injuries or not, this is pathetic.
  21. Thanks Coach Benford for making this a priority!
  22. Back in the early 80's, a bunch of drunken fraternity brothers formed a group called the Mean Green Dunk Club. They sat in the front row and whenever Ken Lyons, Delonte Taylor, David Vasher, ect. got a dunk, they spelled out VAVOOM with cards. V-A-V-O-O-M- VAVOOM! The reference being to a little known character in the old Felix the Cat cartoons. Vavoom was a little guy who yelled out "Vavoom"! and it made buildings, mountains, ect. crumble. You can youtube Vavoom to see him. They didn't have as many prolific dunkers as this year's group will have. I always thought it was very unique. Something I have never seen at any other game. I think this would be cool and a great tradition to bring back with this year's squad. We will be getting some national attention this season and it would be cool to have something that we don't have to copy from another school. Hopefully some new college students will take this challenge and bring back the Mean Green Dunk Club for the old guys that supported North Texas basketball back in the day! Go Mean Green!
  23. Anyone know if there is a link to watch it on the station's website?
  24. Good luck to any guards that dare to drive the lane on T-Mitch and Coleman. Defensively we will own the paint! Can't wait for November.
  25. If LSU offers, JJ is gone this year. His son is AN 8TH grader at Crownover and will be starting HS at Guyer this Fall. Once he starts, JJ won't move until he graduates. He won't move his son around once he starts HS.
