I don't think the NCAA stops teams playing elsewhere for Spring ball. I went to the TT game last spring. It was fun. There was tailgating and everything. Frisco was just an example. Selling out a small stadium looks better than playing in an empty one. Sadly we'll see an empty stadium Saturday on national TV. UNT needs to get creative to get the brand out. I'm not sure what more they can do. There's a ton of alumni in the metroplex that they don't tap into. They aren't really showing up now. I think the athletic department is doing better but there's a ways to go. Heck, they are finally making an effort with Letterman. Before, they basically made Letterman feel unwelcome as soon as you were done playing. I've always thought UNT was stupid in that regard. Speaking of Frisco I really hope we have a good showing at the CUSA tournament at the Star considering it's dang near a home game being played in the Metroplex.

Texas Tech played their Spring game at the Star in Frisco. Their were a lot of fans and recruits there. It was pretty cool. Heck, Rice and Stanford played in Australia. Several teams have played in the UK too.
-
I'm not really sure why anyone down voted you. UNT needs to get people in the area involved. UNT is doing a good time advertising at the Star these days. It's mostly advertising for UNT though, not really sports related.

Why would he take this job? It's not a good career move at all. UTEP always ends badly...

He's correct. It's actually hurting college football. In a few years I could see myself not paying attention to college football because it's not a competitive sport anymore. Undefeated teams have no chance while teams that don't even win their conferences are selected to be champions. I'm getting to the point where I'd much rather watch millionaires kneel because the world is unfair over a ridiculous college football. I hate to say it but this North Texas season has pushed me further from caring about college football. An undefeated CUSA team might not crack the top 20. UCF got 12 and a participation trophy for their perfect season. 9 wins here gets you Troy weeks before bowls are supposed to be played. There's really nothing for these guys to play for other free college and experiences.

He's a good coach. UNT fired him. He owes us zero loyalty. Regardless of what awards or reunions he attends. This would actually be kind of funny if it happened. It would make for some really interesting reading on GMG too.

NT Schedules Home/Home with Cal & Wyoming!
UNTexas replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
Not Denton. We played them. When we went D1 we had the real deal when it came to sceduling. We use to invite teams to play us at Texas Stadium because no one wanted to come to our cricket infested dumpy stadium. Oregon State came in 95 and we beat them at home. Kansas was good back then and came to Texas Stadium. Same with A&M and Army. We gave A&M a scare too. I don't know why we stopped playing some of these teams. I guess RV's 1 bodybag/FCS recipe came into affect. I really like SMU annually though because its good for both teams. I heard we want to start playing Houston a lot more. It's good for recruiting. I'd like Tech more even though they'd shred us right now. -
NT Schedules Home/Home with Cal & Wyoming!
UNTexas replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
90s we played much bigger names. Off the top of my head Missouri, Kansas, Oregan State, Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, Louisville, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Boise State, Utah State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Houston, Baylor, and TCU were all opponents. I'm sure I left a few out. -
I like it. Screw UTEP. I wasted money to fly home to see us play them. Biggest trash fans ever. I hope they fall apart and cancel football for Soccer like many people in EP talk about. It's a waste out there. I say that as an El Pasoan. UTEP is terrible.

The article was very honest and true. A conference championship in an empty stadium looks bad because it was. The CUSA bowl games will be played in empty stadiums too, including ours. Getting people to turn out isn't an easy fix. G5 teams have been deemed irrelevant and people know it. It's showing. Students at UNT don't pay much attention because our sports have been nothing to be proud of. Hopefully it gets better. I know for myself I have kids, their sports are priority over UNT sports every time. I also know people who went to UNT who just want to relax on a Saturday. If they watch sports they are a click away and it costs nothing. As far as bowls, short notice plane tickets, hotels, transportation, ect, on graduation day a week or so before Christmas isn't a recipe for success if you want turnout. There's not going to be an easy fix but I don't see it changing either. I think the G5 teams will become the modern day D1aa and P5 the D1. D1aa mostly had poor turnout, much like we are seeing at the G5 teams.

Don't be worried. It's an irrelevant bowl that will be watched by very very few people on TV and played in front of an empty stadium.

Not a lot of Respect for UNT on the Troy Football Message Board
UNTexas replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I love that people from Troy are talking about name recognition. Few people would even know what state they are in. Let alone they are a D1 team. This bowl is garbage for North Texas. Noon a couple weeks before most bowls is just sad. This bowl shouldn't exist. Bowls use to mean something. Southern Miss who didn't get near the conference championship got the best bowl/opponent out of all CUSA teams. Unreal. -
Speaking of LA Tech, can y'all imagine if we were in their place playing SMU in a bowl in Frisco? The city might burn to the ground. The parking lot would be like the Anchorman fight at a minimum.
-
Again, we won 9 games and get Troy. This is as good as it gets for us. We will accept, probably lose, and talk about what a season it was for years. Ill go to NO and drink to much. It will be the same in 20 years. You're right, it's simple.
-
Apparently just keep being us. Same ole North Texas. We'll be in the same boat in 20 years. I accepted it. It sucks but oh well. Whatever.
-
And UNT wonders why they can't get Denton, students, or alumni to turn out. Troy. Great. On December 16th too. So exciting.
-
True, but on that island of no where Las Cruces is much nicer than El Paso. I'm from El Paso. Cruces is a cool little town and the people there are great. Ever go to EP as an opposing fan? It's a terrible experience. Cruces is a good experience.
-
So depressing. My day is ruined. I'm with a bunch of happy UCF alumni too.
-
Never called anyone an idiot, that is your imagination. Not really but its a little warm for December.
-
Righteousness? Calling bs on on someone claiming an entire state is so creative over another when these coaches are from all over a country isn't righteousness. It's calling bs on a ridiculous statement. FAU isn't some juggernaut of creativity and athletic prowess. We aren't that a very good team.
-
Dude, they lost to Buffalo and Navy...
-
They aren't a legitimate top 25 team, it's just we are a legitimate #80 or #90 type team. We squeaked by so many teams and ran over some bottom feeders and an FCS school. Real teams dominate us. Iowa, SMU and especially FAU gave it to us.
-
We obviously sh$t the bed and lost our first conference championship in CUSA. In pretty embarrassing fashion as well. We were very lucky to have 9 wins. I think we are lucky to play a Sunbelt team and not a P5 school. We want no part of a good program on National TV. Can you imagine what TT would do to us? Our team has pretty far to become a good team that can compete against average FBS teams. For those of you worried about Littrell leaving, that's laughable at best. Kiffan will be gone from FAU though. UNT has a lot of work ahead of it. The worst part is attendance at whatever bowl we end up at has significantly dropped because of how badly they embarrassed ourselves today.

That might be the uninformed post I've read on GMG.
