The irony here is compelling...
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Oh yeah, he should have totally turned down an offer to coach at his alma mater, which is also a P5 school with much higher pay. I don't blame him or hold any animosity and don't think any fans do. He tried it there, it didn't work, but we know what he can do here. Personally, I have no doubt he could turn this ship back around fairly quickly. -

I may get flack for this, but I'd still take Johnny Jones back if he got fired at LSU. -
Yeah and their athletic trainer maybe let it slip to the starters that it was coming up, while accidentally forgetting to tell these 7.

I wouldn't laugh too hard. I have a feeling we, or any other D1 program, would have at least that many "quit" if we drug tested right after the holidays. I suspect they were trying to thin the herd a little here..

This is the system Billy essentially uses in his grading, glad you found a website for it. Basically coincides with our 24/7 ranking, which is main reason why many of us are concerned.

Discrepancy in Recruiting Rankings
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to ChristopherRyanWilkes's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I get that, just seems like there is definitely an inconsistency on some of our recruits among the recruiting sites. Not to say that's uncommon, it just seems odd that the evaluations are so different that two sites have us top 5, while the composite has us in the bottom 5. Even considering omitting the players you mentioned, I've checked all the sites for a few years now and this is the first time I've seen them off by this many spots. -
Discrepancy in Recruiting Rankings
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to ChristopherRyanWilkes's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I guess that's my sub-question then: if 24/7 does a composite of Rivals, Scout, ESPN, and their own, does that mean they and ESPN have us in basically last place in the conference? Do they weigh their own rankings more heavily? Just seems like a larger gap than years past. I believe what you're saying about Rivals and Scout but hope they are right this time around. -
Just checked the recruiting rankings and see that 24/7 has us at #10 in the conference while Rivals has us at #5, and Scout has us at #4. I know they each have different methodologies but that big of a gap seems odd. Anyone have any explanation for this? Also, I don't see Rivals or Scout cited nearly as often as 24/7 anymore, are those two considered almost irrelevant now? I'll hang up and listen.

We always have, the problem is it's not even a competition now, at least with Houston. -
Wren? On BB? Situation??!?!??
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to Shark84's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I'm still confused. I clicked again expecting Benford news. Can we add one more question mark, and an exclamation mark for good measure? Thanks -MGMT -

Please add a "?" So we know this is a question rather than information on Wren and Benford. Thanks. -
When we get blown out by both is more like it. This game is over and LaTech will destroy us. I guess I can handle waiting until the weekend. I trust he'll be gone soon. Soon is relative though, more like 5 years too late. Sad.

If we don't fire Benford after the game or soon thereafter I'm going to count that as my first time questioning Wren in his short time here.

Recruiting Folderol & Whatnot
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to MeanGreenMailbox aka TFLF's topic in Mean Green Football
Well here's to hoping Wren Baker can find those unicorns that can do both. Seems to me the up-and-coming coaches know the G5 schools that can be a catapult to a higher level like Houston and we are left with guys we always have to take somewhat of a chance with. UTSA took a chance with Frank Wilson, too. He was never a sure bet to recruit well there, but sure enough he has. He's still not a sure bet to coach well on the field. Just the way it goes. -
Recruiting Folderol & Whatnot
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to MeanGreenMailbox aka TFLF's topic in Mean Green Football
This is probably true and we might be giving SL the benefit of the doubt by saying that we have some perception issues to overcome. I had never heard about SL being known as a recruiter before he came here. Frank Wilson obviously had that reputation. We made our decision and have to see it out, but I think a lot of us are concerned thus far. Then again we are also burnt by having a basketball coach known to be a recruiter and seeing how that's worked out, but I digress. -
Recruiting Folderol & Whatnot
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to MeanGreenMailbox aka TFLF's topic in Mean Green Football
This is fairly accurate. I sometimes wonder if UTSA's lack of football program history has helped them with the recruiting success they are having right now. I know Frank Wilson has brought in some based on old LSU relationships and whatnot, but wonder if sometimes no history is better than a bad history. I think most kids around this area have only heard about us as not being good in football. They don't know or probably care about the Joe Greene era or especially DD era. Yet, we have one of the lowest recruiting budgets in CUSA and haven't had much movement outside of DFW and surrounding areas. You have to remember how many Texas teams we were competing with in recruiting during those DD days. And even then, we were beating teams in a newly formed Sun Belt with teams still trying to build back up to Division 1 level respectability. A look at our non-conference record shows we weren't dominating outside of those parameters. Not to knock DD, he did a good job for us obviously. All this is to say I'm a big advocate of trying to find "diamonds in the rough" outside of DFW to build a team that can help our recruiting here at home by winning. UTSA's recruiting has been scattered about the state and surrounding states and it's showing in their recruiting ranking dominance. -
Most Improved Offense and Defense Scoring list
ChristopherRyanWilkes replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
If it's still Fine, QB play should improve. Besides his obvious arm strength issue the most glaring issue with him this season was his inability to make multiple reads. That's something that only gets better with time, and he got much needed experience last season. -
Two 20 minute halves and you get over 100 put up on you.
