Who we beat on the recruiting trail
bleedgreen4ever replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
It'll soon be easy to outrecruit SMU as we consistently beat them in games and eventually TCU as they remain a bottom feeder in the Big12 and we become a CUSA powerhouse like we were in the SB in the early 2000s. Believe! -
Benford terrible.

Really appreciate the love. One thing regarding academics, however. The high price tag associated with a school like NW is purely perception and not necessarily real value. UNT is a fine academic institution that in many fields can hang with the top elite schools. I am guessing he is drawn to study something where NW is ranked higher, so I get that. We certainly have programs ranked higher than them but if the opposite was the case, you can't blame him and wish him the best. If he doesn't end up liking it, I am sure our great coaching staff will have the doors open for him.
-
Doesn't look like we offered though...
-
Good luck to him and it's good school, yes. But UNT is just as good of a school. I'm sure he'll still have a great career. Now it's time to focus on our guys, those who are passionate about playing for the Mean Green.

Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
bleedgreen4ever replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Good for him...now at least the lengthy posts about this one recruiting target will end. We'll be just fine with our recruiting class. He's not the only DL who can produce. -
Ok, now I hope we stop talking about this kid because things were getting a little overboard about a single recruiting prospect. We'll be fine, in fact, our recruiting class is going to be one of the best in a long time.
-
??? First of all, the LB position at UNT is not among the top positions in most need. May not be the healthiest position, but we'll be fine with the replacements we have for the moment. Secondly, Jones and SMU "owned" UNT in recruiting? We have a pretty darn nice looking class this year and our coaching staff will develop them nicely. We are certainly doing something right as well.

That's not entirely true nowadays though. Our business school is certainly emerging and will continue to do so along with our engineering programs. Discovery park will take a little time to mature, but its potential is breathtaking. And we already have a few programs highly respected that are associated with "money-making" majors, such as accounting and hospitality management. However, what we need is a change in perception and tier 1 status along with other things, such as althletics, will cause a major increase in alumni donations and overall funding. We are slowly making the right moves and we just need the administration to continue working hard and us to continue educating people about what UNT is really like. -

And environmental science, public administration, city management and urban policy, health informatics, counselling, art & graphic design and a number of other top-ranked programs. We really are an underrated academic institution in terms of perception mainly because of our low endowment and low research funds...but that will continue to change and get better as people start realizing the high quality level produced at UNT for an affordable school. -

We definitely need a better entrance but much of that is driven by the crowd...and currently we have a long ways to go to get to that level at the start of our games. Most of our games with good attendance still had a poor showing at the start of the games with many showing up later. -

That's errounous percetion, though, that the "general" public makes. None of those schools are better academically nor more valuable. Not saying UNT is definitely better either. But we do have programs that are better and ranked higher and have to acknowledge that when comparing our institution to other more "well-known" institutions. So it all depends what he wants to study if his choice will be more driven by academics. -
Xavier Washington gets full offer from Northwestern
bleedgreen4ever replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I don't think the only reason why he should come to UNT over Northwestern is that he'll play earlier and the great family environment. And playing earlier may not even be true--he may very well play early at NU. But those are still good reasons, however let's not ever (especially nowadays) downplay UNT's strong academics. We don't know what he'll end up studying, and there are plenty of programs where UNT ranks higher than Northwestern. Both are good academically and he may be interested in a field we have more recognition in or vice-versa. Then there is the fact that his family would be closer to him if he chooses UNT. So, it's really hard to tell what is most important to him but we'll find out soon. We'll still be more than fine without him but he can definitely help make this recruiting class even more interesting. Excited about our future! -
Guys...everyone's talking as if they know for a fact that his UNT offer was still strong. We don't know if perhaps the UNT coaching staff already have their targets set and "stopped" recruiting him heavy as we are pretty healthy at his position and in more need in other positions. I have a feeling he actually did want to play for UNT but that it wasn't entirely up to him.

Partial UNT Visit list for Jan 24th
bleedgreen4ever replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Landing Chumley and Xavier to close the 2014 class would be huge. I think we have a scholarship left, but the coaching staff would figure something out if they both want to commit and the rest of our commits follow through.- 54 replies

Some are, actually, but I know most aren't. And I'm not worried or losing sleep, but usually their height is not bumped up by more than 3 inches. I'm not worried about his potential to be a solid player because of his height--just curious. -

How tall is coach Mac? Because Andrew Jones posted a pict of him standing next to coach Mac and he is significantly shorter, so I am thinking he can't be close to 6'1" as is stated here? http://instagram.com/p/jQML4XmlD0/ -
DL Xavier Washington 6-1, 238 4.85 Cedar Hill (offer)
bleedgreen4ever replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Yeah, although it seems I spoke a little too soon even though it does seem UH is a real strong contender. From what I am reading now, seems like UNT is still in the picture. Just get him in here with our coaching staff and if he's as smart as people on here are claiming, he'll realize how great of a fit UNT is for him. -

looks like he's committing to UH...which is too bad -
That is great considering UNLV had what…less than 2k fans probably. Mean Green Nation showed up..today couldn't have gone any better. The future is bright…the sleeping giant is starting to wake up!

Benford still has a lot to prove after the damage that started under his leadership, but a win like this is a start in the right direction IF he's able to come up with consistently solid wins the rest of the season. We'll see what happens, but congrats to him and the team for tonight's solid/important win. Let's now prepare for a football win tomorrow!
