To consider this I’d first want to know of a well established plan to get students there easily. A quality shuttle program from campus to the arena and back constantly running before/during/after the game. Also to know that we have lots of branding leverage. I don’t love the idea much and would rather build on campus or MGV. I’m sure there are other initiatives out there to cultivate a better relationship to the city with.

UNT Basketball Team honored by Denton City Council
tmjerm replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Sounds like the mayor wants it, but the University is foregoing it. -
I was thinking about this topic on my drive home today and I don’t disagree, with the important variable being met that we are INVESTING IN THE PROGRAM. That means, paying him and his staff well, NIL presence, facilities and generating attendance. So much of these hopes of keeping a good coach long term are OUR responsibility. Hard to blame Ross if he has a few good years and takes double or triple his salary elsewhere. The blame there again would not be on his morals, but our own short comings. It’s time for our alumni base, students, etc. to get serious about showing up and investing seriously into both basketball and football and we will have what we’ve longed for. In basketball’s case anyway, they’ve proven their worth, now it’s on us.

So great to have the Mayor out and hope the relationship with the City continues to improve. Our stance on parades is so lame. Loved seeing the players interviewed. Great day!

Felt/feel the same. It’s all getting so complicated with all this for us fans. The Drive would’ve never finished without him, but there’s still bitterness. I do feel TP is different bc he finished his original eligibility and won a very meaningful championship here so I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. One way or another, it sure is nice to have so much passion and hope and rabidness in our desire to compete around here. Not that the folks involved thus far in this thread aren’t always those things…but we are hungrier and expect more and that’s a beautiful thing.

I don’t disagree with much of what you said other than that his success and being from here helps our brand. That sucks I know. Rico Bussey. Never recovered from the knee injury at Cal and busted in Pittsburgh.

Breaking: Tylor Perry enters transfer portal
tmjerm replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Basketball
COVID years and NCAA getting weak on transfer rules and eligibility chaos. Everything turned into eligibility dementia. It really is just mania. Which is why what we’ve been able to do the last few years is incredible and also why it’s hard to be too mad at TP. The environment is insane and as a Program you just have to embrace it and catch the waves. The real solution is to stabilize eligibility and the portal and cut this chaos down and that means actual power from the governing body. Til then, we need to be constantly recruiting and always anticipating Sissokos in place of Ousmanes. -
I love the idea of New Mexico and other MWC teams. Nowadays rebuilding a team early you get some early losses that we did that can hurt you so you can’t schedule too low.
-
I love you, and I feel you Lifer. Joe played in a very, very different world and the values and mechanics and economics of collegiate athletics have changed enormously. I hate it too and I share your dream and vision of TP taking us on an NCAA run next year. Sadly (for us fans) things don’t work that way anymore and it’s time to reload and trust Ross to do it.

Breaking: Tylor Perry enters transfer portal
tmjerm replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I’m with you old timers about missing the good ole days…but these ain’t them and it’s one of those classic, don’t hate the player, hate the game situations. If you want to be mad, be mad at the NCAA or our fellow alumni who chose ignore reality or not to care. Asking Tylor to forgo $30,000 minimum to a long term reality of millions for his own life future in exchange for being loyal to our silly egos is antiquated emoting now. I totally get it. I miss true commitment. But this isn’t only pure capitalism now, it’s the wild Wild West and every man has to play his cards right to make the most of himself. Don’t judge TP with the standards of yesteryear. -

If you didn’t see this coming it was only cognitive dissonance. He paid his dues and then some. The chance to actually get financial freedom is available to him and he did not short change us for it. My guess is he’s going to Tech and it’s probably not a surprise to the inside at all. We will be ok and we can still love him and wish him a chance at a solid year there to up his draft stock, develop and get a real shot at the draft. Hard to imagine him playing like a Brunson in the NBA but I’d never count him out! -
Breaking: SOC DB Kerry Williams commits to North Texas

Daggum! We’re turning into SOC North! -
Well, Seth was fired so that’s an entirely different deal
-
Yeah he always made time to take pictures with fans etc. People are grasping at straws for something to be mad at. Our attendance was embarrassing but the $2M extra a year is what made this decision, not attendance. Certainly didn’t help but that’s the folks who WERENT there. He was all class to the ones who were.

Thank You to the North Texas Alumni Association

KFra is the MAN! -
Agree with everything you said 100% except the “allowed UNT to finish the NIT run”…Promise you Grant insisted on that and it was the right thing and my main argument is the word “allowed” is very ego fracturing and we don’t want to hear it. 😂 But all love brother, congrats on Grant and thanks for posting. Best of luck to the Raiders and GMG!

Unreal some of you. Grant is the picture of class.

Alliance seems to be the typical port but nothing scheduled inbound. Possibly DFW or maybe something not registered into Alliance.

I haven’t kept up this week but tend to agree. That fanbase has been through so much and I respect them and they are generally pretty classy. Only Blazer I ever hated was that 35 yr old defensive lineman they had but I guess when your football program is taken away you deserve to have some grace with some of that. I hope it’s a well contested game and look forward to our both moving on to greener pastures together. We both survived the grinder and here we go again!

I guess to each their own, but this isn’t a text message. You can actually formulate a thought and express it in the time it takes to do so.

Grant please listen... You are making a terrible mistake
tmjerm replied to Tom McKrackin's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I pray you’re right. My answer would be in order to play in the best basketball conference in the nation combined with the vagueness about the future but I’m honestly not super worried about it in terms of justness. In terms of likelihood I’d consider it highly likely. -

tmjerm replied to Tom McKrackin's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Because clearly Grant can put a team together, especially if TP goes with him. Let’s not be bitter. It’s good for us if they go far. -
Equating their fanbase with the media is misplaced. Tech is classless for other reasons than the news leak. That said, I think we have a lot in common with them with having chips on our shoulder and familiar enemies. To me, Lubbock and its people are actually beautiful and endearing. I’m mad about all this too but it’s a good thing for Grant, and I’ll wish them well.

If tonight is Grant's last game for the Green...

Love to hear it. Hopefully Ross keeps the build going and Eric makes Apogee a more fun place to be too. We have a lot to look forward to.
