  1. A man carrying an axe and breaking car windows was shot and killed at about 1 a.m. Sunday by a UNT police officer. University officials said the man “advanced on” the officer, resulting in the man’s death. The man, whose name has not yet been released, died at an unnamed area hospital about half an hour from the initial call, which was originally made to Denton police, but was picked up by UNT police, because the corner for Fry and Oak streets is within its jurisdiction. UNT spokeswoman Margarita Venegas said the UNT police, along with the Texas Rangers, are involved in the investigation, though Denton police responded to the crime scene. Venegas did not indulge speculation on how many shots were fired, or how close the man was to the officer when the shots began. When the rain began to pour early Sunday morning, police were still working the crime scene on the corner of Fry and Oak streets. Some bargoers leaving the Fry Street area ran through the rain to find police tape and officers telling them their cars may not be moved for hours, as investigators recover details. “It could be hours,” one officer said. Police were seen in the area as late as 4 a.m. Next to her roommate along Oak Street stood Ashley Jones, a UNT student who said she knew the man who police are said to have killed. She said the suspect was a UNT student, but that has not been confirmed by the university. View the full article

  11. “You can see the chemistry,” Benford said. “They’re like brothers. They set the tone for the team and control the ball.” The backcourt duo has not only produced quality numbers, but have also paved the way for other players to shine on the court. Six players on the North Texas roster are averaging over 10 points per contest, a statistic that highlights the team’s ability to share the basketball. Additionally, the Mean Green is shooting 55.4 percent from beyond the arc and 43.6 percent from the field. That indicates the team is not only knocking down its shots, but getting good looks as well. Reese said the offensive success the team has experienced should be credited to the entire team and its willingness to find the open man. “We’re getting a lot of assists. I’m not coming down and looking for my shot,” Reese said. “We’re not forcing the issue, and we’re getting the ball and the defense moving.” View the full article

  14. Call it Convention Center 2.0. The Denton City Council approved Tuesday night a maximum 25-year, $54 million incentive package for a new convention center. The deal brings the center along with a full-service hotel and restaurant to the Rayzor Ranch Town Center development, likely by 2018. In many ways, the project resembles a deal the city abandoned last year. O’Reilly Hospitality Management and its investment partners plan a 300-room Embassy Suites hotel, a Houlihan’s restaurant and a 70,000-square-foot convention center. But in other key ways, Tuesday’s deal was different. This time, taxpayers won’t own the convention center or pay for its construction with bond money. Those differences were enough to win over Mayor Chris Watts, who led the charge against the original deal in 2014. Council members Kevin Roden, Joey Hawkins, Dalton Gregory and Greg Johnson also said they were happy to support the new package, which rebates tax money to a fully private venture based on its economic performance.
