  1. Yes, I did. Ray was in my original (to be) graduating class of 1952. I saw him play in 49 and 50 but went into the service and missed the 51 (his last) season. At the time, I considered him the fastest human in a football uniform. He was a tenth of a second off of the world's record for the 100 yard dash in 1949. He was very good playing running back but his forte became wide receiver. Ray averaged nearly 20 yards per catch in the pro's and a touchdown every fifth catch. It's ironic that Ray Renfro was 33rd on the all-time Cleveland Brown's list and he wore #33 at North Texas.
  2. While I don't disagree with the ranking system in general, and I like the fact that 24/7 has incorporated other systems into a composite, listing the total team numbers only tells a part of the story. The team totals (as ranked) include all on scholarship and are okay as far as the current situation. But, the number included in the total varied greatly, from a high of 85 to a low of 34. I recaluculated the total value based on the number on scholarship with the following results: Marshall 496.22 67 7.406 North Texas 354.84 52 6.824 Southern Miss 447.72 66 6.784 Louisiana Tech 458.63 69 6.647 UTEP 222.26 34 6.537 FAU 417.45 64 6.523 Middle Tenn 429.04 70 6.129 Old Dominion 374.57 65 5.763 W Kentucky 407.02 71 5.733 Charlotte 342.20 60 5.703 FIU 373.67 71 5.263 Rice 389.65 76 5.127 UTSA 397.95 85 4.682 It appears that we are doing well on a per player basis currently and I would hope that this coaching staff can develop these "high 2-star" players into something more elite.

  4. I like the chrome helmet also; especially with a green jersey. But, the original post had to do with the #28 on the back of the helmet (which I missed). That retired number belongs to Abner Haynes. The first thing that I thought of was that Abner had passed away. I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened or it's the best kept secret in the country. I'm reasonably sure that a player from 2015 was killed in a car wreck but he wasn't wearing 28.
  5. I believe that the AAC (Navy), the MWC (Hawaii) and the Sun Belt (UALR, UTA) are the only FBS conferences that allow members the option to not have to compete in the every revenue sport.
  6. I believe that the buyout on Seth's contract is a little north of four million dollars. Even with all of their money I doubt that SMU would spend that on a coach with (at best) a 7-6 record as a FBS head coach. Besides, if Littrell is as good as I think that he will be he'll have a P5 offer within a couple of years. Truthfully, I don't look for Morris to go anywhere anytime soon. He's well-paid, in Texas, and is accumulating some pretty impressive talent at SMU.
  7. I think that I'll wait for Tyler Maryak to post to see how it stacks up with my thoughts. Since Tyler hit the exact spread (18 points) last week, I bow to that. He did, however, miss the exact score four points low on both North Texas and Army. Still, that was eerie with so many factors involved. With no wind or wet ball involved, Trevor could hit a field goal or two and Mason another TD or two. I'm looking to more scoring than last week but if our defense continues to improve it could move my point spread a little more. UTSA is a Jekyl and Hyde team but I believe that they'll give a maximum effort Saturday. I believe that UNT will win but I'm just not capable of determining by how much at this time.
  8. To further explain...SOW stands for Son Of Worm; the (Flying) Worm being the old stylized eagle initiated during the Hayden Fry era of the early 70s.
  9. If Vizza hadn't left when he did, he'd be another concussion looking for a place to happen. Our o-line was so bad I don't blame anyone that had to line up behind them for leaving. It seems as if Riley had to leave here on a gurney. The quarterback during that era was designated tackling dummy. I don't like quitters either but to stay under those circumstances is idiotic.
  10. It's true that Wilson only averages just over 15 carries a game but he is averaging about 5.7 yards per carry over his career. Barring injury (bite my tongue), and extrapolating that out over the remaining games, he would surpass Wilburn and Thomas on the all-time list. I don't know that he could surpass Cobbs or Dunbar even if we are lucky enough to be in two division championships and two bowl games before he hangs them up but if he keeps improving it is possible.
  11. I don't care for the SOW that's lost its head under the facemask. A little smaller would be better with white on green and green on white. I'd still like to see a superimposed NT that is similar to the one used by the Alumni Association.
  12. Rick Shaw was my all time favorite name too, but don't look at his stats. His first game was against BYU...the one where we got drubbed in the Cotton Bowl. That may have been his best game. He won four games in two years. His last win was the only one that season, a two point win over Cincinnati. It wasn't all his fault, though. He didn't have much talent around him. Rod Rust was a very good coach but a terrible recruiter. Rod's first three years here, with mostly Odus Mitchell recruits, he lost only six games. His next three years he was 7-26 and Rick was the quarterback the last two years with a record of 4-18. He only completed about 30% of his passes.
  13. Well, if you don't want to give credit to RV or Mac give it to Cinnamon Sheffield. She's probably the driving force behind the great APR.
  14. I'm pretty sure that family members are an exception. Maybe even friends of the family if they've known him since he was small (and especially if they have the parents' permission).
  15. Sympathy and prayers Tyler, to you and your family.
  16. Richard Gill was a linebacker on the varsity from Woodville. As I recall, he died on the operating table as they were trying to keep a blood clot from reaching his heart or lungs. The surgery took place at the old Flow Memorial Hospital on Scripture Street. I believe that the anesthesia had something to do with making it difficult to save him. A very tragic loss as the surgery was not presumed to be serious. Gill was an all-MVC linebacker for two years and an outstanding player. If I don't have my years mixed up, only sophomores, juniors and seniors played on the varsity at that time so it's possible that Richard might have played running back as a freshman and wore the number 33 because Ray Renfro's number had not been retired at that time. I agree with drex, there has only been one Richard Gill that played at North Texas so they are the same player.
  17. There won't be much Marshall green this week since their jerseys (at least) will be white.
  18. It was reported early as a strained ACL and I haven't read anything different. Supposedly he was to be out 2-3 weeks.
  19. greenville 28 hooterville 14
  20. You're right of course. But if he does succeed we'll all become Fine-atics.
  21. Superfine can mean of unusual quality.
  22. It looks like she may have picked up some of her dad's wit. I like.
  23. North Texas 13 Florida 28
