Canales Vs. The High School Todds
GrayEagle replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
Is there as big of a turnover in ADs as there is in coaches? -
This thread has been beat to death and I'll not take it further except to contest your last statement. The FAU win is Dodges's fourth conference win (WKU twice, ULM and FAU). The first WKU win came when they were provisional members so that doesn't count. Who cares about the coaching comparison? Both had horrible coaching records and unless Dodge either wins seven or gets a conference championship with six wins I think that he should be gone.

I agree to a point (pun intended?) but since there are more guards than big men we need to concentrate on them except for the very elite points and shooters. The only outstanding big man, Odufwa, will be a senior. Unless Holmen develops there is little in the way of replacements in the front court. Edwards may prove himself but I'm not all that hopeful. We need the Yorks, Greens and Robinsons in the early going because a good, big man is harder to find. I think that we are overbalanced with guards so it would seem appropriate to me to change the backcourt/frontcourt ratio. We need rebounders and defenders. Just my opinion.

My guess is that one spoke of football members and the other of all eleven members. Denver has an athletic budget of more than $24 million which I believe is the largest in the Sun Belt.

What I think greenqueen may have meant (at least it fits my feelings) is that some of the prayer references are blasphemous. Why do it?

Nm Lobos To Fire Coach & Hire Mike Leach
GrayEagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Pretty much agree with the second part of your statement but I have a much different opinion on how we hired DD. Dickey had eight years experience as an OC. Four years were at Memphis, three at UTEP and one at SMU. His combined record as an Offensive Coordinator...27-61-2. He had two winning seasons, both at 6-5 and a .500 season. The rest were 3 wins, two wins, and one win, hardly conducive to being hired at an FBS school. But, Darrell Dickey was a Kansas State quarterback under his dad. Our AD Helwig was a KSU grad and jumped on the chance to hire a fellow alumnus. I will always believe that being Jim Dickey's son was the primary reason for DD's hiring. The 6-5 record at SMU did soften the criticism of hiring Darrell Dickey. -
I don't know if his response was factual or opinion but I heartily agree that it's more about who said it than what was actually said. There were some points that seeped through a rather ordinary report. This coaching staff must produce or be gone. Don't waste money trying to advertise heavily in Dallas or Fort Worth. Start in Denton and Denton County and expand outwards. Win, especially in football. Increase basketball attendance. Begin a baseball program ASAP. Our very large number of alumni is a plus and most of them are under 50. The new stadium can be a magnificent tool to link the university and the community. Start building tradition now. Dominate the Sun Belt Conference. Did I mention win?

This game is really where the rubber meets the road. If they are capable of winning seven games then they are capable of beating FAU. This is the game where maximum effort is a must. Coaches must utilize their strengths. Backups must step up and do their best to become the equal of the guy that was playing ahead of them. It's their chance to shine. The law of averages should say that there won't be any more serious injuries so don't be apprehensive. This should never have come down to where injuries is an excuse for losing this year. If this team isn't motivated for this game then the coaching staff won't ever be able to do it. Just PLEASE, don't give up a score in the first few minutes of the game as has happened in the last three.

Is that about football or basketball?

Totally agree with TFLF. We can't win playing UT in Austin even when we win.
-
Your original post said TOTAL allegiance. He does like the University of North Texas and has been back a number of times. His sons all played here.
-
The SMU recruit was Hagar from SA Alamo Heights. The North Texas recruit was Hager and was from Austin Westlake.
-
According to Vito and Phillips the Casper WY guard is the one that has visited North Texas. His statistics aren't overwhelming but he seemed to come on really well late in the season. I believe that he scored 34 in one of the playoff games. He is supposedly being eyed as a sixth man.

I thought Iowa was a 2 for 1.

Perfect! Every once in a while I could begin to understand Todge Rodge only to be led back to ranting and raving similar to Baghdad Bob. I'm still trying to figure out who was more factual.

Not even if Denver played football.

For every Kevin Sumlin there are two Chuck Longs so we need to pare the odds as much as we can. Either of the Bowdens would be a great choice because not only have they done it on their own they also have their dad's great reputation and name identity. Even though it's unlikely that either has recruited in Texas the Bowden name would draw some great prospects. A Bowden would increase ticket sales and MGC membership and pay for itself in rather short order. A proven name can easily be sold to the Metroplex and alumni whereas they may take a wait and see attitude with a coordinator. If we had a fine recent history then I'd go for the rising star but our back's to the wall and in my opinion only a proven name can bail us out.

Yes, if we change our offensive style then James Hamilton might well be a top candidate. His main drawback is height. He definitely has the speed and apparently an effective arm. He did an outstanding job at Cedar Hill. If we opt to go that route we might also consider Darius Carey. He had a good completion rate and was the leading runner among quarterbacks in the New Orleans area as a senior. Either might be better than our present alternatives but do we have the coaches for that style?

Well, by definition it diminishes them as supporters since part of the support is financial. Besides, those that give the most are historically better members (fans). When you give more of your money, time, whatever to an organization you are far more likely to perpetuate that entity than the occasional attendee. It works for churches, service clubs and most other organizations. So, if it doesn't make you a better member it certainly does make you a more valuable member. Personally, I'm also more prone to listen to a person who financially supports something than to the casual critic. Anyone can criticize, especially when it costs them nothing.

Tobi's Post Game Offensive Assessment
GrayEagle replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm not going to argue with that assessment since I agree with almost all of it. Whether they like it or not, Chase Baine needs to start the reps with the first unit. Riley looked tentative Saturday, not at all like the veteran that he is. Furthermore, his arm is now a detriment and he is prone to fumble. So Baine it is. The first few games it won't be pretty but in the final analysis I think that he'll do a servicable job. I agree also that the new formations have helped take away Dunbar as a breakaway runner. But, he is also a very good receiver and if he can get away from the area that is stacked to defend him he could still do a lot of damage. Canales is going to have to adjust to a different style for the good of the team. He should be experienced enough that he can come up with a few wrinkles to adapt to the personnel that he has and can best utilize their talents. It won't be easy to unlearn the thinking that you have been comfortable with for a new system but I think that he has to try. -
In concept, I don't have a problem with your premise but most of your list are walk-ons among those who have not played. Noble red-shirted last year so he would be good to go ahead and play. At the rate we are losing quarterbacks Dodson may have to play out of necessity. Ditto at center with Y'Barbo. Sashington is out for the year anyway. Mainly you would be protecting Dunham, Hawkins and Johnson. I'm good with those, especially Johnson, who I see as a potential four-year starter.
