  1. He's got to have some talent to build on unless we want another four years to get enough FBS talent to have depth.
  2. I don't think that anyone leaves until the coach is selected and his staff is known. If the players feel that winning is imminent then I think that they stay to enjoy the new facilities. The only other name that comes quickly to mind is Zach Olen. He seems to have gotten his act together and good kickers are a must. All of the Metroplex players, especially, should love to show off the new stadium to their parents, relatives and friends.
  3. It was the Big East Conference. He was around .500 in conference but was terrific on OOC games. I don't think that the Sun Belt will be near as strong as the Big East was.
  4. There's a fact that just got in your way. TCU sold out one game this year (Baylor). They have done better in attendance but they are not selling out. Their stadium has a capacity of 44,358 and the other three home games have drawn 40,416, 38,081, and 37,117.
  5. My answers would be no and no in that order.
  6. Coach Fran has done a lot of good things in his coaching career. He has been a winner everywhere he has coached except New Mexico. But, he took a Lobo team that had three winning seasons in the last twenty before his arrival and had three winning seasons in his six there. His last season he was 9-4 which is why TCU hired him. He had very good records at TCU and Alabama. He had problems at A&M, where he barely won in spite of highly rated recruiting classes. He also had the newsletter scandal but he also donated $1 million to the Aggies for an indoor practice facility to offset the $37 thousand that he made from the newsletter. If I knew that Coach Fran could get his son as his DC, he'd be my favorite candidate. He has proven multiple times that he can build winners and I believe that he would do that here.
  7. Uhh...I believe that the word is "onus." Then again, the way that some seem to feel about RV maybe it should be an a.
  8. Boise State couldn't even become Boise State in this day and time. Coach selection, scheduling, conference membership, and state/local support all combined at the right time to help them catch lightning in a bottle.
  9. Actually, he's been accused of mistreating a player...singular. In his thirteen years at South Florida he's likely been exposed to the antics of maybe 1,500 players and there has been only one malfeasance that has surfaced publicly. What he did was wrong and although it occasionally happens, getting physical with players should never be condoned although you and I know that there are some that will provoke others. Since the circumstances haven't really gone public I don't know whether there was provocation in this case or not. The absolute worst at getting physical with his players was Woody Hayes. Yet, for a long period of time he seemed to recruit some of the best players in the country; players that were all-Americans and Heisman Trophy winners. Someone's sons played (and played well) for Woody. No one is perfect. The coach was fired and hopefully learned his lesson. He could coach another thirteen years and it not happen again. If it does, he should know that he likely won't get another chance at a third strike.
  10. If it's talent evaluation then we might as well get rid of Rivals, Scout and the other evaluators of talent because they also don't have a clue. There is no Sun Belt team that continually gets substantially higher rated players than the other teams. Troy appears to because of the number that they offer but we can't be sure how many (and the quality) of their recruiting class actually attend Troy University. Sorry, that theory might work when getting beat by Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson, et al but not when dominated by Belt teams. That would lie directly at the feet of the coaches.
  11. Dennis Franchione - Former Texas A&M HC (also TCU, Alabama, N Mex) Terry Bowden - N. Alabama HC (former Auburn HC) Glen Mason - Former Minnesota HC John L. Smith - Former Michigan State HC (also Louisville,Utah St) Don Carthel - West Texas A&M HC There have been others mentioned but these are considered proven winners.
  12. He's not my cup of tea. He's been here before and I seriously doubt that he's interested in coming back. He had very good success at Tulsa but fell flat at Louisville after inheriting a top-rated team.
  13. My understanding was that all state jobs had to be posted for 30 days so that any applicants would have time to submit their letter. I know that it's been done in the past but I don't know if it is an official requirement.
  14. 1. I'd like to see Todd Dodge reassigned at the end of the season for the remainder of his contract. Some non-demeaning job where he could be a help. He has been a good ambassador for the university. 2. Assuming the job requires a 30-day notice, post the head coach position next week. That way the new coach could have his staff in place shortly after the end of the season. 3. Give playing time to all sophomores and juniors. Grade them under actual playing conditions. In some cases it might be only a series or two but where there are seniors at that position give them a lot if warranted. I would hope that would be especially true for offensive and defensive linemen. 4. Giveaway merchandise by drawing at the Fouts Field Finale. I'd like to see a full house (or as near as possible) to show the Denton-Dallas-Fort Worth area and other conferences that we can support our team.
  15. I don't think that Dodge is willing to part with $200,000 just to show how honorable he is.
  16. Did you stay in the parking lot for the entire time? If so, how many would you estimate did the same?
  17. Turner Gill is a nice guy. He had one winning season at Buffalo (8-6).
  18. It's definitely not all about the injuries. They have played a part in how poorly this team has fared but there are too many gaffes from poor coaching to warrant continuing this madness another year. This team (and Dodge's previous teams) simply do not know how to win. They blow leads and get penalties at the most inopportune times. They say that their goal is to win the turnover battle but we've seen little, if any, effort to force turnovers. Momentum never seems to work for them. The team is too undisciplined. I have real concerns about the playing time for some players and lack of it for others but I don't really want to air that beef in public. The season is lost anyway so why not see how some of the backups function under game conditions?
  19. I just got home from the game as well and there was a steady stream out when I left after the halftime show. Even Joe Greene left after the half. I couldn't take it any longer. It may be the poorest effort by the Mean Green in recent memory. Had we been playing Kansas State it would have been 60-0 at the half. I understand the injuries but our offensive line, with four of the original starting five, has been manhandled. I'm shocked that Dunbar, Baine and others didn't get seriously hurt. My condolences to Will Atterberry who wasn't quite so lucky.
  20. My second colleges are quite a bit below North Texas now but at one time I followed them closely. UT - My oldest daughter has a degree from there (North Texas doesn't offer pharmacy) and I was really a fan until '88. After the robbery at Austin, my respect for them fell a lot. SMU - Yes, SMU. I was a couple of years behind Doak Walker and admired what he was able to accomplish with his gift. It was a gift because he didn't really have size or speed, just ability. Later, Don Meredith was another folk hero and kept my interest up. They dropped like a rock in my esteem after the death penalty but that was due to a few individuals, not the entire university. It seems to me that most of the snobbery developed after the scandal. LSU - Although I was born in Texas (Port Arthur), I spent most of my adolescent years in Louisiana (DeRidder...same home town as Johnny Jones). LSU was Louisiana education (and football) so it was a natural for me that I aspired to go there. I had an aunt in Denton (husband taught at TWU) and fell in love with the place after visiting there and my passion for LSU vanished.
  21. Per Rivals, he is interested in 10 schools...NT is not one of them.
  22. Sorry, I also missed the post. Have a belated happy birthday, Rick.
  23. Just so Todd operates the chainsaw and not one of our players. At our rate, we'd lose the chainsaw operator and a couple of bystanders to an accident each week that we tried that. That wouldn't even count the burns which could also be season-ending.
  24. My thoughts are a three guard offense of Johnson at point, Josh at 2 and Tristan at 3. We basically have two power forwards although we can call one a 5. If that's the case, make George the center. I would guess that Hogans would be the four but he's not much of a scorer. Edwards wasn't much of a scorer in JC ranks either. If Holmen can play with his back to the basket then he might also be a strong candidate. I see Shorter as the first one off of the bench.
  25. I think what you are seeing is the actual attendance plus the season tickets sold to those not in attendance.
