PlummMeanGreen's post in Where's the UNT offer? was marked as the answer
This (at present) non-offer to a great & loyal alum's kin just adds to our reputation as a school whose mindset since 1982 when the 'un-doing of all things Fry began & our motto became "we po' but proud" (being po').
Am I pissed with what has been the squandering of our athletic program my entire adult life from the wrongful hiring (and keeping too long on the payroll) of obvious D2 employees parading around as D1 "would be's?" Damn right I (and others) are pissed! You who have never seen as much as 4 winning seasons in a row should be twice as pissed.

Their names again or would that create bad karma to say them??
Methinks we will flip some more recruits we couldn't talk to before the bowl among many reasons but especially because our fans & alums showed DFW, Texas & the ESPN TV audience that we give a damn about this football program & its future......going forward at the end of the day. ?

PlummMeanGreen's post in Denton Record Chronicle was marked as the answer
Yes, the DRC will have a very nice tabloid on North Texas & the HOD Bowl game 2 days before the bowl game. Actually.....good timing !
The FW Star Telegram with their on again/off again coverage of North Texas has been slim with their coverage, but (of course) their sports staff is so much slimmer than it used to be due to the internet I suppose.

PS: We are getting good coverage on GMG.com, though, and its membership is world-wide. {:>)

Well, Phil, even a blind hog finds an acorn? I actually thought I had already posted this years ago on GMG.com, but since turning age 39 for the 27'th year in a row on Thanksgiving Day the memory seems to be fading (some). How's your cousin Guido in Sicily these days? I might have a job for him. (just kiddin')
See ya' at the HOD Bowl game Tuesday week!

PlummMeanGreen's post in Navy against Army Game Discussion - please particpate with me was marked as the answer
That national televised event yesterday with many rich, famous & high ranking politicians in attendance absolutely does raise the profile of our bowl game.
Now there will be many more Cadets & former Cadets show up at the Cotton Bowl stadium to support their team that "only" broke a 15 yr losing streak to Navy.
When we hosted Texas A & M at Texas Stadium years ago I looked around at the Mean Green side & saw fans who I knew that I'd never seen in the 70's at Fouts who I guess wanted to be seen at that "happening" event. I think that may now happen (again) at the HOD Bowl game but what the hell...there is room for all no matter any fans reasons to be there. Some may even stick with our program. It should be fun for all.

PlummMeanGreen's post in Who are we pulling for today? was marked as the answer
Just Scattershootin' From The Hip:
MWC, folks..........W--I--T's (The above picture of an empty stadium for a Championship game is pitiful & tells us what the future of CUSA aka SBC 2.0 is really all about & makes MWC make even more sense).
Rice alums & fans are ready to make this MWC happen. I spoke to a Rice alum about this yesterday--he got excited about the possibility. (My eye doctor is also a Rice alum). Even their Parliament fan forum board has support for MWC. They see little long term upside with CUSA/SBC 2.0.
Yet........would Prez' Smatresk, Wren Baker & our BOR's want to at least explore this MWC thing? Like maybe even showing up on the office doorsteps of the MWC Commish' next Monday? LOL!
The MWC Commish' has mentioned the, uh, .....Tex-4 > > > > (Rice, UNT, UTEP & UTSA) .......as their "Texas option." This kind of conference membership would be the 2'nd most important thing to happen for our school since the construction of Apogee Stadium).
Fact is.........with recent media noise suggesting the AAC could lose possible members in the East you can bet your sweet bippy that UH and SMU would (with reckless abandon) pursue the Mountain West Conference in a NY minute & that another reason our leaders need to be proactive with this if there is even a crease of light for this to happen.
Just saying'...
GMG
For those of us who've been around all this for going on 40 years to a half a century you do come up with (most times) some semblance of a balanced perspective as it relates to where we've been and where we really believe we can go.
If your standing still in today's NCAA you are most likely going backwards & (sadly) that school will eventually reap the rewards for doing such.

Agree!
Never dreamed we'd have 5 wins this season based on last year, but we do have an upwardly bound young coaching staff who cannot afford to allow UNT to be their last stop. It's a win-win for all.

PlummMeanGreen's post in G5 Conference Realignment was marked as the answer
North Texas "only" move up is the MWC. We would get the same treatment from UH (and SMU) has from the Big 12 if we were to apply for the AAC. They'd say North "WHO?"
Some things are just written in concrete in our glorious Lone Star State & pecking order as it began with the old Southwest Conference seems to be one of those things written in concrete. It's a vicious cycle that is so hard to break. If we'd had about a 20 season in a row winning streak and sold out each game it would still be difficult IMHO.
Again: The Mountain West Conference is our best move up; otherwise, all these other G-5 conference scenarios are lateral moves or in some cases maybe even a drop down.
Only way the MWC would make sense (and cents) is if we had almost all the CUSA West move into that league. If they want a Texas presence in the MWC that would sure give it to them.

PlummMeanGreen's post in No hating on Fine was marked as the answer
Manifesto Time!
Mason is just Fine. He is relentless with the way he just keeps on coming back. ➡️ We don't have to spend the next 3 years "slowly" developing a QB project & hope it works out. ✳️ WE HAVE A QB, FOLKS, DON'T KNOCK IT--ENJOY IT! A few good breaks tonight, better officiating & that game is a toss up. Some pick MUTS to win it all, folks.
Their team speed on both sides of the ball ate us up.
One perspective mentioned previously:
My Junior year (1975) we thought we had a winner. It was future College Football Hall of Famer Hayden Fry's 3'rd year at North Texas & things were really looking up. Our season opener was against the Oklahoma State Cowboys & they slobber-knocked us 60 something to 7. It was a demoralizing loss, yet did that team mail it in after that massacre? No, later that season they'd beat Bill Yeoman's U of Houston Cougars 28-0 & then beat a 6 & 5 Tennessee Volunteers team 14-7--arguably still our biggest all time win since the SEC UT Vols would have been a bowl team if there'd been as many bowls as present day; of course, so would the Mean Green have been in a 1975 bowl, too. Fry said he'd stayed at North Texas had his better teams been rewarded with bowl invites--we just had Fry 20 years too early at UNT with all the bowls we have now.
✳️Note: North Texas' win over the Vols cost HFC Bill Battle his job, but he turned his lemons into lemonade when he became an entrepreneur & started College Licensing whose label can be seen on all NCAA sportswear. Maybe he should have thanked us? LOL!
GMG!
Part 2: Just need to recruit like there's no tomorrow. Why not--everyone else does. It makes me ill that our previous staff didn't recruit better classes having the best damn stadium in Conference-USA to recruit toward & the fact that UNT by many would be considered an easy sell. Fry could sell a comb to a bald-headed man or a refrigerator to an Eskimo. He lifted our school out of the "teachers college" designation more than anyone prior at the chagrin of some of the older Denton nestors who wanted to keep it business as usual or...DON'T ROCK OUR SWEET SITUATION WITH "OUR" 2 UNIVERSITIES & COZY LITTLE DEAL WE HAVE UP HERE. (Well, Fry sorta' did).
The word for the McCarney staff is ......SQUANDERED.

Pulled this video up on August 31'st & got all inspired after watching it.
If America-coast coast had families like the 2 from Locust Grove who raised these 2 Mean Green freshmen we'd have a better nation.
To be admired are the ones who don't have such a solid home life but who over-come that just the same.

✳️ SMALL STEPS--BUT MEANINGFUL SMALL STEPS WITH SHORT TERM--LONG TERM PURPOSE...
DJ'ed an event earlier in the evening but got in on half of the 4'th quarter & the 2 exciting over-times. How's 'bout that last exciting game-ending play of which the Rice Owls only needed mere inches to go toward getting a tie keeping the overtime going & then sudddenly ???
NORTH...TEXAS...WINS!
✳️ Yes, it's one game, but as a fan its been awhile recalling a game that felt so satisfying to win & one I feel was so important a win for this coaching staff, a young developing team & our entire football program moving forward.
✳️ We have some tough CUSA opponents for the balance of the season beginning with MTSU at Apogee this next Saturday, but I believe we as proud North Texas Exes & Mean Green fans can now agree we are seeing a solid foundation being laid (across the board) the way we've wanted & waited so many years.
✳️ Look forward to seeing many of you (again) this Saturday at amazing Apogee as we all continue to see our work in progress.
? For U of North Texas Greenbloods I feel our journey with this group will be as exciting for what I really feel will be a loftier than ever destination for Mean Green football, but still & to keep perspective---we take small meaningful steps.

PlummMeanGreen's post in MWC: Expansion This Year? was marked as the answer
A Manifesto of Sorts??
Agree, Jack.
The MWC needs Top 10 TV markets & probably sooner than later. We can't bring a perennial winner to the MWC, but we can bring the 4'th ranked TV market in America of which UNT has (by far) the largest enrollment/area alumnus combo than any school around.
Who do you like at Apogee? UNT vs FIU, FAU, MTSU, Old Dominion, Charlotte, etc, or UNT vs Boise, San Diego St., Air Force, Colorado St. (& other more established & occasional fixtures in Top 25 polls? ✳️ Some might call this a no-brainier, but others who can never project a winning UNT program will be content with the same old thing & world class tail-gating.
UNT only 2 years ago showed MWC officials what a winning Mean Green football product can do & did all that with much fanfare at the HOD Bowl game. Hellsbells, they "only" saw our greatest contingency of Mean Green fans at the venerable Cotton Bowl Stadium in UNT history! Do not think this was all un-noticed.
Yes, it would also be nice to have the 4 CUSA Texas schools as a MWC package deal & to keep those Lone Star State budding rivalries in tact.
*Time zone kick-off concerns can be worked out if this is important enough to MWC officials to make this all happen. Like the Egyptians say: Where there's a wheel--there's a way."?
*Look at what non-stop TV coverage has already done fo kick-off times coast-to-coast & even with 11:00 AM kick-offs for those who'll bend their schedules to accommodate TV?
*Let's also face the blatant fact that CUSA will continue to look more like Sun Belt Conference 2.0, too, which will only keep us quagmired for just about forever. ➡️ Any of those schools would jump at the same opportunity to move up if they could & like Barry Goldwater once said in his campagin: "In your heart you know I'm right." (Of course, he did get slobber-knocked by Lyndon, now didn't he)?
Still....look at the names of MWC schools? Beat a few of their better known football schools & "WALA"--can you say Top 25 football rankings? Basketball? Same thing.
Of course, as always on this fan's message board, we're projecting & speculating, but we're also trying to create a better future for all of ours favorite school in light of the ever-changing NCAA environment.
➡️ On this subject, do keep your eyes on UT & OU's future "possible" conference moves. IMHO, they will not be permanent fixtures in a revised Big 12 & TAMU will be their model on that subject.

PlummMeanGreen's post in Hey morons, this is why you need a QB that can throw the forward pass was marked as the answer
Another 3 or 4 year development of one Mean Green QB at dear ol' alma mater----again?
Funny how it took La Tech only 1 off season to find an impact QB. This former Hawkeye from UI didn't even play with the Dog's in the Spring according to CBS broadcaster.
I don't understand why we have such a difficult time recruiting a true "light em' up" impact "brand new on the team" QB in Denton--never have.
DW should start the 2'nd half but he won't because we have to stick with the 3 to 4 year development QB plan. This season could be a long one but
haven't we seen 3 steps forward but 5 back before in Denton? Rest of the CUSA schedule at this point looks ominous. The SMU team we drubbed was the worst
one I'd seen with the first SMU team I saw which was at the 1968 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl when Fry was the Mustang's coach. I don't think SMU's first team even right after their DP was as bad
as the one we saw last week. So....things could be worse for us, right?
We can hope and wish that some QB we have on this team catches lightning because 1 first down in the first half in this game is not going to cut the mustard.
Looks like our offensive line are wearing the blue tonight. Seriously, ours cannot break one of our RB's at this junction (half time)
Oh well....I don't mind eatin' crow at any time when it comes to the Mean Green.

I was one of the 12, Jack. Not "Disciples" but Mean Green fans who saw T.G. Sheppard, Kitty Wells, Carl Perkins (who wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" a very bad comedian named Elmer Phud-pucker (truly was his name) and his humor was very blue.
Will never forget the expression T.G. Sheppard had on his face when he came out on stage seeing so few fans. T.G. even had a big hit at the time called "Party Time."
I swore after that last Cotton Bowl game in 1981 that I'd never go back to Fair Park but guess I lied because I (along with a cast of tens of thousands) will be there supporting the Mean Green of North Texas on New Years Day!

Another YouTube look at Brock Bergland at bottom of page.
Do you really completely lose all the skills that you will see in this video?
Coach Canales is obviously key to this kid's development of which he succeeds. Personally, I
think he is the starter by mid season this next Fall.
I have no problem with our having 3 QB's. North Texas beat the Tennessee Volunteers over n Knoxville with a 3'rd string QB back in the day.
Time will tell but I do like BB's accuracy in the video and his ability to scramble. We can all hope and if the QB is still DT..so be it; whoever gets the job done.
I've changed to 7 or 8 wins this Fall which differs from my original 6 or 7 wins prediction. This is if all our North Texas players with NCAA FBS potential realize that potential. We may also need for a few other teams to have bad games and/or down years for us to get to 7 or 8. We will not have had enough consecutive winning seasons for our team to get Top 25 consideration, but that should still be an eventual goal for Mean Green football.
2013 Mean Green Football Schedule
Aug 31 Idaho (1-11).........................W...............Home season opener at "OUR" house! Also, a mismatch of talent with the 2 teams.
Sep 7 at Ohio (9-4) .........................L................Dog gone those first part of the season road game--yet a close game.
Sep 14 Ball State (9-4)....................W...............Again, they will be in "OUR" house and all our transfers and new faces begin to show their pedigree
Sep 21 at Georgia (12-2).................L................Someone take some good close-up pics of their sideline hedges.
Sep 28 bye
Oct 5 at Tulane (2-10)*....................W...............Brock Bergland takes over as 1'st string QB & lights it up in the Super Dome!
Oct 12 Middle Tennessee (8-4)*.....W................A typical MUTS/UNT shootout but being a home game before our fans will make a big difference here
Oct 19 at Louisiana Tech (9-3)*......W.................the Dawgs just lost too many seniors & starters from last Fall which was cause for Dikes to leave for Cal.
Oct 26 at Southern Miss. (0-12)*.....L.................a close road loss for the Mean Green
Nov 2 Rice (7-6)*.............................W................MG fans gets first ever look at the MOB and it's another home game win for the Mean Green.
Nov 9 UTEP (3-9)............................W................Last time we played the Miners in Denton it was a near sellout crowd--UTEP brings many fans to Apogee.
Nov 16 bye
Nov 23 UTSA (8-4)*.........................W..............Welcome to Mean Green Country, Road-Runners and an entire NCAA FBS schedule + a bye week to heal.
Nov 30 at Tulsa (11-3).....................L...............A close game, though.
Last time I saw North Texas beat Tulsa was on Houston ABC-TV affilate Channel 13 in ABC-TV's NCAA College Football's regional game of the week back in 1968; in fact, that is the last Mean Green win over the Golden 'Canes. Few (if any) in the new CUSA ever had such an exclusively televised game since ABC TV back then was the only network that televised NCAA Division One college football--except for the bowl games. I was a HS senior in 1968/69 and I think that may be the last time I will be alive to have seen us beat the Golden Hurricane since I don't think we will be on their future schedule after this season.
