The Mean Green win their first game at Utah State’s Romney Stadium. ••• Darrell Dickey’s 2004 Mean Green football team would go to the New Orleans Bowl for the 4’th year in a row. •••North Texas athletic officials previously had helped the USU Aggies get into a conference when they were hanging in Independent status purgatory. ••• Check out 2:18 on the timeline to see T.J. Covington vault into the Mean Green football record book. ••• Enjoy this blast from the past. Be glad when this damn pandemic is contained & we can all get back to normal & watch Mean Green football 🏈... again. GMG!

What a night! A great weeknight crowd at Apogee Stadium, too. •••This game would feature “The Stand,” that is, when a good Rice Owls football team would be in the Red Zone & not score In 8 tries. Mean Green fans absolutely went nuts!!!! •••This Mean Green football team In a little over 2 months would play in the HOD Bowl game vs the UNLV Rebels in the Cotton Bowl Stadium. There would be almost 40,000 Mean Green fans for this bowl matchup. (UNLV brought so few fans). ••• North Texas won the January, 2014, bowl game easily. GMG!

I’m as frustrated as anyone with what I’m seeing at Apogee & TV—but probably not nearly as much as WB, SL & staff. Their pre-season intention I’d wager was not to have a poor defense; that is, a “D” with no penetration of an opponent’s offensive line as to create the sacking of a QB or the running for his life. Admittedly, I’m a novice with things I’ve never made a living doing & I’ve expressed the following thought before—but Simpleton Simon says: I only see this team shy 2 consistent pass rushers of being able to get back on schedule of having enough wins to get a bowl; a bowl for 40,000 MG fans to show up like we did in 2013 at Fair Park. Other Side of the Ball? Our offense is going to be fine seems to be the sentiment of many on GMG. ••• We all hope SL & his staff’s next influx of recruits fall in love with UNT & the Mean Green Village in their next 2 recruiting cycles. We hope they will be of such quality that it catches our program up with SMU & UH. Such recruiting would probably translate to Top 25 rankings, getting & winning bowl games. First things first, though, so let’s get back to the winning formula.

UNT will either keep advancing itself with the NCAA FBS athletic venues armed race no matter what our present state or we’ll just repeat bad history like we did by staying in an old football venue that should have been replaced 20-25 years before it was actually replaced. We’d still be in Fouts had some of the theories expressed on GMG been followed; theories such as “we need to fill FF for 5 years before we build another stadium.” GMG!

Our defense (albeit 4 true freshmen were on the field much of the game the other night); anyway, had SL & staff recruited “only” 2 pass rushing JUCO phenoms to create havoc on the opposing team’s QB, then suddenly the UNT secondary becomes better & the Mean Green play much better & maybe win 1 or 2 more games. GMG!

Yes, at the moment we do have other priorities than a new (larger) Readers Digest large letter edition🙄 of a video scoreboard & yes—we can all look forward to another 3 or 4 year run of winning seasons & bowl games (& lest we forget we had 4 bowls in a row in the early 2000’s) so let the good times roll & let that begin sooner than later. ____________ •••This link is all 130 NCAA FBS college stadiums video scoreboard sizes. http://deletionpedia.org/en/List_of_college_football_stadium_video_boards GMG! PS: Below is UH’s video scoreboard located in their west end zone.

Agree. If we had a choice the much larger video board where the present one is would (I think) be the choice for most, but it would block the view of those on the veranda (if that hasn’t been removed from the Athletic Center blueprints). So the problem is where would a much larger video screen be centrally located? Only place would be the north end zone but that presents a problem unless...it’s put it in the middle center part of the Wing Zone seating while losing some seating capacity. I’m no fan of the Wing Zone but if we had the normal curvature end zone (see photo) then we’d have a place to put a much larger video screen. GMG!

As long as a search engine is not laughing at me I’m fine.🙄 I was merely trying to change the subject from sacking & salting the far west side of the UNT campus—that’s all. (And as long as it made you laugh that’s all that counts). 🙃 Back in the day when we had these “the sky is falling “ moments (& those of us from the 60’s & 70’s have seen a few); anyway, back then we had no up to snuff football-related athletic venues for any coaching staff to seriously be able to sell recruits—albeit Fry, Corky & DD did OK, considering. I guess that ancient 2 year old link suggests those days of looking down at our shoestrings hat in hand are mostly in our past now. When you follow UNT for almost half a century one learns to find a silver lining in a dark cloud. GMG.

Moving on..... After reading this link on the UNT future facility's manifesto I had no idea that Apogee Stadium’s giant video screen will be moved (but I’d bet replaced by a much larger one)? https://dentonrc.com/news/unt-to-unveil-facility-master-plan-for-athletics-this-morning/article_27318cfb-730c-5706-a9d9-3c7437bc246c.html ✅GMG!

Super video in below link from the Fiesta Bowl featuring OU vs BSU. Many of ours Top 5 favorite bowl games of all time. •••With the huge UNT alums & fan’s presence in the HOD Bowl game vs UNLV in Dallas, can you only imagine how many Mean Green fans & students would have traveled to play OU in Tempe, AZ? https://www.google.com/amp/s/tvrev.com/college-football-independence-and-how-conference-less-teams-can-stay-on-tv/amp/ GMG!

Our main bugaboo with SMU & UH has most always been about where they’ve been in athletics (historically) vs. where we’ve been. Yes, SMU has been known to cheat in the past even using a Texas Governor one particular time to help them do it, but after we dismantled them at Apogee in 2018, they immediately got smart in their 20+ transfers recruiting of P-5 talent & got themselves a Top 25 ranked team (as they are even ranked today) in doing so—while our favorite school didn’t. ••• UH will always get prime beef with speed & quickness for linemen most years has come from right there in their talent rich area. The late, great Darrell Royal led the way for UH’s inclusion into the old SWC with one of his quotes that was said to be: “In recruiting they will now do so under SWC rules.” UH & SMU will remain a cut above until we find a way to equal them in recruiting, but let’s not wait until they come down in talent to equal that. I think we all love the fact that we can no longer say it’s our lack of facilities anymore at UNT.

Some think Seth L. has not been in Denton (emotionally) after he turned down the Kansas St. job; that is, after Bill Snyder wanted him to hire his son & Seth said “thanks but no thanks.” So to salve that self-wound SL got a nice, extended contract & a new state of the art Indoor Practice Facility for staying in Denton as his consolation prize for turning down a Big 12 job. Most G5 level coaches (understandably) are upwardly mobile & want to go where there are P5 sellouts of 50K+ fans who show no matter what or no matter who the opponent. All in Mean Green Land probably need to get over our latest disappointments & just pull for SL to recruit like hell & tweak his coaching staff since no one here is going to come up with $5 million (+\-) to buy out his contract. For SL some might add: Bloom where planted.

Looking at all the newbies & 2’nd year players we are starting & substituting &...what the loss to an SMU team that spent most of last Fall in the Top 25 did to our fandom’s psyche, one might wonder how we will win any game in 2020 but...I think we win this one. Our entire team growing in maturity is the key. •••Looking at many of our LOI’s we do seem to have more who are listing P-5 schools who’ve offered them which is a good thing. Honestly, I really do think UNT with more kids who are shocked when they visit & see the P-Five’ish type venues at the Mean Green Village; anyhow, that Littrell & staff will sign even more who list other P-5’s who’ve offered. This should translate to more above .500 seasons & a bowl win or 2 or 3, too, plus—a CUSA championship season. 🟡⚫️.....24 🟢⚪️.....37 GMG!

UNT vs Southern Miss on Fox Sports SW?
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNT 90 Grad's topic in Mean Green Football
WW, I called channel 47 two days ago & left a voice mail. One of their programming people called me back & said they would not be carrying the USM game. (Seems they’ve gone mostly high school football). Long story short, on the Dish it’s AT&T who will have our game so I subscribed to that at $13 a month. This whole thing seems kind of screwed up. Good luck.👍 GMG!
