❇️ Ron Shanklin is smiling from Heaven, Jaelon Darden! 😊 Like many of you, ex Mean Green great Ron Shanklin I counted as a friend. He recruited Ft. Worth for HFC Corky Nelson & would stop my office off Montgomery St. on occasion then we’d go get some Mexican food for lunch. (Usually Dos Gringos). 1959 *Time Magazine All America, UNT & KC Chiefs Hall of Famer one Abner Haynes was with Ron on one of those visits & you talk about your basic Mean Green memorable happy moment for this guy! 🤠 Ron described to me in detail the first time we should have beaten the Arkansas Razorbacks with the SWC official’s terrifically bad call in 1968–the year before the Hogs would play UT for the National Championship. (Yes, UNT was playing at that level alright). * Time Magazine’s All American team was “the All America team” in the 1950’s. GMG!

I couldn’t understand some on this board being so excited when we hired somebody from the Kansas Jayhawks football program. Now Bowen may just turn it all around & that would be a happy end to this crappy COVID-19 year.

Best college game many of us still saw at UNT & old Fouts was the NMSU game in 2002 whose win got us a bowl game in New Orleans. It was exciting from beginning to end & the goal post came down after the final second. REMEMBER ? GMG!

Potential Transfers from the Current Team
PlummMeanGreen replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Jason Bean has the kind of speed you need to have on the football field. Whether that be at QB or wide receiver who knows? I hope he doesn’t transfer but he very well could. -
(Great timing & right here on the eve of National Signing Day). 🙄 Mac Engel, FW Star-Telegram said: “Did Seth Littrell make a mistake in passing on the Kansas State job? Absolutely. He knows it. Can he get a similar offer from another school? Absolutely, but it won’t be this offseason.“ ➡️ A New American Journalist Tradition: That is, a Media-type doing someone else’s thinking. Engel first asks the above question then answers the question himself. Littrell only has to sit back, listen to Engel plan his future, eat popcorn & drink a Michelob Light. My 02.—-Every HFC in the NCAA FBS can dream to be in a bigger—better situation all the way to those Super Dream Jobs like Alabama, Notre Dame, LSU (most years), etc...if those kind of pressure cooker jobs are what the heart doctor orders for them. RIVIT! 🐸 I would think if an NCAA Top 10 program looking for a new coach convinced Gary Patterson that all TCU will ever be is a Big 12 “middle-of-the-pack” program that really most decades doesn’t have a legitImate chance for an NCAA National Championship he might listen; that is, if Gary’s personal career goals were higher than what being in Horned Frog Country will ever get him. •••Mac Engel needs to go crap on someone else’s program since he’s rarely graced the Mean Green Village to write about UNT most of the last 2 1/2 decades. (Sorry, journalists are not my favorite people of late). GMG!

‘21 QB Bryce Drummond - Pawhuska, OK [SIGNED LOI]
PlummMeanGreen replied to 97and03's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I asked my sister if she knew who Ree Drummond was & she said “sure, most women (& some men) who watch Food Networks on cable TV for certain knew who she was; in fact, I have her latest book.” https://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/richest-celebrity-chefs/ree-drummond-net-worth/?amp=1 ••• Thanks, Coach Littrell, for you & staff recruiting all these fine athletes from the Great State of Oklahoma! 🗣 🎶 “Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day!” (Rogers & Hammerstein) GMG! -

I (& others) were Mason Fine fans from the git-go when some on GMG were not. What many noticed about Mason was by his 2’nd or 3’rd game there were hardly any critiques of him being inconsistent or constantly hot/cold throughout any season. I hope Jason Bean can find a similar comfort zone. I think we need to hire a veteran QB coach who has a reputation of making field generals out of college QB’s & helps them to where they don’t throw the football 1-2 feet above being catchable. GMG

Even the “big boys“ have been known to bite the big one at the gate every once in awhile. Big 12 TCU got a lot of negative social media response on this particular day at Amon Carter Stadium. https://www.tcu360.com/story/18757images-empty-stadium-causes-concern-embarrassment/ GMG PS I’d guess any NCAA coach who had a vote in the coach’s poll would be tempted to do the same as Fry “might” have done? Just not sure how one coach’s vote could vault any team into a Top 20 poll, though.

Wish our video guys could find the original & get this or one similar on YouTube. A Memorable game for Hayden Fry’s Mean Green in only a “2 win” 1974 football season in Coach Fry’s 2’nd season as HFC. To beat the #19’th ranked SDSU Aztecs salvaged a poor season for the Mean Green. ➡️ Go to clip 7 for the final part of this coach’s game film. Click the blue numbers to watch. First thing you’ll notice are the jerseys & scoreboard numbers are backwards!🤢 GreenGrenade aka the late Rick Spears told me the Aztecs HFC (?) was so pissed after losing this game that he kicked the water fountain off the wall in the Fouts Field visitors locker room. AD Fry sent him a bill but never heard if he sent the repair money. https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc272190/m1/#track/7 GMG

I won’t say another thing about the subject because I just don’t think its going to happen at UNT. Others on this thread seem to agree so I’m copycatting them as well. If one looks at our W/L record for several decades it (alone) says we have hired only 1 Mean Green HFC who left Denton above .500 in career wins & losses since Odus Mitchell? That says we don’t do hirings very good up there. I hope Littrell proves many wrong (& gut feeling tells me I think he will) because that would be a win-win for all concerned if he did. •••We just need to quit having to buy out contracts up there because thats almost as bad as making the wrong hire. GMG

It’s not Brile’s W/L record that’s the experimental part. Everyone knows the guy can win. It’s just that UNT would suffer a public relations nightmare among its faculty, staff & more important, our students with his hiring. In this era of PC that is an easy prediction. I’m sorry for Art Briles. The late owner of a Weatherford eatery (*The Pizza Place) knew him & told me the Art Briles he knew was a total gentleman. He felt sorry for the guy, too *SilverEagle would remember Roger because he let us set up in his main room for a UNT party for the 2000 New Orleans Bowl.

GrandGreen, I have a 1’st cousin who has a CPA office in Limestone County (Groesbeck/Mexia) & he’s the typical diehard Aggie. He took in the whole experience in Aggieland as he & his older brother were both in the Corp (in different eras) when it was very large in numbers. We have an annual Plummer family reunion/cemetery decoration day at our Texas pioneer cemetery every Memorial Day weekend. At these gatherings, my Aggie cousin (Ricky) told me he always hires UNT accounting major grads every chance he gets. He just cannot say enough nice things about UNT. I give Rick a hard time about TAMU getting all that Permanent University Fund “chicken salad” while the rest of us get the chicken caca. All in good fun, of course. GMG

Chanticleers #Belted the Cougars
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreenWithEnvy's topic in Mean Green Football
Coastal Carolina is the story of this Fall like Boise State was several years ago when they beat OU in the Fiesta Bowl. CCU has a 21,000 seat stadium & did a good job selling their program to some fine recruits. We have much to sell at UNT starting with a population center of 7,000,000 within an hour of Apogee Stadium. When UNT shines in the North Texas Metroplex there are many, many, many who know about it. More specifically— Denton County.........approx 1,000,000 •City of Denton.......................142,000. •UNT enrollment................:......41,000 • DFW UNT Alums....Approx. 300,000 “If “ifs & buts were candy & nuts....” We need to hit this December signing date out of the park. We need the Texas & Oklahoma 3 (maybe 4) star recruits to take a safe chance with us & see they will not get splinters from Apogee Stadium’s bench but very much playing time as true freshmen. We need a number of that group to commit to UNT. ••• I’m sure Seth Littrell would welcome the few back who committed & then backed out of their commitment, too. The former captain of the 2000 OU Sooners football team knows these are 17 & 18 year olds who just want to get it right. GMG! -
Let Texas Tech be the school that treads the murky waters of Art Briles, although I don’t think they’d be interested. We don’t need another experiment at North Texas right now, especially since there are no openings which if there’s going to be, it won’t be for another year or 2. I hope Littrell gets it right, though. We don’t need to keep having failed HFC’s in Denton. We could get a “Coach’s graveyard” tag if we’re not careful.🙄 The Coastal Carolina Top 25 success has moved up the “win now” agendas of coaches in the NCAA FBS (G5). I’m proud (but admittedly jealous) of CCU. We all need their success & urgency to win attitude. They have most definitely raised the tide for all our ships. GMG

If asked, I wouldn’t want to be part of any committee that would have me on it. Wouldn’t be prudent—not going to do it. Distinguished? I still think flatulence in the middle of a 7 course dinner is funny. Don’t forget that my generation started SNL in the 70’s. (After Vietnam, humor was an agent of mental healing). gmg.

TAKE SOMINEX OR READ AN EPISTLE... So we’ve been getting high marks for our last 2 UNT recruiting classes with maybe a 3’rd one on the way? So what has LaTech’s classes in the same period of time been ranked? Like most all of you, I tend to look at results on the field. I talked to Harry about La Tech vs UNT recruiting 10 or so years ago. They were kicking our ass with favored Texas HS recruits then, but most of us fans/alums didn’t know back then that we had a HFC who wouldn’t leave the Denton city limits to recruit. (You can’t make this stuff up). I know I mentioned to Harry back then this: “why don’t we hire LaTech’s best recruiter whose kicking our ass in our own backyard with Texas HS recruits, offer him a significant pay raise & just hire the guy?” Of course, nothing like that ever took place then or even present day. . Can most agree that LaTech recruits didn’t take their game to Ruston because they fell in love with the Ruston night life or some Cajun Queen? (Are they all majoring in Tech’s fine engineering program)? •••With Texas Women’s University & UNT, there are more co-eds in Denton, Texas, America, than at UT-Austin or Texas A&M-College Station, so it’s not for a lack of hot chicks in Little D. We have a superb academic offering for a future recruit to Major in; we know our athletic venues in the MG Village are lights out where even across CUSA opponent’s fan who’ve seen them in person most all agree & say “UNT has the best facilities in the conference.” So fill in the blanks—Why can’t this football program be sold to where we can emulate schools like (forget SMU); yet schools like Top 25 Coastal? (I never knew that school even existed until about a year or so ago). 😇Forgive me--I’m just as pissed as the rest of you & only hope the 7‘th (pre-Little Big Horn) is in the way. We need to be putting a 10 season winning streak together vs “the Little Red & Blue Engine That Could.” 😳 GMG! 🤢 Seth Littrell is not on everyone’s Christmas shopping list right now & as an armchair QB I’ve questioned some of his M.O., too; but we need the guy to succeed in all phases because I don’t think he’s going anywhere else soon. •••Personally, I think he’s been in the doldrums since he turned down a Big 12 job to stay in Denton & if so, he needs to forget that & just bloom where planted. His Oklahoma family ties helped get an Indoor Practice Facility jump-started & their pockets are still deep from all I hear, so we shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water, either. Yes, SL still needs to win & even put some winning seasons together since my group was the last to see 4 consecutive above .500 seasons in Denton. We all deserve better than even that. GMG!

So sad. We had better teams play at Fouts Field. We once beat a PAC 12 school there matter a fact—even a Big 12 school for that matter. What the wide world of sports is-a goin’ on? What’s wrong? We seem stuck in a NCAA “under-performing” purgatory. Just turned 70 but I feel 90! Is 70 the new 90? God I hope not because that means in 10 years I’ll feel 100. Seriously, is it time to have a come to Jesus meeting in the Mean Green Village led by our highest pedigreed leadership? Please do not allow Apogee Stadium to be another Super Pit; that is, with 50 years of mostly frustration & not one trip to the 2’nd round of March Madness.

“People like Plummmeangreen?” 🤢 Actually, untjim1995 said that about CUSA West. He may be right, but I’m sure even he & the rest of us hope that will not always be the case. ➡️ If you use my name please make sure I am the one who made the quote, OK?😊 GMG!
