  1. O Brother🙄Again? Having been a UH football (& basketball) fan during its era of a most notable growth & until I transferred from Alvin JUCO to UNT in 1972; anyway, I, too, see some similarities of our 2 programs except for a few glaring differences that have made a big difference of late. (1) UH officially began school operations in the 1940’s (compared to UNT which was established in 1890). Compared to UNT, UH is still “the new kids on the block, yet they moved up the Texas intercollegiate pecking order very quickly. Darrell Royal even noticed what the Coogs were up to. Boyhowdy! That 1968 20-20 tie in Austin was a classic. It got UH in the SWC. (2) UH during its 1960’s athletic growth spurt grabbed the bull by the horns & would not let the glories of the SWC keep them from aiming high & (more so) accomplishing high. UNT? Well, we didn’t aim high enough most my life (except with administrative lip service). Still, we seemed mired in the mud for the advancement of our program while here in DFW we focused on SMU way too much. Focused as to what they had & what we didn’t have. ➡️ Can you imagine if the UH of the 1960’s had done that with crosstown Rice U & what Coog athletics might look like today? 🎼V-A-R-S-I-T-Y🎼🔵🔴SMU—Yes, good academics there but how many with an Einstein IQ are playing college football—anywhere? Also, how few on the Hilltop actually have being President of Republic National Bank as their goal? SMU recruiters still make living that “potential” dream count for something in the annual recruiting wars plus—they even had an NCAA national championship going on 100 years ago? The ex-SWC’ers still recruit as if they were still in the SWC while we’ve recruited (too many times) as if we were still in the Southland Conference & with a “we po’ but proud” teacher’s college attitude to boot. ❇️➡️ UNT’s ATHLETIC FUTURE? Many of us have never seen it brighter, but we still need to leave some of our past in the past—much like SMU has apparently done. 🦅❇️🦅GMG!
  2. Never met Glenn, but I saw him at enough UNT events to know he was definitely one of us. RIP, Sir.
  3. Sounds like Kameron Hill could be a real pass rushing deluxe. This upcoming 2021 Mean Green “D” I believe is going to be fun watching its development. 🦅❇️🦅
  4. Here are the latest rankings from 247 sports. A couple more key signings before August 1’st could put UNT at the top in CUSA. https://247sports.com/season/2020-football/compositeteamrankings/ _____________________________________________ Conference-USA Recruiting as of 2-19-2021 Florida Atlantic 23 Commits 83.50 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 20 166.46 2 North Texas 24 Commits 83.27 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 23 165.86 3 Charlotte 24 Commits 82.10 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 1 3-STAR 19 165.21 4 FIU 22 Commits 82.58 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 20 162.27 5 Southern Miss 27 Commits 82.46 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 25 162.20 6 Louisiana Tech 24 Commits 82.92 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 22 162.08 7 Western Kentucky 27 Commits 81.52 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 21 157.37 8 UAB 19 Commits 82.30 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 17 151.88 9 UTSA 24 Commits 82.55 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 17 151.44 10 Middle Tennessee State 22 Commits 81.97 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 19 150.60 11 Rice 19 Commits 82.25 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 18 147.70 12 Old Dominion 22 Commits 81.34 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 18 147.63 13 Marshall 23 Commits 81.07 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 16 146.14 14 UTEP 30 Commits 78.40 5-STAR 0 4-STAR 0 3-STAR 6
  5. With hardly any G5 TV packages that produce any significant TV revenue for either school & the tight athletic budgets in this era, the series makes sense. (See the last paragraph in this 🙄manifesto, though). ••• Took a while, but UNT now has top-knotch football facilities, a nice adjacent to those venues athletic dormitory & looking at the last 3 years recruiting rankings by 247 has proven to quality talent that UNT (in deed) has something of its own to sell. Public vs. Private Texas universities have their respective percs & always have. In our history & as far as recruiting goes we’ve never seen our favorite school consistently go head to head with as many P5 schools as we did this last recruiting cycle (& we will still sign a few more before August 1’st). This is a trend I believe will continue. The racial diversity of UNT’s 41,000 enrollment school has always (IMO) been a plus if we’ll find a way of magnifying that (among other pluses). AD Wren Baker & Company actually seem to be doing that. ••• We just need to focus on the future (just like Bill Snyder & Kansas State did when all their Big 8/Big 12 series with their conference opponents were lopsided as they could be). Just win.
  6. I truly think USA high school coaches will eventually protest the NCAA-sanctioned portal because of how it appears it’s going to completely screw up the recruitment of too many of their HS products. 🦅❇️🦅
  7. First of all, SMU alums from yesteryear are never going to get over not being asked to join their brethren Baylor & TCU to the Big 12. (Can you really blame them)? Second of all, neither of our programs will fold if they don’t play each other. I’m sure both would probably prefer to play any Big 12 school instead, but that’s easier said than done. YouTube videos (like the first one below) suggests there actually might be some interest among the players for the game to be played. Heck, many of them from both schools know each other from their DFW HS playing days. Watch the players from both schools gravitate to each other to shake hands & a short post-game chat. At any rate, I think the Mustangs lopsided loss to UNT was indirectly a reason SMU initially went all in for their Portal recruiting mode of operation. The Pony’s needed a pretty quick infusion of talent or UNT could have very well come to Dallas & embarrassed the Stangs’ (as they did at Apogee) & for a second year in a row, but this time in front of SMU fans. Nevertheless, a normal (or the usual) “Texas HS” recruiting cycle was not going to give SMU that quick fix to effectively play an early September game at GJ Ford Stadium vs UNT so hence—here come da’ Portal. 🤔Maybe I’m wrong about this, but I don’t think I am. SMU MUSTANG BAND AT APOGEE 🦅❇️🦅GMG!
  8. One of my 3 favorite Mean Green moments, ie, “The Stand.”— “The Drive” & the win over the Aggies of NMSU to clinch a bowl game. ———————- Yall seen this? Took place in my home county (Brazoria). Wonder if Stone Cold would ask her out for a date?
  9. Good luck, Zach! (& GMG) 🦅❇️🦅
  10. I think Austin Aune will be a very capable starter or backup—Ruder most likely the same scenario. Many of us can remember when we barely had a starter up there—least of all a backup. Personally, I’m enjoying all this talent bumping into each other in Mean Green Country. I honestly believe all this will have one heckuva’ happy ending for all. 🦅❇️🦅
  11. I know, I’ve been guilty of Green koolade binge drinking, but could this Fall’s “D” be one of the big surprises & 180 degree turnarounds of CUSA & the Lone Star State (as in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football sportswriter’s staff)?
  12. I wonder if during his pre-portal days at UNT if his injury vs the Cal Bears if that slowed him? Still amazes me how close to winning that PAC12 opponent game the Mean Green were. 🦅❇️🦅
  13. I wish him well. His dad was one of the good guys. 🦅GMG!
  14. Thanks, Eagle71. I love these kind of posts. We have to keep our UNT history alive for the younger fans & alums. Many of us have stories from our respective eras at UNT to share; otherwise they go to the grave with us. 🦅❇️🦅GMG!
  15. Winning cures cancer so— win. We’re overdue to have multiple consecutive winning seasons in Denton. 🦅❇️🦅 GMG!
  16. Wonder who at UNT has touched base with him? How’s bout’ one of his shows on campus with a rich & famous UNT alum. He interviews more than just southern rednecks.🤠 I believe he’s based in LA. He had a fun interview with a R & B star whose name escapes me.
  17. After 3 near the top 247 recruiting classes in CUSA Coach Bennett will have “D” talent to work with. Again, UNT has never had such a high pedigree hire of an assistant coach (& this hire could not have been more timely). I’m stoked & cant wait for Spring football to begin! 🦅❇️🦅
  18. More on North Texas & KC Chief’s legend Abner Haynes. http://chiefshallofhonor.com/players/chiefs-hall-of-fame/offense/abner-haynes/
  19. Including that UNT win over TCU, ADLER, I can’t find videos of UNT football wins over other Southwest Conference schools. That includes 2 wins over Texas Tech the last 4(?) times we played the Red Raiders. One of those wins is briefly featured in a video excerpt in a UNT season highlights video that the Mean Green Radio Network guys very professionally produced. •••Another not-to-be-found video of a Mean Green win over a Big 12 Baylor in Denton, circa 2000. •••No video of a Mean Green win at Fouts Field over PAC 12 Oregon State in that very exciting shootout. If UNT has film (or video) of some (or most) of those games what does it take to put those on YouTube for the Mean Green Nation (& beyond) to view? Just asking.🤔 🦅❇️🦅
  20. ••• Take a breather from the usual stuff. ❇️ Steve Williams (of Edna,TX) later became known as Stone Cold Steve Austin; anyhow, Steve played linebacker for UNT Coach Corky Nelson’s Mean Green back in the 1980’s. (Anyone else remember seeing him play at old Fouts Field)? ⚫️🦅🟡 Brett Favre needs no introduction to football fans both at the college & NFL level. Stone Cold hosts a TV show on the USA Network called “Straight Up Steve Austin.” In this episode Steve hosts his pal Brett Favre & the 2 country boys head out to the Mississippi woods to, uh, well...just spend the next 3+ minutes video excerpt from the original 30 minute show. ❇️🦅❇️
  21. Which one is that?
  22. Help! Why isn’t UNT’s 4 star QB showing up in 247’s rankings? 🦅❇️🦅
  23. How do they keep black mold out of that old venue?
