  1. Away games, right FFR? UT at the Super Drum: Went to a game there a few years ago to support the Green/we got beat, but it was a fun trip for the group I was with. Mexican food was damn good following the game. SMU at Moody: We got behind quite a bit the first half, but we came back in the 2'nd half before some very disbelieving Mustang fans and we won the game. You could fill their air oozing out of their baloon. TCU at Daniel Meyer: My former professor at NT, ie, Billy Tubbs was the TCU coach at the time and he had his Frogs runnin' and gunnin'. Took my (then) girl friend's son to the game who proceeded to start yelling for TCU.
  2. Like SUMG told me yesterday, it was sort of a "coming of age" when your folks allowed you (as a very young teen) stay up to wach Carson's monologue on a school night. I watched his last show and teared up like the rest of you I'm sure. Still waiting for one of our older alums to tell us if they knew Ed McMahon when he briefly lived on the NT campus at Chilton Hall, ie, the Chilton Hilton. I believe that was during WWII or the Korean War. Yes, Chilton was once a dorm.
  3. While Ed McMahon was in the military, he actually stayed at what many of us used to call the Chilton Hilton which was a dorm at one time. I hope that some of you older UNT alums who know the story will eleborate on this as we celebrate the life of Johnny Carson. I am watching Larry King right now who has a special on Johnny.
  4. Ditto on your first post, SUMG. Knew this one would hit you harder than most since all of you comedians have your own fraternity. Remember staying up as a kid to watch ol' Johnny. He will be missed.
  5. SUMG, ever worked for anyone from New Jersey? I have and it was the worst 3 years of my working life because he was 110% DamnYankee and 110% Damn Asshole. That ex supervisor and Bill Parcells must have grown up in the same New Jersey neighborhood because they act so much alike. Bill Parcells is like a fish out of water in the Lone Star State. He really should have quit and allowed Arkansas Jones to get a coach more Texas-friendy AND Texan-acceptable. I mean come on now, how many of us Texans would just enjoy the hell out of living in New Jersey (or out of Texas for that matter)? One of the academic departments at UNT did a study on how if you were a Texas based human resource person which state in the USA that you would get an applicant would they least of all offer a job; well, uh, New Jersey was #1 in that poll. I think the DFW sports media are not exactly enamored with Bill Parcells, either. Randy Galloway hides much of his disdain for "Big Bill" as he calls the Dallas coach AND RG refuses to call him The Tuna. Most of the DFW sports media cannot stand the guy and one only has to listen to them on the air to see that. I think Bill Parcells is really beginning to see that he wore his welcome out not so long ago in Texas. GOD BLESS TEXAS!
  6. DG, I think it is Boise State and Fresno St that creates that WAC perception. Would be nice if UNT could start being a Top 25 foootball program like Boise State. BTW, Coach DD's Mean Green not that long ago beat the Boise State Broncos. In fact, how about 2 years in a row, ie, 1998 and 1999? BUILD IT (and then recruit toward it).
  7. Agree... Having been a regular listener since Day 1 of operation, most of The Ticket broadcast staff take vacation this time of year including "The Hard Line." Mike Rhyner helped start this radio station, has much stock in it and influence in what goes on and I don't think he would fire himself OR put himself out to pasture.
  8. Whadda' ya think about, uh, Northern Tex?!?!?
  9. UNT was playing a Top 15 team last night which would tend to expose weaknesses for any program that is still a work in progress. Coach Johnny J still has some more recruiting to do, but from those of you who follow BB very close and follow his recruiting, he seems to be closing the gap on that, too.
  10. How do I see it? I see it that you guys are going to meet an ex Texas High School football bred phenom that will make the Golden Eagles think Arrington was running in slow motion. Other than that, don't have much more to say about how I see it. I think the USM/UNT game will also get superb Nielsen ratings, too, because its the only show in town (or on TV) that Tuesday night, December 14'th at the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl. UNT gets a CUSA bowl annually without even having to be in CUSA. How novel is that?
  11. Saw this in both the DMN and FWST at my late lunch newspapers reading today. Do you Houstonians have it on TV down there, too? BTW, 7:00 pm broadcast...
  12. The TCU fans sitting several rows behind me were very well mannered. Where the heck did you sit, UNT_playmaker, to observe Frog rowdiness? Maybe they were just besides themselves getting to watch a DFW on-campus college basketball game in a very, very nice and ageless Super Pit? Still can't see Texas "Christian" U fans getting THAT rowdy, though. That would be tantamount to the Pope doing high 5's and bumping chest with an archbishop after watching a Notre Dame player slam dunk!
  13. Left out from this thread is the fact that for a few years Billy Tubbs was also a UNT assistant coach under the great Bill Blakely. In fact, I took a class that Billy Tubbs taught as one of my electives. Took it (among other reasons than just 3 credits) because I thought Billy was humerous from his antics on the coach's bench alongside Blakely. He took that same humor to the classroom, too. What was funny was how so many of us wanted (and wrote letters on his behalf since there was no email in that day) to get Billy Tubbs back in Denton to take over when Blakely left but seems the UNT administration didn't think Billy had so great a future. ONLY in Mean Green Country, folks, only in MG Country! BTW, anyone see Bill Blakely at last night's game? Am going to try to make the TCU game this next Saturday night at the Super Pit. Has the makings of a good game, eh?
  14. Now this is getting even more interesting. SUMG gave the Mean Green Club $2,500.oo this year, UNT_playmaker, so you might want to go in another direction with this discussion.
  15. Coach, to hear that brash and over-confident Craig James talk you'd think he must have gone to $MU or something! Oh, I forgot, he did play on that $emi-pro team back then! Anyone else think Craig James likes to opinonate what he perceives the sports broadcast moguls and executives want to hear?
  16. But, GT(N)T, those of us who care about "OUR" alma mater never-ever cuss our football players. If I ever dipped to that level, I would quit sending money and coming to games even though that is where I got my education. I think Coach DD is not a public speaker. He got off to a terrible start with this football program, maybe worse than anyone else ever has at UNT that got to stick around after such a slow start. As much as I hate to say this, none of this will probably ever stop until DD leaves Denton and whether that is next year or next decade. I hope it is next decade, personally. DD has something stuck in his crall that he seems to not want to regurgitate. Most of us can handle bad customer service even at the school we have all invested much time, tuition and some donations, but the casual fan (you know, the one's who seats stay empty at Fouts) I am most a-feared will never understand DD appearing to come after the customers like he seems to do when he gets the media spotllight. I thought from earlier post game shows this football season, he had dropped his personal vendetta against whoever/whatever. Just my .02.... BTW, I support Coach Dickey and want him to build this football program to the next level (which only will happen when we win the NO's Bowl and move into a new stadium) but for the record, this alum has never, ever badmouthed a Mean Green football player in 30 plus years of following Mean Green football. Some of those players I have had the priviledge of calling friend after they graduated from UNT.
  17. This thread (a take off from the former Mean Green Movieola thread) is for those of you who want to share your latest music purchases with your own personal reviews. I just purchased a DVD concert from my local WalMart music department entitled: PETER CETERA "Live"... Like many of you 70's and 80's NTSU students, didn't we all just love all those groups that had that UNT COM/Denton big horns sound such as Chicago, Blood, Sweat and Tears and others possessed? Of course, this DVD concert features Peter Cetera, formerly of Chicago Transit Authority (later called simply "Chicago".... Believe it or not, Cetera is now 60 years old but to hear this 1'st tenor's pipes singing all of his hits and not missing a note will leave you inspired and at the same time shaking your head with how life seems to have begun at 60 for Mr. Cetera. This live concert is based in Utah with the Salt Lake City Symphony Orchestra backing Mr. Cetera along with his own unplugged band that joins the orchestra. Cetera has a male and female vocalists backing him up who do great harmonies. Amazingly, the male guitartis/vocalist resemble our own Coach Darrell Dickey! The female vocalist (Ms. Kim Keyes) duets with Cetera with several of the duo hits he had with several female chartbusters such as Cher, Amy Grant and others. Ms, Keyes is quite vocalist in her own right but her impersonation of Cher will knock you out of your chair with awe, wonder and laughter! If you want to be thoroughly entertained, go pick up this DVD.
  18. Did I read that it has cost SMU $75,000 to replace their goalposts that were tore down after their 1'st win? Jeez! Folks, thats a few athletic scholarships if we are talking about $30K or however the amount to replace these things. It was neat when thousands stormed the field after we beat NMSU 3 years ago at Fouts, but other channels of celebration may now be needed in light of what we are hearing are the expense factor on replacing a simple goal post. Are these above figures even close to being right? GMG! PS: I remember it wasn't too long ago we were ready to tear Fouts Field down at a home season ending game! HERE'S TO ALL THE SENIORS AT UNT ! ! ! !
  19. Ominous dark clouds & lightning + pre-game rain drops + game televised in Denton/DFW + Halloween + fans with umbrellas who walk in the rain to the stadium then told they cannot bring their umbrellas inside stadium ("Hey, honey! It will be a blast to watch the game soaking wet)!" ='s approx 11,000 fans Saturday night. Guess we should be happy we're still over 15,000 per game average, although any program should allow for 1 bad weather game per season. Some of our campus officials are being lulled into a "Denton only" promotions philosophy. Seems they would see it is not working? Maybe its time to budget more athletic promotions monies that could make a difference at the gate so we don't have threads such as this one?
  20. Heard this sad news on KRLD tonight coming home from work. I believe one of our regular posters on GMG.com was his campaign manager when he ran and won the Denton mayoral race last decade. I believe the late Mr. Castleberry was also a UNT alum and I met him at a Mean Green football game many years ago. $10 million mayor? Mr. Castleberry won the Publishing Clearinghouse jackpot. I believe that is the one Ed McMahon used to hawk on TV for years. Condolensces to the Castleberry family.
  21. Thanks for those nostalgic photos of P.C. Cobb Stadium, GGII. I remember seeing that venue off Dallas' Stemmons Fwy in my first few trips from the Gulf Coast to Denton back in the early 70's. Thanks for those memories although I never attended a FB game there.
  22. Was just curious, Cerebus... You and Harry do a great job with this forum and it has galvanized a pretty damn impressive fan base at the same time. I like all I have met because of GMG.com and that's whether we ever agreed on anything or not. Glory to the Green.....
