  1. Uh, is opening up the offense such a novelty for La Tech for crissakes'?!?! Thats tantamount to Lawrence Welk announcing to the whole world that his orchestra is going to start playing polka music.
  2. GreenBat, I thought it seemed a bit early as I looked at the newstand and took a doulbe-take thinking, "what the hell is this and this early?!?!?" So how many of you are going to be making a trip to Weatherford, Texas, this weekend?!?!? One might want to check out the Wal Mart off Cherrry Street in west FW, too, because sometimes it seems they have had DC'sTF early as well. One might also check Borders Books on FW's west freeway, too. (Probably would call before I took a trip to any of these places, though).
  3. Stebo, where could I possibly begin with 5 pages of coverage? BUT.........a few highlights There are 5 full pages of NORTH TEXAS coverage with more Mean Green photos than ever with each D1-A school in Texas' play by play guys writing a (new to TEXAS FOOTBALL) featurette called "Off the Air" about their personal experiences with their roles in the booth at all the respective D1-A universities in the Lone Star State. Present "Voice of the Mean Green" George Dunham has a nice article talking about the progress of NT football since he has followed it the 22 years that he has(12 of which as play by play man of the Mean Green). ................................................................................................. DAVE CAMPBELL'S TEXAS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE'S 2005 SUN BELT CONFERENCE PREDICTION: (1) NORTH TEXAS (2) Troy U (3) Middle Tennessee (4) U of L (5) FAU (6) UL-M (7) ASU (8) FIU ................................................................................................. There is a nice featurette on QB Joey Byerly with a quote from Ramone Flanagan that said: "Joey kept making plays in spring practice.' "When he got under center, he was productive. His decision-making got better and better as spring practice went along." Dickey adds "we were also very impressed with Meager before he got hurt." Also, there is a feature with CBS sports Spencer Tillman, Turner Sports' Ron Thulin and ESPN's Andre Ware all forecasting that NORTH TEXAS will need win its 5'th consecutive SBC football championship while going to its 5'th bowl game in a row. At the bottom of each of their paragraphs of comments is the new Son of Worm eagle logo (so at least that new branding logo made its state of Texas debut in TEXAS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE which means a whole lot of folks will now see it. Ex Mean Green football player Jeff Rodger's dad Randy Rodgers (an integral part of TEXAS FOOTBALL magazine) has a section in the magazine advertising his recruiting service. His web address is: www.randyrodgersrecruiting.com
  4. As long as we have the Fouts Field dressing room for visitors (and words gets out about Baylor's experience in it at half time) I predict it won't happen, NT80. Of course, the visitor's dressing room is all that is wrong with Fouts Field, right? (You know, had they not put a track in that stadium who knows what we'd be doing with it today----of course, TxDOT still needs their land adjacent to Fouts now don't they)? One thing about MT is that they obviously didn't have a track coach as their AD when they went about building their football stadium, but NORTH TEXAS did. BUILD IT!
  5. Got mine tonight at the Weatherford (Tx) Wal Mart. Where did yall get your copy?
  6. Great idea for a well deserving person who has not been in the best of health lately. Great to see some "now famous" ex NT students of Mr. Mercer's who will be special guest among many others, yet others seem to be missing from the list, for instance........... ..............anyone know if former Mean Green football great and NBC sportscaster Beasley Reece is aware of this event? And for heaven's sake, why wouldn't our own women's sportscaster pioneer and one of 2 Miss Americas from NORTH TEXAS, ie, the one and only Phyliss George be invited to this very special NORTH TEXAS happening (if she hasn't been already)? Who am I leaving off this list of famous NT Exes who are products of our Radio & TV program of past decades? At NT (and IMHO) we have to start honoring our elder Eagles and Mean Greeners more often much like this. ................................................................................ MERCER MOMENTS: I think we all have memorable radio and/or TV Bill Mercer broadcast moments whether they were when he was the "Voice of the Mean Green" (which he still officially is emeritus); or when Mr. Mercer was the Texas Ranger's 1'st play by play guy with his sidekick, the late Don Drysdale; or whether you listened to him when he was with Harry Carey and the White Sox; or when Mr. Mercer was the first radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys; OR even when Mr. Mercer hammed it up on the old pro wrestling TV days of yester-year here in DFW. Yet my own (as I'd bet many of yours) favorite Bill Mercer radio moment was when I was an NT student listening to the NORTH TEXAS/Tennessee Volunteer football game of 1975. It was about as electric in that Mean Green broadcast booth as I can ever recall the day Coach Hayden Fry's team upset the mighty UT Vols. Funny thing, but I cannot remember who his color commentator was that day. Anyone remember who that was?
  7. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
  8. For certain, Jack, a more sobering overview of our 2005 football season. The very early scheduling by the SBC front office of the MT game was their very un-subtle way of saying "we're going to do all we can do to make sure NORTH TEXAS is replaced as this year's NO'S Bowl host with this early game for this year's very young Mean Green team." (That was their exact words, too)!: }:>) The SBC office knows of our past early season's "non-jell" situations most football seasons, but I still believe we will have the best team in the SBC at the end of the season. Yet this very out of sync football schedule with the early season (2'nd game of year for 'chrisakes) SBC game, the fact that we gave ASU their Army game (while we sacrificed what will be a much needed open date for our football team in doing so), the Tuesday night game while too many are still on Dallas freeways trying to get home AND then..........a Saturday after Thanksgiving home game at Fouts Field with empty dorms on campus as students are at home eating leftovers is IMHO the most out of sync football schedule in the history of NT football. And yes, I am also a conspiracy theorists in the assassination of our infamous white squirrel near NT's Bruce Hall dormitory. He was last seen carrying a sign walking the sidewalk in front of Bruce Hall that said: "WHO PUT THIS OUT OF SYNC 2005 MEAN GREEN FOOTBALL SCHEDULE TOGETHER ALREADY?!?"
  9. Bump, bump... Interesting new numbers...
  10. I don't know about receiver tandems, but if there is any one SBC receiver who can top the Mean Green's Johnny Quinn I want to know who that person is. Of course, any team who passes more than NT (which is 99% of them) would tend to help receivers get better rankings, too.
  11. Yeppers! In Hayden Fry's 2'nd year at NT (circa, 1974), the Mean Green beat San Diego St. when the Aztecs were ranked in the Top 20 and that was during a year that the MG had a so-so year. BUILD IT! (Sorry, NT80, had to borrow your battle cry again)!
  12. It can happen again for NORTH TEXAS even in this era of NCAA football. BUILD IT!
  13. Well, I guess we can't be the first in the SBC to have a Spanish-speaking radio broadcast, right? Still think it would be worth looking into for NT if it didn't cost too much; but for darn sure we need an English-speaking M.G.R.N. outlet in Houston, Texas, America. Wonder what radio station down there would be available and at what cost?
  14. Harry, what I was hoping in this report was that KNTU 88.1FM had found a much higher hill to put a much higher transmittor on top of as to give us outside their coverage area a better chance to listen to the radio station at night; but we take what we can get, eh?
  15. The SBC will not expand until La Tech runs out of "left on the table" by the new CUSA schools who left the WAC travel money or they decide to go independent. I don't think CUSA will be expanding any time soon, either. So.............we all need to bloom where planted?
  16. As some of you know, I am in the post-secondary education business and I hear "UNT" roll off many tongues (old and young) with absolutely no giggles, ha-ha's or whatever some of the rest of you seem to be getting in your work environments. Highway signage will always display "UNT" when they don't won't to spell out our full name, such as UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth which thousands see every day on FW's Interstate 30 West. I guess one might say we are who we are because we sure can't undo the fact that we are U of NT.
  17. Jeez! NT's former #1 NFL draft choice Cedric Hardman had "ELEVEN" sacks in one game?!?!? Funny thing but I don't recall ever seeing that most interesting statistic. Good find!
  18. Any write-ups in the DRC?
  19. Boyhowdy, this is one that just fell from the heavens into the laps of NORTH TEXAS and Mean Green athletics. What I liked hearing the most last winter was when the Denton Outlaw's owner said they'd wait a year before they'd build a new baseball stadium at Eagle Point because they wanted to do it right and with class.
  20. UNTFan23, I also liked "The Postman" which I thought was a highly underrated movie but one of the best things about this movie was (amazingly) the end credits when Amy Grant and "The Postman" star Kevin Costner sang duet-style the Lovin' Spoonful's old hit "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" in a slow, ballad style. Of course, I knew Grant could sing but didn't know Costner could deliver some good sounds. ADDENDUM: In the original "The Longest Yard" Jim Hampton (an NT graduate) played the part of the guy in the prison cell who was burned alive when he turned on the light bulb that exploded. I believe Gray Eagle knew Jim Hampton when they were both at NT, and Jack, if you are reading this post, please enlighten us on that subject if you will. Thanks in advance....
  21. God Bless All U.S. Veterans From Every Branch of Service & Every War... And To Those Who Are Serving Our Country Now...
  22. Anyone else think the virtual tour video of the new tennis complex may have helped with this bannter recruiting class?
  23. The humor and harmless sarcasm that has been expressed on GMG.com today far exceeds any other day in memory on this forum for this nestor. Hey! Let's enjoy what we are doing in Denton, folks, because life is just too gol' darn short to not have fun with all of this. We worry about the perfect logo for NT, yet there are still people trying to find a place to eat and sleep in other parts of the world that were swept by a Tsunami several months ago. Life is really good in Mean Green Country when you think about it.
  24. If one of you could link Bud Kennedy's feature in today's FW Star Telegram on the Fry St. Fair being back in Denton I'd greatly appreciate it.... Our GMG.com readers might be interested to read some of Mr. Kennedy's comments on this music fair and the college town it is based. Kennedy sorta' takes the side of the Fry St. Fair planners and suggests others in Denton might be missing out on a golden opportunity with all this.
