Cobb Thomas article in ESPN Magazine
PlummMeanGreen replied to NorthTexan95's topic in Mean Green Football
I think the TV networks took the purity factor out of college football long ago. It is my hope when UT, TAMU and similar school's head football coaches start making up to $5 million annually, then college administrators across the NCAA should hold a pow-wow and end this "we're going to top you" attitude that the upper echelon schools of NCAA D1-A have created; and that , of course, because of the almighty dollar. I am for anyone making a good living (and think our NT coaches are all under-paid at the moment), but some of this at other NCAA quarters is getting completely out of hand. -
Said it on another thread but: CONGRATS HORNED FROGS!
-
Amen... The NORTH TEXAS vs Middle Tennessee game should shape up to be a good TV game for college football fans next Saturday. I say Las Vegas will open with the Blue Raiders a being a 7 point (home team) favorite, but that may close toward the end of the week. Much of that has to do with how MT does against Bama today.
-
Alabama may be not be the Crimson Tide of old. OU may not be the Sooners of old although you cannot take away from what TCU did today and "@" Norman! (Congrats, Horned Frogs) I've noticed this about TCU the last few years but did anyone else notice that TCU is wearing blue (and not purple)? No, its not your TV color needing adjusted, either. The TCU assistant coach wearing a purple cap really showed the difference in colors compared to the Frogs football team. Your take on MT/Bama? GMG!

I am more concerned why the Mean Green Club doesn't bring in at least $1,000,000 annually to NT Athletic's coffers than the "UNT" word. You know, I've been in the education business with people who regularly talk about colleges and universities they have or might attend and when they say "UNT" they never flinch, giggle, elbow each other with a Sylvestor the Cat "ship-eating" grin or any more a different response than when they would say, ULaLa, USC, SMU or TCU. I think a few in our MG family (with genuine concern) have grabbed onto this and made it a smack board wind-driven Texas prairie fire that is really only one lit match. Just my .02 on that. We are always going to be "UNT", ie, the University of North Texas and the sooner we all accept it the better. "WE" are not going to change that. "WE" of GMG.com have probably been more responsible for outsiders who have never one time been on our campus dissing Fouts than any other group and once some of our non-NT affiliated critics have actually attended a game at Fouts how many times have some of us heard: "It's just not as bad as you all have advertised on your message board." If the clientle in the sector of education I've worked for almost a quarter of a century heard from me (non-stop) tell of the potential cruel humor of a particular word some have connected with "UNT" I feel 99.9% of the non-NT clientele I work with would tell me: "You know, I never really ever thought of UNT in that light at all until you just brought it up." meanjoe, to quote you with one addition: Join the Mean Green Club... Buy Season Tickets... Support Katrina refugees... These 3 things are the most important things happening in Mean Green Country right now, even moreso than our school's name or our new brandings. GMG!

Harry, I know some of this info is pinned at the top, but some of us tend to not always look at the pinned subjects at the top of this page since they stay there for days at a time. But..........can someone debrief those of us who plan on coming to Fouts Field tomorrow morning to watch the Mean Green practice as to where we need to drop off the non-perishable goods for the Hurricane Katrina refugees? Is there a certain gate or checkpoint at Fouts where we need to drop off these items? What are the latest times for all this to happen Saturday (since they have been subject to change in the past)? Anyone with updated info on all this?

Mean Green Athletes Begin Hurricane Relief Effort
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
You might be surprised just how far your $20 donation will go when it comes to relief services who buy food/supplies at well below wholesale prices. What a great gesture on your part, fellow Mean Green friend. -
Louisiana-Monroe Embarrasing the Belt
PlummMeanGreen replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
IMHO, its releveant enough that I hope NT never schedules any 1-AA schools in the future, particulaly NW State (LA). -
So Zeke, you're telling me to stick with the day job? gmg!

.......yoUr .....CouNty ............Team Can some of you graphic design artist do a most creative bumper sticker with that slogan? TCU (to some extent) still uses "Your Home Team" as I've seen that slogan on some of their promo materials here in Fort Worth. GMG!

CorinthEagle, the #3 on your list is the one I noticed last night, too. They have that little scat-back who returns kickoffs and punts, too, who can really scoot. He is their offense and if he (for some reason) were out of our game with the 'Canes, TU would be an easy "W" for the Mean Green IMO. I think our Sir Patrick Cobbs and Super Jamario Thomas will think they are running sprint races at a track meet against Tulsa's defense, though.

Is the above North Texas license plate just a branding sample or is that how the new ones are going to look? Anyone know? GMG!

Tulane May Not Play Football In 2005
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
If Tulane did not play, could not any of their players transfer and immediately be elgible to play at their school of choice? Of course, they've already missed an entire week of school at most D1-A schools across the USA. -
ADAM VENEGAS Soph/Offensive Line/6-3/305 Olathe, KS (Olathe North HS) 2005: Expected to be a reserve on the offensive line...2003: Was a redshirt (But check out his HS football successes on defense) High School/Personal: Received All-State 6-A First Team honors...Was named one of the top 11 players in the state of Kansas by the Topekah Capital-Journal...Ranked second on Olathe North HS's defense in the Eagle point system, racking up 30 solo tackles, 29 assissts, seven tackles for a loss and a team high 6 sacks...Recorded 9 career sacks and started on a North team that lost one game... Participated in the 2003 Shrine Bowl Game...Was state champion in wrestling... ................................................................................... Harry/ Matt/Cerebus: Is he a possible to move to the Mean Green "D" line just looking at his impressive HS credentials as a defensive star?
-
Would it be to NT's advantage to switch to a 3-4 defense at given times in the MT game?? Passing downs for the 3-4 preferably, but (who knows) MT might pass every down since they are apparently still trying to develop their running game. Any thoughts (pro or con) on an occasional 3-4 defense? For sure, we do have some speedsters on this Mean Green defense.

Mean Green Athletes Begin Hurricane Relief Effort
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Whether you like or dislike Rick Villarreal is your own personal business and your right as a free-thinking American, but would UT's DeLoss Dodds and similar be sitting at a table like the one in this photo in the hot, humid Texas weather? For you lurking or visiting GoMeanGreen.com, that is the NORTH TEXAS Athletic Director sitting on the far right end of the table in the shorts. I applaud all of our NT athletic scholarship students AND the general NT student body in this campus-wide relief effort for the hurricane victims. All that from our NT students makes me Mean Green & darn proud of it more than any football game in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, could ever begin to do. GMG! -
I believe Rick V could have very well had some job offers paying more money and even possibly for other NCAA D1-A adminstrative roles other than that of an AD job. We have to remember that we don't pay the highest salaries on the D1-A block, either. Hopefully, that will change soon. I think if he sticks it in out in Denton and finishes the 200 acre Mean Green Athletic Village, I think he could eventually write his own ticket as to wherever he wants to go among Big Time U jobs that will open in the future. Just my .02...

Best Alternate Location for NO Bowl ?
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Ditto... You've trumped me with this poll, MG61. It's a good poll that is most relevant for all of us in the SBC these days. -
It's a loss but some teams will have to endure similar losses because of injuries, too. Lets see what our young guys can do before we make any forecasts, though. After all, we know we have an offense that is very capable of staying on the field a long time (and eating up that time clock). We should also have another great kicking game this season as well. We have many positives with this team. Many times the troops will also rally when there is a hole in the formation.

Fouts Field has “served its purpose” and does not offer the comfort and services fans are used to, including luxury boxes and club levels – comparable amenities to professional stadiums, Villarreal said. The structure is part of Villarreal’s plan to elevate the athletics department and is joined by a bevy of new sports buildings, primarily for women’s teams, he said. The significance of the new stadium has many implications. “I think our attendance will double overnight,” Villarreal said. It will help the local economy, as part of a “total revitalization plan,” he said. ........................................................................................ I whole-heartedly concur with Rick V. on the attendance part, but I'm not sure the attendance doubles immediately, although I think it improves dramatically and once our new stadium has been open 2 or 3 years, it very well could double. Honest to goodness, I've work in DFW since 1977 and have spoken to NT alums I've met in the workforce who thru the past decades have many times asked me: "When are "THEY" going to build a new football stadium up there?" I really think many of those who said "THEY" will become "WE" once we get that new football stadium finished because many will want to come up and check it out if for nothing else their own curiosity. Many of that group will be hooked on the kind of Game Day we now have at NT (which they've never seen) and just keep on coming back--just like that batter-operated rabbit! The new stadium coupled with winnning Mean Green football teams will generate very much renewed interest among those we've been trying to get back to Denton for years. Many of us are impatient for better attendance, but I still say the Metroplex's booming growth will all but gurarantee that we will be just fine in the attendance department in a few years, especially in our new football venue at Eagle Point Campus. Just my .02... PS Now yall've gone and done it; that is, got me started on new stadium talk!

I think some of us have been a bit tough on LJ with maybe a few (basically) knee-jerk reactions as to what we anticipate he might do with NT and athletics in general. The all but elitist branding procedure at NT a few months ago seemed to be handled exactly like you might think a private university would have done it. Public universities in Texas have open records act they have to follow--private universities like a Duke or an SMU do not. But still the proofs in the pudding because many college administrators have the same kind of skills as many politicians when it comes to telling its constituency exactly what they want to hear. Until "lip service" becomes "do service" the jury will still be out with NT Chancellor (former judge) Lee Jackson. I hope he means what he says concerning athletics.

Of course, our first home game is not until September 17, too.

Does NT Not Having A Game This Saturday Help Us,
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
DG, I look forward to the day that we do NOT open our season (it seems annually now) against "Top 5" NCAA D1-A opponents--notice I didn't say Top 10, but Top 5 ; of course, we need the Mean Green Club to annually raise the kind of monies that will allow NT Athletics to eventually alter this mode of schedule planning, too. Does it bother anyone else (as I'm sure it does) that Rick V has to even say if we didn't play LSU this Fall (which we will), we have to find some way to cover, cut or come up with the $500,000 in our present athletic budget? He should only have to draw from reserves provided by Mean Green Club donors and not even think about a $500,000 budget cut, folks. Of course, most of those who need to know that are not reading this board, either.
