This from the NT Athletic Department's Game Day @ North Texas brochure & the Fan Guide: Fans are encouraged to be in stands 30 minutes prior to kickoff to enjoy the Green Brigade Pregame Extravaganza and welcome the Mean Green to the field with the traditional public address call of: "Heeeeeeeere Come the Mean Green...!" (I will add that they do some very entertaining things with the Daktronics video portion of the scoreboard). ................................................................. Speaking of the Green Brigade, can anyone post a link of what their new unis' look like? GMG!

And according to some who (apparently) are our judges and juries out there, we're all idiots over here at GMG.com. I know what my definition of idiot is and a whole bunch of tongue n' cheek posts over here does not an idiot make. People who take themselves way too serious with NT Athletics, ie, the toy department of all our department stores of something we call life, may be posturing themselves for something close to idiocy, although that still may be too strong a word. IMHO, GoMeanGreen.com is suppposed to be both an info board (for all of us information freaks and if you are reading this post you are probably part of this fraternity) and GMG.com should even be considerred a fun board. We are like a sports bar here at GMG.com. with mucho unadulterated lagniape and tongue and cheek. Anyone ever listen to KCTK 1310 "The Ticket?" They are like a sports bar talking about everything from a women's endowment to some (real) idiot over there who cannot understand or accept that we are no longer NTSU. Anyone who takes a collegiate smack board any other way may be the one lacking in the common sense department, but I wouldn't go as far as to call them an idiot. That's the level that I think other boards have guttered down to. But to answer your question you posted in jest (for all us court jestors out here) we get ranked in the Top 25 when we beat some Top 25 thru Top 50 competition consistently and winning OUR bowl game also helps; but then again, I'm sure I'm telling you something you didn't already know. One of the constant threads you will see with all Top 25 programs are they are well-funded and that because of their alumnus base fundraising groups, ie, for us--the Mean Green Club. Top 25 schools usually have big time football stadiums and ancillery facilities related to football. But I really think the things that will help NORTH TEXAS get to Top 25 status has much to do with 3 particular phrases I often see on this board: JOIN THE MEAN GREEN CLUB BUY SEASON TICKETS & BUILD IT! I spoke with NT Ticket Mgr. Gabe Kirpatrick about 6:30 tonight and he is very pleased with advance ticket sales. At NT, it seems to always be walk-up Game Day ticket sales that determines what kind of crowd we have from past observations with all this.

Sports Network Preview -UNT/Tulsa Game
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Bull hockey ! This horrendous defense of Tulsa (as described by the reporter) almost beat the OU Sooners and in Norman to boot. This reporter needs to wait a few weeks to let our young team develop before he goes out on the limb so much with as much expection for our team. We "ARE" a young football team and that is for certain. Funny how SMU has had a "young" team the last 5 years which I guess means their freshmen 5 years ago had grade problems and are still in the lower classes over on the Hilltop? Tulsa is coming to Fouts Field with coaches, players and fans who believe they will beat the University of North Texas Mean Green. They feel it is their duty as a new CUSA school to do so, too. -

Show em' we are not only unpredictable, but even have a surprise or 2 up our sleeves so.................. PUNT ON 3'RD DOWN FIRST 3 TIMES WE HAVE THE BALL! This will totally confuse the blue and gold-clad Oklahomans and may set them back at least till half time when their coaches would have to get with their team to regroup. GMG! -
For 33 years I have come to expect that; many of you who have been around this longer have to. That is why we build all things at Eagle Point Campus bigger, better, more fan/student friendly and Texas UIL HS play-offs friendly than what Smu has built. SMU is land-locked with their campus location, stadium location and terrible parking. NORTH TEXAS will not be once all the highway infra-structure is in place betwen the 2 Texas interstates where our new football stadium will be located for and for countless tens upon tens of thousand of those commuters who daily travel this part of Texas. SMU will "NOT" (I repeat: WILL NOT) upset Dennis Franchione's TAMU Aggies in Kyle Field and..............................you can print that in 3 inch headlines. GMG!

Called earlier to order chairback seats for my 4 season tickets area and they were back-logged then. In fact, had to leave a voice mail to Gabe Kirkpatrick. So are you saying they feel they are at 20K now without figuring in Game Day walk-up sales? If that is the case, then this is great because I really feel TU will also bring a most representable group from Oklahoma as well as their DFW area Golden Hurricane alumnus group. I've posted 24-25,000 for the NT/TU game with my green-tinted glasses on but who knows--just maybe? Folks, we do kinda' need to draw more than the MUTS now don't we which I think the Blue Raiders and their game with us were close to 21,000? And even SMU who "announced" 22,000 for their game with TCU? We have the reservoir from which to draw to do all this plus a bag of chips if our marketing efforts can just be effective with the demographic groups in Denton and Denton County that it really needs to annually focus on. We have a great product, but I still wonder how many newcomers to the area know about it and know they are invited to be our special guest and join us on the Mean Green bandwagon? We know we will get a good turnout from what was probably another record-breaking NT freshmen class this Fall PLUS all the prior record-breaking frosh classes the last 5 years runnning we should retain many from all of that group. And becaus of all that it really should be translating into more fans at Fouts Field as each year comes around. This thing in Mean Green Country will grow in spite of small athletic marketing budgets--just hide, watch and see! GMG!

Mean Green- soon to be "has been"?
PlummMeanGreen replied to mdmeangreen's topic in Mean Green Football
FAU Coach Howie, Smellin'berger probably sent the sportswriter a $100 bill just to write that! (just kiddin'--sorta) BUT......have any of you noticed that even at the SBC Media Day (and other times) that Coach Howie' hardly even recognizes that anyone outside his school in the 'Belt exists? I cannot yet remember him giving NT any semblance of plaudits for our accomplishments. All I have read about was how he was going to build a new domed stadium and would one day get FAU out of the SBC for a better league...................Well, Coach Howie, make sure you are drinking from Ponce DeLeon's Fountain of Youth somewhere in the Sunshine State because YOU AIN'T NO SPRING CHICKEN, COACH! (I know, yet another idiotic statement from a GMG.com poster). Said it before, but all these newest Florida D1-A football programs seem to put quality football programs together with warp speed. FWIW, we have yet to beat any of those schools starting with FAU last year and USF a few years ago. Honest to goodness, I would have preferred to take a more senior-laden Mean Green team to our, uh, "2" trips to Florida later this season to play FIU and FAU. And briefly on that subject, how the hell did that schedule quirk happen, SBC officials? NT should only have to go to Florida 1 time a year. Duh? Yet this is the most out-of-sync football schedule I can ever remember at NT the almost 4 decades I've followed Mean Green football. Even rescheduling the LSU game has made it even more out-of-sync, but for half a million dollars, we all know that had to be done. I know one particular year when Hayden Fry was in Denton, we only had 4 home games (and I even think 2 of those may have been at Texas Stadium which is IMO the main reason we didn't construct a new stadium when Coach Fry was in Denton. TS didn't work for NT just like it didn't work for SMU. SMU took care of their FB stadium shortfall, we are raising monies now to take car of ours. Anyway, I feel it was NT's continuous dillly-dallying with Texas Stadium as a so-called home stadium all those decades that was the main reason NT "AD" Hayden Fry didn't use his enormous wealth of DFW/Texas high roller contacts to raise monies to build a new stadium; BTW, a stadium that would have probably been 1/4'th the cost of what our new stadium at Eagle Point will end up costing us here in this new millineum. But we are North Texas, we do take our time on some things now don't we? I think a well-placed email to the Italian sportswriter at CFN with all the photos/renderings of what is now going on at NT & our Eagle Point Campus might be in order and (who knows) may even completely alter his thinking to what he seems to think is our imminent downfall. After watching Sir Patrick Cobbs in a recent scrimmage when he returned a kick-off for a TD and even watching him the other night, is it possible that he rehabilitated so successful as to gain a half or full step of speed? Jamario will get his carries this year and next year, he'll get most all of them. I never thought DD would be able to get both of them in for many plays in his playbook, but let's all wait and see, stranger things have happened. This will be a fun team to watch develop and grow up this Fall. I still have no idea how the 3'rd youngest football team in NCAA D1-A got out of the Boro' with that "W." That game was a another bonus for this emerging football program and a football program that is re-tooling right now. Darn we need as close to a full house at Fouts Field for Tulsa as we can get because I think this Saturday our Mean Green football players need to be as impressed with their fan support as most of their fans have been with them as of late. Tulsa Coach Kragthorpe Told UNT To Take A Hike!
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, he made the comments because I was watching the Channel 8 sportscast that evening and it made such an impression on me because (back in that day) I was one who really was hoping Coach "K" would have been interested in the NT job; but like you say: Alls well that ends well. GMG! -
Tulsa Coach Kragthorpe Told UNT To Take A Hike!
PlummMeanGreen posted a topic in Mean Green Football
Of course, this was just after Matt Simon had been fired in Denton and there were those who wanted present Tulsa U Coach "K" to apply for the NT head football coachs's job back then. As NT alums, we are all (sometimes) sensitive and know when someone is being rude or dissing our school even with subtle sarcasm. Well, Tulsa Golden Hurricane Coach Kragthorpe was being very rude to our school back then. He was an assistant coach at TAMU when Simon was fired at NT and his attitude on that video vignette on Dallas' WFAA Channel 8 sportcast was an attitude such as this: "North Texas can stick it where the sun shineth not." GMG! PS: It's no secret that NT and TU compete very heavily against each other in the recruiting wars. This game Saturday at Fouts is important from that standpoint, too. -
SMU football players must have been told they'd all lose their scholarships if they didn't beat the Horned Frogs. I really think TCU watched the Tulsa/OU game last Saturday afternoon which had to deflate their egos; yet I still think any team who goes into Norman and comes out with a win has done something. TCU's Coach Patterson almost seemed to predict this for their game with SMU from all that I read in the FW Star Telegram all last week preceeding this game. Maybe the best part is NT Coach Dickey's good friend and nice guy/SMU Coach Phil Bennett may have bought himself some extended contract years on the Hilltop, yet he still needs to win a few more this year to solidify that. GMG!

Then again, Rick, maybe NORTH TEXAS grad/letterman Jim Rainboldt (here in Cowtown) who owns Tarrant Concrete Company gave dear ol' alma mater a heckuva' deal on the concrete, assuming he got the bid of which he seems to get 99% of all concrete work (ie, UNT Health Science Center) from NT; but all I have to say to that is: All power to NT alum James Rainboldt because its always good to see NT doing business with NT grads. I think our new football stadium is on schedule.

Words of wisdom from the Akron coach
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Could it have been we got beat in last year's NO's Bowl because USM had better (faster) overall talent than NT? Many of us saw our bowl opponent in the 2004 New Orleans Bowl almost dismantle the nationally ranked Cal Golden Bears on ESPN a week or so before they dismantled us. Yet USM has been recruiting at a higher level than NT for several years, although in Mean Green Country we're (only) a quarter of a century behind USM with football related venues, we are at least finally in catch-up mode but USM (today) still has better overall facilities to recruit toward and you can start with I.M Roberts Stadium, their on-campus football stadium. Non DD fans won't like this statement, but what we've asked Darrell Dickey to recruit with facility-wise in todays NCAA D1-A "facilities arm race" the last 7 years and the results he's had in spite of what he had to recruit toward in Denton is something short of a miracle; but again, we are finally catching up facility-wise with the USM's of the college football world. We know there is still room for recruiting improvement, but that is one reason 99% of the Mean Green consituency sorta' think what we are doing on those 200 acres at Eagle Point Campus will dramatically help us in that vital area. $ Also, as far as the University of Southern Miss is concerned, their alums know Big Time athletics is not free or something just to chat about on their message board, but their alums donate to the Golden Eagle Club and buy football season tickets like there's no tomorrow. ....................................................................................................... As Harry recently quoted the great Darrell K. Royal about how out of 3 things concerning the forward pass that 2 things that can happen with the pass are bad, our lower number of passes and those short to medium range high percentage passing game has kept the Mean Green turnovers at a very low ebb. Although it looked like the MUTS were going to kick our butts the other night with all the offense they had, our bend but not break defense still held on and the MUTS in their 5'th atttempt still have 0 wins against the University of North Texas. Middle TN Drew Almost 21,000 vs NORTH TEXAS
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
With all the national publicity we've received in recent weeks, with a 1 & 0 televised start (which are rare in recent years), with the Back-To-Back Mean Green RB's duo press box promo (which according to Hank D. on the DD Show last night) now has "90,000" driving by it daily and with Tulsa U bringing (probably) 2K or more Golden Hurricane fans, "IF" we don't draw over 21K, mrsgreengoblin, I may have to put on some beer goggles of my own. Yet like Emmitt posted, who really knows what we draw, but if somehow NT's promotions and marketing department has been able to garnish the attention of the many Denton County newcomers and citizens, I think we have a crowd we will all be proud of. NT Athletics probably already has some guage to the crowd with pre-season sales for this home opener. I do know whoever shows at Fouts Field will get to watch what will probably turn out to be a pretty good college football game. We do have an interesting team we all get to watch develop in the next few weeks. With their youth, they amazed this alum with a win over the MUTS the other night and that when it looked like the deck was completely stacked against our team. GMG! PS: One of you posted weeks ago how it would be nice if Talons (or some student volunteers) would man the NT athletic golf carts driving all over campus thoughout the week, throwing out free NT T-shirts, schedule posters or whatever. I thought that was a pretty good idea to which ever one of you brought it up on GMG.com. -
I think it essential (especially with the Mean Green having the 3'rd youngest team in the NCAA) that NORTH TEXAS fans come out of the woodwork this Saturday for our game vs the Tulsa U Golden Hurricane. <>*<> In recent years, we've had crowds of 29,000 and a gnat's whisker within 30,000 for home openers at Fouts Field. We've all commented how much nicer Fouts Field is as a venue when most of its seat are filled with fans wearing the green and white. This young Mean Green football team (and its veterans) need to witness a literal Sea of Green clad fans when they come thru the tunnel in our game vs Tulsa U this Saturday night. Will we as fans/alums come through for the 4 times SBC football champions? I know most of you reading this will do your part (and more). Some call it becoming the "12'th Man" with the home stadium crowd literally becoming part of the football game. ** Many of us experienced that when our fans became the 12'th Man when we hosted the NMSU Aggies at Fouts Field 3 years ago. As I periodically watch highlights of the 2002 NT/NMSU game it is still the Fouts Field crowd participation and the unified noise we all created that still impresses me the most (and all that for sure impressed our Mean Green football players who fed off of that kind of fan support and noise). Of course, the play on the field that afternoon was lights out! I hope the 2005 Mean Green football season is the one we start seeing all the newcomers/new citizens of Denton and Denton County, ie, potential new fans/new faces jump on the Mean Green football bandwagon. As many of you on this board have attested by your own testimonials after you showed for your first NT football game, once these newcomers show for their first Game Day at Fouts Field I feel we will all be able to say: We Got Them (and they'll be coming back)! GMG!

IMHO, Jamario Thomas would transfer to the NFL before he'd transfer to any other NCAA school besides the one he's at. JT"s mother (basically) said last year that her son will be at NORTH TEXAS as long as he plays college ball. GMG!

Really Strange - Am I In The Twilight Zone?
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
You're traveling through another dimension--a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: the MEAN GREEN ZONE! GMG! -
As we have all been reading lately, a team does show more improvement between the 1'st game to the 2'nd. We have 2 Mean Green RB's who will (in the same game) have a dual "coming out party" and I think the Tulsa Golden Hurricane game (at Fouts) may be that game. I think Meager (pronounced "m-A-ger") will show marked improvement vs Tulsa. He he had a good game vs MT; but to quote Coach Dickey in tonights radio show, Daniel had a good game--but not a great game. I think the great game is around the corner, though, but probably not the Tulsa game. No news here, but we are the 3'rd youngest team in NCAA D1-A according to the MGRN guys, and so we have to take that into consideration. Mean Green Nation as the 12'th Man? That could make a difference in this game. NT....24 TU....17

I think there are more feelings like the aforementioned post by ntmeangreen11 because of GMG.com than the (so called) idioitic ones. There are some on our campus who call us idiots because we support NT Athletics, but when those alums who stayed interested (& involved) in NT because of athletics AND then......... give said academic department a very nice cash gift, I suppose that alum's IQ goes up quite suddenly. Hey! This is a college smack board. Its supposed to be crowded with Mean Green homers (sue us!) and supporters for their school's varsity athletic teams. This is not the Starbucks crowd here. We are not of the social climbing crowd here. We don't walk around with our noses up in the air (while hoping for no rain). If you read Mad magazine, you get the world according to the Alfred E. Newmans of this world. If you read Cosmopolitan, you get the world according to all the Helen Gurley Browns of this world. If you read Playboy and never look at the photos........well, nevermind, didn't mean to go there. GMG.com is what it is. Its a collegiate smack and flame board. Some of us know more about our alma mater because of this forum than NT could have ever afforded to mail to us such info over a period of time, maybe years. If you notice, some at the University of North Texas even have our emails because of GoMeanGreen.com, because most of us have never sent our email addresses to our alma mater's data bases. www.GoMeanGreen.com in a recent month had millions of hits for that one month. Maybe Harry, Cerebus or Illuvius can give us the specifics of those numbers? Who knows, there may be more (lurkers and posters) who check out GMG.com than the Denton Record-Chronicle! BUT.........if you don't like idiotic boards, I guess you'd have to be an idiot to keep on reading one. There are those who read this message board from our campus who swear they don't read any of this, but when you are on campus and in a conversation with some of that group, you know by some of the things they say to you that they would have had to be readers of GMG.com to say some of those very things they have commented on. This board has helped build comraderie among those who need that more than others. It has helped put faces to names. GMG.com posts have pissed off some among the MG Nation, but most of us on this board just are not the kind who stay pissed. On GoMeanGreen .com we have a pretty fair micro-cosm of NT alumnus thought and attitude. Some paid employees on campus don't like that so they put together their own little rubber-stamp groups who are usually not a fair representation of what NORTH TEXAS is really about at all. GoMeanGreen(.com)!
-
Very interesting...Thanks for the info. GMG!
-
Some on this message board, ie, GMG.com have forgotten more about the University of North Texas and Mean Green Athletics than this Pulitzer Prize non-winner will ever stay in Denton long enough to learn. Hellsbells, FWIW, some in the Denton Record/Chronicle Sports Department the last few years have probably even had to refer to this board for info or even probably got a few ideas for some of their feature articles. Of course, you would never receive an admission to the truth of that matter!
