  1. JD, IMHO, UNT and Denton is a music factory and will never have a dearth of music talent whether it be groups or soloists. In fact, wonder who our next Norah Jones is going to be? My bet is she is strolling around Avenue C and beyond as we all post.
  2. On my drive home from work last evening, KTCK 1310 The Ticket's Hardline boys during the Snake's community quick hits gave several minutes of air time to all the happenings and controversey concerning Denton's Fry Street and the complete make-over it is apparently soon to get. They all had mixed emotions on all this but all seemed upset that "The Tomato" might soon be history. Question: Are any of the older bldgs. on Fry St of such a historical nature that they could be listed on the National Register? At least, maybe the first head shop in the north Texas region? Ol' Fry Steet just won't look the same w/o that price-less facility. (uh, just jokin' of course)...
  3. Hey, Texas Tech just downright stole Jerry Moore away from us back in 1980 after ol' Jere' took Fry talent and made it very average in only 2 years. So maybe the Techsters will look back at the success of that "steal" and then hire ol' LJ away from us? Hold it! Wait a minute, let me re-evaluate that thought; you know, the Jerry Moore part of that thought? Prediction: LJ will be with us for awhile longer. His main strength is in the DFW Metroplex, not at home on the range where the deer and the antelope play (when not blinded by a west Texas dust storm, that is).
  4. I am touched and saddened by the Aggie's plight. Should we send them a collective MG love offering to help out the cause? If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry CHRISTmas.................One of my all time "what if" wishes is "what if" that 1870's Texas legislature included a clause that would have "later on" added a northern Texas university to the Permanent University Fund? You know, a northern Texas university that would be established in the near future, like perhaps, circa 1890, for instance?;(
  5. Many nostalgic & most memorable mammories from my Fry Street experience. 316 Fry Street was my mail address for my first couple of years in Denton, Texas, America. Did any of you ever live off (or near) Fry Street? What an eclectic environment and era at UNT especially as Nixon was ending the Viet Nam war. NT Ex former Eagle Don Henley in an article I read about 2 years ago said when he and his family are at their Dallas home that he has driven up to campus on numerous occassions to (I presume) soak in his own recollections of his Denton days. He also said he still visits a couple of former professors when he makes his visits back to campus.
  6. As in Mexia's Anna Nicole Smith, perhaps?
  7. Hey Phil, is that the stadium in Canada where about 40,000 baseball fans once got quite an EYE FULL from the couple in one of that stadium's hotel rooms which over-looked the field?
  8. Rick, I think "The Original" Mexican Inn folks came up with "The Original" when the other Mexican Inns started springing up around Fort Worth. Those who owned "The Original" Mexican Inn folks wanted everyone in Cowtown to know that they were (in deed) the first one. At least that is one story I've heard on this subject. Try the "Roosevelt Dinner" entree next time you visit "The Original." I guess I've eaten at all the other Mexican Inn locations in FW thru the years. PS: Red and green type in honor of the Mexican flag, of course.
  9. To quote the great Keith Jackson: WHOA NELLIE! If our new prez' is a "she" and she out does Norval Pohl with her support of athletics, all power to her and a statue in her honor upon her retirement would more than be in order! Some of the other "what ifs" are interesting, though.
  10. REVISED Aquilis_Viridis, if your expectations for the 2006 season are met and we even became a Top 50 school because of it, I think many would have to re-evaluate their present concerns of MG football completely. Personally, I don't see those being met and I know others who say the same but just won't publicly post it on GoMeanGreen.com. Still (in this great country of ours) there is the freedom to have a change of heart or a change of mind. One asked me just today just what was it that changed my own mind with the direction of this current MG football program and as to why my posts became much different than how they had been about this time last year. There is a simple answer to that: Start with 2 strategic losses to 2 schools that a "4 years in a row" bowl program like UNT's should have (at least) been competitive. One of those 2 losses was the worst loss in Fouts Field history and that versus the Tulsa Golden Hurricane AND then............our going to Ruston, LA, to get schooled by a school many had previously thought we had been out-recruiting the last 3-4 years or you know, as during our "bowl years" when no mid-major from this region should have come even close to UNT with their recruiting classes' quality, especially those (which mean't most of them) who hadn't even been to a bowl game or it had been umpteen years since they had gone to a bowl. Yet had we actually been out-recruiting La Tech during our string of bowl years, it surely didn't translate on the football field. So all that was a giant wake-up call for me (and FWIW, many, many, many others as well). Other things I won't elaborate on with this post are recent bowl losses to "4'th place" CUSA teams, losses to future SBC schools during years we went bowling as the SBC rep and...............DD's non-stop public relation gaffes and verbal gestures on post game radio shows that have appalled even the most casual of NT fans. As another posted, I think by the end of this September/first part of October we will know all we need to know about the direction of this football program and how it stacks up outside the SBC. Outside the SBC? The SBC can never be a barometer for UNT football because if it ever came to that, we will be dead in the water as a viable NCAA D1-A football program and stuck in the bottom quadrant of NCAA D1-A; we will never receive any respect across the USA, but even more important than that, across the almighty sovereign state of Texas where most of us on this board live and work. Next Fall, we can all hope for the best, but we sorta' did that when we played Tulsa and La Tech just last Fall, now didn't we?
  11. Any NT Ex wants to see any other NT Ex succeed & get their fair share of the American pie no matter where we stand concerning NT Athletics--agreeing or disagreeing. Keep us updated, untgirl04...
  12. Good post, flyonthewall... I think we all (basically) want the same things for UNT, its just we sure as hell have so many different methods on how we think we can attain all that we want to happen in MG Country during our lifetimes. Of course, from a discussion standpoint, that is what makes Harry Miers UNT oriented sports board, ie, GoMeanGreen.com so darn interesting to read most the time, eh? Also, I guess we all have to remind ourselves from time to time that we are (in deed) on the same side with all this and how we all want dear ol' alma mater to be seen in a good light in every aspect. Yet we all know (no matter what era we attended NT) how marvelous & wonderful that (eventual) new football stadium is going to look as it sparkles on that rolling Texas prairie of prime interstate real estate located at the apex of the Dallas/Fort Worth triangle with Denton, Texas, America at the tip of the triangle that culminates at Texas Interstates 35-E and 35-W. Could there possibly ever be a better location for such a new college football stadium than a location off those 2 interstates that has almost 65,000 cars that pass by that area daily at last TxDOT count? Many of us know some older nestors on this board who have followed all this almost a half century (or more) that we can all only hope get to see such a stadium @ Eagle Point Campus. IMO, they deserve to have that ultimate satisfaction as much as anyone in the entire UNT community.
  13. UNTFan23, I still think we are talking about 2 different restraunts as "The Original" is not far from the corner of Hulen and Camp Bowie in the Arl. Hts neighborhood and one can see UNTHSC very easily from that locale. Now there is a Mexican Inn further west on Camp Bowie and I think that may be the one you are thinking about?
  14. Amen... I know an older alum who not so long ago said there were anywhere from 11-13 NT Exes ready to give $1,000,000.00 each toward a new stadium, but then our direction seemed to vascillate (again). UNT will get a new football stadium in time, it's just the Big Donor-types have to see a solid, upwardly bound (D1-A) direction and plan of action that won't change when present employees move on and we have new hirings (and new athletic philosophies) in Denton. I don't think many of us would blame them for that attitude, either. Dr. Pohl's resignation just seemed to set our momemtum back and I think many even on this most diverse forum of opinion would agree with that. Our new president will either make us or break us, but I just don't see any UNT BOR's with a Bobby Ray or a C. Dan Smith as members who would have any part of hiring a president who is going to take us back to the dark ages (athletically) once again. Granted, I've expressed more than my share of pointed opinions concerning Mr. Ray's handling of certain matters at UNT, but in my heart of hearts I do believe the man knows the importance of an upward bound major college sports program at our (and his) alma mater.
  15. Bill, would that be the one "down by the school yard" (to quote part of a Paul Simon song lyric)? Unce Julio's swirls (a frozen margarita with a swirl of frozen sangria) aren't too bad to sip on as your party is in their holding area waiting to get seated. And as some of you would know, that can be up to 45 minutes on some nights, but well worth the wait.
  16. Whoops! LongJim, I forgot about El Rancho Grande on North Main (toward Billy Bob's Texas for you non-Fort Worthians). And Caro's over near Horned Frog Country as I don't get over to that neighborhood much anymore, but don't they have some most unique "puffy" chips to go with their hot sauce as I recall? BTW, if any Mexican restraunt doesn't have good chips and hot sauce, they immediately go off my list! LOL!
  17. Hasn't it been said that a free agent contract can be as good or better than the contracts of those who get drafted in the last round of the NFL draft? Sir Patrick Cobbs deserves a shot in the NFL and I think he will get it. No one deserves to have success than the great Patrick Cobbs. And as an honors student, I sure as hell bet he scored much higher than a 5 on the Wonderlic, too! )(Sorry, LongJim, I had to slip that one in).
  18. 15 minutes?!?! HUH?!? If you were in a horse and buggy or a mule team driven covered wagon then maybe 15 minutes! LOL! UNTFan23, remember now, we are talking about the brick portion of Camp Bowie Blvd where "The Original" (not to be confused with other "Mexican Inn" locations) is located since West Camp Bowie now stretches all the way out to west Loop 820 (and then for sure with all those gol' darn traffic lights you post about). In fact, I used to live in the neighborhood close to "The Original" (Arlington Heights), but I'll be honest, I never really clocked it from UNTHSC to that Mexican eatery, but in the "pre_Mayfest" hail-storm Audi 4000S Quatro I had when I lived there..........5 minutes easily." Now you have my curiosity up and I'll have to just go time it in the next few days!
  19. SilverEagle's listing of "The Original" (Mexican Inn) just off the brick portion of Fort Worth's famous Camp Bowie Boulevard (& not far from UNT-HSC) brought back many memories and used to be a regular stop for me and friends. Back then I knew the owners (a husband and wife team). Have no idea who owns that eatery today as I haven't been there in awhile........BUT one of my favorite entrees I almost always ordered was called the "Roosevelt Special" named in honor of FDR's son, Elliott Roosevelt, who along with his Fort Worth family used to be regulars at "The Original" back in the day.
  20. Bill, I know the perfect place you can bring some of those "SilverEagle's" fajitas and that happening on May 20'th (if you get my drift).
  21. As all of you from the FW/Tarrant County area would know, you couldn't go wrong by planning a night out at Uncle Julios. Best fajitas in the area IMHO. Haven't been to Joe T's in a while, but remember when one of their turquoise-colored margaritas could sure give you a quick buzz and 2 of em' would put some under the table. Growing up on the golden Gulf Coast of Texas I can remember the huge replica of a crab on the roof of Guidos. Food at Guidos was good back in the 1960's and a place called the San Jacinto Inn (near the Bolivar Ferry) sure served up some good fried chicken, too. Any of you Houston area alums/fans remember Bill Bennett's (or was it Bill Williams?) Restraunts? They had 1 or 2 in Houston and 1 in Rosenberg, Texas, as I recall. It was where our football team would have many post-game meals heading back home on those Friday nights (and all expenses covered by our high school coffers).
  22. untgirl04, any updates on your husbands teachers job search? Any of you school administrators have any openings for next Fall?
  23. FFR, for certain, back in the dark ages when I was an NTSU student (among 17,000 others in the early to mid 70's) our BOR had to ultimately approve increased fees with NT parking decals. Of course, I think back then they must have printed up about 20K of those for 17K students with actual parking for about 6,000! Last time I was in Denton, I am most positive I saw an NTSU student from my era still making those non-stop repetitive drives around key parking areas still trying to find that perfect up-close parking spot!
