  1. Everyone for having FirefightnRick put a cannon ball in ol' Boomer to fire the first shot at any section of the Fouts Field press box side as the first official act of Fouts Field Demolition Day say: Hell, yeah! GMG!
  2. 'Twould be interesting to check out houstonmeangreen's family tree, SUMG. He does seem a tad 'over the top' bitter with some of his other posts, too, especially when they concern Todd Dodge. GMG!
  3. He who hesitates loses. A lesson we seemed to have not learned forever at UNT--except for maybe now at this time in our history? Seems we hesitated a bit with a new football stadium while we were all having a rip-roaring time on that Mean Green Roller Coaster Ride of the past 30 years of trying to find our athletic identity, ya' think? Texas & DFW Mormons would buy enough tickets for a UNT/BYU game at our new stadium to probably fund our Womens' Softball program for a fiscal year; of course, we could always bring in Stephen F. Austin 'Jacks & wonder why they didn't bring more fans, too. The great thing about our AD, one Rick Villarreal, is that most of the ideas many of us come up with on GMG.com, he's already thought of staying one step ahead of the rest of us! I would bet the same on this thing with BYU.
  4. If Canales is such a hot property, why doesn't he already have a head football coaching gig? We of UNT are not the best at picking HFC's who take us to the level befitting what one past UNT coach laid out as worthy (higher profile) goals for our school. Folks, we are closing in on 40,000 students, lets start acting like it. If we don't some of you Young Gun Alums are going to wake up & suddenly be 60 years of age and asking yourselves: What the hell have we been doing up here the last 30 years anyhow? DD won 5 in his 4'th year in the inaugural year of the SBC so...........before this forum starts replacing Dodge, seriously, lets at least wait till most of the SBC conference in Dodge's 4'th season is done. We sorta' owe him that in light of recent, past scenarios, right? No matter what happens, we also need not to hack off Texas HS Football Coach's Association with their perception of how we treated one of their more successful collegues, ie, Todd Dodge, right? Our recruiters still need to be welcome at the majority of Texas HS campuses in other words. I think TDodge probably has to win 6 or win the SBC because in many ways, the stakes are higher now inasmuch as this school (after almost 40 years--post NT Prez' Jitter Nolen)) has made a (more than the usual lip service) committment to the future with an approximate $100 million stadium committment (which is probably what it will be after its all done, said & completed) and that out at our fabulous Mean Green Athletic Village. If CUSA visits us for possible future openings & if turned down, I think we would all want to know why UNT does not fit their criteria this time around leaving all the political bull-crapola out of that discussion; especially in light of what UNT can do to deliver actual TV ratings in a huge market brimming full of people connected with the UNT community. If Dodge doesn't git'r done, we move on & hire a new coach that I hope the UNT Holy Tribunal of our Prez, our AD and hired hand consultant have much deliberation & discussion. No one at any level at UNT should have a lifetime contract for the continuoul perserverance of blantant & obvious mediocrity. We (still) are not a retirement center for good ol' boys. GMG!
  5. We need to be on the phone ASAP scheduling some home & homes with BYU to come to the newest & nicest college football stadium in the approx. 8 million citizen populated Metroplex and UNT's........New Stadium @ The Mean Green Village. (TCU may tell them to take a hike)? GMG!
  6. CougarBlue.com says Indy' is a done deal. GMG!
  7. One thing about it, UNT had 3 (or 4?) NCAA National Championship Golf teams who used to train on some of that area where our football palace is being built. Might be a nice gesture to find a name that honors that legacy. GMG!
  8. We need to hope UNT hired hand, ie, consultant Chuck Neinas is burning the midnight oil during these times. GMG!
  9. No, I am no Nostro'dumass, but I posted that this (still) might happen. Of course, the fact that the WAC's Commish Karl Benson did not give up till the 13'th hour with BYU made many of us think this possible. I felt if BYU did not do this this year, it would be next. Instability with all these leagues may eventually be our best ally. We still have to take care of our business at UNT, though. This move is still most intriguing to me. Lets see how Indy' works out for BYU. One ESPN mogul said that if there is any one school that can make it work, it would be BYU. GMG! PS: TCU's Gary Patterson was livid with the possibility of this happening--hope it's not the beginning of a bad week for him. I suppose it shows that the (now) instability of the MWC affects those N.C. chances down the way for his Horned Frogs? They do lose a perennial Top 25 school out of their conference and that has to hurt.
  10. After Year 4, DD was 5 & 7 in a brand new conference with some schools just up from 1-AA with UNT hosting the first NO's Bowl. BUT THIS TIME AROUND... I think the stakes are different with the investment of approx $100 million toward a new stadium for the 2011 football season: My gut feeling would tell me that Coach Dodge has probably been asked to win 6 overall games and/or win the SBC on the eve of our new stadium's debut. We rarely beat the top ranked or the Clemson's of our schedules in the past, but come Rice U. versus the University of North Texas next week in Denton, our team needs to charge out of the tunnel at Fouts Field's last home season opener like Sam Houston & his Texicans did when they charged on their horses across the Texas wetlands as never before & at General Antonio de la Santa Anna, ie, the self-annointed Napoleon of the West & his army........and then with our Todd Dodge & his Mean Green having the same results as Sam Houston'army did with a "take no prisoners" approach and that----with our game against the Rice University Owls next week in Denton. Hellsbells! I'm looking forward to being at that game. GMG!
  11. Green sounds nice until TWU chases all their millions of black birds to "OUR" new stadium's treed area and then it will become what we used to call Gator-ade in its earliest days.......green.......uh, sheeee'it! "Ethel! watch where you're stepping, dearest!" GMG!
  12. By Year 4 A Coach in the SBC Should Be At or Above .500 IMHO... Coach Dickey's Year By Year W/L Record 1998 North Texas 3–8......Conf 3-2 T-2nd 1999 North Texas 2–9......Conf. 1-5 7th 2000 North Texas 3–8......Conf. 1-4 T-3rd 2001 North Texas 5–7......Conf. 5–1 1'st 2002 North Texas 8–5......Conf. 6–0 1'st 2003 North Texas 9–4......Conf. 7–0 1'st 2004 North Texas 7–5......Conf. 7–0 1'st 2005 North Texas 2–9......Conf. 2–5 7th 2006 North Texas 3–9......Conf. 2–5 7th Total: 42–64
  13. Heavy rain and mucho mud (back in the day of grass fields) has been a great equalizer for many at every level of football. My alma mater's HS football team southwest of Houston played a school (Van Vleck, Texas) for our Homecoming Game one seaason; we thought we'd get blown out until we had one of those monsoons blow through from the Gulf and next thing we knew we had tied our districts favorite. It ended in a tie which could acually happen back in the day when Abe Lincoln was president. I heard Abe was even a great fan of Texas High School football, too. (See what happens when you've over-dosed on a summer's worth of green kool-ade)?
  14. "The Treed Area @ The Mean Green Village" until we find it a corporate sponsor? GMG!
  15. Troy and CUSA? It's would be an eastern footprint school (which is our main "location" bug-a-boo); Troy has a re-built fairly nice looking stadium (yet no camparison with UNT's since ours was built from scratch & is not a make-over from an existing stadium). Troy's admission standards might not set well with most of CUSA but who the heck knows what these non BCS league criteria's truly are anymore. In a sense, Troy would be a travel partner with UAB-Birmingham. (I think East Carolina would chose Troy U over La Tech because of easier/closer access, too). Just my .02 GMG!
  16. IT'S ANOTHER MEAN GREEN.....................missed field goal! (Oh, wait a minute, the referee now says it was good! HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN, MEAN GREEN FANS! Seriously, once our young field goal kicker learns to kick field goals w/o a tee (which they do in TX HS FB), I think we will be fine (or at least better than what we've been lateley which has been.......not so good). GMG!
  17. Can you only imagine if UNT with all our super-mega modern facilities located on most impressive (strategicically placed) real estate (and pleny of it for future construction); anyway, wouldn't it be a shot heard round'some part of the NCAA world if UNT were to get the nod over La Tech for CUSA? And then more bad news for La Tech like.........the WAC disipates like a like a single raindrop in the hot Western U.S. sun? Then.......would it be time to send bus loads of shrinks and counselors to Ruston? Honest to goodness, I almost feel sorry for La Tech's present predicament, but their overal arrogance & self-importance among many of their elect leaves it at the; that is, at the "almost feel sorry" stage for me. It is very possible that CUSA could show no interest in either of our schools the way NCAA politics among some conferences are allowed to rear its ugly head during these re-alignment scenarios or discussions. Yet, the best part in all this for UNT is that we no longer have to show potential conferences who might be interested in us just architectural renderings or photos of future athletic venues.
  18. GTTB, didn't know it was that far inland but I rarely look at state maps outside Texas. So I suppose the worst case scenario would be lots and lots of rain if Earle hits the Carolinas. GMG!
  19. The cable news folks are painting a terrible scenario with this massive storm. Albeit they are saying further up the eastern seaboard, those of us who grew up (or still live by) hurricane country know the slightest directional change would bring it closer to the Carolinas.
  20. The season of drinking our green kool-ade is drawing to a close. Why can't we find schools ranked 50-100 for our first game, albeit we know such games are our tradition and we are probably going to make a bundle for this game. Just enjoy the game for what it is--look for some bright spots and hope that we discover we have a field goal kicker out of this game. GMG! PS: Our Bottom 10 ranking on other thread? We need to beat Rice to get out that poll, but this ranking will make our next 3-4 year rise from the NCAA ashes even more dramatic--just won't start this particular Saturday, that's all.
  21. Yeah, but UTEP's TV market? Probably doesn't matter because look at CUSA's flirtation with La "no TV market whatsoever" Tech? Last I read, the ESPN's of this world are really interested in conferences that have wide spread TV markets with schools in those markets who can actually pull good ratings in said TV market. GMG! The time that I edited this post is in the humongous blue bar below.
  22. The TCU fan I ran into yesterday told me the cheapest ticket is $45 for their game at Cowboy Stadium. He said it is killing ticket sales for the Horned Frog's game versus Oregon State. I asked him why so high and he said it was Jerry Jone's call on ticket prices for that game. He said it's going to look like no one is inside that stadium for that game. Jerry's World aka Cowboy Stadium? That doesn't sound like a good place for anyone to play a college football game unless your Texas, OU, TAMU or whoever. GMG!
  23. Now that is one of the most profound truths (and funniest lines) ever expressed on www.GoMeanGreen.com. I am at a McDonalds trying not to laugh my head off here). GMG! PS: To GMG.com webmeisters: Why do "edits" have to be so prominently displayed? It makes me feel like that one of my "sins" is being magnified for all to see. IMO, theCUSA BBS board has the right idea on the "size" of edits. Just curious about this...PMG
