If UTSA can do some local politics and bring the Alamo Bowl (or whatever its called this year) to the SBC then thumbs up. If they can't I prefer La Tech and New Mexico State. I'm a-feared only way La Tech would join is if they had guns pointed to their heads by Wright Waters (who I believe gentleman enough to where if La Tech ran out of every option available once the WAC disipates he would probably accomodate the 'Dawgs and even w/o their having to grovel to get in, too). Poor WW,he can't help if he's commish' of a league where so many schools see it has a holding tank sort of thing until something better comes along. Of course, that seems to be the case with most all the FBS leagues, now doesn't it? GMG!

And maybe a few IV's in the stands, too? Some of us have not been working out at Bally's like we should have. GMG! PS: This evening I'm DJ'ing a Wedding reception of which the dance portion will be at an outdoor pavilion and I am not looking forward to all the heat-idity, either.

JayDub, a sincere thank for posting this very informative and thought-proving thread. Amazing, Villeunova (sp?) was a school we once took a couple of players when they dropped football back in the early 80's and now they may get a Big East invite? What the hell is fair in any of this, folks! I felt UNT should have made its move 25 years ago (as in a new D1 stadium) but my gold mine still hadn't panned out at that time, either. Like UH's plans seen on another thread, many of us also felt our initial stadium size should probably have been closer to 40K. (You wonder if we can build the "beaut" we have going up now that there would have to be some more revenue for just 5-10,000 more seats? I think stadium size will come into play eventually and sure we can expand in the sweet by and by but at UNT in the past, the sweet by and by seems to have always gone the way of.......bye! bye! IMHO, you cannot blame any of today's UNT staff from top to bottom for our present predicament and present athletic conference we reside; in fact, you have to go way back to put the finger on anyone if one wants to do that but for the moment that is not even important and is a time-waster. BUT..........we should all be very glad we have Chuck Neinas (along with all his friends in high places) advising us and hopefully he will get an extension to his contract at UNT. I like the very aggressive AD Rick Villerreal during such times and our interim president of whom you all say is a keeper, too, as far as progressing our athletic program. But my answer to every bit of this for now is: KingDL1 aka Tony, bring even more beer tomorrow than previously planned. Tell me how much I need to bring and we'll all have 1 more than we probably should have as we discuss all the "woulda-coulda's" of our alma mater. On the other hand: I think UNT does have a bright future no matter whats going on because one day our humongous numbers will also come into play once we figure out of way of getting everyone from the UNT community on the same page at one time. GMG!

With the stakes high in Dodge's 4'th year to get a contract extension (but mostly keep his job) my bet is he will go with who he thinks will help him win games on a given Game Day. I would also guess that Fortenberry will probably get plenty of playing time this Fall, too. With high humidity expected tomorrow with a high heat index at kick-off, UNT coaches may need to substitute often as it is. As the evening goes by we should have cooler temperatures, though. GMG!

You seem connected to inside information type stuff, but any final Fall enrollment figures? Also wonder what the enrollment of our UNT Freshmen Class is this Fall, too? You know Freshmen will come out by the droves for this game. Wonder if last years will? GMG!

PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
I believe I read on their board they are going to tear down Jepphesson/Robertson Stadium and start from scratch. When the Houston Oilers started AFL play in 1960 they did it at Jepphesson Stadium aka Robertson Stadium. That stadium used to be the Houston ISD main HS stadium, too. It probably needs to have the same fate as Fouts Field will soon have. -
Whats all this rain talk? Has there been a weather change for Saturday? Last I heard was 90, humid but no rain in sight. GMG!

Wonder how many more renderings will come forth for UH before they actually get a look as to what their football stadium will really look like upon completion? As Mark Levine on his radio show says: OK, THERE I SAID IT! Albeit I am a bit bias, but I still like UNT's stadium's final rendering much better than the one I see at the top of this page. Looks like their endzone has more seating than their sideline seats. GMG! -

PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Jeez, I'd hate to think just 10,000 more seats cost $42 million extra dollars. Looks like that $42 million will give them a few more whistles and bells, though. Anyone else get the feeling that in other collegiate outposts across Texas that others knew what North Texas had planned over at the Mean Green Village? When my inheritance, gold mine, publishing clearinghouse sweepstakes win or oil derrick hits black gold UNT will get their 40,000 (insert sublimenal "magic" number for future BCS schools) seat stadium, but until then I guess I have to keep working most weekends in the DJ business so I can pay the bills. Never mentioned it to anyone associated with UNT who I know until now, but my modest retirement, ie, 401K from 25 years in the private tech school business took a similar path (but not as controversial) as the Enron folks coupled with the Wall Street fiasco which affected many Americans. Oh well, stuff happens. GMG! -
And the things you're saying about the possible new Super BCS is the very reason I had hoped UNT's initial stadium capacity would have immediately removed us from the other cast of FBS thousands who have 30,000 seat stadiums; like for UNT's new football palace to have been at least 35,000 seats with a 40,000 expansion attainable fairly quickly. The Big Boys used stadium size before and whose to say they won't do it again with this Super BCS? They have to use some things to cull some schools out and thats what they did when there was a D-1A and D1-AA albeit a different era. Not that any of the aforementioned would save us from the TV greedy possible Super BCS, either, but at least it separates us from those we need to really be separated from of which stadium size is a large criteria that so many in the NCAA have used in the past. I know, this all sounds a bit heady & conceited, with all this "separating us from our present crowd" talk but we don't get anywhere at a school like our alma mater eating humble pie all decade long and saying "awe shucks" while looking down at our shoe laces with our fingers jammed up our noses; all this with an attitude of we don't deserve better for ourselves and our school because the media and college fan boards say we don't tommyrot. JayDub, get your ar$e back down here in Texas. You know you miss us! Dodge: He is more comfortable with his situation than most on this board. Fact is, if he doesn't meet the criteria for numbers of wins this Fall--he's gone and we hire a new coach; but still there are many of us who like those horse races when the one at the back of the pack passes the rest and wins the race at the wire. And then some want his butt out of here just like most did DD after his last 2 losing seasons accompanied by some very poor (compared to the rest of the "lowly" SBC) recruiting classes which (if truth be known & told) didn't help Dodge in his first 2 years at UNT............. BUT.............I KNOW--NO EXCUSES!!!! GMG! -
Keep in mind we have the equivalent of several thousand new season ticket purchasors, ie, the new (I'm sure) record-breaking UNT Freshmen Class of Fall, 2010. Uusally if we break our all time enrollment for an upcoming Fall (which we just did) that most the time translates to our largest freshmen class ever, too. 27,777............(think "7" team)! PS: Wonder just how large this new freshmen class is? Has the 12'th day come and gone for our official enrollment? Don't worry, I will not start another thread on that subject. PS II: Both schools received a lot of hype with decently played games which were both televised on ESPNU last Saturday and of course, since we have to depend on GMG.com threads with the subject of radio talk show hosts helping us get out the crowd at Fouts Field we can all collectively thank Mark Davis of WBAP for doing his part, too. (just kiddin', shaft, only just kiddin')

Toby has hit a home run in describing UNT and Rice U--where they've been and where they are now. I am officially worried about this game after reading this article. GMG!

My late sainted oldest sister (Nina) was good friends with Susan Garrett Baker, whose husband is James H. Baker, III, former Secretary of State during the Reagan years. Baker is a Rice U alum. James H. Baker's (III) great grandfather was one of Rice University's founding fathers as I recall a part of their history. (Somewhere in my photo collection I have an old black & white Fox photo of my Sis' and Susan). NOTE: Some of you Rice U & Owl fans who may be reading this thread may want to know that "Harry" who is the pioneer/founder of www.GoMeanGree.com is the nephew of Ms. Harriet Miers of whom this nation should have insisted that all their electorates back home put that fine lady in the Supreme Court. It was America's loss. (OK, no more politics from here on, Harry). Rice U had many grads who were chemists at Dow Chemical Company (Freeport) where my dad worked for almost 40 years. I knew one of them from back then at Dow family picnics near Lake Jackson, Texas. A Short Dow Chemical Co. Story: During the Viet Nam war, I never knew that where my dad worked was making napalm (sp?). I asked him about that years later and he said that they were all sworn to secrecy as to what took place at Dow as would be the case at any plant that had goverment contracts. I was duly impressed how successful they kept their secret about napalm for sure. Addendum: I also knew a girl from Argyle, Texas, who graduated from Rice U. and...ex Rice Owl QB King Hill was from my home county of Brazoria County--he played at Brazosport HS (Freeport) and was a pretty successful QB with Jess Neely's Owls. You a Democrat or somethin' ? Actually, he was coming up to Denton to see his daughter who is a Freshmen and was excited he was going to get to support her new school's football team? Ya' think we might have room for a new fan at Fouts? Most appreciate the free publicity Mark gave us as he spoke about his daughter on the clear channel WBAP-AM (FM) radio. Also, wonder how much a UNT/Rice football game promo spot would have cost UNT if they would have had to pay for what Mark gave us free on "THAT" station? I mean come on now, Mark Davis brief mention of our UNT/Rice game was a blip on the WBAP radar screen compared to what WBAP listners get from Morning Show personality Hal Jay's constant barrage of TCU, TCU, TCU, TCU, TCU, TCU, TCU, TCU, TCU, TCU! WORST EVER? Bob Tyler's 1 win career as HFC at UNT was the low water mark for this alum. There have really only been 1 or 2 other low marks with the entire program since I graduated from UNT 34 years ago. The new stadium being built & opening next Fall has been like a giant vitamin booster shot for many of us. I think those we lost the day UNT declared NCAA 1-AA status will start slowly but surely showing up again. GMG! -
Great post, untjim... Many of us have been fighting this media coverage (or lack, thereof) thing for 3 or 4 (or more) decades. It has been a real source of frustration for UNT'ers from every era--but to tell the truth, its mostly been our fault with our non-stop inconsistent ways in Denton. (Heck, we've really even never settled on a green color scheme for athletics, either). It seems every time in the past UNT made 1 giant step forward--it would then take 3 giant steps backwards. One poster on this board I highly respect because of his years following this program always used to say its always been about the lack of an infra-structure at UNT; that is, we never had one on which to build anything solid as far as football was concerned. We did way too my dilly-dallying with the way we handled athletics at UNT and we paid for it dearly with the DFW media. They never really knew when to take UNT serious when it came to athletics, especially football. Scruggs is just doing what all his predeccessors did with his "no respect of UNT" thing. For most of the last few decades, we have truly been Rodney Daingerfield State U for all practical purposes---------NO RESPECT. We'll all be saying this more and more in the next 12 months--but the New Stadium @ the Mean Green Village will play a huge part in finally giving UNT a legitimate infrastructure on which to build toward the future. Even some of our media friends will begin to believe us now about our intent with Mean Green football because of this new football palace. Sure we should have built this stadium as a replacement for Fouts Field a long time ago but we didn't; but for what its worth, with this present day NCAA we reside, we absolutely had no where else to go with Fouts Field as our football venue except the way of the dinosaur. GMG!

Uh, National Privacy Act on the picture thing unless she has a photo for public domain? Mark told his entire WBAP radio audience where he was going to be this Saturday, but my bet would be he will want to play "Freshmen Daughter's Dad" and be as incongnito as he can be on Game Day. If the UNT Athletic Dept. folks read this board any more, the above idea by El Paso Eagle of their contacting him because of what he said on the radio as far as his being at our game would be a good idea if they want to give him a bit of special treatment; but my .02 says he will not want to come up to Denton as a celebrity but as a daddy and just blend in with the crowd. BUT HOLD IT JUST ONE GOL' DARN MINUTE HERE: We could get UNT alum Bob Ray Sanders from the local PBS station and the Fort Worth Star Telegram to come up on Game Day, along with Mark Davis, ie, the Liberal vs. the Conservative and they could do the coin toss pre-game, right? (uh....just kiddin'). Bob Ray is a really cool guy and I have run into him a few times in FW at the Mall or elsewhere. He loves to talk about the University of North Texas. GMG!
