Can Leach, leavitt & Mangino Get Back In The Game ?
PlummMeanGreen replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think Leavitt belongs in the trash heap at all no more than I thought Fry did back after SMU fired him. UNT president Jitter Nolen took the bull by the horns ignoring all the locals usual modes of hiring philosophies and all but told the UNT community of that day, "we're going to go outside the box and "I'M" going to hire Coach Fry with our BOR's approval, of course. Sometimes, university presidents have more moxy and gonads towards doing such things than some may give credit. I think our new Prez' Rawlins is cut from the same cloth that Jitter Nolen was and will tweek candidates right along with our AD (and maybe Neinas) till they find "the one" who we need to hire for maybe the most historic and important hire in our school's history--with the new stadium and all. Sorry, but we don't need to move completely all used furniture to our new house across the interstate but that is my opinion which is not the most popular one with about 25 or 30 on this board but............ .........we all have to understand just how small a percentage we on GMG.com represent among our entire UNT academic community, our entire student body (not just the SGA, either, with their sometimes easily sway'able political agendas thru the years) and the rest of our area alumnus body which numbers about 100,000 in Dallas-Fort Worth. Again, this will not be one of those shoot from the hip hurry up(Helwig with DD?) sorta' hires we have become famous for in Denton in times past and local and state sports media who only have to look at our records in all sports of the last 5, 10 or 30 years and how all that translated on a national ranked basis among the other 120 schools in our division. We know how we rank in the Sun Belt and albeit a great home for us now and serving our purpose for the time being, I don't think Dr. Rawlins sees the 'Belt as our forever home so might we want to plan ahead with that in mind? Personally, I am not sure our next HFC's name has yet to even be mentioned on this or any other board for that matter. Uh, just sayin'...... -
Can Leach, leavitt & Mangino Get Back In The Game ?
PlummMeanGreen replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
If UCF would give resume' doctor O'Leary a 2'nd chance for doing that, I think other similar schools might over-look other coaches with far less blemishes. IMO, the key with such a coach with a blemish is the sit down or "come to Jesus" talk that his potential new employers would have where they would make it very plainl that there would be a "zero tolerance" clause in his contract to not repeat any offense again. Most coaches who love their trade would probably stumble all over themselves to make sure they didn't. -
Talk about your name coaches with blemishes who got a 2'nd chance? O'Leary when briefly at Notre Dame got caught with a doctored up resume' as I recall all that. Don't know his career W/L at UCF but they seem happy with their coach--prior blemishes or not. GMG!

Thoughts On Canales' Efforts To Land The Job
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
You know there are 2 sources working with all this happening now (1) Many times, it's GoMeanGreen.com urban tale groupies (as another alum from a big time school told me he calls theirs on his alma mater's message board) repeating things so many times over and over that they become gospel truth and whatever the subject each all but takes on a life of their own or... (2) Whatever leaks out of some real source on campus from legitimate sources. What I have heard not knowing if comes from the above #1 or #2 has said that UNT powers could come up with $600,000 for a new HFC and a million to spread among a new assistant football staff which (if true) might raise the top to bottom quality of that group's quality; although we may very well have 2 or 3 assistants now that might fit into whatever new system we end up with whoever the new HFC turns out to be. -
Hey SGF! Thanks for the PM. You are such a progressive. Albeit I have several TCU friends here in the West O' Plex, I'll still wish the Aztec good luck this Saturday over in Fort Worth. BTW, Amon Carter Stadium beginning next Fall will take on a complete new look as they begin their dramatic re-do of their stadium after Saturday. TCU is planning to move up and stay in the Top 25; seems they sorta' like being in that atmosphere.

Good question... Fry recommended UNT alum Bill Brashier (who was his D.C. at Iowa) when they were leaving Denton for Iowa, but no one wanted to even talk to even one of our own alums about our job. Brashier was very successful with Fry in the Big 10. Yes, another miss opportunity on our part at UNT. And MT, thanks for the nice words on another thread. Jeez, I never though of those song lyrics as cynical, though.

Thoughts On Canales' Efforts To Land The Job
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Actually had lunch today with (by the way) an avid Coach Chico supporter, ie, the famous eulesseagle. This lunch at Fort Worth's Railhead BBQ where we were compleltely surrounded by TCU'ers and Horned Froggers all over the damn place. I think I actually may have got myself a wiff of some 2'nd hand pot smoke or something because I've been very mellow ever since lunch unless... ...ee, you didn't slip a mickey in my beverage of choice did you? He did have me quickly sign some affadavit about supporting some coach but I was too far gone. (Just kiddin'). We did have a great alumnus get-together in Cowtown's west side, talked (extremley civil-like by the way) about Coach Chico and the fine job he's done in 2 games, the old days at North Texas, professors we had in common or knew back in the day, some on-campus shenanigannery (new word there) that shocked me coming from eulesseagle (but nothing like the day SUMG and I tried to set fire to Dennis Parkers enormous wooden Eagle Nest (a big egg for each TD--remember that one) under the student section when no one was looking. (We couldn't get the damn thing to burn quite frankly and probably just as well since campus cops would have seen the smoke, chased us down and then throw us under the jailhouse). Meds? -
Thoughts On Canales' Efforts To Land The Job
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I have no idea who we should hire, but I do know the stakes are very high for those who will hire. Hope we get the right one. On Another Front: Here is one of my favorite folks songs from the 70's when 316 Fry Street was my home for awhile and life much simpler & care-free, and no, there is no hidden message in these lyrics concerning coaches searches, either. Its just one of my favorite songs-that's all. Meanings Will Change ©1971 Yarone Music From the album "Paul and..." by Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary MUSIC NOTE: From the album that produced one of the most played or sung wedding songs to this day, ie, "The Wedding Song" (There Is Love) written by Paul Stookey. He also plays a great 12-string guitar that he calls--Noel. Music is great therapy--yes, yes. Meanings will change as you learn to grow And all that is known becomes suddenly old And that which you had to last you 'til the end Turns out to be just a passing friend And would you spend your life away Collecting great treasures So you'd be safe someday? And when you're old, and when you're gray meanings will change; life's just that way When you're finally sure You think you understand All about living and life's demands Someone will touch you and you'll see again Meanings will change; you just can't win So don't you worry 'bout your money friend Don't you worry 'bout your fame It's all a conspiracy; all part of a game And you're the conspirator; the silent enemy and you're the victim. You finally see After you get to where you have to be After you own everything you see When meanings don't change About the things you knew You might as well die, it's all over for you If you're wise and if you know What few things are real which never grow old Then take them now and make you a start With a simple life and a simple heart. -
Yes and a few of us regulars just got management to change their regular musical menu of the Sons of the Pioneer, Tex Ritter, etc, and start playing Pat Boone, Roy Orbison, Don Henley, Meatloaf, Norah Jones, Sara Hickman, Michael Martin Murphy, etc, etc, etc, They asked me "why all those particular singers" and I told them, "come now now, you didn't know that talented group all attended Weatherford College?" Go UNT College of Music!

So we isolate and demonize now if we don't fall in line with Chico? Isn't that the modus operendi of some of the present crowd in Washington D.C. from the book of Saul Allinsky? Funny how Chairman Mao and Allinsky are the role models of some of that crowd of late now isn't it? Hint: It will be a short-lived M.O. Boring Texas History Lesson For Today For Some of The Canales Family Singers: My great-great grandfather was appointed by Sam Houston to be a Texas Ranger, circa 1833. Many gents in our pre-Republic Texas frontier were part of that most interesting group. A few fellow alums on this board actually know about him because they've told me they've read it in books. But Luther Thomas Martin Plummer was a sum'bich and one hardly made up of sunshine, lollypops and rainbows. His blood flows in my veins so I guess you might say it will take more than isolate and demonize to bother some of us native Texans or new transplanted Texans for that matter. Trust me when I say that communist son of a bitch Saul Allinsky would not have lasted too long in the Texas of the 1830's and truth be known...the Texas of 2010. God Bless Texas!

As Predicted, Dan Hawkins Is Now Available
PlummMeanGreen replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
Now Bill aka Silver Eagle...now don't forget that I, too, haven't forgotten our culture of what most likely won't happen in our lifetimes and the usual directions our culture almost always seems to takes us in other themes. Yet any friend of former Mean Green Bridgade Marching Band Maurice McAdoo is a friend of mine if our differences on this silly forum haven't affected even that which I hope they haven't. Quite frankly, if our alma mater's culture allows it, I am ready for a hire that everyone will be pleased with so I can start writing sonnets and poetry once again. Peace... PS: I still miss Director McAdoo's intro to our school song which I think Winslow took out his first year in 1974. I wish they would restore it. PMG -
Yee-hi I beat silver to this one! (I think) uh........Frayden Hy? GMG! PS: Now pardon me while I have the guilty pleasure here at Starbucks of listening to Norah Jones sing "Lonestar." Oh my, oh my, oh my...

Oh hell, I've now gone and done it! Helped get Canales hired because someone wanted to spite, uh, me? I hate it when people spite me just to get somebody hired they actually were not pulling for to get hired originally? I just hate that. FFR, I'm turning off my computer right now and will be heading to the Parker County courthouse clock tower!

I'm not a basketball guy, but I love Johnny Jones. How can you not with that million dollar smile of his? Yes, I've been critical of our entire BB history, but I am also my own biggest critic, too--we musicians tend to be that way. I did say we need to one day get past the 1'st round and IMHO and FWIW...it will be Johnny Jones more than ANYONE we've ever had coach at North Texas who I belive will git'er done. I turn 60 in a few weeks, I just want things to move a bit more rapidly in Mean Green athletics than they have of late, fellow alums, that's all. Forgive me of my obvious testiness, but this football thing does have me a bit tightly wound as fellow Parker County-ite FFR suggested. FFR, if I ever get stuck on that ledge at our county's courthouse, you do know it will be you and your rescue unit who I will call first, pal! KingDL1, when do we get some more of those great aerial shots of the new stadium? I have one of your classic shots as my screen or background photo on my laptop.

Wack job? And my home of Parker County--Fantasy Land? Are we getting a bit testy here? I found this board is like politics--the Democrats get all tense & testy when they find out most Americans just don't fall in line with their views so they get into name-calling. Juan Williams formerly of NPR? See how they treated one of their own because he upset them for being on what Obama very unwisely and stupidly called--the enemy's cable station ie, Fox? And then you have House Speaker Nancy Pleazzie' who calls those who are not in line with her crowd all Nazis and Racists and on and on and on...so you think "I'M" a wack job? The wack jobs are the ones presently running this country (into the ground) but for just 2 more years. Actually, more than 5 on the insulted part. The last 30 plus years I got to know a bunch of UNT alums in Dallas (where I once lived) and also Fort Worth (where I lived for close to 20 years). Got to meet some great alums, in fact--many on this forum. Hellsbells, I used to plan and execute NT Exes meetings over in Fort Worth over at the Coors Hospitality Room (Meachum Exit, north I35W) when we'd have up to 100 in attendance (including a Chancellor) and back in that era, that would be considered a pretty damn large group for NT Exes. So yes, I do know a few UNT alums and have kept up with many of them to present day. In fact, I'm having lunch with one tomorrow over in Fort Worth who just happens to be an avid Canales supporter. Give out their names? I don't think so....I don't need to lose their confidentiality because of you and your most obvious frustation with how all this will soon play out. Chill out man, we have 2 wars going on in Iraq and Afghanistan that is a real reason to get tense and in today's news we have an American reared Moslem who is calling out all from their nation to kill the infidel, ie, us....as in...... Americans. GMG!

Mark Stoops And What Do We Think?
PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
EagleGreen, you will find that you are truly wasting much of your mental energy trying to get through to some who seem to want to keep Mean Green football just more business as usual; but........"not going to happen--wouldn't be prudent." Prez' George H.W. Bush and David Spade GMG! -
Many, many alums I know who read this board are insulted with all this dog and pony show the Canales Marketing Agents & Family have been doing in the background. Anti-Canales for HFC posters are being asked to give their cell phone numbers out so Coach C can call and attempt to change their minds and we have a few who you can now read who he seems to have been successful with. Give some people a free T-Shirt and their kids a little rubber football and they'll change their minds every time I guess. Many, many UNT alums seem to think the Canales group thinks of North Texas as an "easy to fool pushover of a school and why not" look who we've hired the last 30 years? And by doing all this Barnum and Baily crapola they've gotten the circus crowd all stirred up now. Barnum and Baily? Hayden Fry's Barnum and Baily act got him a Big 10 job. We can only hope that our next coach does so well in Denton that the true perennial Top 25 schools will want to steal him away from us and then a la Boise... ....we can have an Assistant Head Coach ready to take over with all our alumnus base knowing that is what he was being trained to do yet under a name or proven NCAA FBS coach who already has skins on the wall. You have to admit, you don't get fair and balanced on this Canales business in the Denton Record/Chronicle, now do you? OK, Canales Marketing Agents, bring on those red numbers, but can you beat your numbers from my last post? I have an on-going bet with a fellow alum on who gets the most of these so help me out will you?! GMG! PS: I am meeting for lunch in Fort Worth tomorrow with a fellow alum, friend and avid suppoter of Coach Canales. Should be lots of fun and I know the BBQ will be great and the discussion will be............civil.

Mark Stoops And What Do We Think?
PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm so used to the jokes and sarcasm of this board (some of which I dish out, too) so forgive my most wrong interrpretation of your question. I have no idea about Stoops, but he comes from a winning FSU Seminole staff and does have good name ID which I guess gives him some degree of pedigree; just like onne of the Bowdens would have the same. And just how old is Bobby Bowden now? (just kiddin') GMG! -
Mark Stoops And What Do We Think?
PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Too close to retirement age now and I just can't fathom the thought of working for the goverment, either, especially these days and times. I trust that UNT powers will make a good judgement call with this hire because the stakes are higher than ever this time. They really do need to make a good judgement call this time around. GMG! -
Early on in Dodge's career at UNT it seems all we recruited were RB's, DB's and Wide Receivers with an occassional lineman. It was predictable early on that that kind of recruiting would come back to haunt us in due time. Well, we are in our 6'th losing season in a row. So absolutely..........And big linemen with quick feet of which most schools at our present level have to recruit projects to put weight on in the weight room and in the cafeteria but at the HS level when we recruit them they need to at least start with that necessary basic requirement, ie, the quickness of feet factor; maybe even one or two DL's who could chase down a good RB for a few yards out of the backfield before said RB got into 4'th gear. Blast From The Past: Former UNT great and SF 49'er/Oakland Raider All Pro Cedric Hardman when he arrived at North Texas was (believe it or not) 5'10" 185 lbs. His senior year in Denton he was about 6'5" 240 lbs. Now that would be quite the exception in recruiting project lineman but a UNT sports vignette I always thought to be quite interesting.

Mark Stoops And What Do We Think?
PlummMeanGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
First, the Stoops name is magic here in the Southwest and he does come from a winning football program. Fry coached the other 2 Stoops that are HFC's. And you are right, you build with defense, too. UNT Thumbed Nose To Even One of Our Own: Funny thing, though, when Fry left Denton in 1978 UNT alum and football letterman Bill Bashier (Def. Coord.) was the one UNT assistant Fry recommended for UNT to hire to be his successor. Of course, we did not and Brashier went on to success as Fry's Def. Coord. at Iowa. Then UNT hired a coach from Nebraska that we were all told was the Cornhuskers Off. Coord. when (in fact) he was only their Receivers Coach; of course, this was years before the onset of the internet which put people under much more public scrutiny, too. Yet Moore would be at North Texas for 2 years and leave with an even .500 w/l record--our last coach to be that close to .500 career wins matter of fact. I'm sorry, but we really do seem to be our own worst enemy at UNT with the last 6 hires and in 6 hires you'd think even a blind hog would find an acorn every once in a while with a winner But not at UNT--our hogs were too busy talking about how much a sleeping giant we were while some of our alums were busy pumping more Sominex down their throats to keep them in sleep mode while thinking they were actually doing something actually positive as to wake up that comatose, ie, Sleeping Giant. Think about all the other schools at our level who seem to have no problem hiring quality every once with a coach who will even go up to the next level from time to time. La Tech who is a very tough competitor of ours in Texas HS recruiting wars has had much more success than UNT the last 2 or so decades; heck, they've even beat Alabama 2 times during an era we were still trying to find our identity while fiddle-fartin' for 12 years at the NCAA 1-AA level. And the Bulldogs have also had other key OOC wins in the last few years, too. Whoever UNT hires needs to salvage even some of this recruiting class that will sign in February with a few of them needing to make a presence in our 2011 season over at the new stadium. A name coach hire with FBS experience with some winning success would be most ideal. I'm sure our hiring authorities will put their heads together to insure we don't screw up this hire or turn it into another complete public relations blunder among the real masses within our UNT community instead of just a few of us (comparatively) who post on GoMeanGreen.com. We cannot afford such a negative perception creator of a hire that would completely negate the whole idea of a new era with a new stadium and all. At North Texas--the law of averages has to be on our side this hiring go around--and isn't 30 plus years long enough for us to wait on those laws of averages?- 49 replies

OK, for the visually impaired: Gary Patterson came from a winning staff! Good Gosh! I hate it when common sense doesn't seem to rule too well on this board and at North Texas (in general); a board which I have yet to see get its way with who it ever wanted as its next HFC and one that actually thinks one will now come from a football program on its way to its 6'th losing football season. We are giving our competitors much comic relief with such low expecations. Forget the Sun Belt, too, as any semblance of a measuring stick for successs; it's a barometer for losers and those with very low goals if we can believe what almost every sports media outlet writes about our 10 year old league. You poor, poor people who I guess think we've been making up all these stories about the mid-70's in MG Country, specifically our 1975 season. You are to be pittied for what you accept for success because you are the only ones in the NCAA who would accept such. GMG!
