What The New Coach Is Up Against
PlummMeanGreen replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I still defer to the Boise model. Hey, we were once conference mates with BSU, so do they deserve better than us at North Texas (and FWIW, I still think their blue football field sucks)! Hell no, they don't deserve better, but when the Broncos made their "true" national debut versus OU in the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago in arguably the most exciting bowl game I'd seen, what you could see from Boise was their top to bottom team speed--it still defines their team this year and its what helped them beat the Sooners in that most exciting bowl game. -

And what happened at Tennessee that got Fulmer canned in the first place? Prediction: He will not be on our UNT coach's candidates list--no matter how short or long. -

I've been out of pocket today, SGF, but what was the final score on TCU/SDSU? Last I heard the Aztecs had a 14? point lead on the Horned Frogs then I got busy doing other things. -
After DJ'ing a wedding near Commanche Peake, Granbury, and on my way home I listend to the Texas A&M/FIU game on the Aggie network. Albeit they got beat, it was easy to see that FIU would probably be the class of the SBC this year; but boy-howdy didn't Troy and the MUTS take a big fall this season? The sad part of all this is still those early season injuries, but like ol' Dandy Don Meredith used to say on Monday Night Football years ago, "if 'ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas." GMG!

As in "2" dropped TD passes from the MUTS (according to the MGRN Network guys).

Congrats to Coach Canales and the Mean Green. GMG!

If A Wrong Hire Again-Will There Be A Split Down

Quoner, you make me truly laugh! I know we are probably a generation or 2 apart and in different political and religious camps, but the next beer is on me; well, not "on me" but you know what I mean. Seriously, I'd like to meet you, TTG and many others I've never met who I think our differences could create some great civil discussion (like me and eulesseagle "a Chico supporter" when we had lunch earlier this week) and laugh when (at this time in our country's history) we could all use some-----laughter. -

Epistle #633 For SAM Coach--and no one else Depends on what your version of truth is and how you can actually verify what you call the truth, SAM Coach. Remember, "isolate and vilify" can only work so many times (even on this Roman mob'esque board) until it becomes powerless as a tool. Yelling "Fire!" in a theatre can work about one time, too, and even "crying Wolf!" till no one believes there is a wolf has been known to be ineffective, too (except to the wolf). And saying "the truth hurts; doesn't it Jimmy" makes me ask, "what the hell is this guy talking about this time?" Or...... .........are you trying one of those: "I hear you don't beat your wife as hard as you used to" type of thing in an attempt to undo someone and make them appear something they are not? Don't you feel sorry for those murderers who spend years on Death Row only to have DNA say they were innocent the whole time? Truth? You Can't Handle The Truth, SAM Coach! And those who know me best and have for decades know I don't dispense anything concerning NT except that which can sometimes be called the unadulterated blatant truth. Even made some real "un-friends" in the UNT athletic dept. in the past for telling it like it is and that from someone whose been around UNT (much longer than anyone in that dept.) yet when I get the old "isolate and vilify" routine from anyone (which I predict will soon stop at certain quarters on our campus, too); yet an old Bible verse comes back to me: "Neither cast ye your pearls before swine." Matt 6 V.7 I have been called out from the "all about Bottom 25 mediocrity" crowd on this board for having the audacity of hope & change we can all believe in by actually wanting UNT to try to do in Denton what Coach "starts with an F--ends with a Y" did now well over 30 plus years did; but "oh no, lets just keep doing what we've been doing" and you know what? We did for the last 6 or 7 HFC hires. Mark this! We will not this time! BUT...........what we've been doing all these years is now under the high powered microscope of scrutiny. I think "accountability" will soon be a new watch word on campus and very, very soon. This Rawlins guy sounds like many of ours "kind of guy" that doesn't make shoot from the hip decisions, especially those based on emotion. Dr. Rawlins was president at big time programs (well, much larger than ours at least) and that would be Washington State and Memphis (another school who passed us by long ago after our Missouri Valley Conference days with the Tigers) and word is now that UNT powers want to know "WHY" North Texas has not had any ranked varsity teams (at least the ones large numbers of fans pay tickets to see) in over 35 years. Seems now many others think UNT with a new "game changer" of a new football stadium on the way now need to start adding the concept of "ranked teams" to their new vocabulary (and not Bottom 25, either). The truth is.........there is a new era around the corner for UNT and it won't be business as usual any longer in Denton. Some won't like it, neither, because everything they do from now on will be under a much more powerful microscope. Funny thing is that is the kind of work environment of accountability most of us "civilians" have worked under most our lives. -
What song by British rock group Hot Chocolate will be the new fight song for the MUTS? Regis: "Is that your final 'an-sah for a million ?" "You Sexy Thing" GMG!

Are you back again? And which one of the sons are you again so we will all know for future reference? You guys are flattering me with all this attention since I am your typical 6'th generation Texan and (after all) you know we real Texans are known for our humility, right? SAM Coach you seem to have lost your way several posts ago. What do we have to do to get you back on some topic--any topic? I'm having fun with all this because some on this board don't know when I'm actually being serious or tongue in cheek; well, a handful who actually know me do and are getting some real belly laughs out of every bit of these...........bits. -
Thoughts On Canales' Efforts To Land The Job
PlummMeanGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes, Hayden is in his early 80's now. $600,000 (proably less) would get North Texas a proven name (with a blemish) who wants to get his career back on track (just like Fry did post-SMU firing--sorry, I had to use the Fry word again) Coach Fran was supposedly willing to take the Nevada job for $400K if it had been offered. The guys really want back in the business. June Jones already at $2 million? You think all 12,000 SMU fans think they are getting their money's worth on the small stage and small audience he plays before in University Park, Texas? What a waste of good money. Maybe they should give him another million for next year? Bowls During Fry Era At UNT? There weren't 30 something bowls back then but rather about 8 (give/take) and the Missouri Valley had no bowl tie or Fry in his first year probably would had our first bowl team since our Sun Bowl appearance in 1959. Also, Fry may not have left the Mo' Valley had it had a bowl tie. Bowls and 6 Win Minimum? Our win over a Southeast Conference Tennessee team in 1975 was a Vol football team with 6 wins that would have been bowl elgible if only there had been 30 (+/-) something bowls back then. SWC membership? Few really thought the church schools would go for it but ol' Hay' Boy sure got us a lot of statewide publicity with all that SWC business. Darrell Royal was supposed to be one of our sponsors but again, the church schools and Rice? Fry is the only UNT coach I will ever defer to as any semblance of a model to go by because who of the last 6 or 7 coaches would you use as a role model? -
If A Wrong Hire Again-Will There Be A Split Down

Hey! I just sometimes get caught up in the emotion of this board (which can be a very emotional board at times). Sometimes I feel I'm at a Benny Hinn healing service and expect to be slain' and knocked over on my backside when someone refused to catch me, but we Baptist back-sliders turned Methodist don't get into that kind of thing, either. I have to catch myself before I start supporting Canales since we've seen some 180 degree switch overs before our very eyes, but I keep going back to most all of this board's polls which still say most our alums want a new direction and no, it's not mean't as a "hater" campaign toward Chico, either. I still like Leavitt as HFC and Canales Assist. HFC/Off. Coord. I see that as a win-win for all concerned and truth be known very well could be Coach Canales' quickest route to a HFC's job than he realistically has now (IMO). He is still a young man. Now let me get back to reading that New York Times best seller: A Mean Green Book of Etiquette For (Sometimes) Very Mean'nie Posters. Yes, we've all had our rude moments, but sometimes a few posters are merely responding to pot shots when said poster becomes the subject instead of the, uh, subject. Maybe GMG.com needs to come up with a new rule saying: Stick To The Subject Only... Those Attacking Posters of Said Subjects Will Take A 24 Hour Vacation? Of course, that could make for a very dull smack board, too, right? -
Leavitt built USF from scratch while we of UNT watched with amazement as they catapulted from Independent status to CUSA to Big East. Has there ever been such an NCAA flight plan done in so few years? No, there has not. UNT could do a helluva' lot worse than Leavitt and I'm sure he would need a good Assistant HFC if that has not already been pissed away by a handful on this board. Jim Leavitt? You can't find anyone who took a "no culture" football program all the way to the Big East in less than 10 years. What could he do for North Texas with our strategic location, a new stadium and especially with more re-alignment chatter happening now which could open up some things for us? Problem still remains we need to get a new HFC who can salvage some of this Winter's recruiting class and then next Fall get us into some winning ways. Few schools seem to get a pass for getting in a conference w/o a need to have a winning football program and one of those happens to be a good neighbor of ours. GMG!

Check the poll, ElToro6, does it look like only 1 or 2 don't agree with you and your apparent sole choice? Canales has done nothing except hold a few pep rallys in Denton, given away a few T-shirts and mini-footballs and the only school I can think out of 120 in the FBS that would fall for this Professor Harold Hill (the Music Man) new guy in town leading the parade of, well, the one printed in Old English at the top of my Bachelor of Science degree. BTW, what school is at the top of your degree? Empty suit/empty resume' (just sayin). GMG! PS: This "so called" national search hire will be costly to many if its the wrong hire--trust me because the ones who ain't postin' hardly at all on this subject are the ones who are the most pissed. One of them even wants his $25,000 stadium donation back if this most low profile hire happens and that because of all this "trick or treat" charade going on, too, and there will be others just like him if this school mucks up another hire and you know what--we have a history of doing that quite, quite well. -

I think the new President and his Board of Regents will have their say soon and not one of them is a poster on GMG.com if you can only imagine that. Do they even know that this board is going to put Chico's contract together or should we even bother to tell them. "IF" Canales actually got this job, it will have been the easiest HFC's job to get at a school our level (with "3" Sun Belt wins for the hiring criteria for crissakes'?) since an Offensive Coordinator with a multi-school journeyman's resume' (exactly like Chico's looks like) got our UNT job and he, too, without any skins on his wall, either, and that would be.......oh! wait a minute, that was Darrell Dickey! DD got his job from a "one man search committee, ie, our then Athletic Director. Seems Helwig wasn't around too long, either, after that "QB sneak" of a hire as I recall. That hire was one that also split the M G Nation smack down the middle, but the stakes were not as high, that is, we weren't trying to show the UNT academic community that this $78 million stadium was not a wasted investment which showing them the same ol' 6 and 7 of what they have seen the last 4 decades of Mean Green football might make them think such. This is not only our most important hire in history, but the ramifications will have far-reaching affects (I believe)for many on the UNT payroll. They need to get it right and Neinas might help them do it if only they will listen to one who does have a success rate with HFC recommendations. I know UNT's new Prez' and our Board of Regents will be listening since this is also happening under their watch, too. Not your everyday kind of HFC's hire even at North Texas. GMG! -

Although hardly a scientific poll, there seems to be a trend developing here; at least, for the moment. I just hate that this has turned into a personality contest rather than our hiring a new HFC based on some real longterm success. You can look at a photo of Coach C and guess that he's truly a nice guy, but gol' darn it, we have a whole slew of nice guys who have come thru that Athletic Dept. who aren't even in the business anymore. Plus...how many of our last 6 hires got jobs in the Big 12, Big 10, SEC, Big East, etc, etc, etc (hows about none) Yet the whole idea of using a very short SBC season to determine any coach selection (if that is truly whats happening here) kinda' shows we have more problems in Denton than just deciding on a new HFC. In my heart of hearts, I cannot see Chuck Neinas backing any of this looking at hires of his from schools who used his services in the past. What is the magicical mystery part of all this some of us are missing here with Canales? GMG! -
Neinas if he chooses this coach and he turns out not so good might not get as many consultant jobs (maybe)? We are paying him nicely to recommend us someone to move us up, right?
-
FFR, a little long on that post, eh? I never realized this could be contagious. I'll call the Atlanta Disease Control Center today and request they make an immediate visit to this board! GMG!

buff64, long time no see...but I think UNT may need to start being like TCU and purposefully keep ourselves separated from certain Texas schools. Unfortunately, these are times to be a bit smug & snooty in the NCAA whether we like it or not. This trend started a few years ago when TCU lost no sleep whatsoever not wanting to be in bed with their forever bobsy twin, ie, Southern Methodist U. and made no bones about it that they did not want to be in any conference with the Mustangs. I think TCU is reaping the dividends of that attitude today; ;of course, they've done many other things to get where they are, too. UNT doesn't need to add schools to our level to recruit against in other words. We have enough competitors already with La Tech being one we recruit against maybe more than the other 2 Sun Belt schools in Louisisana. Yet........in recruiting, where would most recruits now want to choose to spend their next 4 or 5 years--SMU or TCU? TCU will get a BCS Bowl this Fall while SMU may very well end up in a bowl that they will lose money getting to and certainly won't take too many traveling 'stang fans, either.
