Mwc: What Would North Texas Bring To The Table?
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
It is my hope that our Prez', our AD and Consultant will be at Craig Thompson's (MWC Commish') doorsteps very, very soon if they haven't already. UNT cannot stand idle and think these leagues are going to look at us based on our good feelings about our school. Sleeping giant and "potential" are words we are all tired of, but maybe they would't be so tiresome to others? Coach JJ has Mean Green BB inside the Top 50 according to Rick V at the new conference the other day and for that we can all be extremely happy--just get our BB coach some more recruiting budget and he will get us inside the Top 25 in due time. GMG! -
I think we'd all agree that if any JUCO signee cannot enroll this Spring and participate in Spring Football then we have wasted a 'ship that we can ill afford to waste at this point in time. UNT QB's Riley Dodge: How much more can this storm trooper endure? He may be our starter but we must have a "co-starter" ready to go, too. Derek Thompson: How bad was his injury? He's still virtually untested outside the practice fields. A HS QB Who Graduates This May? Get us a stud, Coach Mac and Chico, and one who can run like the wind and throw equally well. If there is a clone of the Boise State QB that would be a good start. GMG! PS: Anyone else already sense our recruiting is moving up to the next level, too? GMG!!

If any of you had been in Fort Worth the day the Southwest Conference imploded you would have all but seen grown men cry. You would have seen TCU alums who were so pissed after Baylor took "their spot in the Big 12" they had to point their fingers at someone to blame and their Chancellor Tucker and AD Frank Windegger got many fingers pointed at them that day. Reason is TCU at that time was setting on enough of a school endowment they could have built any kind of athletic venue no matter the cost. How much did TCU spend during that era? How about a big fat "ZERO!" In fact, it had been AD Grant Teaff's Baylor U who had been building up their athletic venues (arsenal) slowly and methodically thru the previous years almost knowing what would be on the horizon with the impending death of the SWC; that is, one of the state of Texas traditions that most of us grew up and followed some aspects of SWC sports whether we attended one of its schools or not. What Comes Up--Will Come Down... As we of North Texas know more than anyone (and to quote ol' Blue Eyes) "your riding high in April...shot down in May." Well, I don't think TCU will be able to continue what they are doing at the level they are doing it and if they can--all power to em', but has all the private school's forever model of decades past (Notre Dame) been able to maintain a Top 10 national presence of late? TCU and the Big East will have the usual honeymoon period and this is TCU's 4'th (?) league since the SWC broke apart, but when TCU starts having a few 6 & 5, 7 & 4 and even a 5 & 6 season thrown in there from time to time the Big East travel and its schools will have no more attaction to Texans than many of the schools those of us in CUSA and the Sun Belt have zero in common. (SMU vs. East Carolina, for instance)? UNT is far away enough from Dallas and Fort Worth to become a special, unique program and I think Coach McCarnie sees that, but like any other school it has to win and win often to start cashing in on what will make us that special, unique program. The new stadium is having the exact effect that many of us Old Gun Alums thought it would for UNT and albeit Troy and FIU (as the DRC Sports Editor wrote) will be the 2 schools next Fall to get all the pre-season votes to win the SBC football championship, lets just see what effect all this "New Era" business we have going on in Denton will have on next year's SBC football championship and subsequent trip to the New Orleans Bowl. GMG!

Abilene Christian? (what HS?)

Does Vizza have any elgibility left?

And then there is the matter of budget? It was inferred that more monies would be allowed for assistants but the level of assistants I think Coach Mac goes for will need to be paid more.

Having briefly lived in Honolulu during a Young Gun Alum portion of my life, I don't see any league opting for UHawaii in their league as something special. IMHO, the downside outweighs the upside and thats across the board. Its a great place for tourist to visit with all the history on Oahu, Polynessian Culture Center, Pearl Harbor, the North Island with all those giant waves and, of course, the Yum-Yum Tree (my favorite eatery) but North Texas would still bring a better mainland footprint and would by all means be a better TV ratings generator to the table. TV Ratings? SUMG once sent me a blurb from the Dallas Morning News in an ABC TV game we were involved with the 'News Cathy Harasta being impressed with the data she had of how North Texas had more than won its time slot; in other words, North Texas was ratings winner on that Saturday and the time of day. This could be a regular occurence in either CUSA or my preference, the MWC. If our tribunal of Rawlins, Rick V and, yes, Neinas aren't already on top this MWC situation I would be surprised. GMG

Thanks for the link, laxtonto... One master plan I saw from the UNT official website did indicate at one time UNT would have a 35,000 seat stadium albeit will have to be SRO for that to happen; except, as I look at the stadium I am wondering where we put 5,000 more fans unless they are those special people dressed in green from the Wizard of Oz. I wish Coach Mac could have been at UNT during the whole recruiting cycle but it is what it is... What I think we can expect (if not this cycle) is across the board improvement in all facets of our recruitiing with team speed being toward the top of the list. Coach Mac told D&M on The Ticket this AM how he gets goose bumps when he looks outside his new office and watches that new stadium rising from the ground. Fry did pretty good with his first recruiting haul starting out in December of 1972 and the players he recruited would in their 3'rd year beat the University of Tennessee Volunteers, UH Cougars, etc, etc, etc. I would bet Coach Mac has seen film of much of that season. Exciting times ahead... GMG

Any One Else Think This Is Ridiculous?

I luv' (not that kind of love, thank you) UNT AD Rick V because he is a "pro-active guy who does mostly good but does bust his britches every once in a while, too. (Don't we all sorta' do that)? I don't like a 1 or 2 of his hires and 1 or 2 he has retained on staff, though--that's all I will say on that. But as a public figure he knows he will have to take the bitter with the sweet and he all but said that yesterday as he announced Coach Mac as our new HFC and had to handle the dumb-ass who brought up our present football players "non-uprising" issue which RV handled quite well IMHO. (Couldn't that question been asked after the news conference and away from the new hires and all their guests)? GMG -
And DG, if you had to do such, I'd volunteer SUMG to take a bullet for you! The 2 of you together should be able to protect our new HFC'ing treasure! GMG

Corrected! Thanks, UNTLifer.

Love that UH connection of the last 2 years. He probably would know where Alvin, Danbury, Liverpool, Sweeney, Brazoria, Freeport, Pearland, Angleton, Clute, Lake Jackson, etc, are and not need a Texas map to find them (not that he'd want to go to my home county now unless for some great fried jumbo shrimp). Last 2 Cougar greats from Brazoria County was UH QB Bo Burris and Receiver Elmo Wright from Sweeney, Texas.

Ditto! Iowa State Cyclone fans, how many Dallas-Fort Worth alums do you guys have? Just curious. PMG

Poor Reception At The Reception

Hell, if I'd known we were deficient in the PA aspects of this, I could have let them borrowed my Yamaha power speakers with a wirless Shure mic of which those sitting in Stark Hall at Texas Women's University could have heard Coach Mac speak. Looking at Coach Mac's photos and directly into his countenance, I don't think I'd want to piss off that man more than once. Like another said, it could have been the "spirits" making some people talk loud. Ever notice how intoxicated people seem to temporarily lose their hearing and therefor speak louder than usual? GMG -
Will Coach Maccarney Retain Deloach?
PlummMeanGreen replied to UNTMike81's topic in Mean Green Football
Per his news conference announcement meeting, Coach Mac will interview all our assistant out of respect and then do like most other coaches do and hire his people. We don't have Jerry Jones running this operation in other words. Coach Mac will also want to hire proven recruiters, too, who will help us jump to the next level or 2 and he probably already knows just who they are going to be. GMG -

Do I sound like I'm joking? (in the best George Clooney voice I can muster) Which part of the facts or truth about UNT vs SMU are you just not willing to accept o ye of apparent long, long ago Christmas' traditions past? It's time some of our people just quit genuflecting toward anything that concerns the red, the blue or (in general) of a horse apples sorta' nature, if you get my drift. Peruna reminds me of my favorite kids toy, ie, the vaunted ol' stick horse, Pal. Ever seen Emmitt01's posts on their board the last few years? Well, thats how we all should feel about em' over there. They will never break bread with us because they're blue bloods of the lowest order so I say lets just make them our athletic "bi-atches" within the next 3 to 5 years--if not sooner. Lets turn em' into real bonafide, sanctified GREENBLOODS! Rivalry? They wouldn't know one if it came up and bit them in their arses. (They are still hoping UT and TAMU will accept them back again as "rivals" sometimes in the next 2 or 3 centuries). Oh, I get it, you're probably one of those old Southwest Conference hound dogs long on the tooth, right? Have A Nice Day -

http://www.newstimes.com/default/article/UW-officials-see-benefits-in-TCU-s-departure-843316.php Do MWC officials know we have more alums in the DFW metroplex than either University of Texas (Austin) or Texas A & M University? Doesn't that translate to more televisions in NT Exes homes which can translate into ratings? Isn't it ratings is what the TV networks want rather than what a school did 75 years ago? What kind of coffee would that and a buck buy you in today's NCAA? Will the MWC stay at 9 members or expand their footprint to 12 schools (and a larger TV coverage footprint) as to protect itself from any other defections while expanding their conference with the 5'th largest TV market, ie, the North Texas Metroplex and..............the one school that can deliver the best TV ratings because of UNT's "lights out," humongous (and still growing) constituency? On behalf of Prez' Rawlins and AD Villarreal, should UNT turn Chuck Neinas loose on this re-alignment project, too, with him camping on the office doorsteps of MWC Commish' Craig Thompson? GMG! UNT versus SMU (1) North Texas just brings far more to the table with a larger fan base, (2) UNT with an enrollment that all but quadruples SMU's (3) Approx. twice as many UNT students now living on/near campus than SMU and TCU's combined enrollments. (4) With close to 100,000 NT Exes in the DFW Metroplex, we dwarf SMU's alumnus numbers (5) Our football stadium and basketball facility combo vs. SMU's ? Let MWC officials visit both schools and decide for themselves--Anyone want to place some bets on who they'd pick as the school with the better facilities? (6) Easy major airport access from either DFW Airport (25 minutes from Denton) or even Alliance Airport (15 minutes from Denton City Limits sign) ! (7) Big Mac "D" Attack On The Way At The New Mean Green Stadium with Chico the Man Wide Open Offense, Too! GMG ! ! -

And that land west of the AC already has the shape of a baseball field. How interesting that is. Would also be interesting to see how a campus master plan projects where the future parking in and around our new stadium will be as well as (hopeful) outlet roads will be placed as to create a less congested traffic jam. Still wonder if stimulus monies would help us finance our "bridge-to-somewhere" ie, from Fouts concession area right across to the Mean Green Village. Until such an over-the-interstate bridge can be built, UNT may need to talk to the 6 Flags Over Texas people about how UNT can emulate them and come up with our own shuttle trains that 6 Flags used to picked up thousands of their customers in far away parking lots for decades. GMG! -
Hello PM pal and welcome back to the board. Now we need Chuck "known by everyone in the NCAA universe" Neinas to help our UNT leaders pitch North Texas for the MWC so we can play those Aztecs every year!
