  1. Thanks, Rick! Been giving you guys a vacation from my posts the last few days with the holidays and all. But a belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the Mean Green Nation--we of the 'nation all know we don't always agree, but we all still bleed green and thats for darn sure. GMG!
  2. Emmitt, please pardon my insensitivity with the comparison and never really truly intended to go there with any semblance of using as part of the comparison the total abomination that slavery was in the history of our country. I fully understand your point, though, and (henceforth) I will surely look for a much better illustration than the poor choice of the one I used. Hope the holidays have been good ones for you and your family. GMG!
  3. UNT has never beaten any school with an NCAA National Championship legacy as LSU has in the modern era. Of course, OSU (Okla. A & M) has 1 or 2 during their Iba Era of long ago but I'm talking the modern NCAA "Big Dance" era when all this became a nationally followed sport which began (if you believe Dick Enburg's theory on this) post UCLA/Houston shootout in the Astrodome in the late 60's. Up until then, it was mostly a regionally followed sport. In Texas during that pre-modern era, basketball was what you did between Fall and Spring football. GMG
  4. UH will be tough because of their team speed. Our advantage in the UH game is the obvious. I wish UNT could alternate playing Rice and UH in Denton every other year. We need to play games in H-Town as much as we can. GMG!
  5. I'm sure Bobby Knight made more at Indiana than their FB coach but, yes, we're talking BK here, too. One of our great FW area alums tried calling me the other night to announce the Big Win but I was already in snooze land. I'm not sure that this may have been our greatest win in MG basketball history except for the fact that I wasn't around during most of the Mo' Valley days and I don't know if we beat any of those great teams that had the likes of Oscar Robertson, Wes Unseld, Maurice Cheeks, etc, etc, etc, I remember as a UNT student when Denny Crum's UL Cards used to come to the SuperPit but we for sure didn't win any against the Cardinals. IMHO, Coach JJ should have gotten his contract changed the next day post-LSU win to make $300K+ (retro-active). That win won't hurt his recuiting for darn sure; of course, the down side is LSU may be looking at JJ as a future new head coach, too. To quote Rosannadana from the old SNL show: "It's always something!" GMG!
  6. No one even questions why we cannot get better name or marquee teams at home and in our new stadium beyond 2011? We have too many on this board who are like the King's subjects in the short story "The Emperor's Clothes" and I don't understand that at all. I know green kool-ade abounds here but don't let it drown you into a submission of accepting everything our Mean Green plantation owners are dishing out to us (and hoping we dare not ask questions). That is a very disappointing group of years with hardly any name schools coming to Denton. Hell, we could have had those OOC schedules at Fouts Field; in fact, looks like the kind of schedules we've had at Fouts forever. Most I've spoken to wanted the new stadium to make a difference in who we had coming to Denton, too--not merely a surge of retro scheduling or just the same ol' kind of scheduliing we've had. Not good--not good at all, especially with our $78 million investment. We need to start showing why we spent that $78 million and putting few if any name schools on future home schedules is hardly a good start. Who approved all that anyway?
  7. Oh heck, guys, I was just kidding with that post just to up my red numbers. It appears I succeeded, too, because we know none of absolutely anything I said in that post was true, now don't we? GMG! PS: May your next 25 years of non-stop dumba$$ hires and bad management with those hires be nothing like most of our last 25 years and if they are...you will then know where some of us are coming from. We also have past media guides of those last 25 years for proof as well and FWIW...... I used up all my red numbers a long time ago. Some of you will to in time. GMG ! !
  8. Jeez, "shirley" the crowd who didn't get their way in the HFC's search won't hold a grudge until Judgment Day? If I post 'motherhood, apple pie, Chevy I still get a red number from coward corner? Pardon my humility here, but I really do hate it when I'm right (just as some of you) most of the time when it concerns North Texas athletics. I guess being around all this for about 40 years gives any one with any degree of cognitive abilities (common sense?) a pretty good lay of the land and of the situation at hand? It's an easy read at North Texas but our leaders stumbled all over the simplicity of what was going on personnel-wise and quite frankly....they still are. I could say why we've been where we've been most of the last 30 plus years but I'd have to list an entire freakin' army of names non-stop who've come and gone thru that Athletic Dept. almost like it was a department store at Christmas time to state that reason. What UNT powers could never quite figure out is that.........you become who you hire. Seems they really never knew who to hire and certainly never knew who to fire and when. NOTE: The amazing part to me is how the last 15 years a small handful in the Athletic Dept. had the audacity to go around acting like they were leaders of a surgiing Boise-like program when ours was the complete opposite in fact. And then.......as they persevered non-stop Mean Green mediocrity, could not get jobs elsewhere (except maybe Nowhere State) and worse the taxpayers get to fund their state of Texas retirements to boot? I hope Dr. Rawlins will soon have his say on every bit of this because Coach McCarney is not going to be able to do this by himself. It will take a Mean Green village (and we have too many left-overs who don't deserve to be left-overs with Texas tax-payers funding their poor multi-year records of only one varsity team in the Top 50 since we met the attendance criteria back in 1994. I am not alone with these feelings, either. Go for it ye who hide behind the red number and also don't bruise you keyboard fingers or get any of them caught in your skirt.
  9. Might look darn good in person but the TV cameras and lime green turf might not agree with each other. That red football field of ???????? drove me crazy as to turn remote control to another station. When you build a new stadium and lay down turf you may want to consider how the ESPN TV camera lenses will view that stadium? GMG!
  10. We of UNT may want to try to walk a mile in TSU's shoes on their understandable desires to "move up the NCAA totem pole" theme. Oh! Wait a minute! Seems we have been in those shoes since we've been doing the same thing (and still are) since I was a student at UNT beginning Spring Semester of 1972 and later in 1975 when AD Hayden Fry made public overtures heard 'round the Lone Star State for North Texas' eventual & hopeful admission to the Southwest Conference. And idea that went over like a lead balloon with 4 of the SWC's private schools. GMG!
  11. A Top 25 finish of our SBC football champion would change many minds around here--including my own. The SBC will not be taken seriously from the football standpoint until that happens. Not sure the 'Belt has the same consortium of voters who would push our Top 25 quest as the Mid-American Conference (MAC) seems to have for theirs with their own region's sportwriters who seems to be in their corner when they have a truly representative team. GMG!
  12. Brett, your one of our best. Prayers for your very, very speedy recovery. PMG
  13. Troy Aikman once transferred from OU to UCLA because he did not fit in the Sooner offense. Seems that move turned out quite well for all concerned--even for that other team just down the road from Denton. Welcome to Mean Green Country, Brent! Can't Wait To Watch You Zing Those Passes! GMG!
  14. Could have been 1 of a 100 or so of us starting way back with Sunday "Letters to the Editors" of the (RIP) Dallas Times-Herald, Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. It could hardly be called a new subject, but I think with the new stadium it will slow down considerably with the SMU part of this and that just another phenomena of what this new stadium is doing for us all. Still wish it coulda' been built 25 years ago so we'd be talking about how we need to not be in CUSA or the MWC but rather the Big 12. GMG!!
  15. Said it to a couple of you right after Coach Mac was hired but as many JUCO's he can get his first recruiting season the better; that is if they can get enrolled in our Spring semester and be here for Spring Football. Then next year he and staff can start their "mostly" HS recruiting modus operendi. We still need a JUCO QB IMO...Riley Dodge would be the starter, but he does need a collegiate proven back-up, too. co GMG!
  16. If we keep "North Texas" on the helmet maybe a font which can be more easily readable from a distance than the one we have now? Also if we don't use "North Texas" on the helmet, like GrayEagle posted how about SOW (only) on the helmet and lets just leave it there for the next 50 years, eh? (The next 50 years was my part of this) GMG!
  17. Good one, Emmitt!
  18. A few on this forum may have to understand that it depends on what era you attended UNT which may dictate their view of the Sun Belt Conference. Those from the Mean Joe Greene era who had one team which all but beat (in fact, did beat if not for a crooked SWC referee) national champion contender Arkansas may not look at the 'Belt as so good a neighborhood. Those from the Hayden Fry era may feel about the same as those from the Mean Joe Greene era at UNT. Those from the Corky Nelson era saw one of his 1-AA teams beat 2 (or was it 3) SWC team in one season and in that same season almost beat the Texas Longhorns so they may have a different take on the SBC, too. Fact is...it (the SBC) is what it is and it has served our purpose for the time being. We have no idea how politics may rule the day in this next conference re-alignment and shuffle so we of UNT have to be prepared for just about anything, but this time around we can do all that in the luxury of the best strategically located college football stadium in the Lone Star State that is not shoe-boxed in by its campus, its campus building and with the luxury of much green real estate on that approx. 1,000 acres (our former golf course) that will still give us room to grow. It's All Good...It's All Green! GMG!
  19. Then I think I heard back in the day that that Fouts Field turf would not be able to be peeled up and moved. I hope that was wrong since it is still in good shape. And does UNT really plan on keeping Fouts as a Track & Field Stadium? If so, that doesn't show on the campus master plan which shows "no Fouts Field" albeit master plans can be changed.
  20. Troy figured out what Boise had years ago on this overall team speed thing. It's a "no brainer" until you find yourself with a decent and talented football team that is still 1 step too slow and then thats when you find out you can no longer dominate a league even like the Sun Belt Conference any longer. Thats what happened in DD's last few years of not recruiting well while he waited on a bigger and better job because of 4 bowl games few outside the Mean Green Nation saw as that big a deal. The bowls were great for the national publicity it gave our school and for that we will always be grateful for DD's efforts those 4 seasons, but the ones we really needed to impress (the national, regional and local sports/poll voting media) seemed to all be duly unimpressed. That was no ones fault at North Texas, either. It was just the new conference "no respect" thing that would have happened with almost any new league in any part of the USA. I do think the SBC with a couple of Troy's teams could have beaten a couple of Top 25 ranked MAC teams, though, but I also think Troy being a member of the 'Belt kept that from happening, too. My bet is that Coach McCarney and Staff turn much of this media-thinking around but it will still take some time. GMG!
  21. Thanks for the "Delete" button Harry! I just used it on the Recruiting Section! GMG!
  22. Sportwriters who have voted past MAC teams into the Top 25 polls in season's past are much more kind to that league than sportswriters who with one giant swath of their pen, their opinion and their votes seem to still have not recognized our "much better" Sun Belt Teams from year's past which says the media is yet another huge obstacle Wright Waters and Gang have yet to break that voting media's code of acceptance. Not hatin'--just sayin'... GMG!
  23. Coach Mac said he wanted athletes who could run and I think 4.4 for a 230 pounder is a great start! As some of you know, Mean Green & former NFL All Pro great Cedric Hardman was 5'10" 185 pound when he arrived in Denton and when he got drafted #1(?) he was around 6'5" 240....don't know if Akunne will grow as dramatically as Hardman did but even if he doesn't he still has that terrific speed which will compensate for any other perceived short-comings. Again......Boise State beat OU in that BCS bowl because most all of their 22 starters could run like the wind mixed in with some great skill people who could run, too. I honestly think what Boise has done the last 10 plus years is now within our grasp because of that new football palace being built between those 2 interstates plus.......what is shaping up to be some real goat ropin' son-of-a-gun recruiters on Coach McCarney's staff. I believe it will continue to amaze us all how this new stadium will legitimize and authenticicate all that we've said we wanted to do in Denton for decades as far as a major college football program goes. Some of these new recruits giving our coaches verbals obviously want to be in on the ground floor of all this excitement, too, and why not--it is going to be exciting to watch this thing build and catapult to the top. Like KTCK 1310 The Ticket's Norm Hitzghes said about UNT: "Why not North Texas being another Boise?" (Anyone else think ol' Norm has taken a peak of that new stadium rising from the rolling Texas prairie)? Great times ahead, folks. GMG!
  24. ee, that fine familia of tres are obviously headed to the Wing Section of our new stadium for la familia plan pre-game fiesta of caliente dogs and coca cola? GMG!
