And hopefully we will not schedule the same kind of OOC schools at our new stadium as we did at Fouts. I think that would create a groundswell of attitudes such as: "Why did we spend $80,000,000 if we bring to Denton the same type of schools we did at Fouts Field?" Moral of post: Wouldn't it be nice to see us have such huge wins at home for a change? -
Recruiting is like Christmas except you have to wait 2 or 3 years before you really know what you got for Christmas this year. GMG!

When you recruit for position and get the right kid with a frame you can grow up in the weight room and/or cafeteria if need be and this kid has the right speed for said position.......I think in many cases it doesn't matter how many stars those kids had in high school--the fact that our recruits will fit in at our school, our system, our offense and, our defense makes that kid just as valuable at our school as a 3, 4 or 5 star kid at another school. We should not forget that those players you describe earned those stars against high school competition, too, yet sort of a funny thing that all these 2, 3, 4 or 5 star recruits start out their college careers with "zero" stars once 2-a-days start this August. Darrell Royal Told Hayden Fry post-1976 UT/NT Game Won By UT 17 to 14: "But Hayden, our recruiting classes the last 4 years had 100 times the blue chippers than North Texas--so how did "YALL" almost beat us tonight?" Of course, those words were never uttered by DKR but look at UT recruiting (back then) with their perennial great classes. Can anyone explain why North Texas in the early 70's after a few disastrous years with Rod Rust and his catastrophic ender season of "0" wins in 1972 plus....Fouts Field (with track and all) as our less than exciting football stadium could be competitive with UT a few years later with (basically) unknown recruits? IMO, I think it was a matter that North Texas had recruits that fit our system quite well may be one answer to that question. The Ghosts of Recruiting Seasons Past: Forever at UNT we have heard this from media recruiting gurus during past recruiting years: "Those kids will be the kind that North Texas can sign" (as if they all came from leper colonies or something) yet........with those same "North Texas kind of kids" one particular group (among others from different eras at North Texas) only went down to Austin and played the Texas Longhorns (with Earl Campbell) off their heels in our first ever game with UT. North Texas is not the only school that has done this with recruiting classes unknown to the media and I think you can start with the Boise State Broncos who beat OU in that superb bowl game a few years ago with more sucesses since and.... with no highly ranked recruiting classes to boot. Also look at TCU, Utah and a whole host of others who've done the same with unheralded recruiting classes. Long story short: I feel most of us would rather our recruits be 4 or 5 star pedigree talent by their senior year over at the Mean Green Village compared to the stars they earned at a high school level. Just sayin'... Congrats to HFC McCarney and staff on a great first class! It is very much a sign of things to come. GMG!

Good find, 97and03... And within the North Texan article provided by 97and03 was this separate article in the below link on UNT's presence with the North Texas Super Bowl (as their logo calls it). http://northtexan.unt.edu/content/unt-symphony-orchestra-kick-super-bowl -
"weather" We Like It Or Not: It's Icy & Dangerous!
PlummMeanGreen replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
High today about 17 degrees? That obviously means little thawing out and much black ice on the bridges that you cannot see at night. I'm surprised they have not postponed the Recruiting party because you ever been out in this kind of weather in the dark when someone rattles your bumper in a fender-bender (or worse) and then you need AAA Auto Service to come to the rescue while you are subject to frost bite? That happened to a Fort Worth friend last night, but he had a warm place to go. UNT officials should move both the game and the Recruiting party to Saturday in consideration of those who would get out on the interstates in this terrible weather; that is, if they just want to keep it local and small turnout. I'd hate to hear of any bad wrecks among our elect due to this still being on the schedule. (It will mostly be the bridges that will be the problem tonight). GMG! -

This board is not about a popularity contest. I have all the friends and confidants I need or want. I think its more a matter of maturity (or lack thereof) or accepting what some know is the truth in many cases and just cannot handle it as presented and as far as UNT is concerned...I've gotten all the awards & recognition from my alma mater that I want and I didn't ask or campaign for that one. While we still have the freedom of the internet, I'm sure I will still express my views whether anyone who would hide behind a red number likes them or not. GMG! -
I've got a 4 wheel drive vehicle and do OK, but here in Parker County the intersections are iced over and people are skidding like crazy hitting each other or stop signs. To all our Mean Greeners, Visitors of GMG.com and even hater/posters: Stay home if you can and if you can't don't drive like we native Texans seem to think we can drive and that is like we do when we get inside those "bumper cars" at the State Fair of Texas or local county fairs. Dogs or Cats? Get em' a place out of the wind, an old blanket inside the garage and give them fresh water from your kitchen because all ponds or outside water outlets are frozen. It will be 8 degrees early tomorrow morning and that is cold, folks! Just, uh, sayin'... GMG! PS A red number for this thread? See what I mean, Harry? No rhyme or reason or anything close to how I think you originally intended it to be used in the first place. I like the idea I heard expressed recently of those who post red to have their ID or monikors shown so all on GMG.com can see those who would hide behind such otherwise. Then they can explain to all on the board the reason they posted red if they posted red any longer.

First of all I'm pissed that you got 10 red numbers on your post; I've got many but never 10 on a single post but anyhow...this for you, HoopManx: Did You Enjoy ESPN's 30/30 non-stop run of the SMU DP and all it's cast of characters last month? Other than that, hope yall have a nice remaining of your BB season. GMG! PS: I was a student and sat among the largest basketball crowd in UNT history (10,700 SRO) and you'd never guess, HoopManX, who the opponent was that night? You guys spend way too much time being holier than thou and worrying about your social climber standing & status when their is an innocent, collegiate rivalry waiting to happen and both schools only 35 miles apart. Hellsbells man, its just college kids playing games for heaven's sake and not alums out on the court checking out their opposing fan's clothing labels to see whose alums shops the fancier clothiers.

We're Eating At The Big Boy Table Now
PlummMeanGreen replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Earlier last football season during a televised TCU game the broadcaster said "TCU doesn't get many 4 or 5 star recruits but they are that before they leave TCU." This is probably where North Texas should hope to get to and I think we will now. As we all know, talent evalutation is strategic especially at FBS schools, but since our coaches cannot coach speed it is imperative that who we do recruit can run like a deer (and I think Coach McCarney said early on that speed and quickness would be a top criteria in our recruiting; of course, I'm sure all FBS coaches would express that too). GMG -
I guess I'll be 90 years old when a directional designation on any school will not be considered another supposed obstacle. Boise has one of those city names with hardly a long history at the upper level of NCAA success. I will forever hope UNT will emulate Boise and use them for our model, but what do we as North Texas Exes know many of whom have tried to offer up or suggest ideas that just might have caused the UNT Athletic Dept. revolving doors to dramatically slow down in decades past? I think all would admit that attrition has been one of our problems (and at times for darn sure has way too many times been an ally, too). The SBC is fine for North Texas and once we start getting ranked teams maybe it will finally lose its national reputation among the media, but we (like everyone else) also need to prepare for other options if they were to materialize. The stadium (as many NT alums forecasted long ago) will give us the right vehicle to now make a run at some of these conference possibilities. GMG!
-
Thanks for the concern... but...what is the WAC going to cost La Tech the next few years? Just askin... We have one of the premier sports consultants in the NCAA (Chuck Neinas) giving North Texas some pretty wise words on our future. Of course, he is being well compensated but I think in due time UNT will appreciate the association we've had with this man. Also, our new UNT Prez' Rawlins had the same role at a PAC 12 school as well as one in CUSA (Memphis) and between both Rawlins and Neinas most of us just feel they are making all the right decisions for us now. Yes, it's been a roller coaster ride for us in the past (mostly our own doing and procrastinating of building a new football stadium), but we did not have the kind of pedigree these 2 men I just mentioned had to lead our university in key/strategic directions for our school.

Played Ball With Tony Mitchell Last Night
PlummMeanGreen replied to sparkmank's topic in Mean Green Basketball
University of Houston icon & former BB coach Guy Lewis for several years had a so-so basketball program (not great--not bad) down in H-town until he recruited a kid from Rayville,(sp?) Louisiana named Elvin Hayes and WA-LA! suddenly the Houston Coogs' basketball program took off from there. Funny how great BB players make good coaches, uh, great coaches, right? I hope Tony Mitchell will be UNT Coach JJ's "Elvin Hayes" and help him really get his BB program synergized up to the next level. From a distance and football as my passion, I know most you BB guys are down now especially after the Denver loss, but Tony Mitchell (apparently) is the type of guy that can revolutionize Mean Green basketball to soaring heights never-ever seen before in Denton. Just sayin... -

TDodge is now getting his pay checks from Pitt so I guess its OK if he did have influence? As some of us predicted, TDodge would get a college coaching gig again and even moreso some of us felt when that happened he would most likely recruit the North Texas region, too. Here's A Good One: One of our great alums who had worked in the athletic dept. when Jerry Moore got the TTech job remembers UNT assistant FB coaches who Moore told would go to Lubbock with him making recruiting calls from the UNT Athletic Dept. on behalf of Texas Tech and on our nickel. GMG!

If the Sun Belt Conference powers can find out which sportswriters have no problem putting MAC schools in annual Top 25 polls then invite them to SBC HQ's in New Orleans do a bit of wine & dine and then SBC powers making the mere "suggestion" to the MAC-oriented Top 25 scribes, "when we beat your MAC teams, give our team)(s) some Top 25 voting consideration." I know (in the aforementioned paragraph) a bit of a pipe dream and most unrealistic scenario for such a meeting as that to ever materialize, but the SBC in my opinion has had equal or maybe even better teams than some of the MAC's Top 25 entries in the last decade. Troy was one of those teams who beat #19 Missouri to debut their new stadium albeit the Tigers went on to a rather rough season that year but were still #19 the night the Trojans slipped a green weinie on the Big 12 school. The new whatever the WAC becomes would be another step backwards for what the Texas Higher Ed Coord. Board in Austin still says will be the 2'nd largest university in Texas and that being the University of North Texas. At some point, we need to align our athletic expectations with our expected position as the #2 largest university in the Lone Star State behind UT-Austin and the WAC to me would not fit the bill for that.

Emmitt, I remember when you used to be a genteel, laid back, happy-go-luck type of guy who did not microscope everything that anyone posted. Now you've become the Ralph Nader of GoMeanGreen.com threads and posts? Actually, I don't think an explanation is in order on this but I will try anyway: The link from the first post of this thread came from the official Super Bowl website and was not pre-fabricated by anyone associated with North Texas or Denton or Denton County. The City of Denton was part (albeit I would think a limited part) of the massive planning of this enourmous North Texas Super Bowl of which the town of our alma mater's location according to media releases is going to benefit from economically and is one reason they, ie, the official NT Super Bowl website officials gave Denton a nice (single page) web page and recognition for their part in all this that will happen this next Sunday. Even our UNT Symphony Orchestra played a big part in one of the first North Texas Super Bowl events a few weeks ago. I still wub' ya' Emmitt (in a Christian-like sort of way, of course), but I just don't understand the nit-picking that happens on this board (from others, too, not just you) from what seem like pretty basic topics thats not mean't to be controversial at all. Let's all have fun with GoMeanGreen.com no matter how innocent or maybe sometimes controversial the subject might be. Being UNT alums and Mean Green fans for years and for some decades, we deserve a little fun more than those from most other schools that seem to have had a decade in and decade out smooth road to travel. So...can't we just all agree to disagree w/o severing the jugular? GMG! -

Also, remember the exclusive "front page" photo in the old Dallas Times-Herald with UNT Coach Hayden Fry and our Mean Green team at Love Field and the huge crowd that greeted them back to Texas? Let's get back to those days, Coach D-MAC, because most of us think you, Coach Chico and the rest can do just that! -

JH, my hands are still in my back pockets rubbing my itchy, uh, We've seen it all pal, lets hope we see more of the upside kind of stuff before all us Baby Boomers & older go to Mean Green heaven! I thought the "North Texas Super Bowl" link was great for UNT and Denton and shows we are hardly one of those backwater outpost college towns that just added indoor plumbing to our haciendas. MWC Commish' Thompson needs to come see all this first-hand, though, that's all. GMG! -
http://www.northtexassuperbowl.com/denton The link somewhat says it all. Denton, Texas, USA, is one of the North Texas Super Bowl host cities. Wonder if we can get MWC Commish's Thompson to come spend a couple days with our UNT leaders sometimes this week? HINT! HINT! HINT!
